[Inscription:] “A Merry Christmas to Florence, from Lora. 1926.”

“Be not amazed at life,
‘Tis always been the mode of God,
with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfill,
In times & ways they least expect.”

             From Mrs Guither

[From clippings:]

     MY NEW YEAR PRAYER.

Dear Master, for this coming year
     Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
     Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
     The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: “Teach me to do
     The thing that pleaseth thee.”

A quiet lot in life is mine,
     Made up of little things;
Teach me to do as unto thee
     The duties each day brings,
Faithful in that which is the least
     Dear Master, I would be,
Thus making all my daily work
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

I want to please thee through this year
     In every word I say.
Dear Master, take these lips of mine
And keep them day by day
From foolish talking, angry words,
     And evil-speaking free:
Teach me, that I may ever speak
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

Not only what to do and say
     Would I be daily taught;
I ask thee so to cleanse my heart
     And purify each thought
That every thought and every wish
     May pure and holy be.
I want in everything to be
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
     And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
     A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

I will go in the strength of the Lord.

Sun.* Sept. 2

Good meetings & good crowds. About 85 this morning. and nearly 40 this eve. Had good meeting PM too. Read Finneys 2’nd lecture. They are so helpful & just what we need now. There is need for real heart searching. May God reveal Himself as never before.

Tues. Sept. 4

Read only part of Chap. 4 this morning. Good number out again. We do pray God to clean up – beginning in us. I do feel the need of more earnestness in prayer. Jno’s messages are always searching & to the point. Miss Grover attends right along. Mrs. S. is up all day now.

Wed. Sept. 5

Meetings again were very good around 35 attend. A good many children in the evenings. May God work in us too. I wrote some at Bible verses for school but like to spend as much time in prayer as possible. We must have victory.

Thur. Sept. 6

Meetings continue well attended and there seems good interest. Quite a bit of confession & prayer. We do want a greater burden or spirit of prayer ourselves. Mr. Clarke came home in his new Ford brot a friend, so did not come up.

Fri. Sept. 7

There seems more confessing but there is still not the breaking up we’d like to see- perhaps not even in ourselves. We read a lecture every morning & they are helpful. There is an after meeting now for those who wanted to pray. Quite a number staid. Clarke & friend came up for tea & to show us the new Ford.

Sat. Sept. 8

Jno did not come home til 11:30. There was much confessing and praying. I had a searching time by myself. Neither of us got to sleep til very late. Usual Sat. work. Mr C. & friend here for supper but didn’t stay late. Mr. & Mrs S. came over. Mr C. sent our phono up so had music.

Wed. Sept. 12

Bridget didn’t bring milk but came & said Nanjiru had had bad words. Nanjiru was at mtg & came here afterward. owned up her heart is bad but Bridgets is too. Had quite a long talk with Bridget this P.M. She seems to want to make things right but she may find it hard to do.

Thur. Sept. 13

Very good crowd out both A.M. & eve. Nanjiru seems to be waking up a bit & I hope really wants her heart changed tho she hasn’t said so. Bridget has been out to both mtgs but don’t know how much she is trying to make right.

Fri. Sept. 14

Meetings A.M. & eve as usual. Interest may be flagging a bit but there is no lack of prayer or Bible reading. Planning to go fishing tomorrow so mixed bread tonight. Wrote at Lo’s letter.

Sun. Sept. 16

Meetings as usual. I had women this P.M. too which made 5 meetings for me. Too much for every Sun. but this is special. Young men got up- one after another & testified. & then stood up & sung. Rather a good deal of swank ab’t it all. Bridget went to Kraals.

Mon. Sept. 17

Good letter from boys. Chas. & Herman got there on R’s birthday. Not many out this A.M. & none of the young fellows this eve. They are having their own meeting- they resent the way the elders oppose them. I think some are too forward & like to show off. Washed, ironed & mended. Cleaned curtains & put them up again. The mill is grinding. They thot they’d have to move it but shortening pipe gives more power.

Tues. Sept. 18

Miss Grover said this morn she heard singing most all night. Milaun & Wambogo were at meeting all day & both spoke this morning W. saying they did wrong in doing things as they had. But others haven’t been out. There is some thing wrong some place. Very dead tonight. Hot this P.M. & threatened rain. Ate supper at the mill.

Wed. Sept. 19

Elders seem to be “up against” it. The young men are fairly quiet. Tonight we staid til after 10 for we felt there was a deep spirit of prayer. and we hoped things would break up but none confessed. Jno spoke so urgently on the Laodicean church. Mulungit seems stubborn ab’t something.

Thur. Sept. 20

All mtgs as usual. Searching. pointed talks by John. Sitoya was back this eve & made fire. Njoroge & Nareyu were married shenzi style. We are all very disappointed. Were to have civil ceremony at D.C. office. Parmale says it was very bad.

Mon. Sept. 24

Yes, the men got off ab’t 12. Very heavily loaded. Mail came about 2. Letter from Mrs Probst to say she’d take Harry D. The paper says Prince doesn’t arrive in Nairobi til Mon! The men intended coming back Fri. We’ll likely hear from them.

Sun. Sept. 30

Lonely without John. Wrote Mrs Westervelt. Mulungit took A.M. meeting. Women called this P.M. to tell me Bridget slept at Wambogas house! What next. She came for medicine while they were here and later again. We are all troubled. I’d rather W. didn’t teach but Mulungit says its alright.

When we began meetings Sept. 1 we didn’t think they’d keep up all month but they have & a lot has been done. The Lord has cleaned up some but we wonder what this new trouble means. Miss Grover has spent the month here & we’ve been glad for her prayer help.

Mon. Oct. 1

School began. My heart was so heavy last night & til today when I had a talk with Bridget who told me the trouble between her & Wambogo was 4 yrs ago before she was married. She made it right at once but W. only now & so the people here only know ab’t it now. I’m sure she’s right. My I am glad. Men are at Nairobi tonight. Go to Kjb. tomorrow. I’m glad I’m not the Prince of Wales tonight. Sitoya teaches.

Wed. Oct. 3

Bridget didn’t say a thing & I didn’t either. Fixed shoe bag for Johns door. Dr. Cole called this eve to see if I’d teach his head man. Thur. Nov. 22

Men finally got off this AM with the truck to go as far as possible & work on up. hoping to get back Sat. Mrs. S. is staying alone – if she is too nervous I’ll go over another night.

Fri. Nov. 23

Was in school almost all A.M. Had women P.M. & Kerigo came tonight so have had quite a busy day of it. Mrs. S. got on alright last night. Suppose men will be in tomorrow.

Sat. Nov. 24

Sun. Nov. 25

The men wanted us all to go up this week for meetings but Mr. S. has ordered oxen & meetings & road making can’t well both be done. So we may go up next week. Mr. C here to lunch & Watermelon. Good too.

Mon. Nov. 26

Jno walked up & Mr S. went with oxen. It got rather late tho as Mr. C. asked him to put the spring into his car first. Washed & ironed & made candy for C’s birthday tomorrow. Parcel from Lora. Shoes etc very nice.

Rained some yesterday & again today got very black with a bright rainbow. Olgoyai came back this eve. Had class tonight. Mixed bread. Posted boys letters. Took Jnos picture with wonder berry stalk. Only 3 more weeks of school – but we seem only well begun.

Contrary to last year this has not been a very eventful month- just the usual- only that Mrs. S. is away. School has jogged on. I get impatient when I see what wages the teachers get & how poorly they do their work. Too ignorant to do better.

Sat. Dec. 1

Mr. S. was down by noon. Baked & cleaned as usual. Jno working in the garden all day. Showers this P.M. but they just dampen the surface. Getting things together to go up to Ndilais on Mon. Wed. Dec. 5

Mr. C. didn’t care to come up. Still is weak & miserable. Jno goes in to see him each morning. Almost finished shirts.

Thur. Dec. 6

Mr. C. took men to Narok this AM. Children ate here & I just got them settled for naps when men came back. so got their dinner. Mr C came to supper but didn’t stay as he feels very badly.

Fri. Dec. 7

All school & P.M. meeting as usual but Kerigo didn’t come this eve so had the eve at home. Got some school work ready for Wed. Milaun seems so dense in fractions. I don’t know why.

Sat. Dec. 8

Did usual baking & cleaning. Kuyoni went to Narok so S’s ate dinner here. Expected Major Dawson to tea but didn’t come. Mr. C. is quite miserable. Wanted to come up to tea if Dawson came.

Sun. Dec. 9

Got up feeling bum. Head got worse, so was lying down most all day. Skipt all meetings and all meals. Jno ate over at S’s this eve. Mail came with C’s man. Letters from boys. Mrs. W. etc. Jno went down to see Mr. C. He sent me some brandy.

Mon. Dec. 10

Didn’t intend washing for my head is still sore & my stomach not very settled tho the cold seems better. Kanoko did S’s & ours together. Mr S. & Jno went to Lo Murua to see ab’t building. Wed. Dec. 12

Gardens work & I gave the boys work at home so I’m not over there much. I knitted quite a bit. First sleeve well on the way. Jno at the road over the bridge of little stream.

Thur. Dec. 13

Everything as usual. Jno & Mulungit were to go up to Olmurua tomorrow to settle where to put the school but a deputation is here tonight so it looks like there might be trouble about it. Lobo & others called to see ram.

Fri. Dec. 14

Shauri folks came to see Jno & say they didn’t want the school. We asked ab’t tent meetings & they said alright. M. & elders here are determined on the school tho. We are disappointed but do not think its best to force them now.

Sat. Dec. 15

Baking & cleaning. Baked a cocoanut cake for C’s birthday. Got pretty nice. Expected Dawson early to see gardens & tea. Didn’t come tho. Mr. S. got off by 8. Children are here. Partari & some others inspected houses & yards. Yesterday was Clean Up Day.

Sun. Dec. 16

We ate ¼ the cake this noon & ‘twas really good. Wonder how he [Claudon- 18th birthday] feels by this time & whether he’s having a cake. Partari reported on houses. Many of them very bad. Hope some will take it to heart. And now [John, found new road to Shaffer’s house this date previous year.] he’s working on this end of another road up here.

Mon. Dec. 17

And now that road [John’s new road previous year] is used daily. He is working now at one to come up here. Kanoku washed. Children are no trouble. I went to school some. but Partari has a good deal of the time – working outside around building. Mr. C. up for supper but miserable. Came home from Narok today.

Tues. Dec. 18

Finally got the mail. Looks like licenses for cars may be put down to £1 and gas taxed a bit. At that rate it looks more hopeful for us to get the little Ford. Wrote Lo again. Clarke up for supper but ate only soup.

Wed. Dec. 19

Shaffers came in at 1 P.M. All seem fine. Baby has grown. They brot almost every thing I ordered. Mrs. S. has a bad head tonight. Letter from Mrs. Davis. Jno is digging down the road which is to come up here. Thus getting stone for garage.

Thur. Dec. 20

Expected to do big work in school but they still had a lot of outside work to do. Advanced class met for Arith. & song. Gave Wambogo the program. Not very long. Clarkes Rigoletto records came so Jno got Soibi to take prayermtg & we went down. I protested tho.

Fri. Dec. 21

Prayer Day – Meeting at 10. Men went out to Ngiro plains to see if they can get an eland, or something else. We ask Major Dawson to Xmas dinner but he replied he & Mr Roach expect to go to the Mara fishing. We haven’t found a sheep yet. Mbali says he sent out for one.

Tues. Dec. 25

I intended going to early mtg but they got at it too late. Young folks were up all night. Mrs S decorated veranda & dining room very pretty. Got school table. Sent for meat as Mr C didn’t send it up. They came abt 1 so it was 1:30 before we ate for we past presents first. Then went to races but too late then to C’s for supper by bon fire (at back of book).

Christmas day. [From back of book.] Guests were: Dr. Patterson & wife & 3 yr old Angus. Their guests Mr & Mrs. Braithwaite, Donald 8 & Allen 4. Mr. Clarke took pictures before going to C’s. Had “Rigoletto” til ab’t 7:30 then went out to fire & had sandwiches- tarts- candy- & bananas given us by the school. Pleasant time til 9. Dr Patterson was pretty well all in before the eve was over.

It has been an uneventful year in most part. John would disagree to that statement for he considers climbing Kilimanjaro a great event- & so it was but I don’t suppose we will hear of it in eternity.

Wed. Dec. 26    FMS Letter

Got tables exchanged before breakfast. Decorations all down & now we look like we never had had Xmas. Had first meeting at 10 AM and another this eve. Motion went to Nairobi took several along & they aren’t back yet.

Thur. Dec. 27

Baked some tho the flour only came when Mr. S. got here ab’t 11 A.M. I had yeast agoing so soon had bread on the way. all baked by 3. To Clarkes for supper. Major Dawson came for language. Had most of “Rigoletto” after supper.

Sun. Dec. 30

Meetings as usual. At Shaffers for supper. took walk after. Suppose Barnetts will be here next Sun. Jno spoke so searchingly this A.M. I do hope they will soon begin to wake up.

Mon. Dec. 31

Washed before meeting & got bread agoing. Ironed this P.M. and baked bread. Mr C. asked us down for tripe supper at 6. Shaffers went down for pictures. Meeting tonight. Jno gives good talks but gets little response.

Our attempt at the first outschool was not very successful. & we hardly know what to try next along that line. Mulungit is determined it shall be done & has gone to see ab’t it but hasn’t reported what he found.

God knows we have tried to be faithful in teaching & preaching but it is most discouraging sometimes for most seem so indifferent. The school work has been quite gratifying and work around the place has gone on too. Several roads have been made. The mill is in but doesn’t grind as fine as Narok so isn’t wanted for trade; & there seems no one ready to see to it- no one to go ahead with it. Mr. S. has tried to get them interested. He has also helpt Motion get a saw agoing but hasn’t really run it yet. He’s working at it again. They lost interest in things & are just waiting to get away on furlough. May the Lord guide about it all. In many places we hear of Revivals & we continue to pray the Lord will remember us here in Kenya. The future is as bright as the promises of God and because of those promises we want to go on toiling & trusting. God has been with us & kept us all year & He will again as we trust Him.
