Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary – 1922.                                                                                Index

[From inside front cover.]

All my life's plan in His molding
       Not one single choice be mine.
       Let me answer, unrepining,
       “Father, not my will, but thine”.

James 4:14

“Beneath the moonlight and the snow
        Lies dead my latest year;
       The winter winds are wailing low

        Its dirges in my ear.
       I grieve not with the moaning wind,

        As though a loss befell;
       Before me, even as behind,

        God is, and all is well.”
                             - Whittier.

I can help you thro' the conflict,

I on your behalf have prayed;

Given My very life to save you -

It is I, be not afraid.”

Rained this eve. No word from Jno but the children's letters say Mrs. Leasure was very ill & was taken to Nairobi & there had been no meeting then yet tho Mr. J- & Mr. McK- had come. At that rate no telling when Jno will get back & I might as well settle to it. Wrote more letters.

A very disappointing month in some ways. Such a lot of terrible testings & so often failure but thank God there were victories too. We do hope Jno will be back by next Sat. night.

[Sept. 30, 1922 from “Memoranda” at back of book.] At the close of Sept. I have written “Disappointing month”. The disappointment is principally in myself in that I have not lived above my disappointments and testings. Terrible thots have at times driven me to almost despair that there was any victory for me. The nights have been the hardest times. The dark seemed to be full of suspicion & selfishness and jealousy. Two nights were especially hard. How my mind imagines tings that when I get to work when daylight comes, I know can't be true. I hope I may never tell or try to tell the suffering of those times. I am sure I shall never need to experience the real thing.

Now we are looking for him to come back in another week then many things will be explained. and I hope we can have a few weeks by ourselves.

I hope I have learned my lesson with this experience. I know Rom. 8:28 is true.

God nothing does nor suffers to be done

But we would do the same could we but see

Thro all the events of things as well as He.”

Sun. Oct. 1

Tues. Oct. 3

After talking things over we decided to send the mule so got Muragi off with Ned this morning. Hope they are at Quarantine tonight. Look at end of book for eventful happening.

Wed. Oct. 4

[From end of book, Oct. 4.] Yesterday there was some excitement in camp. Raymond came in in P.M. & said a leopard caught a sheep up in the woods. He wanted to make a gun trap. So they went up & set the trap & had hardly started back when the gun went off. They went back thinking something had slipt but there was the leopard a bit to one side badly wounded. They had no gun but one of the men went at it with a banga but it made off a ways. So they reset the trap & came on. I think I never saw Claudon so excited. He was quite pale. This morning Mr. Gabbott went up with them. Nothing had been at the trap but the wounded leopard lay in the long grass not far off. It raised its head & growled & Raymond shot it with buck shot. Mr. G. then shot it some more & they brot it down here & skinned it. They were excited. and it will be remembered all their lives I suppose. Mr.Gabbott has been very nice about going with the boys out shooting & I don't worry when he is with them.

Mr. G. went with boys to see if anything got into the trap but nothing had & they got the leopard as described for yesterday. Expected another letter from Jno but none came. Boys are getting on fine with the walk.

Made a trap & watched ab't ½ hr. & a lioness came & got in. They were back here a bit after 8 with skin & skull. Mrs. K & I staid here looking at pictures til they came.

Wed. Dec. 27

Got off in good time. Stopt at the dukas a bit. Ate lunch at the Morendot river. A beautiful place. Then drove on much of the time out of sight of the Lake because of papyrus & then because of hills we had to get by. Have a pretty nice camp tonight but no beach. Pretty well to the far side of the Lake.

Thur. Dec. 28

This was the day for the general picnic at Kjb. it looks much as tho it is raining over there. We had a walk back along the shore & found some rocky places where the waves splashed up. Spent abt an hour. Ate lunch at an old mill & camped tonight on a nice beach. Boys had a long swim.

Fri. Dec. 29

Boys again went in splashing before we left. A lady came down to see the natives cutting alfalfa. She said we wouldn't find any more beach. We haven't yet. Today we side tracked & visited the Gorge. A grand place for wonderful rocks. Enjoyed the scenery there. I have bad stomach tonight.

Sat. Dec. 30

Tramped about some to see if we wanted to move camp but we decided we had a pretty good place. Seems to be a regular watering place. Public property. & last nights camp was too. Don't know how we happened to hit both places, unless God directed us.

Sun. Dec. 31

Quiet day. Had a long walk this A.M. & read aloud & took walk this P.M. Jno is very enthusiastic ab't trying to get a bit of land here for a rest home. Lookt over the place again this eve at sunset & the Lake was wonderful. The last sight of the sun in 1922 was certainly grand. The glow cast on the Lake was brilliant.

There isn't so much to report for the month. Our stay at Kjb has been really pleasant so far. Some things have come up that we wish might have been avoided- purely misunderstandings I'm sure. How the devil does try to upset whatever is being done for God's glory.

[From Memoranda, Dec. 31, 1922.] The year has again come to a close and whether we like to or not we must close up our records for the year. How glad I am that “God looketh on the heart”. outwardly I fear I have accomplished very little. The pattern I've tried to weave has been very disappointing to me many times & I am glad there is forgiveness & patience with the Father.

As I go into the New Year I do pray I may learn to know Him better than ever before. I know as I study Him I will grow more like Him. Many many times during the past year I forgot my motto Unto Him and was living wholly unto myself. May He give the grace this year to follow my motto every day. To Know Him.

[From Memoranda, back of diary, written Jan. 2, 1923.] On Dec. 26 [1922] we 4 left for a trip around Lake Naivasha. We had a very full & interesting chop box. After breakfast Mrs. K said Mr. Kendall says we must settle accounts. She did most of the settling but I had to wait behind & “pay up”. I did & then overtook the rest at R.V.A. We had a lovely lunch under a tree beside the road. We had to change our camp two times. First we were in a very windy place. Then when we got settled again the pinching ants appeared and we had to go again.

Next morning somehow we lost R's little testament. I had read in it but we couldn't find it among the things at all. We got some fruit at the dukas and some mutton. Rode for two hours or more before we got to the Morendot River. where we had lunch. Twas a pretty spot & I wished for my camera, which I did 2 doz. times during the trip. It was pretty hot during the P.M. and Jno & Claudon walked some. Got off the road in one place & asked at a settlers where to find it & found we could easily join up again not far beyond so didn't miss much. Came on pretty far. A bit of lovely drive very near the Lake & at the foot of a high hill & huge acacias on all sides. Many Kikuyu gardens all along the Lake shore behind the papyrus. Camped on a grassy hill side. Had to wade thro swamp to get water. Signs of hippos around. Put up the tent & let Kibosha sleep under the wagon.

Took a stroll back along the shore before we left next (Thurs.) morning & found some rocky beach but too deep & rocky to go swimming. About the first thing we did was to get off the right road. From camp we had seen a house on the top of a hill not very far away and soon we saw we were getting near it but we thot the road must pass it. Getting to the foot of it was about the loveliest drive we had. Among immense acacia trees all clean & park like below them.

When we got near the hill & passed it a bit the road was not so distinct & a boy came to tell us we were off our road. We drove quite a ways back before we discovered the other road. We went on & again came to 2 roads & took the one nearest the Lake and again were wrong but after getting directions from a settler, we went on & joined up with the right road. Had lunch at a mill – no longer used. 3 sail boats were in a building lying idle & decaying.

From here saw a bit that looked like beach but the road did not lead near by there so didn't really see. Lots of gardens here & several settlers places in view. Very pretty place for papyrus & trees almost cut off that part of the Lake. As we went on we past one place that is not used any more. Next place was alive with poultry etc and just after passing that we came to some fairly nice sandy beach. rather hidden behind bushes & papyrus- but being sort of public watering place we stopt & what fun the boys had going in swimming.

Rested fairly well & next morning before we left the children went in again. While they were in a lady came riding down horse back to oversee some workmen. Asked us up to tea but I did not accept as we wanted to get on. We went only a short way when we saw the opening to the Gorge. So we drove over.

Very hard going for the soil is loose & ashy like. Jno & I walked mostly. Drove down the Gorge a bit then unhitched & we walked down still further. Such rocks!!! Very high & perfectly straight up. Birds nest way up near the top. Also saw a Cleopatra's Needle. High column of rocks. Found some pretty ostrich feathers. Ate lunch of boiled sweet potatoes. Then went back to the road & on along the drive. My stomach felt very upset & miserable. Ate nothing & went to bed early. Alright next morning.

The road for a long distance was very heavy sand. Jno walked. Again we got off & came to a house very near the Lake with lovely flowers on the lawn. Here we passed huge fields of sisal. Some small some large & some just being planted. White man working with a tractor. Road got better & all rode til there seemed to be paths leading to the water. Again we struck a public watering place. We must have been providentially directed to these places. No beach here just mud & lots of water lilies. Huge acacias & pretty rocks. John is very enthusiastic about getting a bit of land here & having a rest home.

We camped at this place Sat. & Sun. and during those days we took walks out in different directions. Twas lovely. On the eve of the last day of 1922 we stood & watched the colors on the Lake caused by the sunset & it was grand. Think we shall neither one ever forget it. It was wonderful.

On Mon. morning Jan. 1 we pulled up & started for home or Kjb. The mules seemed to know it & traveled along fine. There had been much disturbance during the night by hippo & zebra & the mules were nervous. Had lunch under a big acacia beside the road & got up here by 2 P.M. We had one of the nicest trips we have ever had. Enjoyed it so much. God is good to let us all be together for such nice times. We praise Him.
