[Inscription:] “A Merry Christmas to Florence, from Lora. 1926.”

“Be not amazed at life,
‘Tis always been the mode of God,
with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfill,
In times & ways they least expect.”

             From Mrs Guither

[From clippings:]

     MY NEW YEAR PRAYER.

Dear Master, for this coming year
     Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
     Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
     The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: “Teach me to do
     The thing that pleaseth thee.”

A quiet lot in life is mine,
     Made up of little things;
Teach me to do as unto thee
     The duties each day brings,
Faithful in that which is the least
     Dear Master, I would be,
Thus making all my daily work
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

I want to please thee through this year
     In every word I say.
Dear Master, take these lips of mine
And keep them day by day
From foolish talking, angry words,
     And evil-speaking free:
Teach me, that I may ever speak
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

Not only what to do and say
     Would I be daily taught;
I ask thee so to cleanse my heart
     And purify each thought
That every thought and every wish
     May pure and holy be.
I want in everything to be
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
     And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
     A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
     “The thing that pleaseth thee.”

         Morning.
I will go in the strength of the Lord.
                                        Ps. 71. 16.

Wed. Jan. 1

Shaffers have been home & are planning now on getting back ab’t mid year. Mtgs again [like last year] & neither are they well attended now. John speaks very direct & searching. Tameno has summons to appear in court in Kikuyu country for James. Leaves tomorrow & doesn’t want shauri til he returns.

Thur. Jan. 2

Expect Miss Perrott by mail lorry & Drs were to bring her out in time for tea. When Motion came he had letter from Mrs P. saying she did not come by mail lorry but a wire came saying she was leaving ab’t 2 P.M. They’d bring her out in morning. Mr Clarke drove into his place ab’t 8. No rain today tho hard rain yesterday.

Fri. Jan. 3

Miss Perrott got here about 9:30 last eve. Mr C. also came home but not up here. She is settled in S’s house. Mr. C. up to supper. Called off the evening meeting. so few come out. After supper we went down to C’s for some music. The phono sounds alright tho its badly scratched.

Sat. Jan. 4

Took lunch below the falls & just as we finished it started to rain so we got quite damp. Mr C. not feeling well so didn’t come up & we all went to bed quite early. Baked pie & Kuyoni made noodles.

Sun. Jan. 5

O what a shock we got tonight when mail came from Kijabe telling us Miss Stumpf had been murdered in her bed Thur night & terribly ravished. What are these people coming to? Miss P. sleeps up stairs. We are all rather nervous tonight. Had tea & no supper. There is such an indifferent spirit here in spite of J’s messages.

Mon. Jan. 6

We can think of nothing else & scarcely talk of any thing else than the news of yesterday. Had only A.M. service. J. mentioned a white person killed. None here had heard of it. Mr C. up for supper. Cloudy & rainy so didn’t wash. Worked at binding on my dress. Rested long this P.M. as we got little last night.

Tues. Jan. 7

Parmale washed. Mr C. here for lunch then we went with him for a drive & a shoot. Went way down the Narok to a large plain. Got 2 tommies, wildebeest & buzzard. Had tea. Home to supper & to Clarkes for music & we wrote letters to send off in morning. Miss Perrott enjoyed it all.

Wed. Jan. 8

Ab’t supper time Dr. Bond & Mr Keller drove in. Mr C up too. Fair crowd out to meeting. The men have blankets so sleep over at S’s. Their wives are at Mombasa. Kuyoni ironed. Every one seems to feel the strained & tense condition of things.

Thur. Jan. 9

Just a week ago tonight Miss Stumpf went to glory by that awful route. We all drove to the big falls in Dr’s car with lunch. Jno first taking the mtg. They fished some. Mr C up for supper too. Men want to get off tomorrow. Rainy tonight.

Sat. Jan. 11

Quite a nice mail came in tonight. Wonder if there will be none tomorrow. Mr. C. came to tea & supper. Looked over letters. I read funnies from Aunt A’s letter. One from Mary Brown telling of Mary Alice’s death from pleurisy pneumonia. Aunt A. says things are hard there again. Mrs Warner is selling our old home!!!

Sun. Jan. 12

Mail came tonight. Paper has account of Miss Stumpfs death. Not very encouraging as no arrests have been made. We do hope justice will be met out when culprits are found. It requires tact & wisdom from above for it all. Had a nice walk this eve.

Mon. Jan. 13

Usual work. No A.M. meeting. At 11 we took lunch down valley to monkey house. Jno & Miss Perrott fished. Caught 3. Mr C. up to supper. Brot liver etc of sheep.

Sun. Jan. 19

He told Barnetts he thinks he is getting the criminal alright. Mr. Marsh spoke at P.M. on need of revival. Our hearts said Amen.

Wed. Jan. 22

I staid for some reports, then found I could help with other things so did not go back. Gave Mrs Sywulka the new brown dress I made. & this eve a parcel came with pieces for 5 others. Another $100. from Mr Day. Buiyes & Camps here in motor cars enroute to Congo. Mrs Watson Mrs Myers & I peeled peaches for desert.

Thur. Jan. 23

Tues. Jan. 28

Spent some time at the office for books- etc. This P.M. there was a station tea party at Miss Perrotts for Roxanna & Betty. Most every one out. Rained hard. Mr. S. in bed again with fever. Seems strange to spend evenings quietly at home. No one goes out nights.

Wed. Jan. 29

Mr. Sywulka was up part of the day. Dad & I walked to station. Bot things & boxed for lorry. Hope they go right out. Dr Davis gave us our medical exams today. My tonsils should come out. Heart etc good. Mrs. Hoyt came with Martha but left again right away. Marshes left for Tan. too.

Thur. Jan. 30

Such a long stay at Kijabe has given us a very short time before school. I can’t get to work in earnest tho while the folks are here. We had a good time at Conf but did not see all done we should have liked. God help us to live up to all we did hear.

Sat. Feb. 1

He [Parmale] did go today for meat. Wanted to go for walk this P.M. but started to rain ab’t 3 & rained hard again. Sat & talked after supper. Fri. Feb. 7

Rained some during the night but none today so after tea we went to Narok. Got the box from Ramji Kanji & paid Haji Aboo S. 45. for bringing 10 loads out. Awful! We drove pretty fast as it looked very black but its only sprinkling a bit. No mail lorry went Thur. but will tomorrow.

Sat. Feb. 8

One certainly doesn’t know what a day may bring forth. Jno went over to talk to the elders about what to do ab’t those who want old customs & all said they are going to circumcise their girls and they’ll have their own church in this building!!! Kuyoni Malawa only stood to say he was against it. We went to see Storrs Fox & he came & left some eskaris and is coming tomorrow to clean out all Kikuyu & try to organize the kickers into their own church. Who’ll be leader for all want to.

Sun. Feb. 9

Perhaps next year we’ll laugh at the experiences we’re going thro today but its no joke now. S-F. got here at 9 & talked with the elders a little while. They can’t have mtg in school house. Nor on Mission property. Catechism class folks can’t come to school. Tameno & Mbaei are responsible for law & order. M. was here too. but only looked dark. Had tea about 10:30 & S-F went on to Ndulele. Took walk up past Wambogos. No rain.

Mon. Feb. 10

Sitoya came to school but Jno told him he couldn’t teach & all class (catechism) pupils couldn’t come to school. Milaun taught those that staid ab’t 20. I helpt. S. came this P.M. for a talk. He wants to do right but is afraid of the people. All are putting up the same arguments that the Kikuyu use. I do feel badly. I could cry my eyes out if it would help them to see their mistake.

Tues. Feb. 11

Dad walked up to the village to talk to elders but he could find none. Some rain today but not very hard. B’s spent part A.M. fishing. Kuyoni ironed ab’t all day. Sitoya did not come to school but came this P.M. & Ngomaiyu & talked & argued for over an hour. When they went S. seemed convinced that we were right but he is afraid of the people.

Wed. Feb. 12

No picnic tomorrow for ab’t 3 P.M. it rained & blew awful! Came in on all sides & rushed down the hillsides hard for a time. Very pleasant all A.M. Parmale is very unhappy today. He wants much to come to school. Says he wants to stop work when B’s go. & I’ll not object. he is not doing well these days.

Thur. Feb. 13

No rain. So at 2 we left for Ngiro & tea. Stopt at office on way. S-F. says we shouldn’t worry ab’t things all will come out well. He dreamed. Well I’d rather look to God to bring order out of all this than to man. I am not so nervous as I was but people are not yet happy to us.

Fri. Feb. 14

They left about 8. It has been rather empty & lonely today. No rain so hope they got over alright. Threatened black but blew away. Sewed pants, waist & dress for Wanjiku Kamoni. Will now go at J’s sweater hard. Wrote Mrs Bischoff. Parmale will stay on til after wash Mon.

Sat. Feb. 15

Mr. C. came ab’t 3 with 15 nice fish for the pond. and a nice mess for our supper. Spent evening here. Must go back tomorrow. May not sail on 27. No rain tonight. Kamoni brot eggs & announced that his wife Njeri had a baby. Gave him the clothes.

Sun. Feb. 16

Today was as disappointing. [as conversation with Mulungit this date a yr. ago where he “sat glum and did not answer a word.”] Rung bell for S.S. but none came. Rung for church but all were going to Nareyus so we went too. Tameno was chairman. Mulungit spoke. Among other things read Gal. 1. Both of them seemed troubled & not free to speak. Mr C. was to come for lunch but it got too late. He told Jno 2 men would help at dam. Have felt very weepy all day. God is able.

Mon. Feb. 17

Rung bell for school but none came. Kuyoni had to go to Narok to see about kibandi as some here want to have him put into prison. D.C. says no hut tax til 1931. Parmale washed- lots of sheets & table linen. Very windy. Mr. C’s 2 men helpt Jno at the dam & its going fine. I took tea down for all. Kuyoni forgot mail.

Tues. Feb. 18

Parmale wants to stop work but will go to Narok when necessary. Went today took eggs to Mrs Paterson. She sent Sh. 20 for what she’s gotten. Had school with Kuyoni & Milaun. Tomorrow Sermetei may come. Letter from Cora. They are not going to China til 1931. Walked up to duka - folks not very pleasant.

Wed. Feb. 19

Thot I’d do a lot today as they went to gardens – but my head got bad & worse & worse. Ab’t 3 I finally got relief by vomitting. First bad spell for several months. Gashisha & Sitoya & Milaun helpt at dam this P.M. & so have the trough set in its place & the water closed off. Will be pretty well finished by Sat.

Thur.* Feb. 20

Had school with the three only Milaun came very late. Had prayermtg this P.M. and 21 were out. most took part in prayer. Jno told them all the children could come to school. I’m glad now they can’t hold that against us. Mr. C. came out this eve & came up to eat. Wants us to go for a drive tomorrow.

Fri. Feb. 21

We started for Narosero ab’t 9. but got to Ngiro & found back spring badly broken. so came back & tho we had lunch with us we cooked things here. So it was 2 before we ate. Letters here. One from Mr. Probst telling us they let all come to school so I’m glad for what Jno told our people yesterday. Had Rigoletto tonight.

Sat. Feb. 22

Expected Major Dawson & a lady for lunch but he only came after tea for a short visit. He doesn’t sympathize much with us in our troubles, but will help what he can. Mr C to lunch & supper. I knitted at sweater & we talked all eve. Expects his spring tomorrow & will put it in at once & leave on Mon. Wonder what tomorrow has for us.

Sun. Feb. 23

Were so happy when we went to S.S. & children began coming. 49 in all. Good crowd out to A.M. meeting & we again praised God. & then P.M. mtg. but after it they said we must either have communion with them or they’d stop school & all mtgs. Made us sad then we went down to see how Mr C. was getting on & he had just crushed the end of his finger awful. Sent for Dr. He went back with him to Narok.

Mon. Feb. 24

C. came back ab’t 9. John went down. He said he had to drive for Dr last night. Some one came with him this morn. & he got together what he needed & left for Nrb. asked John to pack things into the house & lock up. Didn’t say how much finger was taken off. Had the 2 boys in school & Sermetei. Parmale washed. Very black & windy tonight. Some rain.

Tues. Feb. 25

Parmale came to school today too. John working in garden. Milaun asked if Sitoya & Elija could come. Yes, gladly. Nice mail last eve. Letter from boys. Kuyoni ironed. Nolminangai brot figs. Olle Motion came in a hurry & his car all smoking badly. Must have burned something.

Wed. Feb. 26

This P.M. two fellows drove up & said they had come for Mr Clarkes car. We gave them the keys & they are working at it. Want to go back to Nairobi tomorrow. Terrible wind & rain storm this P.M. Jno said we had 3 storms. He stormed at me & I at him cause we couldn’t find keys. Parmale had picked ‘em up.

Thur. Feb. 27

Today Mr. Clarke was to sail. He wont have so pleasant a trip with his sore finger. Sitoya & Parmale came to school yesterday but the elders said they must not. Said they should wait for 3 mos then John would relent & take all back into church & school!!! I sowed pansy & aster seed. Sewed a dress fror Mrs Puakeya.

Fri. Feb. 28

Mrs. Kashisha here sewing & ordered two dresses for herself and some for the children. Letters from Guithers, Stacy & Mrs. Wood. The fellows that fixed Clarkes car & took it away took his keys too. Mohammed went to Narok to see about it. Major Dawson gave him a lock for the garage. but the house is still open. Parmale will go tomorrow with letters & bring meat. No rain today tho dark in N.W. John working at putting wire & cloth in school windows.

And there never was a month so full of disappointments as this one has been. I don’t think God means for us to be depressed & sad but I do feel he wants us to be much in prayer. A year ago 3 attended my night class now that’s my day school. God knows how ‘twill all end.

Sat. Mar. 1

Baked a little but not much. K. ground corn & wheat for porridge. Mzee brot mulberries & we gave him corn. Parmale went to Narok. Brot meat & took Mrs. Paterson eggs. Threatening but not much rain today.

Sun. Mar. 2

Rung for S.S. & 10 little ones came. The 2 & 3 herd boys staid for A.M. services. Saw many girls & women dressed in hi colors going to Narok. They said an airplane was coming. It didn’t but a big rain did & about 5 numbers past here with running colors - soaked. Saw Mulungit in distance & several elders. They had no mtg.

Wed. Mar. 5

It was very dark this morning & started to rain before breakfast. and rained so hard I didn’t go to school. I swept & cleaned the east room up stairs tho my head ached – it ached all night but is better this eve. Nolminangai came to sew. I finished John’s white shirt & have my old made over. raw silk most done. Raining hard this eve.

Thur. Mar. 6

Expected mail but the lorry broke down so it didn’t come in. School as usual. More rain this eve. Am getting a good bunch of letters off this time. The dam washed out last night. The new soft part. Such heavy rain no wonder.

Fri. Mar. 7

Olle Shongo went to Narok. Took letters. Olle Motion brot mail. Nothing from home but Clarke’s velvet coat for John & a white shirt and a letter from Mrs Barnett saying the trouble there is awful. She has been threatened. We do need trust & quietness these days.

Sat. Mar. 8

Baked some. Kuyoni got some wood. Parmale went to Narok. John put new glasses in bedroom windows. More rain. Knitted quite a piece as dress & petticoat are finished.

Sun. Mar. 9

One extra to S.S. and 3 old women to church. Think they had meeting at Nareyus house. Nice time this P.M. quiet & Bible searching. Our own service this eve- it seems has been prepared for us- Acts- so helpful. Not much rain- clear & cold.

Mon. Mar. 10

Parmale washed. Most got dry. but some rain again this eve. Olle Motion slipt off the grade & backed into the spring straight in front of the house here. couldn’t get out tonight as its got dark & rainy.

Tues. Mar. 11

About 20 men went down this morning & got the car back up onto the grade & tonight he brot it up. He uses no chains. Its a wonder he doesn’t slip more. Terrible wind & rain this P.M. Came from north like a huge cloud.

Wed. Mar. 12

Almost no rain today. Had a walk up to duka. Olle Motion brot no letters. perhaps he wasn’t in office today. Finished remaking my blue barred dress. looks fairly decent. John seems rather discouraged tonight. & I don’t seem to have tact to help. We read & had prayer. Do hope the Lord will work among these people.

Thur. Mar. 13

A lovely day & a lovely mail tonight. All sorts of letters. “Kenya Mt” book too Jno had sent for. Picture roll from some one in German town etc. Walked up to Parmale’s house. Saw Olduboi. Seemed very pleasant. Good letter & lots of prints from the boys.

Fri. Mar. 14

Finally finished up the Ward list and have all ready to send tomorrow. Parmale went to Narok today. so will send by Olle Motion tomorrow. John worked at road down by stream. Dirt had washed down bad. Another school week done. Half term over.

Sat. Mar. 15

Head not good all day but did all the usual work. Tead at the bridge where Jno was working. I wrote letters this eve & Jno played “Rigoletto”. Had a long walk to top of hill after supper. Little white kitty disappeared last night. Must have been carried away by something.

Sun. Mar. 16

This has been such a hard day. Such a different hard than last year. How I’ve prayed God would fill us that we may help these people. John went to their meeting but said the talk & all was bitter. We know it is not only circum. but all sorts of things against all white people. Saw Nyakeiru on our walk. Some rain. O God fill me & keep me filled!!!

Mon. Mar. 17

Every thing as usual. Pretty heavy rain again. Clothes all dry tho. Very heavy heart. After prayer & Bible reading this P.M. it seemed better. I thank God He knows all about us. But He keeps so far away. I long to realize He is near. even in my heart all the time.

Tues.* Mar. 18

Wambogo called Kuyoni out of school for shauri. They wanted him to relent. but not he! So they came here & his father said if Jno was his father he should change the name on his kibandi. They talked for 3 ½ hrs. Sitoya & Njuguna too were there. They told Jno the D.C. said after 6 mo. we would take them back!! Its not just Circum. question but land & white men in gen’l taking things from them.

Wed. Mar. 19

Lots of smoke in house last night. Headache much of the day. Worse this P.M. Had a nice quiet time this P.M. I go to Shaffers house for it. Wrote Kijabe letters. Cora’s parcel came last eve. Olgoyai brot it. Am sending him one of the red kerchiefs. Starting to read Whites “Lord, teach us to pray” aloud Wed. eve. Have ab’t finished it to myself. Rained this P.M.

Thur. Mar. 20

Kuyoni says his father has taken all his sheep. 6 of them. I wonder if its best to let him go or if we ought to write the D.C. I felt terribly burdened at prayer time today. Perhaps something was being planned by the opposition. No headache today at all! Rained.

Fri. Mar. 21

Prayer Day. Boys & I had short time together before school. Jno & I tonight after reading chap. from Whytes “Lord Teach us to pray”. It is very good. Has helpt me a lot. Kuyoni went to see his father today but did no good. Rained hard & is still at it.

Sat. Mar. 22

No rain today. Work as usual. John at stumps. Quite a few at the door for different things & walked up past M’s for a walk. Saw several & told them I had materials from home. Wrote letters. Enjoyed the P.M. quiet time.

Sun. Mar. 23

Guess the Lord wanted to give us a little encouragement- as Sitoya, Parmale & Kapirondoi came to S.S. & services & John announced P.M. meeting & Nolminangai & Silole & Sermetai came to that. We thank God for all He gives us but we do want to see His spirit in their lives.

Mon. Mar. 24

Sitoya wanted to come to school but elders are still opposed & he thinks he must listen. Poor fellow has troubles too. Parmale washed. John worked at dam but it was washing out this eve again. Got very black & lightened & blew but not much rain. Letters are ready. P. goes in morning.

Tues. Mar. 25

P. went to Narok. Brot nice mail & meat. Rained pretty hard again. Nyakeiru & Elisa came & chose dresses & Nolminangai & Nareyu Olle Naisho and I’ll sew them all. Can’t say the same this year. [May last year was “A very pleasant month in many ways.”] Makes our hearts ache to see how things are this year. [Last year this date “Several new ones are joining class - 6 are to be baptized Sun. and several taken back into communion.”] God knows who are true to Him. Have enjoyed quiet time in P.M. more than ever - have not had to be limited. How we do study & stand on His promises these days.

Mon. June 2

And today we opened school but only 2 boys there. Sitoya had said he was coming but the elders got after him to wait. Again this day is past. O these Sun. are so hard. The two boys at S.S. Sermetei, her mother & Nolmisheni at church. No P.M. meeting. so they had none either. I had a good sing all by myself. & felt better afterward. No matter what chiefs or DCs say after all its the Lord who must work in hearts.

Wed. June 18

Children went to gardens. Harvesting corn. They didn’t touch them all last term. so there is plenty to do. Kashisha asked Jno to make peace with the 3- but asked ab’t communion when we were having it. They seem to think we’ll give in on that too as we have on the teacher.

I was called out Mrs. Dawson came for eggs as he is ill. & she had none. We do pray the Lord will work in lives this week.

Mon.* June 23

Very dark & showery all day. After dinner Sitoya came to see John. said none would come to com. next Sun. for what he said yesterday was “kidole”. Jno said it is what God requires no matter what they call it. He said Nol. wants cir. & he doesn’t care! He has surely changed & I want to talk to him tomorrow. I’ve prayed much. God brot deliverance to Mordecai & Jews on June 23! Perhaps He is working for us now.

Tues. June 24

Parmale washed but didn’t get very dry. Had quite a long talk with Sitoya and to me he speaks as always. He wants to stop these things but others don’t want to. Lovely mail in today. Big letters from each sister & nice one from boys. Yarn has come to Narok. Will send customs first chance.

Wed. June 25

Children in gardens. Mrs Dawson past & said they wanted us for lunch. She’d be back for us. Major D. is still quite ill with fever. She is worried. We had nice time. got yarn also tin petrol. On way back met Decks going in. It is well for Major D. fretted about the office work. Brot carnation cuttings.

Thur. June 26

Sitoya asked what he should do. So I tried to show him from the Test. what God wanted. Nolminangai only woman at meeting. She said she’d like to take communion on Sun. She got yarn. I’ll teach her to knit. Kashisha & usual young ones out to prayer mtg. Jno cleaning up brush along pond. Looks nice. Wrote boys.

Fri. June 27

Letter from Mr. Deck to say they will come to tea tomorrow. Very dark heavy clouds most all day. & cold. First month of school finished. and we have only just begun. The longer program is working out fine. Sitoya does so well.

Sat. June 28

Baked & cleaned. Major Dawson was not yet able to come tho he is better. Popped some corn & they all enjoyed it. Angus Paterson came along. Small mail. local. Got sort of a shock when Mrs Dawson said its goodby for good. & I haven’t spoken a word to her of God. I must write her.

Sun. June 29

At communion this P.M. Nolminangai and Sitoya & Elija took. This is the break and we hope the good work will go on. Met some Am. camped here. Mr & Mrs Dodd & 2 white hunters. Asked them up but they refused. She came for a cup of tea. They wanted us to eat there but Jno didn’t want to at all. Very nice form Wash. State. Will be back in 2 mo.

Mon. June 30

Sitoya had to go to Narok so with Kuyonis help I did all the school work. Wanjeri beginning work here. Its good for Kuyoni to stop for a bit. Campers left about 8. Several bot yarn today. Very cold & cloudy all day. Finished Lo’s letter & also finished knitting ribbed bottom for Nolminangais sweater.

This is the end of ½ of 1930. A more trying & disappointing half year we never lived thro. May God bring out of it all greater glory to His name. It has passed very fast in spite of it all.

Tues. July 1

Wanjeri washed & most dried tho it was cloudy & cold most all day. Am wearing the gray jersey dress. & thick stockings & then have cold feet. Asked Nolmisheni to come for talk. She says she’ll forgo cir. if her father will permit. O these fathers will have something to answer for. John had 7 to his class tonight.

Wed. July 2

Nolmisheni said yesterday that they are all 4 to be done this month. I think J. is most as upset ab’t it as I am. I was awake much last night thinking & praying. Only She & Etta came to class. We went thro 1st part of catechism then I talked to them & prayed. Nice mail. Wanjere went. Nice letter from Mrs Dawson too.

Thur. July 3

Sewing but not many out. Jno had 8 at his prayermtg. tonight. Hope I have as many to mine tomorrow. Wambui came to finish sewing & I had chance to speak to her. I do hope God will speak. I saw Mulungit this morn & asked him to speak to Olduboi as I never can get hold of him.

Fri. July 4

There were 8 women & girls out this P.M. So glad that Nolmisheni comes. She seems to want to do whats right. Hope she isn’t misled. 1/3 of the term gone & 1 week of the second third. The days do go fast. I’m doing bread but shall let Wanjere do it next week. Wrote local letters.

Sat. July 5

Baked & cleaned. Wanjere is so thoro. Wambogo came for gun. leopard caught a sheep. Hope we get the leopard. The last skin I sent cost 8.80 postage. Garden looks much better but not all done yet. Started Naiyolong’s sweater for her. Mosquitos were bad last night but not like 3 yrs. ago.

Sun. July 6

Meetings as usual. Had hoped for a chance to speak to Olduboi and as he was at A.M. service I thot I might get a word with him some time. All men & most women too had left & he & Mbaei stood talking so I took it the Lord wanted me to speak. May He somehow use my words to His glory. They both said their girls could do as they liked ab’t circum. I hope they didn’t lie.

Mon. July 7

Wanjere washed. John working at bank of pond, & at dam too. Good attendance at school. There’s such a pull of prayer these days for the 4 girls. I can’t get them from my mind day or night. May be the Lord wants me to spend some time during the night in prayer. I want to if He will awaken me.

Tues. July 8

Every thing as usual. Have things ready for Wanjere to take to Narok tomorrow. Naiyolong got letters this eve for Kijabe. She goes tomorrow. Helped Nolminangai & Etta with sweaters. Elisa came yesterday. Cold tonight. Bright moon. J had 12 to class.

Wed. July 9

Lots of lovely mail. From boys & Lo & another from Mr. Day & cheque. We do thak God. Nolmisheni is the only one who came to class today. I do believe she wants to do right. My how we do want God to work in their hearts. Lovely mutton from Mrs Paterson.

Thur. July 10

Had a lovely time at sewing class. Etta sewed at her jacket made from an old black serge skirt. Nol. brot her machine & sewed too. Everybody busy & happy. How I pray it may continue - that God will work & not let Satan win in this struggle.

Fri. July 11

Six women at prayer meeting. We had read & were ready for prayer when Major Dawson drove in. Jno wasn’t here so I came & made tea. J soon came. He says the lower bridge will soon be put in. we are sorry but God knows best & is allowing it.

Sat. July 12

Boys cleaned up Shaffers house. and are back in the cook house now. Wanjere cleaned. I made orange mar. and guava jelly. baked a bit sewed 2 dresses for girls at Nanjirus kraal. Waweru brot a huge puff adder. killed near here. Wrote the boys tonight.

Sun. July 13

More out to S.S. The usual number to services. Nolminangai was to help with the children but she didn’t come all day. Long walk after supper. J. not feeling very well. Thinks avacadoes upset him. How we do pray God may have been glorified today thro His Word.

Mon. July 14

Got a letter from her [arrow drawn to Iva Herron, 1927] in last mail. Quite cloudy most all day & sprinkled a bit & cold this P.M. but boys wash got dry. Jno still digging up reeds in pond. Another day for far side will finish it. Knitters came this eve for help. Sh 6/ of eggs ready for Major Dawson.

Tues. July 15

Kashisha went to Narok. Brot meat & semsem & cash. & mail. Quite a number of letters again. Mbaei helpt Jno awhile this morning. When I came from school they had a 10 ft. python at the back door. These many snakes killed are hard on our bank account. Cold tonight.

Wed. July 16

Wanjeri took eggs to Mrs. Paterson & brot mutton & bacon. Nolmisheni the only one to class again. She seems rel earnest & said today she wants much to be baptised & I think it might be well to do it soon as it will be a help to keep her from circumcision.

Thur. July 17

Parmale has spoken to John & wants too to be baptised. If it seems best we’ll have baptism & communion a week from Sun. Am still expecting God will change the girls hearts & perhaps they too will be baptised. Had such a nice time in sewing class today. Why shouldn’t we go on having nice times?

Fri. July 18 Raymond ‘08

Another year rolled onto R’s shoulders. Started a letter to him. My head has been bum most all day. 6 out to meeting but only 2 prayed. Sort of Indian Summer today. Cloudy & thundered this eve. Prayer day. long list of requests.

Sat. July 19

Didn’t bake much. Wanjere cleaned. as usual. Susana Nol. did some sewing. Etta has a felon starting on middle finger. Washed hair. Knitted this P.M.

Sun.* July 20

Good attendance this A.M. Mulungit was out. Didn’t speak to him as there were several needing medicine. Nolmisheni cut her hand & Silole her foot pretty badly. Jno announced we’d baptize next Sun. I do hope the girls will join up too.

Mon. July 21

Not many out to school. Parmale only got back from Nairaq Ngare. Etta has bad finger. Elija something else. Wambui takes no interest. Jno at the dam again. If men will help he wants to move it lower down stream. below crossing & carry water around hill. If they wont help he wont do it.

Tues. July 22

When Kaparore came this eve on his bicycle for class he brot our mail. ‘Twas nice to get it so unexpected. Letters from Boys & Guithers. Glad for ‘em all. Didn’t rest but went to Shaffers house for quiet time. Wanjere tried out lot of beef fat I got from Kashisha. also ironed.

Wed. July 23

Nolmisheni came to class & I gave her special questions so as to be sure she knew what she was doing when she is baptised on Sun. She is so earnest I’m sure she intends to do right. Mr Denning, Narok School, brot Mrs Paterson over for tea. They were here only ab’t an hour.

Thur. July 24

Some rain last night & more tonight. days warm & heavy clouds. So strange for this time of year. Jno had no prayer mtg tonight. He is working below the crossing where the mill is to be. Sewing class but not many out. Susana did not come. getting grass.

Fri. July 25

I had called off the prayer mtg this P.M. as all women are busy but Nolmisheni wanted it & said others would come so I called. 3 came. Martha nor Elija at school. I fear that shows the devil is busy there. Etta came. Her finger is better. Hard rain tonight.

Sat. July 26

Work as usual. More rain tonight. How strange. I put in some flower seeds & Jno set out the papai trees. Have not yet heard any thing ab’t Martha. Finished robin letters & wrote several others. I do feel sad ab’t the 3 girls. Wish so they too would be baptized tomorrow.

Sun. July 27

Such a rain this P.M. & eve. Now its fairly clear. Kashisha brot a leopard skin this morning. Very large. Nolmisheni & Parmale were baptised. Martha came to meetings but John misunderstood me & thot she had been done so laid down the law to Soibi tho he wasn’t there. Now there are black looks again & much grumbling. Elija did not come to communion this P.M. Nor did Nolminangai but it was raining so very few were out.

Mon. July 28

Kashisha helping at the mill. He is eager now to get it in. None of the 3 girls at school. Elija was but was not happy. Tameno came back today & we saw him & Soibi on the path talking. I do hope the devil wont use J’s words to stir up things here again. That he said Soibi could not come into church for 2 yrs & before he could be an elder he’d have to sign.

Tues. July 29

Olleshongo was going to Narok so brot mail. Innis urges us to attend Dist. Prayer Conf. at Barnetts. We had decided we couldn’t but if we use Mr. Days money we can & are now planning on it tho we’ll have to cut school one week short. John had no boys for class tonight. The elders are again stirring things up.

Wed. July 30

Wanjere went to Narok with eggs. brot mutton but its the last for awhile as Mr. Denning leaves for a mo. I get quite excited when I think of going to Barnetts. The leopard skin is not drying well. It has wrinkled badly so we’ll soak & stretch. Had short mtg with Nolmisheni. Guess I’ll have no more class now.

Thur. July 31

Only 4 girls out for sewing & two women for help. John had only 4 at prayermtg tonight. The elders seem to be stirring things up pretty generally. Tho they haven’t stopt school yet. Got all bills paid up. Wanjere seemed to think he should have food money extra. God is good to give us the shillings for all.

We’ve had a pretty good month compared with the last six. We hardly thot when the month began we would have baptised 2 before it closed. God is good & we pray He may continue to work. Still praying for the 3 girls. Mtgs. this week are poorly attended because the elders are angry again. God forgive ‘em.

Fri.* Aug. 1

Three weeks from today we ought to get to Kijabe for Barnetts. Gives me quite a thrill. 3 out to prayer meeting. Johns arm quite lame. must have strained it a bit. Wrote Bertha Simpson.

Sat. Aug. 2

Cleaned & baked as usual. Susana (Nolminangai) brot her sweater & I sewed it & got it fitted & finished. She had knit the neck too hi behind. Had hoped to make Sermetei’s mothers dress but couldn’t get at it. Wrote boys. Letter from Davises at Coast.

Sun. Aug. 3

Trouble again! No matter how careful we try to be the Devil twists things & troubles folks by our words. The three faithful ones say Jno said “Kidole” is nothing. & others are accusing them of putting the wrong meaning into J’s words. What J. said was “Kidole” does not save if other things aren’t right. Lovely day & fair number out but none of the elders. All 3 girls.

Mon. Aug. 4

Wanjere washed. I sewed Mrs. Mohomet’s dress - mended etc. Washed jersey dress & tried to stretch. Now its too short so will let out hem. Clear & beautiful today. Leopard skin is dry but head is spoiled. Jno thinks he saw one of the original big fish today in pond. He burned brush.

Tues. Aug. 5

Wanjere brot meat & mail. Not much of either. 2 or 3 home letters. One from Korea so the cloth will likely be here soon. A letter I wrote Mrs Shaffer in April returned without finding her. I’m sorry. Wonder if that’s the way all will go. I’m sending it & another to Eng. hope to catch ‘em there.

Wed. Aug. 6

Wanjere ironed. John at ram this P.M. but couldn’t do much as we have no proper wrenches. Putting 2 strips of red into sleeves of J’s sweater for haven’t enuf gray. Easy day today. No class this P.M. Etta was at the door for yarn. How I do wish those girls would return to school.

Thur. Aug. 7

A good number to sewing class but none of the 3 girls. Every thing as usual. At school all A.M. Wrote Aunt A. this eve. John had 6 out to prayermeeting. Wonder how many I’ll have tomorrow.

Fri. Aug. 8

Not a woman at mtg. Will we be at Kijabe by 2 wks. from tonight? Jno & Kashisha working at ditch to the mill. Jno found the old brake on Mr. C’s cart just the thing to raise & lower the stone. The original one was rusted fast so can’t be moved & is not strong. Ram needs wrench. K. will go to Narok & see ab’t borrowing one.

Sat. Aug. 9

Very cloudy most all day. Sat. work as usual. Mbaei came early this morn to say Hana was very ill. Later got Kinanjui to take her to the hospital. She is to have a baby soon. hope she gets along alright. Wanjiku borrowed the machine. Perhaps it wasn’t wise. I wont let it go again.

Sun. Aug. 10

Usual number out. My how I wish this spirit of indifference would be overcome. The 4 Kijabe girls sang a Kikuyu song & repeated Scripture. A note from Major Dawson on safari. Is having a very wet time of it. Wanted eggs. 4 Atende men want school. Came here from Kjb. Don’t know what we can do for them.

Mon.* Aug. 11

Every thing as usual. Wanjere washed. Nice & sunny. The 4 Atendes asked J for work but didn’t want to dig at the ditch nor do they want to work for any of our people so they left. Didn’t come to school at all.

Tues. Aug. 12

John didn’t try class tonight. Wanjere brot mail. Mrs. Barnetts letter says Innis put Conf. a week late. We must come a week earlier. We can’t - so I’ve written her & will try to wire too. So now we are planning a little trip out & will meet Guilding on the road perhaps.

Wed. Aug. 13

Very free day now with no P.M. class. Etta brot machine & Susana N. sewed this A.M. I did this P.M. Made a jacket for Roda. Getting letters ready for Kuyoni to take tomorrow.

Thur. Aug. 14

John came from prayermtg & said Olle Motion has come with gallons of beer. He’ll have plenty of friends now. Xmas when he had some what a kick was made. Now they all drink! What a dif. a few mos. of following Satan makes. He’s threatening to take Nolmisheni by force & have her done. God help us now.

Fri. Aug. 15

Olle Motion took a load of those Kikuyu girls to Narok. We hope they’ll go home soon. Kuyoni not well yet but in school. Nolmisheni & Susana Nol. out to prayer mtg. God bless ‘em. Those 4 girls sang in church last Sun. Hope they don’t ask again for they were dancing & singing last night. Wrote Iva Herron. Prayer Day.

Sat. Aug. 16

Wanjere got breakfast but seemed too ill to do more. I’ve done everything alone today. Parmale will come in the morning if Wanjere doesn’t. K. is not feeling well yet, either. Expected D.C. this PM but he didn’t come. Wrote Mrs Bischoff. The mill is running but not grinding yet. Sewed Kahki dresses for Kashisha’s girls.

Sun. Aug. 17

Meetings as usual. Today it was Tameno’s turn to come. One of the elders comes every Sun. Susana was at S.S. Wonder why she has come home now. perhaps for cir – girls were all out today. Susana Nol. did not come to S.S. Was away & didn’t get back til P.M. meeting. Oldubois wife out.

Mon. Aug. 18

Wanjere washed. Quite cloudy but got dry. J put box into water run to regulate water - its too high & too small. Kuyoni still miserable. Staid in bed all day. Had some temp.

Tues. Aug. 19

Nice mail. Letter from Shaffers they will leave in Oct. with regular party. Little extra money from Office & 100. from Mr Day. God bless him. I’d like to put it aside for car but Dad thinks we better send it to the boys. and perhaps that is best. Kuyoni still in & Nol. not well Kashisha cut his knee badly.

Wed. Aug. 20

I went to see Nol. this eve. & took medicine. Talked to her abt going to Kjb to girls home. She wants to. Says Motion has threatened to force her. & her father says if she wont be done she can leave. The girls are to be done when school is over. O God we do cry for thy help. Suppose folks are gathered at Barnetts.

Thur. Aug. 21

Have been thinking much about the folks at Barnetts today. Hope they are having a blessed time together. Kuyoni went to Narok for medicine. Asked D.C. to come to tea & dinner but said he would come to tea next week some time. John had 3 to prayermtg. Nyakeiru brot Khaki to make up shirts & dresses.

Fri. Aug. 22

How well I remember all these years. And little did we think when we headed this way in 1927 that in less than 3 short years it would be possible to have such conditions as exist here now. Satan works fast when he gets at it. Wanjere cleaned up Shaffers house for Guilding.

Sat. Aug. 23

Baked & cleaned as usual. Sewed M’s khaki shirt & delivered it but no one was there but the children. Wrote Boys tonight.

Sun. Aug. 24

Not any elders out to meeting. S.S. was well attended. Cloudy & cold. Had fire in meeting. Took long walk tonight. Only 2 women out this P.M. Nor was Susana at S.S. Kuyoni taught little folks.

Mon. Aug. 25

Sewed Geo.’s shirt & took it up. M. returned this P.M. & Tameno & Mbaei were there. We walked to Mbaei’s to see Hana & new baby. She is willing to have prayer m’t’g there on Fri. so am telling the women & hope a good number will come. Sitoya not well but at school.

Tues. Aug. 26

Nice mail & leg o’ mutton. Cora’s are all quite well again, even Lois. Als were there. Aunt Lorene wrote Uncle Henry Offerle had died and also Abner O. almost the same day. Boys wrote from Montrose. Mr. Day was paying expenses. Sewed Nyakeirus dress & delivered. John got a fright this noon by almost stepping on a momba at east end of house & it got away while he got the gun. Now where is it? Under the house likely.

Wed. Aug. 27

Wanjere ironed. Easy day as all went to gardens til 12. John not feeling well. Slept little last night. Boys wanted him to meet with ‘em but he didn’t feel like it. Wish he could see what a privilege it is. Sewed Ida’s dress of pieces. Got mail ready for Kuyoni to take tomorrow & the leopard skin.

Thur. Aug. 28

Jno didn’t want me to send skin for I don’t think we could do a worse job. The mouth has no hair & as we were wrapping it the skin cracked or broke across the neck. But its gone now & if he can’t use it he can say so & we’ll not send another like it. Sewing class fair attendance sewed several dresses. How well I remember all these previous years - & last too. Jno is trying to bait the snake with an egg. no success so far.

Fri. Aug. 29

Today we closed school but would much rather have kept on if it would keep the devil from doing his work here. Prayer mtg at Hanas & 10 women came. mostly young ones. Just have to keep praying much. much. for the girls.

Sat. Aug. 30

Several helpt Jno at the mill & got the hopper put up. It grinds pretty well. Baked some. not much. Wanjere cleaned. Wrote Guithers tonight. No snake has come around. Guess it was as scared as John. Kashisha got the gun.

Sun. Aug. 31

All the girls out to the services today. O if that would only be true during the next few Sun. I had bad head this P.M. Couldn’t go to meeting. Mbaei was out - & Kashisha. Lots to S.S. May God have spoken to their hearts by His Spirit.

I know this last month has been pretty trying sometimes - rather from suspense - for we heard Nol. wold be taken by force & we don’t want that. nor she either. She is still apparently as determined as ever to stand. These next days will be hard no doubt for the others seem determined to be done. God help us to hold on in faith for them all.

Mon. Sept. 1

O dear, it hurts to have to make this record. Sitoya called about 11 to say they were going to do Nol. We hurried down to find a crowd there and she said she wanted it. Olduboi was like drunk. Most unreasonable & we could get no answer from him only he said he would not give her to Sitoya no matter what she did. That with other threats no doubt weakened her. I tried to pray with her but she wouldn’t nor would she answer when I asked her what words changed her heart. Her only excuse was the others are doing it. Sitoya feels awful. D.C. came but could do nothing since she gave in. The boys & Kashisha say they think we should leave. That will take time.

Tues. Sept. 2

Is this our last evening alone? Likely for some time at least. Boys say there was a big carousal last night: dancing & singing vile songs by all the people & today the 5 girls were done. God have mercy on them all. The elders told Olduboi he’d have to clear out from here if he didn’t force Nol to it. Audacity! for he’s the only one in his proper dist. We didn’t sleep well. Parmale brot mail & says people say we Kidole folks are very bad. The boys say no use staying here as no one wants the Words of God. Letter from Lo. things are bad in China. Paper says India is making lots of trouble again. Alright, the more trouble there is the nearer comes our deliverance.

Wed. Sept. 3

I fixed up S’s house for G’s. and got lunch packed & supper ready by 10:30 when we left for the hi bridge. We had told them we’d wait for lunch til 1. & we did. Abt 3 a lorry came & they said they saw them at Quarantine ab’t 12. They were waiting for another car to show them the way. We had tea at 4:15 and were just out of the valley on our way home when they came down the far side and Farnsworths in their car. They were heavily loaded but we squeezed in and got here in good time so I got upstairs fixed up for F’s. Then had supper of noodle soup & shortcake. All pretty tired but all staid up late talking. So good to see some of our own folks.

Thur.* Sept. 4

Very late breakfast. John fixed the ram right away. I got dinner ready - or the boys did - and unpacked groceries. & put things away. This P.M. all but Mr. G. went to Narok & got the Korean cloth. also Johns book “Thro Cent. Af.” by Mr Roome. The cloth is very nice. & I think will sell alright at sh. 2/- tho 1.75 will cover cost. I do miss Wanjires good work. The boys seem so irresponsible. Hard to decide just what we should do. F’s want to get on to Letein.

Fri. Sept. 5

I baked some as we are planning a trip tomorrow. No rest this P.M. as we had lunch above falls and when we got back ‘twas time for meeting. 7 came here. F’s told us that Naiyolong stood up at Kijabe. I’m so glad. Talking this eve. We women by the fire & the men out on the veranda.

Sat. Sept. 6

Got away by 8. Got to Guri Guri for lunch. G’s car not acting right when starting but travels fine when agoing. F’s left us for Letein - if they could get thro & since they haven’t returned they must have gotten thro’ alright. We went on to Ollolunga and home & got here by 4. Had hi tea then & a walk & now all are bathing & getting to bed. Talking long & seriously on the veranda. John finds G’s think as he does about the vow and wouldn’t be surprised if something is done about it next Conf.

Sun. Sept. 7

Only 46 out to A.M. meeting. None of the old Christian women scarcely. Naiblong says Nyakeiru attended the affair at Tamenos & that’s why shes not coming to meetings. Susana didn’t come to communion. I’m so sorry but there’s such a devilish spirit here. As we came out of church & even before a crowd were singing and dancing at Oldubois - just in defiance - no doubt. Sitoya feels awful & wanted Jno to go down & make them stop which we had no power to do. & said if we did nothing they’d all leave. I’m not sure but twould be well if we did all leave. Nice mtg by ourselves tonight.

Mon. Sept. 8

These days are going so fast. Kuyoni took a note to Mrs Paterson to tell her we were coming for tea. We went & it rained. We drove to the school to see if Mr Denning could locate the knocking in the car but it would hardly do it at all so he thot ‘twas not serious. Lovely tea then went to Dawsons & got the suit of clothes Mr Dawson offered us for Mr Downing. Hadn’t rained a bit here. Parmale washed.

Tues. Sept. 9

Today they are starting the court proceedings on Miss Stumpfs case at Kijabe. I’ve about got things packed up for going tomorrow. Sprinkled a bit today. Kuyoni ironed. Mrs Paterson was very pleased with her dresses. Mrs G. cut out one of the green for herself. The pattern Cora sent me. We wanted much to take Parmale along but looks as tho we’d have too much of a load. Don’t know when we’ll get back.

Wed. Sept. 10 Lemik

Got away in good time. Stopt for gas and as we had forgotten the ax we bot one. We were pretty well packed. Mrs G. drove all the way. Wanted to get on further but it threatened rain. As we entered the valley the gears would not work & we feared we’d have to return but after pushing it a bit they acted better. We had tea or lunch at the place we always camped & it rained so we sat in the car. Then they tried the car out some & drove under a tree where we are camping. Wanted a big fire & got stumps piled up but it is raining & will likely put it out. Had lots of callers. A large Kraal near by. Before dark a hyena came around & a Masai chased him away. G’s have Clarkes little tent we have our auto tent. They use the auto cushions we have sage leaves.

Thur. Sept. 11

We came on after a late breakfast & the car did well only gears stick & sometimes seem locked. Coming thro patches of woods it was muddy & not being able to change into low quickly we’d get stuck. So finally put on chains. Then lost our roads at the same place we did when Gabbotts were with us. Men got out & looked for it & Jno found it but there had been rain so it was slippy in the track & when we got to a nice shade tree we stopt & got lunch & men looked at road ahead & decided to stay here til tomorrow & as rain was threatening we hustled tents up & got lots of nice grass for beds. Hyenas were bad last night and are around tonight too before dark. Couple miles from the bridge.

Fri. Sept. 12

After breakfast walked down to the Mara bridge took bucket along & got nice river water. had been using from a hole. A Norwegian is camped there waiting for his lorry from Nairobi. Sat on rocks & knitted. Took picture & walked back in time for lunch. Burned my neck & arms pretty badly. Have lots of logs & stumps & sat out by a blazing fire. I read out loud some. they hear lions, leopards & hyenas around already. but this is a lovely camp. if decent water was a bit nearer. It was nice at the river too tho we like it better here. It rains all around us every day but we get only a sprinkle. Finally have all the mutton stewed up. We have enjoyed it.

Sat. Sept. 13 Lemik Valley.

After late breakfast we packed up. Mr. G. had thoroly greased the gears so we got on fairly well. and as there was less packing we weren’t so pinched for room. The muddy places weren’t so bad & we had chains on so had no trouble. Kept on the road too & saw where we made our mistake 2 days ago. At Lemik bot a little corn meal. as the bread is very short. Are camped by quite a nice spring. Can get real nice water. Have lots of logs for fire but couldn’t sit out as it started to rain. We read a bit by light of lantern. My neck & arms are sore where they are sunburned. Lots of folks around here - herds & herds of cattle. Nicer camp in many ways than the others.

Sun. Sept. 14

Such a lovely quiet A.M. An old Masai came & sat down & talked with us while we ate lunch. Gave him some tea which he liked much. Also potatoes that were left & cold mutton. He said he’d bring us milk & a sheep tomorrow. but we said we are leaving. Started letter to the boys but got sleepy. Just after lunch it got very dark & almost before we were aware a storm broke - rain & wind first from one side then the other & G’s tent was open & so some things got wet but got all dried by a big fire. also read a sermon & had prayer. Wonder how they fared at Syabei. Jno had wanted to stay another day but he got a long walk up the hill so is willing to pull up tomorrow.

Mon. Sept. 15 Home.

Jno & I in back & as we had finished most all eats there wasn’t so much to pack. Got stuck in mud almost at once but after that got on very well. Came via Ollolonga. The Ngiro drive is lovely - so much blooming jasmine. Drove to office & got a big mail. Letter from boys also Grace Wight. & others. Guildings got a bit. We could see it was raining in this direction but hadn’t rained much here. tho an old tree was blown down. Had tea & then baths & now Mrs G. is running phono & we are reading the lots of papers. Its nice to be back again. The 3 girls, Etta, Martha & Nolmisheni came to greet me!!! Mr. Probst wants Jno to go with him on vacation. We hope he’ll go to Southern Reserve.

Tues. Sept. 16

Parmale washed big wash. Kuyoni went to Narok with eggs & got meat. The 5 girls came again. They do seem to want to be friendly but don’t know just how. I feel sorry for Nolmisheni. She is ashamed of herself too. Got boys letter finished - but will send Parmale in morning as mails go as formerly. Wed. & Sat. & in Thur. & Sun. Men tried fishing but got only shenzi ones. Parmale pulled out a big telapia but Jno made him put it back.

Wed. Sept. 17

Kuyoni ironed - big lot. Parmale went to Narok & was back by noon. Sewed my collar onto sweater. Had prayer mtg tonight. Wambogo came for the gun. Said the big leopard got a dog. Then ab’t 7 they came with what is the largest leopard we’ve ever caught, I think. Wished so it was light so we could have a picture but feared to leave it til morning before skinning it.

Thur. Sept. 18

Wambogo worked at the skin almost all A.M. Jno made a frame and it will dry nicely I’m sure. Threatens rain & rains some every eve. The men are fishing every day. Made a trap this morning & caught lots of the little ones & we had ‘em for dinner. Jno had quite a number out tonight & they got to asking ab’t getting in the church. Jno said if they didn’t like ours they should organize. So they asked just what would be necessary. etc etc. but thot it was very likely they’d never agree.

Fri. Sept. 19

Prayer Day. 9 women out. Kuyoni went for mail & to see when Mr Denning could work on the car. He says tomorrow. The men will take it . The elders came to see Jno ab’t organizing a church!!! & they’ve been drinking & doing witch doctor work and most every conceivable sin & now want to join a church!!! Jno lets ‘em go on & talk but it gets me all worked up to think of the nerve they’ve got. Caught 2 tilapia in the trap & lots of black ones. One had 22 little ones in its stomach.

Sat. Sept. 20

Baked some & got things ready for tomorrow. Finished Loras letter. Had “Rigoletto” this eve. All enjoyed it. Men went to Dennings & he helpt them work at car but haven’t improved it much. The skin is drying nicely. Took pictures of pond yesterday & Naiyolong & Susana today. Girls were around again. at the boys house. If things were bad 2 yrs ago today [Njoroge & Nareyu had traditional wedding vs. civil ceremony at D.C.’s office.] wonder what we’d have thot if we could have seen this day.

Sun. Sept. 21

Well, this was better than 2 wks ago. Mulungit & Mbaei were out to both services. Don’t quite know what’s changed their hearts. Good number of children out. Took walk around Rim of the World & looked down the Canyon. Had nice time this eve too. Read sermon by Fenelon & sang & prayed. Suppose will all be at Kijabe next Sun. tho Jno doesn’t seem very enthusiastic. I don’t like to think of G’s leaving. We’ve enjoyed them so.

Kuyoni went for mail. Letter from Shaffers saying they hope to sail Oct. 1. We’ll soon hear by cable now. Ab’t 3 P.M. Mr. Kellum, Friends Mission, & Dr Davis & Philip drove up. Say they must go back tomorrow. Trying to persuade them to stay one day. We had had lunch on path to monkey house. & had just got back & not finished reading mail. After tea & before supper Jno, Phil & Mr. K. went out for guinea fowl but got only a jackal. Mrs G. is running the phono.

Had lunch & then the men went down to the pond below the falls. Soon Jno came back & persuaded Mrs G. & me to go down too ‘Twas quite a scramble but we went & enjoyed it ever so much. Mr. G & Par. caught several big fish. All tired tonight. Had prayer mtg & then waited a while for Brysons but they didn’t come.

Thur. Sept. 25

Got things together & packed the bedding bag & took it to Haji Aboo. Got mail & saw Mrs. Paterson. Took the boys along. Very dark & threatening in N.E. but only sprinkled. Likely get more tomorrow. I gave the boys school work & then we got the mail & went to Ngiro for lunch at Davis camp. Mail says S’s arrive Jan. 5. also from Mr. D. word came that the Asso. was calling meeting here a week from today - or rather elders were calling Asso. here. We informed Mr. Roach as Major Dawson is away. Brysons want £110 for car. too much for us.

Tues. Dec. 9

Keshia took letters & brot meat. Mr. C. didn’t come in today so will tomorrow, no doubt. Men went to saw mill & bot the lumber junk. Now how to get it here is next trouble. Mrs Poole says we may use her guest house to live in while we help load the lorries or wagons.

Wed. Dec. 10

While children were in garden I did some sewing for women. fearing we’ll not get all done tomorrow. Had music tonight & we knitted. Elders don’t want school gardens. Told Sitoya they should tell me what they want.

Thur. Dec. 11

I called for sewing class & Bridget came so after getting things started I let her look after them & we went for mail. Got nice lot. Mr. C. asked us to supper. He had topi chops. Very nice evening. We’ve neither seen nor heard any thing of the K.C.A. mtg. but that’s no sign nothing is being done.

Fri. Dec. 12

Mr. C. left ab’t noon. sent up the fish net trap. Men tried to set it. 7 women out to mtg. Seemed so nice to hear Nolmisheni pray again. Finished boys & Lo’s letters & got a few others off. Some one must go & take books for Mr Whitehouse.

Sat. Dec. 13

Baked & cleaned. Mrs. K. says I get things done so early. but with 2 boys to help we do a lot in a little while. Drove to Narok - to dukas. Haji Aboo will bring the lumber from the mill after Xmas.

Sun. Dec. 14

A good number out to all mtgs. Looks as tho they aren’t much in sympathy with Olle Motian & his K.C.A. friends. Took walk this eve & white shoes rubbed my heels sore. Read from Finneys Revival lectures. Mrs. K. rested all day.

Mon. Dec. 15

K’s said they heard a girl screaming last night & we found out it was Nolmisheni. She went to Sitoyas Kraal & her father is giving her to Parkau just to spite Sitoya. So he went for her last eve & beat her. Kinyanjui says Ruth went home & left the baby so he went to D.C. Soldiers are here tonight searching houses for Kikuyu. Mr C. here to supper.

Tues. Dec. 16 Claudon, 1910

And today Claudon is 20. Where have the years gone. Kellers suddenly announced this morning they were leaving. We were surprised but they want to go to Nairobi. Soldiers took Musa. He came back this eve to say he must have 25 S. in 5 days - or go to prison. I told him I’d give him the 8 we owe him when month is finished. Jno’s class told him they want to be baptized but wont give up circumcision.

Wed. Dec. 17

Jno cut weeds on east side of pond & across dam. Sun very hot & he feels rather punk tonight. I did much of the ironing. Bridget was sewing for several hours. Every one wants new dresses for Xmas.

Thur. Dec. 18

Jno was lying around much of the time. Wambui brot mail. Some Xmas letters - $3 in Miss Johnsons. One from Boys too. also Shaffers- saying they were detained because R.M. had mumps but they’d get here by Jan 6. J’s trouble acts like fever. He thinks its sun.

Fri. Dec. 19

Jno staid in bed til lunch. Chaundy came to try fishing. Staid til ab’t 4:30 P.M. J. was up most all P.M. but feels miserable. Has quite high temperature. Pulled phono to bed room door & played it. Gave Musa his wages. he did not find the shillings so guess he’ll have to go to prison again. Barnetts did not come.

Sat. Dec. 20

Jno miserable all day. Major Dawson came for class but sat & talked. He suggested Asperin & that made J. sweat awful. I brot up another book of C’s records & played ‘em. If J’s temp does not go down we may have to ask Dr D. to come out.

Sun. Dec. 21

Sent note to Major Dawson to try to get Dr. D. Jno did not rest well & his temp still 101 this morning. Boys took care of S.S. & church service. Kinyanjui is having shauri with Masai elders ab’t Ruth. Goes again tomorrow. Got another book of Records & have been playing P.M. & eve. Wrote boys.

Mon. Dec. 22

Dr. D. came in at 11 last night. Mr Aggetts man brot him Phil was along. They wouldn’t stay but returned to Quarantine after drinking tea. It does feel good to have Dr here. J’s temp stays up. Slept this PM but head aches again. Sewed a bit but didn’t get to school at all.

Tues. Dec. 23

Just ab’t noon Probst & Skoda drove up. At the same time a runner came with a telegram from Browns asking to come out for holidays. We answered it was not convenient. I’m so sorry for we wanted them much. Dr. thinks if Clarke comes back Jno ought to get to hospital as he thinks ‘twill hang on long. As high as 103 today - down a bit this eve. Killed a sheep.

Wed. Dec. 24

The boys decorated the school room very pretty and had a program tonight with popcorn to give to each. K. said 110 out. Skoda & Dr. tried fishing. Mr P. tried hunting but none succeeded. Kinyanjui brot a lovely beef roast. Such lots of meat. No Clarke. A no. of cars came in here.

Thur. Dec. 25

I got so provoked at Parmale. He staid out all night & then couldn’t work this A.M. & I needed him badly. Skoda was ill this morn. Came to dinner tonight but ate little. Roast lamb. potatoes, parsnips, tomatoes, mince pie candy. J’s temp. a bit lower. music after dinner. The village seems quiet. so we hope there’ll be no dancing.

Fri. Dec. 26

Probst & Skoda got off about 8:30. Parmale went to Narok. He came late & now has not yet returned. J’s temp. a bit lower but he feels sick & impatient. Can’t eat - nothing tastes good. Have decided if Clarke comes to ask him to take us in on Mon otherwise well telephone Probst to come out & get us Tues.

Sat. Dec. 27

Parmale came this morn & said he was sick he wanted to stop work so I talked to him & paid him off. Just got hair ready to wash when Mr C drove up. Now are planning on going Kjb tomorrow. John had a very bad night last night but better today. K. washed then went to shauri & this PM ironed.

Sun. Dec. 28

Fortunately I had gotten things together yesterday. Mr C. went to Narok first & so we were all packed & ready before he came at 11. Very very dusty. but Jno got along pretty well. Sat in front seat. Dr. & I & Antony on suit cases. Meeting here at Davis when we got here at 4:30. Skoda quite ill & Felter some better. We are in guest room. Nice baths & supper & early to bed.

Mon. Dec. 29

J’s temp. was a bit up this eve but he has had a much quieter day & rested well. Mr Skoda had a bad night last night but much better today. Cut out my dress (Korean stripes) will sew it up tomorrow. Wrote several local letters. & Mr Willis who sent calendar. Had long sleep this PM.

Tues.* Dec. 30

J. had a good deal of trouble with stomach - especially this eve. I worked at striped dress. cut it too long in front. easily remedied. Mr. Skoda has hi temp. this eve. J. has a bit but not much. Phil played the phono this eve. Davises sat in our room & knitted & talked.

Wed. Dec. 31

J. pretty good. Getting very hungry. Finished striped dress all but hemming. Some mail came for us but not that that went to Narok. A Xmas greeting from Westervelts: picture of orchestra & also a poem of hers entitled “Our King”. Can’t realize this ends 1930.

And what a year it has been. Seems like nothing stands out so big & bold as the disappointments & heartaches - for we’ve never had a year any thing like it in the history of our 25 yrs. & more of mission work.

We never leave home but that I wonder if we’ll find it alright when we want to return. It just doesn’t seem possible that the devil can so blind & deceive any one - say nothing about those who have had the light of the Gospel all these years. We are most surprised & disappointed in Mulungit. After all his teaching and all the knowledge he has had of God & His dealings with men; to be so terribly misled. And he is not happy in it either - neither are others.

Olduboi, acting at the instigation of the others is making it hard for Nolmisheni & Sitoya. We do pray the faithful ones may stand faithful in spite of it all. Parmale’s heart was not right when we left but I pray God may work in it & bring him to repentance.

J & Kashisha worked hard after the rains & moved the mill but no one will go on with it now & so it stands there rusting & rotting. The elders will have nothing to do with it. Can such conditions go on another year?

If we have failed may God forgive us. Words were not always spoken in love. I know. but we have done what we could to make things right. It seems however to avail little. They have evidently decided not to co-operate with us & it remains to be seen what we can do.

The devil has gotten good licks in this year but “we know whom we have believed and are persuaded etc.” Thank God. “The future is as bright as the promises of God.” J. is well on the road to complete recovery & together we go into the new year “looking unto Jesus”, not around us.
