[From inside front cover.]
All
my
life's plan in His molding
Not one single choice
be mine.
Let me answer,
unrepining,
“Father, not my will,
but thine”.
James 4:14
“Beneath
the
moonlight and the snow
Lies dead my latest year;
The winter winds are
wailing low
Its dirges in my ear.
I grieve not with the
moaning wind,
As though a loss befell;
Before me, even as
behind,
God is, and all is well.”
- Whittier.
Tues. Jan. 1
Caught enuf for dinner. Little ones & all.
Nothing at all this P.M. so decided to pack up & start
back tomorrow. God has let us see the beginning of another
year. What it holds for us is alone known to Him. & at
that we may rest. I want to Abide in Him
as never before.
[From back of book:] Jan. 1 1924.
Again a years record must be closed. What has been
accomplished I praise God for. What should have been done
and has not I pray for forgiveness and grace to do better
during the year just before us. God has been very good to
us, as a family, & we do praise Him for all His
goodness.
Suppose Geo & Sophy feel specially sad at this
time in thinking of all the dear ones gone. God bless them
and make His presence all-sufficient.
We have Shaffers help for which we praise Him but
we miss Tagi many times. Such differences and selfishness
& disputes have come up among the boys. I'm sure they
would have been avoided. But Tagi wasn't able for every
thing & we know One who is- praise Him we can
come to Him at any time & he can even change the hearts
of those who make the trouble. We do pray for wisdom that we
may know just how to carry on the work aright.
Just at this opening of the New Year we want to
know how to do in all things. The last few months have been
especially disappointing to me in that there seemed to be no
convenient hour for prayer & Bible study together.
Shaffers have been here 3 mos. & we've had no time
together for prayer for the things that interest all. Sun.
P.M. service & prayerday – that's all. But no doubt we
will arrange things differently when we get to work again.
We do realize His coming is very near & we want to be up
& doing for Him.
Conf. Jan 23-30 when we expect great things from
Him.
Wed. Jan. 2
Came to Lemik. About 2 miles out saw guineas. R.
got out & went for them but got a bustard instead. Bot a

night but we got no rain. Very comfy and nice drive to here.
Finished reading “Tramp abroad” last night.

Business mtg A.M. only didn't do much business.

Jno had a long talk. Things are not clearing. How we
do want God to show us.
Tues. Jan. 29

pleased.

telegram for me. “Mama passed away Mon. night”. We looked

any better than carry out plans. O how we wonder why
we didn't go right home & what the trouble was for a
card from Aunt Lorene written Sat. said all well & Coras
had just arrived. By tomorrow night we'll know. I can't
believe it.
Wed. July 2

& that's what this one is. She lies down stairs in her

Aunt Lorene. For full details see back.
[From back of book:] Later. Aug. 1924
I haven't written much about our trip for I've kept
sort of a Journal in another book.
But I must record details of the end of our
lovely European trip.
It seemed my heart would break before I could get
home & once more see mamma. Then the excitement of
seeing so many all at once & the many questions to
answer and ask filled the first few hours of home so
full that it all seems like a dream – a dream so mixed with
joy & sorrow that nothing seems quite distinct but
mamma's face- surrounded by carnations.
This is the story of her last days as Alice told
it. The week had been spent in cleaning. Thurs. she was
washing on the back veranda & the chair tipped & she
bruised her leg a bit but that seemed all. Fri. she rested
& took cold while lying down. Sat. her cold was bad but
they were busy canning strawberries & she hulled much of
the time. Then Sun. she intended to rest late but was up
& made pancakes as usual. But her nose & eyes were
watering so she staid home from church tho she walked around
in the garden & noticed a very dark dahlia already open.
The first. Aunt Annie called & they talked.
She went to her room about 6 P.M. saying she'd read
in bed. She had taken some asperin then she sent Darwin to
get some cough drops. Al's went to church & she seemed
quiet when they came home so they went to bed. At 4 A.M.
Alice roused & said she had been dreaming & in her
dream mama had called her. Then she heard the call again
& hurried down stairs & found mama complaining that
her hands were asleep. Al rubbed & massaged them &
tho they tingled yet she had no power or strength in them.
Then she told Alice how she had been up in the night &
could scarcely get back to bed again. because she couldn't
use her hands. She must have worked a half hour before she
got back into bed.
She also told Alice she had eaten the package of
cough drops by 2 A.M. and her cold seemed much better. But
Dr. thot best to give a physic because of the cough drops.
Alice called for Aunt Annie to come & they moved her bed
into the Library where she could see them moving about. And
all day long when asked if she were suffering she said “No.
only move my hands.”
We've wondered so what her thots may have been
during the day. She seemed not to think it was serious for
she joked about things all day long. Once she said to Alice
“I guess if this dumb thing (meaning numbness) would get to
my heart it would make quick work”. And in the evening she
asked Aunt A. if she thot she'd get over it. That's all that
was said & perhaps she hardly knew how serious it was
til she was ushered into His presence, only a few hrs.
before we were to get here.
The chiro came from Annawan & gave her an
adjustment but while he worked she said she felt faint &
he left promising to be back by morning. When Al saw she was
sinking she called Dr. Petty to bring a hypodermic &
they gave her two but do what they would she slipped away.
She stopt breathing before her heart stopt. The paralysis
seemed to reach her throat before her heart. She was in His
presence & how happy for she was a very consistant
Christian. Every one loved her & the many floral pieces
showed she was highly esteemed by all. Business places sent
tributes as well as friends & relatives. Her own flowers
were beautiful & we used them. The lovely white lillies
& fever fews.
Chas, Warren, Elmer, Edward, Aaron & Fred were
pallbearers & carried her to church. It was crowded.
Flora Mayer played the organ so pretty. Some of the same
pieces that mamma has often played for others.
Again & again the question comes- Why couldn't
we have come directly home or why couldn't she have
lived just a few hours longer. We'll never know. not til we
see Him face to face & then 'twill all be clear. Now we
can trust Him for He never makes a mistake. I just feel so
disappointed when I find the things I brot for her &
many of her things for us, that I could cry all the time but
when I think how infinitely more happy she is now than we
could possibly have made her with all our gifts & love I
am content to make the most of all she has done for us &
leave our words of appreciation til we see her again.
The flowers are so beautiful. As I work among them
I think I feel her presence there so that I almost expect to
see her when I look up. We keep flowers on the graves and
try to care for them all as she would. perhaps she knows
about it all but I'm sure she is perfectly happy with Jesus
& with all her loved ones.
Alice says all spring she talked & planned
constantly on “When the girls come”. & there were extra
vegetables planted and extra fruit put up – all in
thotfulness for “the girls”. She was a wonderful mother,
& we thank God for her life & the memory of it all
now.
It pleased him to welcome her into glory before she
had the chance to welcome us home. But somehow I feel it
wont be very long til we shall meet in the air.
The funeral services were very fine. Rev Bischoff
spoke principally from Rev 21:4. Revs. Plapp from Red Oak

'Twas the organ music & the W.M.S. placing
carnations around her face that were most impressive to me.
There are so many things to do & decisions to
make as I look into the future. God knows just what is best.
& He alone is able to direct us all. Tagis going seemed
hard to understand but this still more. I want to get the
lesson from it that He means to teach me.
