[Inscription:] “A Merry Christmas to Florence, from
Lora. 1926.”
“Be not amazed at life,
‘Tis always been the mode of God,
with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfill,
In times & ways they least expect.”
From Mrs Guither
[From clippings:]
MY NEW YEAR PRAYER.
Dear Master, for this coming year
Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: “Teach me to do
The thing that pleaseth thee.”
A quiet lot in life is mine,
Made up of little things;
Teach me to do as unto thee
The duties each day brings,
Faithful in that which is the least
Dear Master, I would be,
Thus making all my daily work
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to please thee through this year
In every word I say.
Dear Master, take these lips of mine
And keep them day by day
From foolish talking, angry words,
And evil-speaking free:
Teach me, that I may ever speak
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
Not only what to do and say
Would I be daily taught;
I ask thee so to cleanse my heart
And purify each thought
That every thought and every wish
May pure and holy be.
I want in everything to be
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”

Ngong. He, Dr, wants to put a teacher there. M. has been
very sneaky about it all. Dr A. is going up Eldama Ravine
way baptizing etc in Barnetts district. Its hard to know
what he is up to but it all looks very unfair.
Mon. Jan. 23
I took P.M. prayer mtg. Canon Burns spoke this P.M.
so helpfully again. Moody students & others had mtg this

Mon. July 23
Mail came & no letter from J so expect he’ll be
in soon. Mrs D. wrote they got home all OK. Kanoku & I

Last night ab’t 11:15 Mr. Shaffer came in. I was

hadn’t my last letter telling of broken pipe. But he said it
was badly knocked to pieces & he had help all A.M. at
fixing it up & telegraphed for parts needed & hopes
they’ll come out tomorrow. Baby is quite fine again. Very
tired tonight. Ollemotion came home with fever.
Sun. July 29
Mr Shaffer took both morn. & eve. I sat over
there this eve wrote Zellers. Do hope the ram fixtures come
tomorrow. Its very trying not to have water & also see
things suffer for lack of it. Very quiet restful day. Motion
has temp again this eve tho felt fine this morn.
Mon. July 30
No John yet & altho Mr S. drove to Narok hoping

shall call it off tomorrow til we can talk things over.
OlleMotion seems better.
Such a mixed up month! And next promises to be
somewhat the same. Only I hope my widowhood will soon be
finished. Mr. S. can’t settle to much of any thing since
they are going home soon.
Wed. Aug. 1
I thot surely he’d get in today – but no. I do hope
he isn’t down with fever some place. Mulungit came to talk
things over. Can’t do much til Jno comes. Mr S. fixed sewing

He’ll fix the ram tomorrow for those things came. Ruth M.
isn’t feeling very good. Made corn cakes at womens mtg.
Fri. Aug. 3
Felt very bum all day. Called off the womens

flu but will surely be alright by morning. No sign of Jno as
yet. Ram was pumping by noon. Very thankful. Mr. C’s 2 men
helpt. Mr. C. is quite miserable. I was in bed by 7:30 last
night & will be again tonight. Mr. S. leaves in morning.
Sat. Aug. 4
Mulungit went with Mr S. They were off by 8:30. M.
said he dreamed Jno got home. but he hasn’t come yet.
Children went way down to river crossing while I was
bathing. Whipt R.M. & put her to bed & had Roy D sit
on chair til bed time. Were with herd boys. Kuyoni lost his
key boys sleep in work shop. Mr S didn’t like Parmali in
their kitchen. Broke my lower tooth.
Sun. Aug. 5
Well, who’d have thot last Sun. that I’d still be
alone. but such is life in Africa. God knows what is best.
Praise Him! We can trust. That seems all that we can do
these days. Mr. Clarke called this P.M. He is not very well
yet. Wrote Guithers. so nice to be able to water the thirsty
garden again. Shall send Kanoku for mail early tomorrow.
Kuyoni found key in another pocket. I am feeling quite well
physically.
Mon. Aug. 6
Kanoku got mail but no letter nor any other
word from Jno. The Daily Light made me think there may be a
severe trial for me “Whom He loveth He chasteneth”. I tried
to imagine the worst and hope still for the best. Can’t give
up looking for him, but am trying to leave it all with the
Lord. He knows best.
Tues. Aug. 7
Washed. all got dry. Sprinkled a bit this P.M.
& also tonight. Walked up to Kanokus after supper with

Jno is!
Wed. Aug. 8
And today he came!
Just as I was ready to go to class. Just took longer than he
thot & delayed train & lorry made him 4 days later.
Postponed class til tomorrow. Asked Clarke up for supper but
he is having guests so just came for a bit of chat.
Thur. Aug. 9
‘Tis
nice to be whole again. The Lord is good. He knows
how hard ‘twould be for me to live alone. Had class but gave
Bible lesson on leaving the things of the Masai & doing
Gods will. Mr C. sent up mutton & he came for supper.
Good fruit salad.

evening. Got quite a little knitted.
Sun. Aug. 12
Morning services & eve. Asked about when to
have language class & all wanted at 7. Course I can’t go
at that hour now. My head wants to ache. so I’ve been quiet
all day. Cold & very disagreeable.
Mon. Aug. 13
Thot Mr S. would be in - but no sign of him as yet.
Hope she isn’t worse. Mr. C left after lunch. Had a cup of
tea & pudding with us. Mulungit talked to girls class as
well as to the school about respecting their teachers.
Language class at 3 PM.

our mail & no Mr S. yet either. Am sending Kanoku early
in the morning. R.M. has nasty cough. They went with Jno on
the road. Class tonight. Jno finished letter to the boys.
Good long one.
Wed. Aug. 15
Mr. S. came in about 5. Also Harry D. She is doing
well. He expects to go for her by end of month. In class
today gave verses ab’t our bodies. Next week hope Mulungit
can come & find out who will care to go on with the
class.
Thur. Aug. 16
Had sewing class early & they finished sitting
out in the sun, when language class came. Jno hoped the
elders would be out to prayer meeting but only 3 were there.
He will try to get them together tomorrow P.M. Mulungit
isn’t here either.
Fri. Aug. 17
Prayer Day & 39 out which is a nice number for
here. Had meeting with elders this P.M. they owned that they
often cheated in their trading & would gladly stop it if
there was some other way to make money. Note from Mr. Dawson
to ask if he might come for Masai tomorrow.
Sat. Aug. 18
Mr. S. & Jno left early for Melili. They think
we must build a school there. Mr. S. wrote a note to say he
has Influenza so wont come. Baked bread. buns cookies
pudding making kabugabu jam. Children ate dinner with me.
Music tonight & I’m knitting every possible chance.
Sun. Aug. 19
Quiet day – all meetings as usual. Toonight
Mulungit brot 180 sh. toward the mill to be purchased from
Mr. Probst. Had quite a discussion this eve ab’t doing Bible
teaching at the Narok school. Mr S & I think we should
but John doesn’t care to. he thinks its forcing
ourselves onto the Gov’t.
Mon. Aug. 20
Kanoku washed. Partari is at school again these
days. Always has something good for the children. Men all at
work on the water ditch for the mill. Language class this
eve. Did some school work. Head was pretty bad before

Ironed & made ketchup & cake & cottage
pudding. Jno & Mr S worked all A.M. at the water ditch
& no one but Olduboi came & when at 11 they went to
see why they weren’t coming they found ‘em all eating mut.
So the men declared they’d not help a bit. This PM all came
to work so men went down too. Big letter from the boys. Word
from Office of $49. We are thankful for that.
Wed. Aug. 22
How well I remember a year ago!!! [Camped at Joplin
MO, leaving Raymond & Claudon with Westervelts.] At 4
P.M. Mr Probst with Mrs. P’s sister Mrs Saum from India
& 4 young Am. teachers from Egypt came in. We were
surprised. Had supper rather late. then one played violin
& others sang & then talked plans.
Thur. Aug. 23
Jno slept with Mr. Shaffer. Mrs Saum with me the 4
men in guest room & Mr. P. in east room. Mr. P. &
Mrs S. left about 9. Mr S & Jno & 4 left after 11
for 2 days camp. I sleep at S’s & we eat at our house.
Men killed a snake this eve where they are ditching. Baked
bread. they waited til brown bread was done. Wrote Chas
birthday letter.

Thot men might be back this eve but must be
enjoying stay out. Have a big program for tomorrow &
hope they don’t come in before 4. Had womens meeting. Kuyoni
took children. R.M. & R.D. both got wet feet.
Sat. Aug. 25
O me! O my! Was just ready to give children scraped
up dinner when the men came in. I am ashamed of my words
showing my disappointment. Gave them hi tea & Clarke
came while they were at it. They went there for shower bath
and tea & all here to supper & music. I am
tired but things are ready for tomorrow.
Sun. Aug. 26
Not exactly restful but not too bad. All mtgs as
usual. Asked Mr C up for 3:30 tea & meeting &
supper. They talked while we went to church. Then asked what
plans were & they haven’t decided. I’m going to bed
& they are still at it. They enjoy hearing Clarke’s many
experiences.
Mon. Aug. 27
They wanted to catch a Kijabe truck at Narok.
Shaffer bargained for Patel to take all over & bring
mill back for s. 100. Mboga brot mail & S’s note. So I
sleep with the children again. He expects to be back
tomorrow. Kanoku washed. I’m not doing much at school these
days.
Tues. Aug. 28
A truck & mill came in about 5:30 & Mrs. S
& babe & Miss Grover on it! We were surprised &
so glad to see ‘em. I cleaned up their house a bit but not
nice as I wanted to. J & I to Clarkes for supper after
getting them some. Probst took 4 up Longonot today.
Wed. Aug. 29
Mrs. S. had a slight go of temp but think its
mostly from the shake up. Baby is fine. Miss Grover has
greeted many. Nanjiru brot her some milk. Mr. Clarke up to
supper. I had 10 oclock class. Busy days a year ago.
[Florence leaving her home in Hooppole IL., probably for
last time.]
Thur. Aug. 30
Mrs. S. had hard go of fever today – up to 104.
Gave some quinine tonight. Will give more tomorrow. Had
sewing class. Kuyoni baked bread. Quite nice. Wrote Kijabe
letters. Every one working at the mill.
Fri. Aug. 31
Last day of school. Haven’t done much for them the
last 2 wks. These last days Partari has taken Bridgets
classes. Rachel is sick. Mr S. Jno & Miss Grover went to
Narok. I had womens meeting. Mrs S. had no temp. today.
Maringus baby had another convulsion spell. Miss G. went up.
Seemed alright later.
Another monthly report written. If July was an
upset & irregular mo. Aug. was more so. God has been
good. brot Jno back safely & well & gave us baby
Shaffer & given Mrs fair strength again. We thank Him
for all.
Sat. Sept. 1
Busy as usual. Made pudding etc for Shaffers too.
Had meeting tonight & a good crowd out. They seem to
feel some what the need for prayer but we hope they’ll feel
it far more as meetings go on. Jno put new doors on & we
fixed windows so twas nice & warm with good fire.
Sun.* Sept. 2
Good meetings & good crowds. About 85 this
morning. and nearly 40 this eve. Had good meeting PM too.
Read Finneys 2’nd lecture. They are so helpful & just
what we need now. There is need for real heart searching.
May God reveal Himself as never before.
Mon. Sept. 3
Washed before meeting. Parmale helpt well. We miss.
met at 9 & read another searching lecture. I want a
deeper spirit of prayer. More burden. Men
worked at mill awhile this P.M. but the big thing
these days is the meetings. Letter from Lo. Pretty good
meeting.
Tues. Sept. 4
Read only part of Chap. 4 this morning. Good number
out again. We do pray God to clean up – beginning in us. I
do feel the need of more earnestness in prayer. Jno’s
messages are always searching & to the point. Miss
Grover attends right along. Mrs. S. is up all day now.
Wed. Sept. 5
Meetings again were very good around 35 attend. A
good many children in the evenings. May God work in us too.
I wrote some at Bible verses for school but like to spend as
much time in prayer as possible. We must have
victory.
Thur. Sept. 6
Meetings continue well attended and there seems
good interest. Quite a bit of confession & prayer. We do
want a greater burden or spirit of prayer ourselves. Mr.
Clarke came home in his new Ford brot a friend, so did not
come up.
Fri. Sept. 7
There seems more confessing but there is still not
the breaking up we’d like to see- perhaps not even in
ourselves. We read a lecture every morning & they are
helpful. There is an after meeting now for those who wanted
to pray. Quite a number staid. Clarke & friend came up
for tea & to show us the new Ford.
Sat. Sept. 8
Jno did not come home til 11:30. There was much
confessing and praying. I had a searching time by myself.
Neither of us got to sleep til very late. Usual Sat. work.
Mr C. & friend here for supper but didn’t stay late. Mr.
& Mrs S. came over. Mr C. sent our phono up so had
music.
Sun. Sept. 9
Meetings as usual. I had womens meeting at 2. They
are quite stirred up too. Had to leave before all thro
because of Eng mtg. Rained pretty hard tonight. The bell
rung & they seem to be having mtg but we didn’t go over.
I wrote the boys. Pretty full day for me but happy. S’s ate
here.
Mon. Sept. 10
Washed & ironed. When thro with our prayer
meeting at 10 Mulungit walked in. Got back yesterday.
Meetings again AM & this eve. Mill is turning now.
Albert has been in glory for 2 yrs. How well I remember a
year ago. [At “Official Roosevelt Camp” nearing New York,
headed for Africa.]
Tues. Sept. 11
Meetings as usual. Mondet & Milaun talk &
pray every chance. I fear there’s a good deal of
show in it but don’t want to criticize. Started letter to
Lo. Made Nolmisheni dress from white cal. apron.
Wed. Sept. 12
Bridget didn’t bring milk but came & said
Nanjiru had had bad words. Nanjiru was at mtg & came
here afterward. owned up her heart is bad but Bridgets is
too. Had quite a long talk with Bridget this P.M. She seems
to want to make things right but she may find it hard to do.
Thur. Sept. 13
Very good crowd out both A.M. & eve. Nanjiru
seems to be waking up a bit & I hope really wants her
heart changed tho she hasn’t said so. Bridget has been out
to both mtgs but don’t know how much she is trying to make
right.
Fri. Sept. 14
Meetings A.M. & eve as usual. Interest may be
flagging a bit but there is no lack of prayer or Bible
reading. Planning to go fishing tomorrow so mixed bread
tonight. Wrote at Lo’s letter.
Sat. Sept. 15
All went fishing. Kuyoni finished baking my bread.
Had a pleasant day. but rather tiresome. Had some music
tonight. Got a nice bit of knitting doe. Didn’t catch many
fish but used a net & got some alive & put into our
mill stream.
Sun. Sept. 16
Meetings as usual. I had women this P.M. too which
made 5 meetings for me. Too much for every Sun. but this is
special. Young men got up- one after another &
testified. & then stood up & sung. Rather a good
deal of swank ab’t it all. Bridget went to Kraals.
Mon. Sept. 17
Good letter from boys. Chas. & Herman got there
on R’s birthday. Not many out this A.M. & none of the
young fellows this eve. They are having their own meeting-
they resent the way the elders oppose them. I think some are
too forward & like to show off. Washed, ironed &
mended. Cleaned curtains & put them up again. The mill
is grinding. They thot they’d have to move it but shortening
pipe gives more power.
Tues. Sept. 18
Miss Grover said this morn she heard singing most
all night. Milaun & Wambogo were at meeting all day
& both spoke this morning W. saying they did wrong in
doing things as they had. But others haven’t been out. There
is some thing wrong some place. Very dead tonight. Hot this
P.M. & threatened rain. Ate supper at the mill.
Wed. Sept. 19
Elders seem to be “up against” it. The young men
are fairly quiet. Tonight we staid til after 10 for we felt
there was a deep spirit of prayer. and we hoped things would
break up but none confessed. Jno spoke so urgently on the
Laodicean church. Mulungit seems stubborn ab’t something.
Thur. Sept. 20
All mtgs as usual. Searching. pointed talks by
John. Sitoya was back this eve & made fire. Njoroge
& Nareyu were married shenzi style. We are all very
disappointed. Were to have civil ceremony at D.C. office.
Parmale says it was very bad.
Fri. Sept. 21
Talked with M. this P.M. Thot wedding yesterday has
made it hard for him for Maringu and Matiu said it was
alright & went & elders said no & didn’t
go. He is very troubled ab’t many things. I hope he
gets all cleared up. John still preaches very searching
sermons. J. worked at ram.
Sat. Sept. 22
Baked & cleaned. Abt 2:30 went to Narok with
supper all in the car – 11 of us – with the 2 helpers. Drove
to school. Mr. Roach was not there. Its a nice place &
will be fine when finished. Music this eve. Christians want
mtg tomorrow P.M.
Sun. Sept. 23
Meetings as usual and also the Christians mtg this
P.M. We spoke of having communion but decided we better
wait- & its well we did for they said they wouldn’t have
taken it anyway. The men have ab’t decided to go to Kjb
tomorrow. Mr S went for mail but didn’t find the clerk.
Mon. Sept. 24
Yes, the men got off ab’t 12. Very heavily loaded.
Mail came about 2. Letter from Mrs Probst to say she’d take
Harry D. The paper says Prince doesn’t arrive in Nairobi til
Mon! The men intended coming back Fri. We’ll likely hear
from them.
Tues. Sept. 25

by themselves evenings. Can’t seem to get much done. Washed
& ironed yesterday. Worked at tying up tomatoes today.

planting ger. by store house.
Thur. Sept. 27
Sure enuf letter from Mr S. to say they are rather
expecting to stay til next week. Perhaps hold mtgs at Ngong.
til then. He says J. is driving the Ford & will bring it
home here. Seein’ is believin’.
Wrote Al tonight. Head was horrid at supper time but better
now. Tries hard to rain but can’t make it.
Fri. Sept. 28
Fixed the clock. Meetings as usual. Copied at
“Story of life of Christ”. Parmale dug potatoes from my
flower bed such huge ones. Miss G. had written for passage
on mail lorry tomorrow but will stay now til next week.
Sat. Sept. 29
Fixed Oldubois sewing machine. Baked & cleaned
as usual. Thro by noon & cleaned up this P.M. & made
some copies of writing for school. Glad I don’t feel
like I did a year ago. [seasick] Typed long tonight. Have
only 2 pages left. Used up most all the flour we
have. Can’t bake again til men come.
Sun. Sept. 30
Lonely without John. Wrote Mrs Westervelt. Mulungit
took A.M. meeting. Women called this P.M. to tell me Bridget
slept at Wambogas house! What next. She came for medicine
while they were here and later again. We are all troubled.
I’d rather W. didn’t teach but Mulungit says its alright.
When we began meetings Sept. 1 we didn’t think
they’d keep up all month but they have & a lot has been
done. The Lord has cleaned up some but we wonder what this
new trouble means. Miss Grover has spent the month here
& we’ve been glad for her prayer help.
Mon. Oct. 1
School began. My heart was so heavy
last night & til today when I had a talk with Bridget
who told me the trouble between her & Wambogo was 4 yrs
ago before she was married. She made it right at once but W.
only now & so the people here only know ab’t it now.
I’m sure she’s right. My I am glad. Men are at Nairobi
tonight. Go to Kjb. tomorrow. I’m glad I’m not the Prince of
Wales tonight. Sitoya teaches.
Tues. Oct. 2
Washed. Bridget helpt. But my heart is again heavy
for Elisa told me Bridget lied to me. So I asked Wambogo
& he says it is true. Twas the week he was sick. And he
confessed at mtg. Now what about Bridget!? I just don’t know
what to say. I hope she comes to me. Ironed this P.M.
Quite a nice rain.
Wed. Oct. 3
Bridget didn’t say a thing & I didn’t either.
Fixed shoe bag for Johns door. Dr. Cole called this eve to
see if I’d teach his head man. He is a Masai and I think
I’ll enjoy it but we will have to see what time he can have
off. We went to Clarkes & looked around a bit. Dr. Cole
is off soon for England.
Thur. Oct. 4
Had sewing class. 7 were there. Bridget acts
nervous & unnatural. she said nothing to me & I
didn’t. Walked up to Mulungits after supper. Wrote Mrs.
C.E.H. If the men don’t come in tomorrow I’ll have a holiday
on Sat. for we have no flour to bake with. Motion brot mail.
Letter from boys.
Fri. Oct. 5
Men got in just after 8. Brot a Ford truck sold at
auction very cheap. They are very dirty & very tired.
Brot a boy to drive. Dad wouldn’t undertake it. Talked to
Bridget. She says she has confessed to God & that’s
enuf. No argument will make her see it. The Spirit only must
work. Had prayer mtg this P.M. 9 women.
Sat. Oct. 6
Did some baking but not much. Miss Grover left. Had
planned to even tho the men hadn’t come. Worked at accounts
tonight & music. Do remember a year ago so well. [With
Barnetts in London.] Unpacked things. Have a lot of very
dirty wash. Nice to have flour & sugar on hand.
Sun. Oct. 7
Threatened with headache all day but better now.
Read in Finney again. Mr. S. & load of boys went up on
plain. Bridget confessed to her sin tonight. I hope it was
really from her heart & not because she had to. Meetings
this week at night. Wrote the boys.
Mon. Oct. 8
I washed some & Parmale finished. Many dirty
safari things. School as usual. John worked up on the road.
Brot in the first ripe tomatoes of the giants. Birds are
getting them. Telegram from Mr Room to know if his son is
here.
Tues. Oct. 9
And tonight his son is here. Got in about 4 P.M.
Has had a bad go of fever so is in no hurry to go hunting.
Mr. S. has telegraphed to Probst for his gun. Dr Coles man
& Motion came to see about school work. May come nights.
Wed. Oct. 10
Dr. C’s man came this P.M. to say he’d try to come
in A.M. class. I tried him this P.M. in English but he knows
nothing of English tho he reads Swahili. Mr. Roome has pain
in chest. Mr. S. got 2 dik dik. shot at a bush buck. Lunch
below falls.
Thur. Oct. 11
Dr C’s man Kerigo, was ready at 9 A.M. & as I
had the chicken on by that time & could get away I ran
over. He’ll learn, I guess but he doesn’t know much now.
Sewing class this P.M. I was tempted to get cross &
impatient this morning when there was so much to do. I don’t
think I spoke hastily but my thots weren’t comfortable.
Fri. Oct. 12
2 wks. finished. We must get at Xmas memorizing.
Mr. Roome got a long telegram from his father to say he was
to meet him in Nairobi a week from tomorrow. Mr. Roome Sr.
is on his way home. Jr. fears his mother is worse. Got
baking pretty well under way for a good plunge
tomorrow.
Sat. Oct. 13
Got baking out of the way this A.M. and after rest
& bath we all piled into the Ford truck & went to
Narok for picnic supper but it rained so hard we had to stay
in the truck all the time. Got back here & found it dry.
hadn’t rained a drop. Shot a jackal – silver kind. Mr Roome
seemed to enjoy it. also music tonight.
Sun. Oct. 14
Meetings all as usual. I seemed to have it in for
Mr. S. all day. He gave gun powder to Kemanisho & I took
it away for I knew she wanted it for marking the body. He
fixt the ram instead of coming to church & then
suggested a picnic to Ollolunga & I said some not nice
things for which I had to apologise. My head has been bad
all day but thats no reason my heart should be.
Mon. Oct. 15
Washed. Mr Roome received letter from his father
saying they were both sailing the 27th. So he
wont be back. Now they plan to go to Salt swamp just for a
night- he & Mr. S. hoping to get a lion. Kerigo came for
school but none of the herd boys, nor the teachers. Gas lamp
wont work.
Tues. Oct. 16
Ironed. Cooked artichokes we got at Clarkes last
night. Very good. The men got off by 8:30. Very bad head
A.M. & P.M. One of those sort of dazed times but not so
bad that I couldn’t do school work. I’m going to sleep at
Mrs S’s tonight. Wrote Miss Kolachny.
Wed. Oct. 17
Dr Coles boy came to school this A.M. so have
nothing tonight. Wrote Aunt Annie but not finished. Men must
be having good time for they haven’t returned. so I sleep at

P.M. I was up by 4:10 and got Parmale out. We had breakfast
by 5:10 & they were ready to leave by 6 only the monkey
refused to be caught. Mr. R. was upset about something for
he acted very strange & never said goodby to John. A
telegram came to say Mr. R. Sr. would get into Nairobi by 2
P.M. train.
Sat. Oct. 20
Baked & got thro by 10:30 & took lunch up
on the road & tea for helpers. John didn’t come back til
5:30 said they got a lot done. Wonder when Mr. Roomes found
each other & if Mr. S. got thro with all he wanted to
do. I made a good lot of marmalade. The last for this
season, I think.
Sun.* Oct. 21
Quiet day. all services as usual. Not feeling well-
but kept agoing. Started a letter to Lo & Co. Motion
brot mail. Letters from Aunt Lorene, Lo, Mr. Norum, etc. All
good. Aunt Lorene wrote of Mrs. Felhmans death on Aug. 12.
Mon. Oct. 22
Had a very uncomfortable night and have head ache

Thur. Oct. 25
Rained pretty hard this P.M. & eve so Jno
didn’t go to prayer mtg tho the bell rang at 8 oclock. No
sewing class. Shaffers are sleeping in the car to try it
out. They hope to get away on Sat.
Fri. Oct. 26
Fourth week of school closes today- 1/3 the term
gone. It does go fast. Trying to get mill started but has no
roof yet. Mulungit has much trouble trying to get blacks

to Narok and back. Says its play compared to the Overland.

any more. Church must help. I’ve told the boys if they can’t
come & help I’ll not teach at 10 A.M.
Wed. Oct. 31
End of the month again. Mr. C. got some new records
so came up to supper & brot ‘em up. Ndirangu didn’t come
to school but Milaun did. When I asked if he wasn’t going to
work he said he had to think ab’t it. It makes me very cross
at them. Records weren’t very good. I had class with Kerigo.
The month has gone so fast. One can’t see
that the condition of hearts has been greatly improved even
with all the meetings. It’s very hard for me to be nice to
Milaun. Almost a year in the country! Whats been done.
Thur. Nov. 1
This morning Wambogo & Ndirangu went to Kijabe.
Mondet teaches in Wambogo’s place. Milaun was not in school.
I almost wish he’d not come any more. He doesn’t get
fractions at all. Its hard to be patient. Mail tonight brot

this is his answer.
Tues. Nov. 6 Election Day.
Baked a corn bread while ironing. Sent one down to
C. & Jno & Mr S. were to have tea too but some one

too fast. Jno says so. Wrote Mrs W. tonight. Jno not feeling
well & my head is not comfortable either. Boys left ab’t

Kerigo came. Jno at ram. Mr. C. left on safari. Was here to
lunch. Mr. S. took him to Ngiro. Put cement dam in to make
basin for water for ram.
Sat. Nov. 10

some tonight. Takes a good deal of power tho.
Went to bed with bad head last night and have not
done any thing all day except finish Guithers
letter, & that was hard work. Rained hard this P.M.
Motion went down the hill too fast & broke his axle this
morning.
Thur. Nov. 15
Still rather bum but went to school. Not many came
of my class for they thot I meant no school til Mon. Wish I
had said that. Men went to prayermtg.
Fri. Nov. 16
Prayer day. Shaffers came over this P.M. and we had
a little service. This eve she came to play & did &
then we talked about everything til 11:30 principally his
work, what it hasn’t been etc. He’s busy these days working
at cars & setting up the saw.
Sat. Nov. 17
Thro baking in good time bathed before dinner. It
rained pretty hard so John came up from road all dirty &
wet – so had tea right away & then cleaned up. Will make
stew & dumplings tomorrow night.
Sun. Nov. 18
Mr. S. went to Narok this A.M. Services as usual. I
read a chapter from Murrays book on “humility”. Very

at mill. It’s about finished. They can run it now. Jno thot
Mr C asked us to supper but wasn’t sure but he sent word up

Wed. Nov. 21
Men tried to go up the ridge road but came back
this PM as it was so showery. I wrote Pris. L. and Arthur
Spaths. Letter from Lo. saying she’s going to take a trip-
one of the Med. cruises. Will stop at Cairo but thats as

far as possible & work on up. hoping to get back Sat.
Mrs. S. is staying alone – if she is too nervous I’ll go
over another night.
Fri. Nov. 23
Was in school almost all A.M. Had women P.M. &
Kerigo came tonight so have had quite a busy day of it. Mrs.
S. got on alright last night. Suppose men will be in
tomorrow.
Sat. Nov. 24
Baked & all thro & bathed when men came
about 4. Had asked Clarke up for supper & Shaffers
afterward. C. went to Narok & got back late but had a
pleasant evening any way.
Sun. Nov. 25
The men wanted us all to go up this week for
meetings but Mr. S. has ordered oxen & meetings &
road making can’t well both be done. So we may go up next
week. Mr. C here to lunch & Watermelon. Good too.

Mr S came down to take her to Narok in morning but went back
again. I sleep with children.
Wed. Nov. 28
When the children went to gardens boys didn’t see
that the door was shut & calves got in & ate my
Masai Testament & two song translations, all my months
report & quite a no. pages of the book so I’ve taken
another & will take a shilling from each of the boys

class tonight. Mixed bread. Posted boys letters. Took Jnos
picture with wonder berry stalk. Only 3 more weeks of school
– but we seem only well begun.
Contrary to last year this has not been a very
eventful month- just the usual- only that Mrs. S. is away.
School has jogged on. I get impatient when I see what wages
the teachers get & how poorly they do their work. Too
ignorant to do better.
Sat. Dec. 1
Mr. S. was down by noon. Baked & cleaned as
usual. Jno working in the garden all day. Showers this P.M.
but they just dampen the surface. Getting things together to

don’t know why.
Sat. Dec. 8
Did usual baking & cleaning. Kuyoni went to
Narok so S’s ate dinner here. Expected Major Dawson to tea
but didn’t come. Mr. C. is quite miserable. Wanted to come
up to tea if Dawson came.

down most all day. Skipt all meetings and all meals. Jno ate

the Dr. ab’t coming to tea.
Tues. Dec. 11
Ironed & had my class. Partari went to Narok.
Went to C’s this eve to see Mrs. Paterson & we talked
about Xmas. They may come over some day before. She seems
very nice & the little 3 yr. old Angus is a nice boy. S
over & spent the eve talking.
Wed. Dec. 12
Gardens work & I gave the boys work at home so
I’m not over there much. I knitted quite a bit. First sleeve
well on the way. Jno at the road over the bridge of little
stream.
Thur. Dec. 13
Everything as usual. Jno & Mulungit were to go
up to Olmurua tomorrow to settle where to put the school but
a deputation is here tonight so it looks like there might be
trouble about it. Lobo & others called to see ram.
Fri. Dec. 14
Shauri folks came to see Jno & say they didn’t
want the school. We asked ab’t tent meetings & they said
alright. M. & elders here are determined on the school
tho. We are disappointed but do not think its best to force
them now.

C’s birthday. Got pretty nice. Expected Dawson early to see
gardens & tea. Didn’t come tho. Mr. S. got off by 8.

good. Wonder how he [Claudon- 18th birthday]
feels by this time & whether he’s having a cake. Partari
reported on houses. Many of them very bad. Hope some will
take it to heart. And now [John, found new road to Shaffer’s
house this date previous year.] he’s working on this end of
another road up here.
Mon. Dec. 17
And now that road [John’s new road previous year]
is used daily. He is working now at one to come up here.
Kanoku washed. Children are no trouble. I went to school
some. but Partari has a good deal of the time – working
outside around building. Mr. C. up for supper but miserable.
Came home from Narok today.
Tues. Dec. 18
Finally got the mail. Looks like licenses for cars
may be put down to £1 and gas taxed a bit. At that rate it
looks more hopeful for us to get the little Ford. Wrote Lo
again. Clarke up for supper but ate only soup.
Wed. Dec. 19
Shaffers came in at 1 P.M. All seem fine. Baby has
grown. They brot almost every thing I ordered. Mrs. S. has a
bad head tonight. Letter from Mrs. Davis. Jno is digging
down the road which is to come up here. Thus getting stone
for garage.
Thur. Dec. 20
Expected to do big work in school but they still
had a lot of outside work to do. Advanced class met for
Arith. & song. Gave Wambogo the program. Not very long.
Clarkes Rigoletto records came so Jno got Soibi to take
prayermtg & we went down. I protested tho.
Fri. Dec. 21
Prayer Day – Meeting at 10. Men went out to Ngiro
plains to see if they can get an eland, or something else.
We ask Major Dawson to Xmas dinner but he replied he &
Mr Roach expect to go to the Mara fishing. We haven’t found
a sheep yet. Mbali says he sent out for one.
Sat. Dec. 22
Men got back ab’t dark. Mr. C. came up to supper.
They brot a Tommy- saw lions but missed. & saw no eland.
Every body tired. Mr C didn’t stay long as he is not feeling
well at all. Wonder If Al baked herself a cake. I made mince
meat.
Sun. Dec. 23
Meetings as usual. Shaffers ate here. All went for
walk. Jno found tree for Xmas. Clarke is furnishing beef for
Xmas dinner. We have no sheep yet.
Mon. Dec. 24
Jno got tree & Mrs S. decorated it & drew
on b. board. We washed & baked mince pies & made
lemon curd tarts. Gashisha brot parcels & letters from
San B. We opened after program which went off alright. Gave
cones of sugared popcorn about 65.
Tues. Dec. 25
I intended going to early mtg but they got at it
too late. Young folks were up all night. Mrs
S decorated veranda & dining room very pretty. Got
school table. Sent for meat as Mr C didn’t send it up. They
came abt 1 so it was 1:30 before we ate for we past presents
first. Then went to races but too late then to C’s for
supper by bon fire (at back of book).
Christmas day. [From back of book.] Guests were:
Dr. Patterson & wife & 3 yr old Angus. Their guests
Mr & Mrs. Braithwaite, Donald 8 & Allen 4. Mr.
Clarke took pictures before going to C’s. Had “Rigoletto”
til ab’t 7:30 then went out to fire & had sandwiches-
tarts- candy- & bananas given us by the school. Pleasant
time til 9. Dr Patterson was pretty well all in before the
eve was over.
It has been an uneventful year in most part. John
would disagree to that statement for he considers climbing
Kilimanjaro a great event- & so it was but I don’t
suppose we will hear of it in eternity.
Got tables exchanged before breakfast. Decorations
all down & now we look like we never had had Xmas. Had
first meeting at 10 AM and another this eve. Motion went to
Nairobi took several along & they aren’t back yet.
Thur. Dec. 27
Mr C. up to supper & brot mail. Letter from
Barnetts saying they will be along Mon. or Tues. Meetings
again. Quite well attended. I called Milaun down for not
cleaning school but he doesn’t seem to care. Will clean it
Sat. if he doesn’t.
Fri. Dec. 28
Meetings as usual. John at Clarkes this P.M. doing
pictures. I partly cut out the dress from Mabel Z. last
Xmas. Takes long to study it all out. Tried to rain but
didn’t amount to much. To C’s for tea & Xmas cake.
Sat. Dec. 29
Baked some tho the flour only came when Mr. S. got
here ab’t 11 A.M. I had yeast agoing so soon had bread on
the way. all baked by 3. To Clarkes for supper. Major Dawson
came for language. Had most of “Rigoletto” after supper.
Sun. Dec. 30
Meetings as usual. At Shaffers for supper. took
walk after. Suppose Barnetts will be here next Sun. Jno
spoke so searchingly this A.M. I do hope they will soon
begin to wake up.
Mon. Dec. 31
Washed before meeting & got bread agoing.
Ironed this P.M. and baked bread. Mr C. asked us down for
tripe supper at 6. Shaffers went down for pictures. Meeting
tonight. Jno gives good talks but gets little response.
Our attempt at the first outschool was not very
successful. & we hardly know what to try next along that
line. Mulungit is determined it shall be done &
has gone to see ab’t it but hasn’t reported what he found.
God knows we have tried to be faithful in teaching
& preaching but it is most discouraging sometimes for
most seem so indifferent. The school work has been quite
gratifying and work around the place has gone on too.
Several roads have been made. The mill is in but doesn’t
grind as fine as Narok so isn’t wanted for trade; &
there seems no one ready to see to it- no one to go ahead
with it. Mr. S. has tried to get them interested. He has
also helpt Motion get a saw agoing but hasn’t really run it
yet. He’s working at it again. They lost interest in things
& are just waiting to get away on furlough. May the Lord
guide about it all. In many places we hear of Revivals &
we continue to pray the Lord will remember us here in Kenya.
The future is as bright as the promises of God and because
of those promises we want to go on toiling & trusting.
God has been with us & kept us all year & He will
again as we trust Him.
