[Poem, on clipping]
A NEW LEAF.
He came to my desk with a quivering lip,
The lesson was done -
“Dear teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said,
“I have spoiled this one.”
In place of the leaf so stained and blotted,
I gave him a new one, all unspotted,
And into his sad eyes smiled -
“Do better now, my child.”
I went to the throne with a quivering soul,
The old year was gone -
“Dear Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me?
I have spoiled this one.”
He took the old leaf, stained and blotted,
And gave me a new one, all unspotted,
And into my sad heart smiled -
“Do better now, my child.”

THE GLORY OF PRESSURE.
“Pressed
out of Measure.” --2 Cor. 1.8.
Pressed out of measure and pressed to all length;
Pressed so
intensely it seems beyond strength;
Pressed in
the body and pressed in the soul,
Pressed in
the mind till the dark surges roll.
Pressure by
foes, and pressure from friends,
Pressure on
pressure, till life nearly ends.
Pressed
into knowing no helper but God;
Pressed
into loving the staff and the rod;
Pressed
into liberty where nothing clings;
Pressed
into faith for impossible things.
Pressed
into living a life in the Lord,
Pressed
into living a Christ-life outpoured.

plain & plunged into a water hole. Fine sight. Mr. B.
went after them & wounded one but didn't get it. Left
camp abt 6 & rode til 10:30. Other wagon went in to
Kijabe.
Sun. Mar. 9

nicely today. Every one is lovely to me. Jno

Mon.
Apr.
21
Ideal day. Fine
picnic. Most
every one came. Ate under the big tree. Spread out the
tent. all seemed to enjoy it. Plenty of eats. Children
weren't hungry for supper. Read stories til bedtime.
Alfred & Eddie went to prayerm't'g. Miss Slater at
hospital all night. Got permission to go to Reserve.
Tues. Apr 22
Rainy again.
Not very
good lessons today. All seem to try
to do right. Went to see Mrs. H. this eve. Wrote Miss
Simpson. Expect her to stay at Matara. Don't think D's
boys will go to Reserve this time. Went to prayer service.
Wed. Apr. 23
Miss Kolachny led prayer m't'g. Good. Working at
pieces & program all spare time. Divided seeds with Mrs.
D & Mrs H.
Thurs. Apr. 24
Agnes staid & we classified all pupils as well
as we could. Mr. Bell called for her. Mrs H went to Miss
Zimmermans today.
Fri. Apr. 25
Telegram that party left coast this A.M. Miss Engle
sick with fever. Practice songs every day. Getting rooms
ready at south end.
Sat. Apr. 26
Set out some
flowers in the corner. Jno, Grace & I went to meet the
party. Most stay here. Seem very nice. Miss Engle at

ill. Is Mr Smiths girl. Very tired.

seems willing. Jno led P.M. meeting. Herdman led prayerm't'g
in sitting room.

Wed. Apr. 30
Practiced P.M. Miss Engle & Miss Souther both
in this morning. Very cold prayer meeting – but few staid
after and prayed til midnight. Things opened up somewhat.
Thur. May 1
Some good was done last night even tho it was hard
to pray. A very necessary confession was made. Meeting this
noon. Program tonight was good. Most every one out. We are
very unsettled. But think will stay. I can't feel perfectly
happy abt it because the boys will be disappointed but I
think it's right. Awful burden of prayer on me this A.M.
Never experienced anything like it before.
Fri. May 2
Dr. Blakeslee
& McK. & Beth left. Children were crying this morn
because they couldn't go away so we quickly got all ready
&
Miss Slater & Kennedy with them went to Lake Nakuru
for picnic. Worked hard. Gardiners came for dinner. Jno to
prayerm't'g at 2 P.M.
Sat. May 3 *
Much work & only 2 boys. Ndanieri to Nairobi
& Ithaka to Nakuru. Every one helpt and got thro very
nicely. I went to 10 AM meeting. Also 2 P.M. Miss Souther is
fine in the kitchen. Much much prayer is made these days. Up
til midnight again.
Sun. May 4
Expected great things today. Felt the Spirit's
power but not as manifest as should be. Telegram- Miss
Slater is sick. D's will meet her with cart. J & I had
quiet PM & walk. Communion – but so much oppression that
it most choked us.
Mon. May 5
Children came.
Miss S quite ill with threatened dysentery. Men carried
her to hospital. All confusion & commotion in building but quietness in
my heart. How
God helps. Meetings in “Rest a while”. P.M. meeting with
natives. Very depressive.
Tues. May 6
Miss Engle helps at noon. I get all vegs. agoing
before 10 then leave for meeting in “Rest awhile”. Again
have supper all planned & attend 2 P.M. meeting. Herdman
greatly helpt last night. Near midnight before we get to
bed.
Wed. May 7
I seem to be
having victory all along for which I greatly praise God.
Still great depression in P.M. so decided hereafter to
meet in separate building. Herdman led tonight. Great meeting. Smith seemed to be
thinking hard. Miss S. went to Nairobi with Dr. Maynard.
Have special joy tonight & feel devil can never trip
me up again. 'Most 2 A.M. before retiring.
Thur. May 8
Nasty thots come sometime but have been able to put
them aside. I leave the future with Him. Good meeting again.
Smith didn't come. Grandma Myers moved her bed over so she
can stay over night when rainy. She has beaming face today.
Fri. May 9
O! what a jolt
I got today. Such
thots & bitter feelings as came when we came from P.M.
service. Wrong baskets had been sent to Harry Hurlburt but
'twas enuf for me to fall- so
flat. No rest in service. No joy in prayer or testimony.
Nothing but bitter bitter feelings. Only 9:30 to bed.
Sat. May 10
(Back) Had help in kitchen. Miss Souther baked
cake. Eddie helpt well; so went to m't'g. No P.M. meeting.
Good evening service. Mr. Smith silent.
[from back] May 10, 1919. How miserable I was last
night. So talked to John or rather he talked to me.
Explained things so splendidly & pointed out so simply
where he thot my mistake had been. and I felt much relieved
& strengthened & expected to have things set all OK
this morning. But not so. all I could think about was Rom.
7:24 “O wretched man that I am, etc”. Again & again I
declared all was in God's hands. but got no relief. Went to
“Rest awhile” with J. & while waiting for others here
she comes. Then I felt I couldn't possibly say any
thing to others abt my failure. However I over came & did
tell & while we prayed God's quietness came into my
heart & I do praise Him for it so much. Never,
never before, have I had such a struggle. How He helpt thro
J. I'll never forget it. I'm almost afraid, sometimes, that
something may happen to J. for I fear I love him too much.
We are seeing every day wonderful answers to prayer. Mr
Smith was so bitter last night. Read scripture to show
public testimony & prayer are not necessary. We do pray
for him.
Dr Blakeslee & Misses Hayes & Kennedy &
Tyler are expected in this eve. I have no feelings of
resentment left in me at all & by God's help I never
will have any again.
Sun. May 11
Whites met in small school building while general
native service was held in chapel. R & C. started the
dinner so all went. P.M. meeting was testimony & fine.
continued this eve. J & I had breakfast in bed &
such a nice talk & study of Bible verses together. So
helpful.
Mon. May 12
[from back] Mon. morning May 12. Such good meetings
yesterday. Mr Seelig testified to the victorious life. Mr
Brolin came last eve & prayed God would restore him to
peace of heart. Mr Smith testified & prayed. God is
workig. O how we pray He will continue in our hearts as well
as well as the natives. Miss Roberts still not satisfied.
Something hinders her from full surrender or some other
difficulty.
Miss Kennedy
& Dr Maynard went to Nairobi. Has been an awful hard
day. Temptations faster than I could take care of them.
Ab't ready to give up. Good talk with Jno. while walking up &
down veranda. He always helps so. Miss S & I called on
Mrs Hurlburt after P.M. meeting.
Tues. May 13
Guess Jno was
right in
saying the tempter will
stop sometime. Have been much quieter today along some
lines, at least. Called on Mrs D. as she's not well. Had
long talk. Congo people very
busy packing office stuff. May they go filled with His power. Encouraging
native P.M. meeting. The Lord is
working.
Wed. May 14
Mr. Tyler led evening service. We met in “Rest
awhile” both AM & P.M. for fear the natives were
depending too much on the fact that we were praying. More
freedom in prayer today again. Talked with Miss S. about
going home with Scudders.
Thur. May 15
Very heavy this
morning again. Do enjoy the Bible so much & have deep
joy but Satan - - - Very anxious for bed time so I can
think!!!! Mr. Herdman had cable this morning instead of
letter last night. He was tempted to be anxious but turned
it over to the Lord & in answer came the cable. How we do pray we may have a
blessed day tomorrow.
Fri. May 16
Jno led. Good meeting but so few out. Such peace
& quietness I have today. Can hardly believe I have the
same “insides” as I had yesterday. I Pet. 1:5 & II Tim.
1:12 were my help. Every one so busy packing. May God speak
to them as they go. Very cold & very foggy all day. Miss
Slater was out. Cable that 5 left May 7. Mr. Guilding will
sail 25 & Mr. Tylers passport came tonight so he's going
too.
Sat. May 17
We thot really the Congo people were off. Several
of us staid home as it rained & was muddy but on the way
to the station a wagon slipt off the bank & smashed some
of the things & next Mr. Bell was to come from Nairobi
& didn't & haven't heard of him yet tho Mr Barnett
came – both were to come on first train but missed. Nothing
is heard of Bell, all very strange.
Sun. May 18
Mr Bell came
this A.M. by freight. Missed first train so tried to catch
it at Kikuyu by riding his wheel which broke down then
took a motor which also broke down. so missed 2nd
train. Then walked to Kikuyu & took freight. 9 A.M.
meeting. Also 10
A.M. & 4 P.M. Dr Blakeslee led. Very good.
R. & C. went with Farnsworths to the station to sleep.
We expect to go to Nairobi in morning. Had talk with Miss
S. but she is bound to go back.
Mon. May 19
Got down in
time. Very muddy tho. Got most
everything we wanted. Mr. Seelig went too. Dr. Maynard
got on to go up as we got off. Girls all went to the hill
to Kikuyu meeting. Only 7 at prayer m't'g. Boys pretty
tired. Guess Miss Souther has had enough too. Glad we
don't need to go every week.
Tues. May 20
Mr. Barnett is here for tonight. Miss Slater has
returned to her room too. Miss Souther has gone to Mrs Myers
to sleep. Prayerm't'gs as usual. Only 5 out at 2 P.M.
Wed. May 21
New wash boy here. Tyler & Guilding left this
morning. Andersens came. Mrs. A. stays at hospital awhile.
Mr. A & Earl stay at Downings. Mr. Barnett left. Alfred
& Eddie moving into twins room.
Thur. May 22
Meetings as usual. Interest seems to be lagging
some. But we need not look to others but only to God. Dr.
Allen wants Miss S. to go with him & we wish she would
but she wont.
Fri. May 23
Miss Slater
just wont stay out of kitchen. Course I attend A.M. &
P.M. prayermeetings & leave boys do many things. I
believe God wants us to pray
now. I let
other things take 2nd. place. Praying much today
that the Lord will have His way about Miss S. going to
Matara.
Sat. May 24
Dr. Allen returned but not Miss S. Mr. Downing
spoke to her this PM. & she is now willing to go. Miss
Slater insisted on coming into the kitchen & we put up
our tent on tennis court toward hospital. Also our beds so
sleep here. So quiet compared to the building. Went to
Hurlburts to see Eddie Harrison & wife.
Sun. May 25
Miss Slater
sent out breakfast. All enjoyed it so much. Went to 9 A.M.
meeting also 10:30 and then a good
rest and meeting at 4. Mr. Bell led. Many out. Good
testimony. Guilding & Tyler are supposed to sail
today.
Mon. May 26
Took meals at Academy today but moved everything
out so will cook ourselves tomorrow. Hetz & Bell went
hunting. So few seem to feel the importance of praying.
Tues. May 27
It is fine to be out here. Gacoka cooked for us - -
The boys work Arith. Raymond didn't do all he should have.
tomorrow we're asked to Hetzes all day. Hunters came back
but had nothing. Only 5 at P.M. meeting again. Don't
understand why Dr. Blakeslee doesn't come.
Wed. May 28
Were at Hetzes for dinner & supper. Nice time.
Caldwells there too. Expect to leave Mon. for coast &
sail on Tues. Agnes led prayerm't'g. Mostly testimony. Asked
Dr B. why she doesn't attend and like all others she says
“too busy”. May God show us all just what is required.
All meetings as usual. At 3:30 Jno & I went to
Brolins for tea. Samuel Caldwell came to play with the boys.
Mr. Herdman sent us some sausages – good. He had a talk with
Mr. Downing this morn. Don't know what will come of it. I
talked & talked with Agnes abt seeing Mrs. D. Hope she
will.
Fri. May 30
Made a mistake all month & never noticed it til
now. [All entries made on page preceding correct one.]
However if I never make a mistake that counts for any more
than this I'll be thankful.
Everything as usual. Mrs. Propst came down bringing
her 3 & the twins. R. did lots Arith. Will almost finish
tomorrow. Jno at printing office most all day- no typing
done. Wrote letter home. Letter from Roxie Stalker with
enclosures from Trilby & Rexie & Tommy.
Sat. May 31
Jno & boys went to station. I staid with Mrs.
Hurlburt. Bot chicken from Mrs. Myers. Paid board bill. Mr.
Waechter came stopt here at tent & had tea.
Never before have I had such a May – in all my 38
years. We had hoped to see the revival fire spread ere this
but no doubt we aren't ready for it yet. “Lord prepare us
speedily for it.”
Sun. June 1
R. & C. got dinner. At least watched it &
it was fine. We went first to 9 oclock prayer then 10:30
Native and 2 P.M. when 20 were baptized. And at 4 P.M.
Caldwell & Waechter spoke. Latter was very searching.
Communion.
Mon. June 2
School opened. Evening services at Kendalls. Miss
Simpson takes study hour. R. studies here at the tent. Baked
a cake – for tomorrow. Tried to rain a little. Got
translations Galatians to Philemon in book form. Fine.
Tues. June 3
I had baked a
cake for Jno but it was too rich so Miss Slater did
another. Mr & Mrs Brolin came also Miss Slater and had
coffee made Swedish way. Very
good. Very foggy. Gacoka washed. Not dry tho.
Wed. June 4
Mrs. H. asked us all to supper. Such a good supper
& nice visit. Mrs Myers & Mrs Propst there to tea.
Mr. Downing found I & II Cor. in his desk. Had given it
up as lost. Only Miss Simpson Jno & I to meeting this
P.M. Miss Lovell left for coast. Asked us to live at
Hospital if convenient but rather not.
Thur. June 5
Mrs. Caldwell received telegram they aren't sailing
for two weeks. Gave her Rs 5 for grinder. Mrs H. may bring
it. Jno & I were alone at P.M. meeting but just started
when Miss S came. Wrote Cora & Miss Kolachny. Typed
some. Troubled about hearing but He'll make it right.
Fri. June 6
Troubled about
going home to Siabei. He'll take care of it too. I just
pray for grace to keep my hands off. My heart isn't yet filled with His love to all. It will come. He has
promised. Luke 11:13. Letter & pictures of Kiambogo
from Mrs. Conover. Went to see Mrs Andersen but visited
mostly with Mrs. Downing.
Sat. June 7
Every thing seemed to go wrong. Wanted early dinner
then it was later than usual. Wanted long walk but staid at
Brolins after drinking coffee, so supper was late. It's
alright tho. Self is not to be considered. How He does teach
us every day.
Sun. June 8
Lovely day. Went to 9 prayer service then the woods
were so tempting we all walked up to Harry's Garden of Eden.
Had lunch under trees on hospital lawn. Bees that the boys
hived are hanging in bunch on bush returned them to box.
Herdman led meeting. Very good. Many visitors. J & I
talked about returning to Siabei. Can't agree altogether.
Leaving it for the Lord to settle.
Mon. June 9
Much as usual & still not usual. Temptations
thick & fast but the Lord helpt. Mrs. Hetz & Mrs
Caldwell called. We had supper at Herdman's (corned beef
hash & fried eggs. Good too.) Prayer service there as
Kendalls were in Nairobi. Rather encouraging word from Mr
Downing abt stopping classes for more prayer. God is
working.

know how to pray that the Lord may be glorified these days.

their hearts in spite of the loss they rejoice. Meetings as
usual. Mr. Herdman wants
[ink blot]
Sat. June 14
Cloudy mostly. Got started up hill by 8:30. Stopt
in a garden and bot some green peas & ate them. Left
Gacoka at home to help Miss Slater. Ndanieri returned. Went
to a swamp & got some pretty gladiolus. Gave to Mrs.
Kendall. Had roast potatoes & corned beef & drank

somewhat relieved. At Mrs. Myers for dinner & Downings

not His will. We have no will in the matter.
Sun. June 22
Ideal day. So fine that we took lunch after prayer
service & went to Thungi tungi falls. Did enjoy every
min. Even the scramble down thro the brush. Had talk with

called with Soibi so we rested rather late. Good meeting
tonight.
Mon. June 30
Started school. Never before did I feel so
helpless. Dreaded for time to come to open school. Partly
perhaps because of poor hearing. Tagi helpt today. Will
translate tomorrow. We 5 had prayer in tent in woods. Asking
especially for Enoch.
The 6th
month of the year done. Already half past. How time goes.
These are rather strange days. half lonely half glad &
still trusting Him to do with us as He sees best.

Tues. Nov. 4
Washed. This P.M. while resting it was rumbling
awful & about 1 a storm broke. Look at back for
description. If ever Africa seemed freaky it did today.
[From back:] “The
storm started ab't 1:15 with big drops- came from N.W. at
first. Jno had taken blanket from the south bed room wall
to put up shelf. As we couldn't sleep we began putting
up the burlap but had just started when wind & hail
began to come terribly & the wind changed to S.W.
& came into our room blowing onto my bed. We held the
burlap up as well as we could & most froze our fingers.
Everything on the bureau got soaked & dirty & the
things in front of the window too. Had to move R's bed.
C's got pretty wet. Never saw such hail storm in B.E.A.
Hail lay in heaps. I had bread in the oven but thot no
harm would be done by leaving it there but found later the
rain had run in & the big pan of bread was soaked. I
could hardly keep tears back. for last weeks bread couldn't
be
eaten. We feared for awhile the roof might go but we were
spared. After it stopt raining we went out to see damage.
Corn leaves are in shreds. but otherwise garden things
weren't badly hurt. Quantities of water fell. Boys were
pretty well washed out the roof leaked so. Our roof was
fine if only the walls were as good. The opposite hillside
was a solid flood of rushing water. Ground is covered with
bits of leaves. Made a little ice cream for the children.
May be some ice left still tomorrow. & if we get milk
can make more.
Broke a tree to the west of the house. A little
bright sunshine just before setting helpt to get things dry.
Fairly comfy tonight considering- and no real damage done,
only 'twill take some drying & work to get things into
order again. We thank God 'twas no worse & hope another
testing time may be met with more “rejoicing” than this was.
See Daily Light for this day.”
The box from mama was fine. Everything in lovely
screw top tins- so useful. School & boys & all were
measly today. Hope the storm cleared the systems as well as
atmosphere.
Wed. Nov. 5 Ice cream

the soaked bread. Mr. R. sent meat, milk eggs & butter.

home before school closes.
Mon. Nov. 24

in the morning. Dread to think of his leaving- but he'll
likely be back in 10 days. He cut the wheat & piled onto
the veranda roof to dry. Killed rooster.
Tues. Nov. 25
Rather singular that Jno should be leaving again
for Kjb. [John & Florence were leaving for Kijabe this
date 1 yr ago.] Got off in pretty good time. Cloudy &

loneliness for Jno. Tonight cut brush. Want to clear the

It is lonely without John & hope he may never need to go

deal. Will wear supports when I get home. Last day of 1919.
What has been accomplished? Not much, I fear.
[From Memoranda at back of diary.] Another year is
done. The record as I see it I have in this book. How I
wonder how it compares with the Fathers account. Many things
have been left undone that should have been done. many, no
doubt, were done that had better been left undone. May He
give tact and wisdom and discernment during the coming year
to do just the worthwhile things. just those that count for
eternity.
We have many plans for the work among the Masai and
our chief prayer is that He may be glorified among
the people; whether thro' our words, or only by our prayers
or by our lives. in everything may He be seen.
I do want to be used of Him in a more definite way
than ever before. I want to be so yielded to His will and
power that He may be able to use me in prayer for any who
have special needs. That He may lay such needs on my heart
& I may be able to help pray thro. May His Holy Spirit
be able to rule and direct my life as He desires, to His
glory.
I praise Him for what He has taught both Jno &
me during the year. The Bible is much more wonderful than
ever before & prayer is much easier. but we do long for
still more of His power in our lives. Power over sin, self
& the devil.
My health is fine. My hearing, I fear, is worse but
I'm much less worried about it & just trust Him to do
what will glorify Him most. We are all wonderfully well.
Praise Him for it. Tonight we are in camp at Guaso Nyiro –
returning from a 2 weeks safari. Expect to get home
tomorrow. Went down to Endasegera, on the east side of
mountains & back on west. Great possibilities to reach
the people at certain seasons. Hope to do itinerating here
in Apr. & May when people are here. Next trip will be to
Kijabe for Conf. Jan. 27 – Feb. 1. May the Holy Spirit have
His way at that gathering.
When will He come. We ask again as
we think of the New Year. Perhaps this year! We long to be
with Him & still we want many more of these people to be
won for Him. Praise Him for the Hope He gives us.
