[Poem, on clipping]
A NEW LEAF.
He came to my desk with a quivering lip,
The lesson was done -
“Dear
teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said,
“I
have spoiled this one.”
In place of the leaf so stained and blotted,
I gave him a new one, all unspotted,
And into his sad eyes smiled -
“Do
better now, my child.”
I went to the throne with a quivering soul,
The old year was gone -
“Dear
Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me?
I have spoiled this one.”
He took the old leaf, stained and blotted,
And gave me a new one, all unspotted,
And into my sad heart smiled -
“Do
better now, my child.”
[Additional poem, on clipping]
THE GLORY OF PRESSURE.
“Pressed
out of Measure.” --2 Cor. 1.8.
Pressed out of measure and pressed to all length;
Pressed so intensely it seems beyond strength;
Pressed in the body and pressed in the soul,
Pressed in the mind till the dark surges roll.
Pressure by foes, and pressure from friends,
Pressure on pressure, till life nearly ends.
Pressed into knowing no helper but God;
Pressed into loving the staff and the rod;
Pressed into liberty where nothing clings;
Pressed into faith for impossible things.
Pressed into living a life in the Lord,
Pressed into living a Christ-life outpoured.
Thur. Jan. 1
I did not read the Bible thro as I
expected to do. We got home ab't 4 P.M. A good way to
celebrate for we were indeed happy to get here. Stopt at
Rainbows but didn't bring kitty as she ran away & they
hadn't found her. Lots of letters, got soaked in rain on way
from Narok.
Fri. Jan. 2
Gacoka washed. Busy getting straight. Had long hunt
for gun license. M. took check to Boma to cash & look
for kitty. Rats are terrible. Gacoka had saved 54 eggs. Nice
to have so many. Arches are very painful but am wearing
supports. Hope will soon be OK. Think I'll try again to read
Bible thro.
Sat. Jan. 3

Got 24 lbs. beef. Trying to salt some to take to Conf. Got 5
eggs today. Rained quite hard again & is thundering now.

Tues. June 29 Kellers
Boys & donkeys left early. Our train on time
& found Dr. Blakeslee on bound for Miss Boldts. She was
in I Class & we got in with her. At Kisumu Goanese
wanted to collect I Class fare. We refused & they said
they'd send word to Traffic Manager. We think it will come
to nothing. Mr. Ford was there & I rode with him on
motor to Mr. Kellers- & found Mrs K was formerly Mrs
Wittick whom we had met at Freretown. Jno & Mr B walked
out.
Wed. June 30 Kaimosi
This morn. Mr. Ford brot me out via Maragoli. He
returned for Mrs. F. Mr. Chilson came & then went out
& met the men (J. & Mr B.) bringing them in one at a

too. Beautiful grounds & buildings. We are at Hoyts.
Chilsons are in guest house & eat here. Mr B. also in
guest house. Mr Hoyt went to Ogada & got Miss Boldt
& Dr B. also Mrs Keller.
We are grateful to be here at this time. I don't
know of a company of people I would rather be with.
[Quakers] spiritual & Godly and kind & friendly. God
is good to give us this privelege. Mr Chilson insists on
introducing us as “our people working in the A.I.M.”
Thur. July 1
Mrs. Keller has been ill all day with something
like gall stones. Mr. K. came this morn. Much waiting in
silence during today's services. Mr. Ford spoke helpfully
this A.M. on Eph. 3:13-21. P.M. meeting was informal. Mostly
on thot of unbelief as sin. Rising bell 5:30. Quiet 6-7.
Meeting 9. P.M. meeting 2:30.
Fri. July 2
Mr. Moon spoke in A.M. meeting. Things are breaking
up somewhat; but still not great liberty tho we realize the
Spirit is working. Family prayer after supper &
then music usually. Moon's piano is here. Hoyts boys play
violins nicely. Mrs. K. still in bed.
Sat. July 3
Jno led A.M. Very helpful m't'g. Much more liberty
all day. P.M. mt'g very good too. Did a little washing &
ironing between times. Mrs Hoyt serves lovely meals. We
enjoy the fruit. No word from Johnston so we may go out to
Chilsons. Miss Boldt wants us to come there too.
Sun. July 4
Conf. is over. God has blest. & we'd like to
continue. Mr. Chilson brot a good message this A.M. Dr
Blakeslee this P.M. Some of her talk fitted me fine. then
one point I can't get clear & would like to ask her ab't
it. J & I talked long. He doesn't entirely agree with
her either. We do so pray god to entirely direct in the Oct.
Conference. Chilsons may try to stay for it. Due to leave in

Decided to have baptismal service tomorrow P.M. Mr.
Brain who is with Andersens will be here & wants to be

hinder the Sprirts work in our hearts or the hearts of
others. We understand Acts 2:38 in a new way. Mr Andersen
came this P.M. Others will come tomorrow morning. Talked a
long time this eve. Mr. A shares Mr. Barnett's room.
Sun. July 11
Mingled feelings. Can't describe them. Our hearts
are full of joy & we praise God for showing us what He
has. The day has been full of enjoyment of all sorts. Mrs.
A. Earl & Mr. Brain came this morning. Mrs. A. looks so
well. We gave messages at native service: J. Mr. Barnett

during service & started to rain as we came up hill but
we didn't get wet. Had tea & talked til supper &
again afterward. & songs & prayer. 11:30 when we

caring for. Loveliest flower garden I've seen in long time.
Plenty of rooms for all.

we hurried off. Got many cuttings again. Supposed to be 12
miles but seemed very long. J & I walked mostly. Earl
walked too. Got here ab't 11:15 before the cart. Mr. B. off.
Telegram from Mrs B. seemed worried ab't us. Mr. A. replied.
Baths. Walked to dukas. Very civilized here. Trains, motors
etc.
Sun. July 18
And now he's 12. Wish we could have had the
children here today but we'll see them soon. Quiet day. Morn
service in Swahili. P.M. service. One neighbor in. Took long
walk & talked long after supper. Heavy rain. Think
likely the cart will meet us at Londiani instead of motor
cycle.
Mon. July 19 Ravine
Jno & I left 8:15. Boy carrying load was guide.
but he knew only part way. & we missed the path &
went past Londiani so returned. When we got to school house

had bedding at home we'd have gone home tonight by lantern
light. Got here at 5:15. Got supper & went to bed.
Didn't even go to the shops. 'Twill be so nice to get home
tomorrow.
July has been a great month in more ways than one.
Our great privilege has been in getting around to so many
stations & seeing so much work. Then too we realize as
never before how God is uniting us on the question of the big
need for all is in-filling of Holy Spirit.
Sun. Aug. 1
Got home ab't 10:30. Met Mr Herdman on the road.
Claudon rode mule most of the way. Very nice to be here
again. Everything pretty dry. Lots of fruit (cape tomatoes

not want to stay so Olgoai will help again. Mr Clarke came
for tea & supper. Jno intended resting several days but
is already planning at going at the house tomorrow.

were a sad bunch. This baby seems stronger than the other
did. Haki, Nyakeiru's mother has been here. Goes back
tomorrow as Kiheriko is sick. Mr Clarke sent me tin of pearl

cake. Jno & Mr. H at Clarke's for dinner. Laid a good
deal of the veranda foundation. Bathed this P.M. Jno has a
very sore toe. “Snakey” cat is missing for two days now. So
sorry. Our little cat seems to miss her too.
Sun. Aug. 8
Cold wind. Company all came. We were 10 in all at
dinner. All left about 4:45. God has been dealing very
definitely with me the last few days. Read “Dynamic of
Faith” & realize where I've failed in the past. Now
I know the Holy Spirit is in my heart and
when temptations come I simply turn to Him for deliverance.
And He has wonderfully delivered even today. &
yesterday. I do thank God for what He does day by day.
Mon. Aug. 9
R. developed film with Mr Clarke. School opened
today. Last week I did dread the beginning of school work
but the day has been quite ideal. Jno & I had such a
blessed talk last night. He too has just accepted & is
believing the Spirit is dwelling in his heart. I have quiet
& rest no great bubbling joy. He has more joy but we're
not looking to results but just to Him. God
be praised for His wonderful love in giving the Holy Spirit.
Tues. Aug. 10

Fri. Aug. 13
Thinking much about “faith” these days. Jno & I
were at prayer when Mr. H. came. Had a very good
prayermeeting tonight. Tetian, Nanjiru & Enoch 'fessed
to sin. The Spirit is working. We believe God will
do still more.
Sat. Aug. 14
Baked etc. Another meeting tonight. More
Confessions. We feel the opposition of Satan but the
Sprirt's working is very evident for which we praise God.
Sun. Aug. 15
Very cold & terribly windy. Mr. Herdman shut
himself up for study & prayer. Didn't come out til tea
time. Jno spent A.M. with Mr. Clarke. We had S.S. as usual
but not at all usual- The Spirit was there. Tonight Jno gave
his experience & I added a little then confession came.
More awful than before. We stopt after services & had
prayer around the coals. Wonderful meeting.
Mon. Aug. 16
I'm writing this next night for last night it was
midnight when we got home. Very little was said all evening.
God gave Jno no liberty to speak. Enoch prayed Tagi spoke.
The Spirit was working but very little was manifest. Nanjiru
washed & Raymond ironed.
Tues. Aug. 17
More liberty in meeting tonight but some hinders.
Jno made “belief in Jesus” very plain but it seems hard for
any to grasp it. Mulungit has not yet returned. Enoch seems
very much in earnest but seems to be making no great
headway.
Wed. Aug. 18
A strange thing happened tonight. We met to pray
& ended in a wrangle. Gashisha testified & that
seemed to roil Gerimani & he began to argue ab't the
calves that ate his corn, etc etc. Tagi & Enoch staid
& explained. God hasn't finished yet with Gerimani.
Thur. Aug. 19
Mr. R- came to have tooth pulled. Enoch left today
for Kikuyu country to get his wife. Mulungit returned. Brot
2 huge cauliflower heads. One weighed 7 lbs. Nothing much
doing at services. Jno took love for his talk & it
struck home to Gerimani. May God use it to His glory.

Rainbows. Jno working at timbers for roof. Got 6 made. Had

washed. More timbers up. Only 4 more to put up then they'll
go at veranda roof. Twill be very roomy & nice upstairs.

Tues. Aug. 24
Nasty cold wind & clouds. At recess called all
boys over & raised veranda posts into place. Looks so
fine. Women came to sew. Got a few letters off, but not home
letter. Too cold to sit up & write. Mulungit gave a fine
testimony & evidently has a new power within him.
Wed. Aug. 25
Just finished supper when Mr. Andersen came also
Mr. Clarke. It rained pretty hard- so much so that we didn't
have any meeting. Mr. Andersen came all the way from Kjb
horseback. Sleeps at Clarkes tonight. Our bedding.
Thur. Aug. 26
While sitting at the fire after mt'g a man &
woman stept to the door & asked for shelter. A Mr Tryon

out. Good meeting tonight M. & T. gave such good clear
testimonies. J. went to call boys to help bring things up
& found them praying at Dilais.
Fri. Aug. 27
Heard today that Gerimani was leaving. At first I
felt disappointed but we talked & prayed ab't it &
all feel the Lord will do in his life what we are
asking for. Talked with him this eve. He says he's not going
for good but to find money for rent. J. offered him some
& we'll see now if he goes anyway. Kariuki went for oil.
They left 4 P.M. Soibi professes to know what “filled with
H.S.” is.

Cloudy & warm. Clarke here supper. Rather quiet
restful day. S.S. as usual. Bad headache all PM & still.
Evening service at Kraal. Tagi spoke well. followed by
Ndilai & Soibi, both spoke very earnestly. I am

He can cure & am quite sure He will. God give full
assurance.
*Mon. Aug. 30 Sera Olduboi 1 yr old.

are there. Andersen here to dinner. Had trial for shooting
buck.
Tues. Aug. 31
Awful hard A.M. Much to do & little patience.

to Narok. Natives looking for snake python for Mr Denny
(picture man) to take. So no native school.
Wed. Sept. 1
Not much mail. Men cut trees in woods. We took
lunch up. Staid til 2 PM. Got about half cut. Meeting as
usual tonight. Tetian & Gerimani still have no
testimony. Lord keep us patient & steady in faith. Women
don't come any more.
We've certainly had our eyes opened this last month

helpt us.”

read Rev. 21-22. Mr. Woodley read Jno 14 & a small

born again & any interesting incident. Those there were:
Mrs Myers – Pa.
Mr. Bailey – Ohio
Miss McKinstry – Mich
Mrs. Bailey – Tenn.
Dr. Blakeslee – Pa.
Dr Davis – New Jersey
Miss Cable – Conn.
Mrs Davis – New York
I – Illinois
Mrs Kendall – Cal.
Mrs Propst – Pa.
Mr. Kendall – N. Mex.
Mr & Mrs Woodley – Ohio
John – Wis.
Then as it neared midnight we bowed in prayer.
Several prayed. & we joined hands & sang “Blest be
the Tie” then came home. 'Twas all very pleasant.
In many ways this has been a wonderful year. Some
of the experiences have been very new & blessed & I
do pray God to lead us on & on to know just how to trust
Him more.
He has shown us many mistakes & hindrances
& has helpt to remove them. Has shown us the awfulness
of “an evil heart of unbelief” and also how to be free from
it & to trust Him in the most difficult places. I do not
want to be over sensitive but I want to Keep my conscience
free from the slightest rebuke. I want so to live during
1921 – should He tarry – that my life may glorify my blessed
Jesus. May the smallest sin be put away at once.
I do want to be an intercessor for Him.
My health is fine. My hearing probably worse. I
want Him to teach me how to trust Him for health of mind
& body as well as spirit. I want to understand His Word
as He means us to. My vision is not perfectly clear but I
have suffered less from headaches than when I wore glasses.
May He teach me just what to do.
I want more than ever to be used of God in prayer.
Our time at home this year has been so irregular that I
often feel little has been done & yet the Christians
have been wonderfully built up. God knows. Lord use me this
year throughout all.
