Butiaba,
Uganda, June 16, 1913. [ans/ 9/9/13]
Dear
Fellow workers:
Am
sending the receipts for the last two amounts and receipt for
Emergency Fund.
We
have been away from the Hill for 3 weeks so I’ve not seen Miss
Harland or Mr Gribble but I’m sure they will be satisfied. We
are
cutting a road from the Mission Station to the Boma or Gov’t
station - about 15 miles. We expect to be out another week.
Are
enjoying the change but will be glad when it’s all finished
and we
get home again.
The
hundred dollars certainly never could have come any handier.
Our
Kijabe goods are arriving and there’s extra expense besides as
the
English party are with us. Have been for six weeks. We are
writing
the sender this mail.
We
are occupying all the rooms of our house now but the verandas
aren’t
yet finished nor have we any windows yet, but we are quite
comfortable now & will be more so when we get the Kijabe
things
unpacked and the boxes made up into cupboards and doors.
We
are anxious to get at building the Ladies house. The bamboo
temporary houses we have used are very good but they last only
about
six months. The bamboo rots so quickly. A leopard has been
rather
troublesome around the station lately. Got our dog - which
most
broke Raymond’s heart as well as mine for I always felt so
safe
from thieves when John is away for the dog was a splendid
watcher. They have set the trap but he doesn’t come any more.
We
are expecting Mr. Hurlburt on July 7. Shall be so glad to see
him
again. Suppose Mr. Gribble & Dr. Newberry will be married
then. Our party will no doubt be scattered then too. We have
had a great
year together.
I
am sending an order to Montgomery Ward & Co. which you
will
please pay for me. Something like $10 I suppose; and then too
please
send Mrs. Riebe $10.- I’ve bought her desk. I’m writing her
too
by this mail so she will be expecting it. Send it as soon as
you
have any money for us. Thank you so much. Sorry to make the
extra
work for you but it will make a merrier Christmas for us.
May
God bless you in your work. It is so nice to get our money as
we do
now - so much more direct. The letter containing that large
draft
only came a short time ago via West Coast. We couldn’t imagine
why
we got no money but it finally got here. Better not to put
“Belgian
Congo” on at all.
Many
prayers and best wishes to all the workers
Florence
Stauffacher.
