At home. Sat. A.M. Mar. 16 ‘07.

Dearest Mama:

As your other letter seems full weight and there’s considerable more we wanted to write we’ll start another. J. even wants to write so I’ll call it his letter and mine a note. We received your Jan. 29 letter yesterday also one from Lora written while they were unpacking. Am glad their things all got there so nicely. I am enclosing the list of books and music. John said he’d just fix the order for the music and you could enclose the money and send it & they could send it to us then he’d not have to wait for the box. He is very anxious for it. I don’t know where we got Meditation nor who it was by Alice will likely know. There are many Meditations but we want none but that pretty one Alice knows. I had it. We want it very much or we’d not trouble you about it. We have no list of music of any sort except that on the back of that instruction book of Warrens but J. knows more about composers than I do so he found lots of good things there. Then the organ for ‘07 can be sent every two months. We like to get things scattered along as much as possible and not all in a bunch.

But here I’m scribbling about al sorts of things and haven’t even told you about what to some people is a most important event. We had a letter yesterday from Rhoad written Feb. 28 in which he told of the arrival of a 7 lb. boy the night before - on your birthday. I was almost shocked to pieces. If you count up you’ll see there isn’t quite 3 weeks time over 9 months. I always supposed he’d rush the business but tho’t he’d be a little tho’tful. Dr. Henderson & Miss Gamertsfelder were there and both Nellie & the boy were doing fine. Mrs. Johnston wrote that she had a very easy time. Scarcely any pains and he wrote she was teaching until the day of confinement. Am very glad she’s doing so well for they’ve had no end of fever & all sorts of complaints. I believe Mrs. McKenrick expects a little one about the 25th. of this month. She’s been so miserable much of the time but must be better lately or we’d have heard. Dr. Henderson will be kept busy. I’ll bet Evans will have a lot to say about Rhoads. He never liked him very well any way. Well I don’t want to blame them but I do criticize them some. But when one knows how these people feel about such things it makes you kinda feel that to have the most influence with them you must get to business. They’ve named him Gordon Livingstone. We must write them a letter of congrats.

We received a nice large mail yesterday. Tuckers Cat. & a letter. I don’t understand what Miss Doehring has done with all your money but do hope we will soon know.

The old hippo was in the garden again last night. He’s hard to get now as it’s so dark nights. Yes we dare shoot lions but we haven’t had the chance yet. We’d like to get both a lion & leopard skin before we go home.

I was wondering how it would be if you’d send us several packages of Cream of Wheat. We have oatmeal and cornmeal but that’s all. Some one sent Hurlburts lots of p’k’ges of breakfast foods shredded wheat etc. But we tho’t cream of wheat about as good as anything. We may not send for every dollars worth but you can use what’s left for anything we’ve sent for before or since. Scissors for instance.

Your roll of papers didn’t come but may later. Wish you had kept the $3. of Mrs. Libbie S. and spent it for the Journal. Now I’ll keep it ‘til we go to Nairobi & get something with it.

Thanks for the squash pie recipe may try it when we have squash. Those you sent in little tin box are in little fruits. We hope they are hubbards. Yes, the alarm clock I bro’t you mean is going alright. Ridler fussed with it one day & put it off some but pretty good time. You bet the little planes are alright & so is the fellow that sent them. Haven’t used them much but hope to later. Wait til we get settled in the other house we’ll make all sorts of pretty things then. Muslin, bells etc is fine. Bells have been used every day. The big one for calling the workmen the little one on the table. We did hope Miss D. got those tin boxes for us but she evidently didn’t as all we’ve ever gotten was the folding bureau.

I see by your letter you still can find places to spend your money. Well we have no trouble in that line even out here. Thanks for the papers again. We do enjoy them. See Lora has a letter in one. For all the babies alover. Who said anything about race suicide.

Alice must be very busy haven’t heard a word for a long time but when we know she’s well & busy we don’t mind not hearing & she likely gets much of our news. When Papa & Warren have finished making fences there wish they’d come here & fence the garden. Am so sorry about Gene Ott.

Those pails are awful handy & if you can easily why send some. We get no fat but what we get from the sheep we buy for meat but they are getting so expensive that we can’t get very often so are saving with fat. J. had an Eng. Hymnal but doesn’t know where it is. We care most for a Ger. but want an Eng. very much. Will mention in a letter to his folks & you mention when you write them they may have it.

If there are other D.C. Cook books that you know I’ve not read & think we’d like add them. I haven’t read any but those we had before I left. If you think some things we send for are kinda funny just remember we’re in Africa & that’s funny too. The Encyclopedia we’re getting Lora mentioned as so fine. We have nothing in that line. Think the two sets from Mont. Co. will be rather nice.

I’ll stop now & write others. Had a letter from Mrs Lindbirger for two letters from us for State Conv. & Gen’l or something. I promised the girls at Kijabe I’d write you nothing about our W.M.S. so you’d see it first in Mess & be awfully surprised. I did write a letter for Miss Mess. Don’t know why it hasn’t been published.

We can’t understand Miss Gam. & others. Not a single word all these months. We almost feel as tho we had offended them in some way.

I have a new headache cure. Eno’s Fruit Salts. When I feel kinda funny I take some & most always helps at once. We use it much. Sort of bracing when one feels fagged. Used by many in hot climates.

Thanks for dandelion seed we’ll be careful.

Yours with the biggest kind of love

Florence.
