[Poem, on clipping]

A NEW LEAF.

He came to my desk with a quivering lip,

The lesson was done -

Dear teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said,

I have spoiled this one.”

In place of the leaf so stained and blotted,

I gave him a new one, all unspotted,

And into his sad eyes smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

I went to the throne with a quivering soul,

The old year was gone -

Dear Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me?

I have spoiled this one.”

He took the old leaf, stained and blotted,

And gave me a new one, all unspotted,

And into my sad heart smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

[Additional poem, on clipping]

THE GLORY OF PRESSURE.

Pressed out of Measure.” --2 Cor. 1.8.

Pressed out of measure and pressed to all length;

Pressed so intensely it seems beyond strength;

Pressed in the body and pressed in the soul,

Pressed in the mind till the dark surges roll.

Pressure by foes, and pressure from friends,

Pressure on pressure, till life nearly ends.

Pressed into knowing no helper but God;

Pressed into loving the staff and the rod;

Pressed into liberty where nothing clings;

Pressed into faith for impossible things.

Pressed into living a life in the Lord,

Pressed into living a Christ-life outpoured.

When we looked into it 'twas very white so when doctor McCord called to see Mrs Jay I asked him to look at R's throat. He feared diphtheria & kept the others away. Took swab & found it was. Health officer came & suggested we take R. to hospital. I wanted to go too but he said no. The doctor injected antitoxin. R stood it like a man & when we found he'd have to go alone he was very brave. It seems awful! When I go into the room & his bed is empty I feel as tho he was dead. Talked late with Andersens – sitting on veranda – on healing. In my own mind I can't come to any conclusion. Every one is very sympathetic & helpful.

Tues. Dec. 31

So very windy. Some clouds. Have again come to the close of 1918. and things are taking place very rapidly now making His coming seem nearer than ever. Suppose many are keeping watch night. Wonder how many are praying.

At the close of 1918.

How good God has been to us again this year. Seems like we are very favored in some ways. So thankful to be back in Africa again. So thankful too that the war is ended. No doubt there are many thankful hears in all countries tonight. Wonder, how we wonder whether we'll be here to close 1919. If not here then in a still better place where we wont care when 1919 closes. I am not sure of the state of the boys' hearts. I want to be as helpful as possible & yet not push matters too much. I think they are saved but am not sure.

Hope we can do more preaching & teaching next year than we have this year. Mr Fuller D.C. [District Commissioner] says there are 30,000 Masai on the Reserve. That will keep us busy for awhile. May we trust Him to bring things about so much time may be spent among them. Hope another lady worker may come here... There are many things we would like if He thot best for us: another house. A ricksha or some means of getting to & from Kijabe. Under-part of a tent. Have Gribbles good fly. He knows all abt it & will give us what we need. Another thing is my hearing. Would be so glad to have it restored but will praise Him any way. There may be some service I can render better by not hearing so well. He knows & He is able.

May I fret less & trust more in 1919.
