[Poem, on clipping]

A NEW LEAF.

He came to my desk with a quivering lip,

The lesson was done -

Dear teacher, I want a new leaf,” he said,

I have spoiled this one.”

In place of the leaf so stained and blotted,

I gave him a new one, all unspotted,

And into his sad eyes smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

I went to the throne with a quivering soul,

The old year was gone -

Dear Father, hast Thou a new leaf for me?

I have spoiled this one.”

He took the old leaf, stained and blotted,

And gave me a new one, all unspotted,

And into my sad heart smiled -

Do better now, my child.”

[Additional poem, on clipping]

THE GLORY OF PRESSURE.

Pressed out of Measure.” --2 Cor. 1.8.

Pressed out of measure and pressed to all length;

Pressed so intensely it seems beyond strength;

Pressed in the body and pressed in the soul,

Pressed in the mind till the dark surges roll.

Pressure by foes, and pressure from friends,

Pressure on pressure, till life nearly ends.

Pressed into knowing no helper but God;

Pressed into loving the staff and the rod;

Pressed into liberty where nothing clings;

Pressed into faith for impossible things.

Pressed into living a life in the Lord,

Pressed into living a Christ-life outpoured.

Thur. Jan. 1

I did not read the Bible thro as I expected to do. We got home ab't 4 P.M. A good way to celebrate for we were indeed happy to get here. Stopt at Rainbows but didn't bring kitty as she ran away & they hadn't found her. Lots of letters, got soaked in rain on way from Narok.

Fri. Jan. 2

Gacoka washed. Busy getting straight. Had long hunt for gun license. M. took check to Boma to cash & look for kitty. Rats are terrible. Gacoka had saved 54 eggs. Nice to have so many. Arches are very painful but am wearing supports. Hope will soon be OK. Think I'll try again to read Bible thro.

Sat. Jan. 3

Baked small amount of bread. cake & shortcake. Got 24 lbs. beef. Trying to salt some to take to Conf. Got 5 eggs today. Rained quite hard again & is thundering now. Mulungit returned but didn't find kitty brot another tiny Kitten, gray & white, not Persian. Washed hair.

Sun. Jan. 4

Quiet restful day. Had S.S. most all women & children were out. Read this P.M. almost finished Genesis. Took short walk. Evening service as usual. Put the beef into the brine. Hope 'twill get alright.

Mon. Jan. 5

Gacoka washed small wash. Mostly bedding. Rainbows sent their cat, Redwing, the jumper- because the store house is alive with rats. Begun native school work & R & C. also – just Bible- Arith- Reading. Mended tents this P.M. R. made lid for bread pan. Spent an hour in store house together this P.M. in interest of Conf.

Tues. Jan. 6

Mulungit's man came from Boma & brot some home mail. Parcel from father & Aunt Lorene. A stray donkey was caught by lions above our garden. Tagi quickly made a trap over it & set the gun. Went off ab't 5:30 shot a ½ grown cub. Abt 7 shot another. Abt. 9 another shot but twas hyena & then a dog. Rather exciting.

Wed. Jan. 7

Hoped to get more lions but didn't. Got another big mail. Lots of letters & 2 parcels from mama. Sweater in one & red kerchiefs in both. Jno working in woods. Has big place ready to plant.

Thur. Jan. 8

Had prayer m't'g tonight. School as usual. Rainbows will come for dinner on Sun. Got another check & a draft for £4.+ from father. The 2nd lion cub skin was not dry so left out & put canvas & stones on it.

Fri. Jan. 9

Just at daylight this morn. we heard a hyena at the skin. He had torn the canvas all off & eaten most of the Skin. Too bad. so sorry for it was the nicer skin. Jno took the other skin down. Had it tacked on wall of store house.

Sat. Jan. 10

Did up work by 11 all but bread which Gacoka did, & went up to see ab't getting water from river & had dinner. Cut hair when we got home. Some of the beef spoiled but some is good. More packages & letters & papers, wrist watch case from Aunt A. & more kerchiefs. Packet of tablets for writing.

Sun. Jan. 11

R's came early. Had a good visit. They left ab't 5. Claudons toes are very swelled & feverish. Have had him soak in hot water & now put cold fomentations on. He has some fever. Jno spoke so good at service this eve on “Righteousness of God” Rom. 3.

Mon. Jan. 12

Kept Claudon on bed all day & used cold fomentations. Gacoka washed. An old Masai came at noon saying his donkey has fallen into the river & was drowning. Tagi & others hurried down but it was dead. They are using it to bait a lion trap. Helpful hour this P.M.

Tues. Jan. 13

Kept C. in til P.M. While resting Mr. Salmon called. Is camped here tonight. Had tea & supper with us. Seems real pleasant. Was pleased with what we're trying to do. To bed right after supper. No guest P.M.

Wed. Jan. 14

Camp left early. Small mail. Letter from Mrs Woodley says all guests will eat at White School during Conference. Mrs D. said nothing in her letter ab't it. Lion got Indian's ox near here. Mrs R. said Claudon & R. should come tomorrow or next day. Mr R. goes to Nairobi Sat. lawsuit.

Sun. Jan. 25

Got in to Q. just in time to see the Kjb. wagons leave. Mr. S. didn't get in til noon & had asked us to lunch which wasn't ready til 2 or so. C's feet pretty sore but guess we'll try to get to Kjb. tomorrow. Had tea with Mr. S. then got things ready & to bed by 8:30.

July has been a great month in more ways than one. Our great privilege has been in getting around to so many stations & seeing so much work. Then too we realize as never before how God is uniting us on the question of the big need for all is in-filling of Holy Spirit.

Sun. Aug. 8

Cold wind. Company all came. We were 10 in all at dinner. All left about 4:45. God has been dealing very definitely with me the last few days. Read “Dynamic of Faith” & realize where I've failed in the past. Now I know the Holy Spirit is in my heart and when temptations come I simply turn to Him for deliverance. And He has wonderfully delivered even today. & yesterday. I do thank God for what He does day by day.

Fri. Dec. 31

Again the last of the year. How fast these spaces fill up. Watch night tonight at Woodleys. Got Sat. work pretty well done up. Mrs. Gabbott John & I are off for watch night. (See back)

[from back] Again it is time to close a years record, & again I can but say “Hitherto hath the Lord helpt us.”

Somehow I can't realize that the old year is closed..... Watch night program at Woodleys. 9 oclock.. refreshments. Then sacred concert- all songs were fine. Jno read Rev. 21-22. Mr. Woodley read Jno 14 & a small pamphlet. Then asked each one to tell where born & where born again & any interesting incident. Those there were:

Mrs Myers – Pa.                         Mr. Bailey – Ohio

Miss McKinstry – Mich              Mrs. Bailey – Tenn.

Dr. Blakeslee – Pa.                     Dr Davis – New Jersey

Miss Cable – Conn.                    Mrs Davis – New York

I – Illinois                                   Mrs Kendall – Cal.

Mrs Propst – Pa.                        Mr. Kendall – N. Mex.

Mr & Mrs Woodley – Ohio         John – Wis.

Then as it neared midnight we bowed in prayer. Several prayed. & we joined hands & sang “Blest be the Tie” then came home. 'Twas all very pleasant.

In many ways this has been a wonderful year. Some of the experiences have been very new & blessed & I do pray God to lead us on & on to know just how to trust Him more.

He has shown us many mistakes & hindrances & has helpt to remove them. Has shown us the awfulness of “an evil heart of unbelief” and also how to be free from it & to trust Him in the most difficult places. I do not want to be over sensitive but I want to Keep my conscience free from the slightest rebuke. I want so to live during 1921 – should He tarry – that my life may glorify my blessed Jesus. May the smallest sin be put away at once. I do want to be an intercessor for Him.

My health is fine. My hearing probably worse. I want Him to teach me how to trust Him for health of mind & body as well as spirit. I want to understand His Word as He means us to. My vision is not perfectly clear but I have suffered less from headaches than when I wore glasses. May He teach me just what to do.

I want more than ever to be used of God in prayer. Our time at home this year has been so irregular that I often feel little has been done & yet the Christians have been wonderfully built up. God knows. Lord use me this year throughout all.
