[Poem, on clipping]

A NEW LEAF.

He came to my desk with a quivering lip,

The lesson was done -

Dear teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said,

I have spoiled this one.”

In place of the leaf so stained and blotted,

I gave him a new one, all unspotted,

And into his sad eyes smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

I went to the throne with a quivering soul,

The old year was gone -

Dear Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me?

I have spoiled this one.”

He took the old leaf, stained and blotted,

And gave me a new one, all unspotted,

And into my sad heart smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

[Additional poem, on clipping]

THE GLORY OF PRESSURE.

Pressed out of Measure.” --2 Cor. 1.8.

Pressed out of measure and pressed to all length;

Pressed so intensely it seems beyond strength;

Pressed in the body and pressed in the soul,

Pressed in the mind till the dark surges roll.

Pressure by foes, and pressure from friends,

Pressure on pressure, till life nearly ends.

Pressed into knowing no helper but God;

Pressed into loving the staff and the rod;

Pressed into liberty where nothing clings;

Pressed into faith for impossible things.

Pressed into living a life in the Lord,

Pressed into living a Christ-life outpoured.

At the close of 1917 -

This is quite a record to follow the above discouraging picture. [Top of page has Mar. 7 account of denial of permission to enter Kenya.] We are at New Orleans waiting to get on the boat for Africa.

God has worked & the way is open. Praise Him for it. He doeth all things well. We couldn't understand in Mar. We see more fully now & will see clearly some day; but we do thank Him for letting us go now.

'Twas hard to leave the dear ones at Hatboro. We hope the McQuilkins will follow in the next boat. The other dear friends we leave in His keeping til we meet again which will no doubt be in the air.

The year has been full. Fuller than any other. I'm sure. Just so He has been glorified. I know the coming year has much too. O that we may be faithful. If we can always realize that He may come any moment 'twill help to strengthen our faith. God help us all year in every thing to glorify Him.
