Inca Dove Miller In city limit east of Texarkana near I-30 12-28-2000 3-6 Jerry Turney December 28, 2000 thru July 17, 2001. In February 3 birds were under my feeders. One of them seemed smaller and I assumed it to be female since one of the remainig birds seemed to try to drive the other one away by making short hopping flights toward it. I have observed this behavior on two other occasions. The birds are regular if not daily visitors to my back yard. I saw two birds just this morning.

Dove sp. Boone Harrison 5-7-1996 1 Paul and Wanda Franklin Ringed Turtle Dove? Eurasian Collared Dove? Afternoon after a front, low pressure, misty, cloudy. Paul and Wanda Franklin, residents of Harrison, reported to JoAnne Rife..(actually Mrs. Franklin called the Arkansas Game and Fish Comission and reported to someone named "Wanda"...I fond out about this bird at the beauty shop.) J.A.R. The Franklins used the Robbins guide to identify this bird as a Ringed Turtle Dove. Since we had had a previous record in Harrison (about 1 mile south of this location) of a Eurasian Collared Dove, the exact species remains unknown but it seems worthy of reporting. Appeared under similar circumstances - spring storm - etc -

Black-billed Cuckoo Logan Mt. Magazine 6-10-2001 1 Joyce Shedell 1 adult. When we first heard the bird call, we all "froze" at the sound, because we realized that it was not a yellow-billed cuckoo. We then knew it was a black-billed cuckoo. We went nearer and played the Stokes version of bird calls of the black-billed cuckoo. It came out to investigate and became very agitated. It was darker overall than a yellow-billed. One observer noted the red orbital eye ring. Note: We made another trip to Mt. Magazine today (June 16, 2001). We went back to the same area that we observed the black-billed. We did not hear any calls. So we played the Stokes version of the black-billed, hoping to call it out. But it never responded. Geographic, and birding by ear tapes, to confirm my initial impression. This bird was flying from corner to corner, as if it was defending a territory.

Black-billed Cuckoo Washington Lake Elmdale 8-22-1992 1 Mike Mlodinow 1 (1st fall) The species is a rare migrant, especially in autumn, in the Northwest. The presence of a juvenile at this early date suggests the possibility of local nesting. The tail did not seem emarginate. Perhaps this was due to lack of contrast on the undertail: it looked uniformly brownish with a very small pale tip to the central tail feathers. Dorsally, the tail was almost entirely brown with very small white edgings on some rectrices. The primaries were more rusty than the rest of the wing. The bill was mainly black on the upper mandible and black on the distal half of the lower. The base of the upper and the proximal half of the lower mandible were grayish, contrasting sharply with the blackish parts. The eyering was yellow. Otherwise, it was brownish above and whitish below.

This location is at a rocky, and lightly wooded, area just where the base of the mountain joins the Crooked Creek Valley on the upper level...(not all the way down into the immediate creek level). I believe Mary said she saw these near their chickens; roadrunners eat at feeders. This is the first time I've had anyone tell me about Roadrunner babies..likely I never tried to find out. Short-eared Owl Prairie Stuttgart Airport 2-17-2001 7 Drew & Sherry Phillips, Andy Dapkins, Bill Holimon, Ken Dayer and Mary Ellen Stockdale sight record. We located the seven Short-eared Owls on the north end of the main runway. The grass in the field they were in was no more than 12 inches high and the area was no more than 1 1/2 to 2 acres. We were surprised to see them in such short grass. A great deal of the farm land was flooded in the surrounding area. Could this have caused the heavy congregation of owls in less than ideal habitat?

Short-eared Owl Washington Fayetteville, Razorback Golf Course 2-18-2001 1 Mike Mlodinow sight record. This bird was flushed from a grassy field just west of the golf course. As I had previously flushed several harriers from this field that day, my first impression was that this bird was also a harrier. However it lacked the contrasting white rump ofa harrier. As it flew away I noticed that its head seemed somewhat large for a harrier and it had a contrasting light brown patch on its upper primaries, visible as it circled, just before it landed in the grass. This species is very rare in northwest AR. It was last reported in this part of AR in 1987.

The white marks on the primaries, the "crooked", pointed wings and generally dark coloration separate it from most other birds. However other nighthawk species (though these have never been recorded in AR) were not eliminated.

Selasphorus sp. (Hummingbird) Boone Harrison, Skyline Terrace subdivision 9-4-2000 1 JoAnne Rife, Wanda Franklin, Paul Franklin, Martha Milburn, Sally Jo Gibson September 4, 5, 2000, continuing. To my knowlege this is the first record for Boone County, although likely not the first occurrence!! The body of this bird is noticeably more "chubby" than the RT's. Back is not completely rufous but has at least half rufous, paler wash on the lower sides as in the left-hand picture in National Geographic. [I] strongly feel it is Rufous Hummingbird based on probability and on amount of rufous color on top of head and lower back. Male, likely immature but fairly well colored, gorget not complete but relatively solid. Saw in good light with deep burnt orange color. Plumage transitional. I read Kenn Kaufman's Advanced Birding on Selasphorus. Martha concurs strongly with my thoughts. We understand the dangers of identifying between Rufous and Allen's. [This bird was at] home of Paul and Wanda Franklin, approximately 100 yards from eastern edge of existing Baker Prairie. Backyard has many hummingbird-attracting flowers, a feeder kept filled, and 20+ Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that have been blitzing the feeder for some time. "More hummingbirds than we have ever had, fill the quart size feeeder at least once a day. Using 3:1 ratio."

Selasphorus sp. (Hummingbird) Pope Russellville 1-12-2002 1 Kenny & LaDonna Nichols January 12 thru at least February 2, 2002. At the home of Wanda and O'Neal Ridings. Photos. Rare visitor. We think that this bird was an immature female Rufous Hummer due to the back color (green), flank color (peachy), very limited flecking on the throat and a lot of orange in the tail. The outer retrix also looked very wide and thus probably eliminating Allen's Hummer.
