Dear Master, for this coming year
Just one
request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
Or
any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
The
way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: Teach me to do
The
thing that pleaseth thee.
I want to know thy guiding
voice,
To
walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
And
ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A
happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
The
thing that pleaseth thee.
Tues.

be late.

he rests.
Thur. Jan. 24
Womens meetings after tea & eve. Mr. Hess goes
over for Dr Blakeslee & Miss Truesdell with the car.

Mr H came down to see Dad.
Wed. Jan. 30
We were ready in fair time tho Devitt did work at
the brakes some & improved them. Hesses weren’t ready so
we came down to the corn crib & waited. They came at 2!
then we came on but dust & heat & wind were so bad.
I had to stop several times as I couldn’t see the road. We
had to go slowly as the engine heated so. It got dark &
H’s were ahead & didn’t turn off - came back to meet us.
Lois had hot water & we had a little supper & baths.
Home by 8.
Thur. Jan. 31
I’m so tired today I didn’t care if any
thing got done but we went for picnic lunch & fishing.
Lois took good care of things. She is helping. Washed big
wash. Morima went to Narok. to take telegram. Mr Hess forgot
his brief case. Putting things away. Kashisha &
Oloshongo are accused of breaking into Mr Clarke’s store.
Some one took the posho I had for Ngoto Mondet too.
First mo. of year has gone. We are so tired from
our awful trip yesterdy we feel we want to stay right here
now til Claudon comes. Jno fixed up all tires & spares
today. Dr in Nairobi told him he could find nothing wrong at
all. Yet when he pushes it hurts his side.
Fri. Feb. 1
Baked bread, cookies & ironed this A.M. and
Hesses left ab’t 2 P.M. They wanted to get to Parakatabu but
got off rather late, & they had a big load. Have more
ambition today. Morima ironed steadily all A.M. Dismissed
him tonight & we will get on with Lois only. So windy
all day - sage has dropt its leaves also most wild olives.
Sat. Feb. 2
Rather lazy day but Lois cleaned. Have things put
away - but not guest room things. those will be washed on
Mon. We’ve slipt into our regular quiet life again - &
it seems nice after the excitement of the Kijabe trip.
Sun. Feb. 3
While at Narok School it rained pretty hard. Mail
late didn’t wait. No rain here. John asked for those to
stand who wanted class & not one stood.
We don’t understand at all. There is blessing on other
stations & the work goes on but something seems to
hinder here. God help us. Read a Spurgeon sermon.
Mon. Feb. 4
Lois washed. I rung the bell for school &
Sitoya & Kinyanjui came & we talked about the
program & what books we’d need. but didn’t have a
regular session. Hope more will come. Wrote Aunt Lorene a
birthday letter. Sent Nyakeiru for mail & posho. Said it
rained hard at Narok.
Tues. Feb. 5

5:30 it came down hard. and hasn’t cleared up yet. so hope
rains are really on. Jno works at the road again & his
side doesn’t trouble. Prayermtg P.M. & eve.
Thur. Feb. 7
Got just a little shower this eve. Kinyanjui went
for mail. Nothing much came. Expected home mail but there
was none. A year ago!!! [at Ft. Portal, Uganda on way back
from Congo] I seem to have taken John’s head cold. he’s ab’t
over it. He is working on the road.
Fri. Feb. 8
One week of school over - it isn’t too bad. but
they aren’t very easily classified. Kinyanjui wants to rush
ahead. Mulungit says Lois wants school work. but she can’t
go to school & do work in kitchen so I may just give her
a bit of home work to do. Hot today - no rain.
Sat. Feb. 9
Clouding up this eve. but has been hot today. Cold
is troublesome. Baked a bit - canned a few peaches. Finished
the crocheted part of the bed spread. Now want to make a
foundation of blanket covered with yellow then I’ll call it
finished kabisa. [Swahili “for sure”] Am knitting at Mrs.
Shaffers black & red sweater. Fished enuf for breakfast.
Sun. Feb. 10
Rained pretty hard in the night but not to trouble
the roads. Got very black while at hospital but only
thundered. Mail was there when we got there so came home
early. Spoke with Mr Low asked him to come next Sat. for
picnic lunch & fishing. Isn’t very well - bad cold.
Mon. Feb. 11
Hard rain last night. Cold worse today. Lois
washed. I dismissed school a bit early for my nose &
eyes were very troublesome. Had Women’s League Prayermtg

course then clears. P.Mtg this PM but only 6 out. Very dark
tonight. Thot sure we’d get a down pour - but only a little
sprinkle. Jno sawed & bored holes in quilt frame.
Thur. Feb. 14
Morima brot mail & was all wet for he said it
rained very hard at N - & hailed. Nothing but sprinkle
here. Letter from Lo. Have yellow quilt on frame now &

to card enuf to get the other tied soon too. This goes under
crocheted spread.
Fri. Feb. 15
2 wks. of school done. Baked bread so we could go
on picnic tomorrow. Will bake cookies in the morning. Have
boiled a bit of ham too - or rather bacon. Tied at quilt -
ought to get it done by another day. Wrote Mrs Lindsey. She
sends us Ev. Christian.
Sat. Feb. 16
Mr. Low came promptly at 10 and we had tea then
went way down to the high rocks to a very pretty place. I
had never been before. Caught a nice lot of both kinds. Lois
& I came back early. it was hot. They came about 4 &
we had tea & he went home.
Sun. Feb. 17
Were surprised to have Mr Low tell us a padre has
come to Narok again & baptised a lot of the boys. &
a teacher has been there teaching every day. We hope
he will take Morima on & then he can teach them Bible
every day. 14 stood up saying they want to follow the Lord.
Sitoyas mother among them. John enjoyed class.
Mon. Feb. 18
How well I remember a year ago! [with Claudon,
about to leave for Congo] Lois washed. No rain tho it tried
hard last eve just as we got home. Morima went to see Mr Low
& will begin work for him next mo. I do hope & pray
he makes good.
Tues. Feb. 19
Still no rain. So hot today & even this evening
quiet & warm. Finished tying the yellow quilt. Now sew
around the edge then it’s done. Wrote Aunt Ellen a birthday
letter. Got several ready to post on Thurs.
Wed. Feb. 20
Prayer mtg but few came. Some went to Narok. Rained
& stormed hard last night during the night. and a nice
shower again this eve. Folks are planting their big gardens.
they seem to think ‘twill continue.
Thur. Feb. 21
Fighting headache. Carded at the wool. Want to get
enough ready for another quilt or comforter before Guildings
come in May. I do enjoy the school work. and they seem to
too.

but took aspirin & ate no dinner and it has let up. Very
black clouds but no rain. Letters yesterday from Raymond
& Sara & Cora. and local.
Sat. Feb. 23
Storming hard in the south. Mr Low came just about
9. So by 9:30 we were off. Had a very pleasant day - below
the lower falls. He seems to enjoy such things very much. He
is having a Primary Class Std IV, V, VI so Orkei is going
there. & Morima is going as cook & help the boys in
school too.
Sun. Feb. 24
It looked very dark at 1 when time to go but we
went. It didn’t rain here but on the ridge & air drome
& Narok. When I got to main road ‘twas too bad to go on
so had boys go on foot & we 3 women came back. 2 more
stood for class today. Rain all around but none here.
Mon.* Feb. 25
Lois washed. Very cloudy & sprinkled some but
clothes got dry. Morima came & I fixed up a bit of a
recipe book for him. He says he’s to have Wed. night mtg
& Sun. A.M. & Sun. night. I hope he can do even more
than that. How well I remember a year ago. [visiting
Kasengu, in Congo]
Tues. Feb. 26
Lois ironed. Baked bread. Started to rain about 12
& kept it up most all PM & eve. Not so very hard but
quite steady. John will work in garden tomorrow. Orkei
hasn’t gone to Narok but goes with Morima tomorrow. Wrote
Claudon.
Wed. Feb. 27
Rung the first bell for prayermtg but by 8 it lookt
pretty dark, so we waited a bit & then it came first
from West & then north & when the storms met it did
come down hard. & must have been a cloud burst up on the
hills for it filled the pond & went right over the dam.
Washed the gardens awful. Mr. Clarke came in just before
lunch.
Thur. Feb. 28
Sitoya went for post but hasn’t returned. John went
across dam this morning to see if any damage was done. &
found lots of good sized fish on the far bank - hundreds
must have gone down river. Were at Clarkes for dinner and
music. Just a sprinkle while we were there but none coming
home.
Corn, onions, ndoma & even potatoes were washed
away. Kinyanjui said even the dirt the potatoes were growing
in is gone. It was rushing deep over the bridge tween here
& Clarkes. and went over Jno’s new bridge too but didn’t
damage the road very much. Washed a lot of brush fences
away. Every one is planting now. a shower just at noon
today. Jno planted yesterday morn. but we’d like to put in
more.
Quite an uneventful month otherwise. Mr. C. had
lunch with us yesterday. Got into some rain & is glad to
be here now.

written her. Do hope it will draw her nearer to God. Wonder
if he believed before he died. Hope so.
Mon. Mar. 4
Mr C. called before lunch & we asked him for
supper. He seemed very jolly then but this eve was quite
grouchy. Perhaps he wasn’t feeling well. No rain today. Mr
C. goes to Nairobi tomorrow. Is posting my letter to Mrs
Dawson.
Tues. Mar. 5
Still no rain but pretty black clouds. Elija came
to school & got letter asking to be taken in at Narok.

pretty hard.

bitter all day about it.

Game Office & then with Mr. C. out to his house for fish
lunch. and apple pie. Both delicious. After a bit more
shopping went out to Machakos. Rained pretty hard in Nairobi
- but dusty to Machakos. Found all well here. Miss Zaffke
also came. Donald has done the lion skin beautifully.
Fri. June 28 Camp on way to Lasit.
Had lunch at Mukaa. lovely drive but clouds blew in
so ‘twas hard to see any thing. Lovely lunch. but the road
from Mukaa to Kiu was awful. We stopt before 5 &
got tent up & logs for fire & lots of grass for
beds. so we should be comfy. Cl. in car. These roads are
fine. Corn flakes & bananas for supper & cocoa.
Sat. June 29 Lasit.
Got off by 7. Masai came & brot us milk. The
skeeters were awful in the night. Cl. shot at 2 jackals in
the night. & got one along the road this A.M. I got
sicker & sicker as we came along. Got here & had
bath - by 12:30 - & then I whooped her up - and took
aspirin so feel better. All fine here. Got peek at Mt.
today.
Sun. June 30
Such a lovely morning. Mt. clear as crystal. No
wind. bright sun - like June day at home. It’s lovely to be
here again. The little chapel is fine. Kuyoni spoke. Mr.
Shaffer goes to Simba tomorrow. Took nice walk all round the
place. & had some violin & piano music. The piano is
old but sounds fairly nice.
Everything seems to be rolling off alright & I
suppose we’ll get to Mombasa sometime and that R’s will
arrive sometime too. Just a day at a time & in God’s
time all things will come to us. We’ve certainly had
considerable joy in anticipation & the realization is
all we could imagine.
Mon. July 1 Voi
Mr. S. left early. so we got off by 9. Mrs. Lany
was determined we must stay but after lunch we came on.
Roads are quite good. At Voi we got gas & oil & then
came on ab’t 3 mi. Windy & no mosquitos. No drink water
so we had no fire & no tea. Had a bad bump that knocked
the timing out.
Tues. July 2 MOMBASA.
We are really here! and settled. Cl. worked
over 2 hrs. on the timing & finally got it right. Roads
were fair til nearly here then they were muddy & lots of
ruts. Had some chase to find the key but finally got here
& have chosen our room & arranged our beds. Every
thing has come thro fine. no broken eggs even.
Wed. July 3
Early break. then to the train to meet Scudders.
Then they & I came over here & Jno & Cl. waited
for the boat to come. & Kendalls. They all got here
about 3:30. but not the car for that can’t be taken til
tomorrow. Dad & I on a mattress on Veranda & K’s in
our 2 beds. Have seen only 1 mosquito & that was in J’s
net!
Thur. July 4
K’s finally got the car out & have it here
ready to go to Kjb. in the morning. They are all so tired as
they had an awful rough voyage & were so sick. Scudders
are both feeling quite knocked out. We 3 seem to stand the
racket OK. Had lovely drive in K’s car to Nyali Beach also
around town.
Fri. July 5
K’s got away ab’t 5:30. Have a boy doing washing.
all our safari stuff. He did it fairly well but it’s not dry
yet. We are all rather lazy today. Walked up the street of
our town and bot a few bananas. I’m very tired & will be
glad to stay abed a bit in the morning.
Sat. July 6
We all drove to town this morning and did quite a
bit of shopping. bot some gram. records. Cl. did. so tried
em tonight. Put the gramaphone into our room for this room
is so large there’s such an echo. Did some knitting during
concert. first since Tues.
Sun. July 7 Scudders 2 anniversary
Perfectly lovely quiet day. So peaceful & still
this morning. Cl, J & I went to the beach & sat
there watching ferries & folks. Then I came up & got
fried chicken dinner. Good. Got a boquet of roses for the
occasion. Started reading Earths Earliest Ages. aloud. Quite
interesting.
Mon. July 8
Went to Nyali Beach right after breakfast. and
staid til 3 P.M. Had such a nice time. Men went bathing we
just waded. Picked up lots of shells. Did some knitting.
Wrote Lo birthday letter but mostly to pass around. Every
one pretty tired.
Tues. July 9
XX??!!! I’m one week late writing this. A wk. ago
today while watching the boy at the washing I felt very
tired. couldn’t keep agoing very well. By evening had a hi
temp. and a splitting headache. and sick tummy. Claudon down
too. Took all kinds of dope - slept some and
Wed. July 10
by this morning felt better so got up as usual.
Took a nice long walk along the Beach to Eng. point. Mr S.
got stung by hornets. Music tonight & we worked - I
knitted. Went to bed but not to sleep. Had such
Thur. July 11
a splitting head & this morning had hard chill
& so sick. tried every thing but could keep nothing
down. Finally Jno brot liquid quinine. by sheer force I kept
it. but high temp. again 104.6. At bed time took aspirin
& quinine and during the night sweat like a horse.
Fri. July 12
Yesterday got Raymonds air mail posted June 24
saying they were sailing July 17 at midnight. & arriving
Sept. 4. What shall we do is the big question. Staid in bed
all day & wanted no food. Most miserable but sub. temp.
Dreading the night - & well I might for my head
Sat. July 13
was so bad I sat up much of the time holding it
& almost wishing it would split open & let me die.
All day it ached awful. Sat on the veranda some but didn’t
dress. Read some. Have finished Bess Streeter Aldrich “A
Lantern in her hand”. Am at “White bird flying”. Had music
but I didn’t hear much.

Mon. July 15
After a little difficulty ab’t who should go - we
all went to Mtawapa Beach. for the day. it is on the Malindi
road. A beautiful place but rather hard to find. The 4 went
in swimming but swells were awful. Had very nice time &
no headache. Have stopt quinine. Saw a wonderful cave.
Tues. July 16
Boy came for washing. Others all went across
shopping. I got quite upset because the boy washed 4 konzos
& 2 shirts of his with our wash!!! Had music tonight.
Had very bad head during the night. Seems so strange how it
comes on in the night. One aspirin doesn’t help at all.
Perhaps it’s the cool wind.
Wed.* July 17
R’s sail tonight at midnight. All drove across the
island & down past Dr Burkitts house. Strange coral
formations - stony beach on ledge of rock. rough & has
pools of water. J & C took off shoes & went way out
& found beautiful red & gray star fish. and all
sorts of sea urchins and queer shells. Scudders are buying a
camera & find it hard to know which to take.
Thur. July 18
Wonder if R. feels like he’d eat a birthday cake.
By this time they’ve had ab’t 12 hrs. of it. Others went to
Mombasa via ferry. Sent letter Dr D. abt my head. It gets so
bad in the night I can’t sleep. & must sit up some. it
aches so. After breakfast it is better. Started air mail to
R. to meet them at Port Said.
Fri. July 19

but finally all seemed clean. After early tea we all went to
Eng. Pt. in car then along the beach to Indian cave &

Found out this eve that the agent has let this flat
to some one else for the 10 days in Aug. Mean! We went to
look at others & one is fine but don’t know the price at
all. We are all so disappointed. Did we miss the Lord’s plan
for us? or what. Dad is pulling to go to Shaffers now.
Scudders went to Hospital for tests.
Fri. July 26
S’s tests were nil - could find nothing. Went to
find out what rent was wanted S.150. Nothing doing there.
Then lookt at some bandas on the beach - between Nyali &
Mtawapa but not very good. way out too far. Came back &
called on Dimech where Jno had been 2 wks ago and as the
house is still empty we can have it. He will furnish a
little. but it is small so S’s think they will go to Kijabe
on Wed the 31.
Sat. July 27
Men went to see Dimech & he lets us have the
house for Sh 40. & some furnishings. They happened onto
an auction & bot 35 records for gramaphone. Trying them
out so played late. Mrs S. & I had nice chat this A.M.

Don’t feel like doing any thing much.
Tues. July 30
Mr. S. went to town & ordered reservations.
Have been feeling pretty bum. cough so. Boy washed. After
tea drove to Nyali expecting to go in bathing but waves were
so high. Came home & Jno. Cl. & I went in down here.
‘Twas very nice.
Wed. July 31
Now we are alone. S’s left on the 4 P.M. train.
very reluctantly but feeling twas best. Cl. took ‘em over. I
ironed some things. Not feeling at all well. don’t even care
to knit. Got a num. of letters off for Kijabe. Wrote Mrs
Burgis.
We’ve had a very lovely time this mo. Only this
last wk has been a bit disappointing because it is one wk
ago we heard we couldn’t have this place for the 10 da. S’s
were especially hard hit & decided to go home. We’re so
sorry. Should have liked them to stay on with us.
Thur. Aug. 1
Now we’re moved and “at home” in the Dimech house.
Really quite comfy too. We rented 2 camp beds but they brot
such a large one from some place that we are going to both

Tues. Aug. 6
Washed quite a goodsized wash. Claudon did most of
the rubbing. Went to town this P.M. and arranged with Mr.
Bryson to go to Nyali tomorrow taking lunch along. Awful
windy these days & we are told it will be so all Aug.
Wed. Aug. 7
Dad walked to town early only Mr. Dimech picked him
up & took him in his car. Cl. & I went ab’t 10. Nice

so rainy we didn’t go til about 3 P.M. Drove around a bit
& took pictures of waves & rocks at Golf grounds

wasn’t much to know ab’t.
Thur. Aug. 15
Went to town & hunted up Dr. Allen &
promised to go out tomorrow if it didn’t rain tonight. Wrote
Farnsworths & Shaffers and went swimming & to foot
ball game & for a long walk. No mail. We didn’t stop to
see Brysons.
Fri. Aug. 16
Left by 9. found the branch road pretty rough. Had
a lovely time only I felt feverish & coughed a lot &
Jno got something into his eye that pained him terribly. At
tea time Dr. put something in that eased it. We got home
ab’t 7:30. Don’t know if we better go out on way to Nairobi
or not.
Sat. Aug. 17
Did shopping. Got mail. Letter from Mrs. Shaffer.
and an order to be filled by Hasan Juma. Had swim. early

Sun. Aug. 18
Jno & Cl went for walk to look for beach but
found none. & were dripping with sweat when they got
back. I didn’t feel up to a walk all the way to Cath. so

cranking the car. Went for lovely swim. I can do several
strokes but its very tiring. Wish I’d have felt this way at
the first of our stay - but am glad I feel better now.
Wed. Aug. 21

under the rocks. Dad & Cl. searched for shells, found
star fish but not the big shells they saw before. Stopt
& watched ball game as we returned. Some home mail. W.

whenever we do. Will enquire tomorrow ab’t boat. Swim
& long walk. Wrote Hetz. Reynolds. Allen. Think we’ll
not go out to Allens but do what we can here. 8 yrs. ago we
left the boys.
Fri. Aug. 23
Asked about the boat & it’s not coming in til
Wed. morning. We are disappointed; it will make our stay at
Shaffers so much shorter. We are enjoying our swims so much.
John brot lovely fish for dinner. Ball game this eve.
Sat. Aug. 24
Went to sale at Datoo’s. Got some books & some
records. I wanted pillows but there was so much to sell, I
couldn’t wait. Perhaps I can get them another day. Saw

Well, only 2 more sleeps. Got Brysons at 4 P.M.
& took ‘em to the station & staid til they left;
then took our sandwiches & went beyond the baobab forest
to eat but lots came there to swim so we watched them. Then
ate & walked about a bit & went to church to hear
Archdeacon Low.
Mon. Aug. 26
Wanted go out & see if Blai… [damaged] had
arrived but not knowing … where they were we thot we’d wait…
tomorrow. washed a few things. Clau… has letter from Harry H
saying they’d like… come to Kenya to work. Went to ball…
& then home. Spect Raymond is getting pre… excited too.
Tues. Aug. 27 Raymond arrived
[damaged] Went out & found Blaikies & on
way back … the boat would be in this eve at 6:30. ...we got
pretty excited. Blaikies came for tea … n we went out &
sat on the rocks at … n end of island. watching. first the
German flag was ...up then pilot. boat went & finally
the big … came in full sight. and how beautiful she … all
lit up. Abt 8. R. & S. came down the gang plank so we
could get hold of them. Then they came to our house -
continued in back.
[from back of book] Aug. 31 I think I must here
record the arrival of Raymond & Sara as the record of
the 27th shows. the boat came in that eve - just
after dark & it was such a grand sight - all lit up. and
the band playing was enuf to thrill any one - but when we
realized our own were aboard it was most more than our
hearts could stand. They seemed terribly slow in getting the
boat to the pier but we spied them & they spied us -
& soon we heard a “soba” [Masai “hello”] from across the
bit of water between us.
Blaikies were with us. After what seemed a
needlessly long time the gang plank was down & they
could come a ways down it so we got a real hello said over
the rail. Raymond looked very pale & washed out for he
had been sick for 4 days. They finally got permission to
come ashore & we went out home & chatted &
planned. Then they went back on for sleeping but I guess
none of us did very much.
Right after early break. we went to the boat to get
things thro customs & sent up country. Then they came
home with us. I made mutton stew with dumplings. and how R.
tucked in. Blaikies & we went to Nyali for tea. We
packed up all our things to put onto the train so we could
have fruit & sandwiches only. & pop. Men went down
town to return bottles & get gas. Sara & I went to
Dimechs & returned books & said goodby. Ira was
feeling very miserable & sick. Sara & I in bed. Jno
on cushions on floor, boys in car.
Wed. Aug. 28
Nothing ab’t customs could be done last eve. So all
that was done this morning & this P.M. the Kijabe boxes
went up. and now we hope to get off early. Blaikies
& we went to Nyali. Men drove down town & Sara &
I took back Dimech’s books. I’m coughing & feeling very
punk.
Thur. Aug. 29 Marangu
Got off at 5:30 tho up at 4. It rained so hard we
couldn’t get the car packed. Mud for 60 miles & rain on
the way & car trouble of all sorts. Dry at Himo & so
decided to go to Shaffers if possible. but at Marangu it was
muddy & so stopt at Lanys. They seem glad to have us.
Fri. Aug. 30 Lasit.
How we slept! but got off by 8:15 for Shaffers -
our radiator boils so quickly that we stopt often to put in
water. Got here to Lasit ab’t 11. found Mr S. had already
left for Simba. They had heavy rain last night but otherwise
its dry dry.
Sat. Aug. 31
Dad. R. & S. went fishing. Mr. S. & Clo.
took the girls home to Lanys. So Sofi asked us all to eat
with them. Mrs Shaffer hasn’t been well today - bad head.
Caught enuf fish for supper. Mr S & Cl didn’t get back
til after dark. We had a nice dinner with the 4 black girls.
This mo. has been ab’t the highest spot for us in
all our 30 yrs married life. To have the children back in
the Lords work, and Raymond with a helper, is about all one
could ask of the Lord.
Sun. Sept. 1
Had a quiet day with quite a bit of lovely music. I
felt rather feverish this P.M. and so took quinine. but if I
don’t stop taking that stuff I’ll have no stomach left. Feel
sick always after quinine.
Mon. Sept. 2
Left Shaffers ab’t 8:30 & went out of our way
in one place. Got here to Machakos about 6:30. Mrs. Guilding
had lovely dinner. Couldn’t eat much as I don’t feel well.
Having baths and to bed. Letter here says dentist can see me
at 3 tomorrow.
Tues. Sept. 3 Nairobi.
I wasn’t feeling very well so thot we’d go right to
the Dr. and get Atebrin prescription & then shopping.
but after he punched around at me a while he asked for Jno
& told him I should go to Maia Carberry nursing home!!!
Wed. Sept. 4
Dr Burkitt seems to think we’re made of money.
Guess if Miss Slater were here I’d have gone there. I have a
pleasant room & pleasant nurses but have to keep taking
Atebrin which makes my stomach so sick.
Thur. Sept. 5
Today I got some quinine besides the Atebrin! More
bitterness for my poor stomach. Folks come up twice a day.
Mr. Clarke is awfully good to let them stay there. Nothing
tastes good. I get the needles tomorrow.
Fri. Sept. 6
Folks happened to be there when Dr. came. It didn’t
hurt but was awfully sick in P.M. but couldn’t
vomit. Well, this gives the Drs. and nurses a chance for
experiment but I don’t feel any better than the day I came
in.
Sat. Sept. 7 Kijabe
Let me out after lunch & we started on nicely
til R’s car had a puncture. He got a 2nd hand
Chev 1933 so it’s very nice. After fussing some I got into
our Ford with Cl. & came on got here 4:30. The others
had such trouble that it was 10 when they got here.
Sun. Sept. 8
Dad & I both had break. in bed. Dad seemed sort
of feverish. All the family here to lunch. Very pleasant.
When Mr D came to give Grandma communion I took it too with
her. Went to 4 PM mtg Cl. drove the car over. The boys will
go to Nairobi tomorrow for tires.
Mon. Sept. 9
Dr. went with the boys - then after they returned
he gave me an exam. Says he found a growth but doesn’t know
the nature of it. So wants to scrape & curette the
uterus & send a specimen to Nairobi Lab. to have it
diagnosed. What next?
Tues. Sept. 10
Didn’t sleep much last night. Asked the family if
they agreed with me that if the test came back & was
cancerous - I would not have an op. if otherwise I’d come
back later for treatment. So they did me & I got into
bed but not feeling bad for I didn’t have chloroform.
Wed. Sept. 11
Mrs. Davis has us all here for meals. Cl. has my
bed at Probsts and I have his at Davises. & Sara waits
on me. But I’ve been up all P.M. & went to prayermtg. No
word yet from Nairobi. We hope to go home tomorrow. Drs.
would like us to stay another day. but ….
Thur. Sept. 12 HOME
12 wks. & 1 day we have been away. Got in ab’t
3. No trouble at all along the way. Lois came at once &
called Ana & we soon had bath water & they washed up
the floors for there are fleas down stairs. Then after sup.
unpacked the Calif. box. Such a lot of lovely things.
Fri. Sept. 13
Got pretty tired yesterday & didn’t sleep awful
well but haven’t worked very hard today. Nyakeiru washed
ab’t half the things. I got bread baked & most things
unpacked. Folks up stairs are getting settled too. Took
supper to the pond & caught enuf fish for breakfast.
Sat. Sept. 14
How well I remember a yr ago. [camped at Mara River
with flat tire] Hardly dared hope for this then. My, we are
glad to be here together. Baked cookies. Lois ironed. R
& Jno playing duets. We 3 shelled peas for tomorrow.
Talked with lots of the folks here. Walked this eve. Feel so
much better that it’s hard to believe there’s anything wrong
- only tired.
Sun. Sept. 15
Very quiet day for me. Went to S.S. but the women
continued to teach. Played for church. Cl & R. went to
Narok. brot boxes & mail. Nyakeiru & 3 boys went.
Read Keswick address after having a good sing. It’s so nice
to all be together. We’re sort o’ talking ab’t going camping
about Wed.
Mon. Sept. 16
Nyakeiru came again to wash. & still not all
finished. When we were partly thro lunch Devitt &
Herbert drove in. They want us to go camping tomorrow with
them. at the hot springs. they want lion. We’ll try to get
Dad & Cl off with them & we 3 will go when bread is
baked.
Tues. Sept. 17 Hot Springs

place upstairs that’s cool enuf. Hens are coming off but not
many chicks hatching.

tied up. I’m sure it’s Leah of Gashisha. Kinyanjui worked at
the tires. hope they are “fixed” this time.
Wed. Nov. 13
Didn’t send letters - even so no men were at prayer
mtg. 6 women. One wonders what they think of the Lord when
they can’t come together for one hr in a week to worship
& pray!
Thur. Nov. 14
Sitoya went for mail & also posted quite a few.
tho I shall send some on Sat. too. Had a dun letter from Dr
Burkitt for Sh 50/- So Jno wrote to know what for. Had a
letter from Bertha S. that’s all the home mail. Am knitting

asked prayer for husbands or themselves. Jno & I went
over prayer letter this eve. Got letters etc ready for
posting. Sent Mrs Smith bit of cloth of my dress for R.M.
Sat. Nov. 16
How well I remember a year ago. [Milaun’s first

every one. [Nov. 21, 1932, ‘33, ‘34.] Quite a nice mail;
letters from Co & Lo. Agnes was at Coras & wrote a
bit too. Brot a bit of meat too. Getting letters off.
Fri. Nov. 22
Another school week finished. They pass quickly. I
fear Lois is taking things & it makes me feel badly.
I’ve not accused her yet. but the tea is finished & I
thot it should last thro Sun.
Sat. Nov. 23
Baked & made lemon marmalade & stewed
peaches. O Neills came at 4 & tead & fished. All
enjoyed it. I finished one front & have started next of
R.Ms sweater. School (Narok) is out on the 7th.
in two weeks so we will likely have baptismal services the 8th.
Sun Nov. 24
Everything as usual. Drove to Narok. It rained a
bit. Mail came early so we got back in fair time - 5:30. I
can’t do better when we go so late. Letter from Miss Slater
& from Emily. E & E. want to come for Jan. Think it
will be fine.
Mon. Nov. 25
Lois washed very small wash. Jno working at dead
weeds all over. Looks nice where he’s been. School as usual.
Women want to be examined for baptism but I say none can
read so all better wait. Are reading Seiss “Gospel in Stars”
aloud.
Tues. Nov. 26
A good shower this P.M. & eve. We are reading a
chap. from Seiss’s book Gospel in Stars, every evening. It
is very interesting - & instructive as well. So we are
again watching the stars like last year. School goes on very
well. The women are making progress.
Wed. Nov. 27
Very black & threatening - but not very heavy
rain. Not many women out to prayermtg. Getting a few letters
ready to send tomorrow - then wont send Sat. the elders have
ruled out quite a num. from being baptised now because of
wrong doing.
Thur. Nov. 28 Thanksgiving day - but forgot it.
Not much mail but letters from Miss Moody & Mrs
Probst. & neither says a word about my letter or the
order for butter. Wonder if Nyakeiru didn’t catch the post.
Wonder now if butter will come on Sun. Moody says she is
sending me some of Miss Lovells clothes.
Fri. Nov. 29
Another week of school finished. And Raymonds have
been married a year. Duke of Kent has a baby son a Mo. old
or so. Knitting hard at R. M’s sweater. have sleeve almost
done. Want to send parcel next Sat.
Sat. Nov. 30
O Neills came as expected. They are so regular. 15
to 4 P.M. every time. Brot some vegs. again. While at tea Mr
Clarke’s boy came for key. so asked him up & to supper.
Didn’t stay late as he was tired. Doesn’t know when he is
coming back for the Chief isn’t returning til Apr.
A very quiet mo. compared to many. Have Ruth Maries
sweater almost done. & spent 2 hrs. every A.M. in
school. The hardest thing has been getting the candidates
for baptism settled. It’s so hard to know who is
ready.
Sun. Dec. 1
Found the letters which were posted last Sat. were
still at office - so no butter will come today. Felt so bum
this morn. & really all day bad head-ache & can’t
control my thots. So didn’t drive to Narok. Sitoya went brot
letters from all the children. Congo, &
Scudders. Mr Clarke here to supper. Leaves tomorrow.
Mon. Dec. 2
Nice brisk shower this PM. Hope we get more. Dad
went to Clarkes for A.M. tea. Some of the women are fussing
about not being candidates for baptism. They can’t read.
Some Narok boys are too small. So hard to know what is best.
Tues. Dec. 3
Gathered ab’t all that’s left of peaches. Want the
net over the berries. Finished home letter. Pressed the
things for in Shaffer Xmas package. Am at last sleeve of
sweater. Will send the parcel next week. Very cloudy but no
rain.
Wed. Dec. 4
After prayermtg the elders told us they thot the 3
women who don’t know yet how to read & I said
should wait, should be baptised. and also the Narok school
boys! It just makes me feel “all in” for they do not keep at
all to rules of Mission or Church - as I see it. Jno says
let them decide.
Thur. Dec. 5
Not much mail. but Putuputu says a box is there.
too big for him to bring. So Nyakeiru will go for it
tomorrow. Some of the women went to Narok so we went out on
the road, & just as I discovered I had not brot matches,
O Neills came along so all came back here for tea.
Fri. Dec. 6
The box came, all lovely things. 3 dresses &
slips & stockings & tea set of Miss Lovells. I’m
very grateful for all. Butter tastes good for we were
without for a few days. I envy Miss Lovell these days - wish
I could join her. This baptizing business gets me awfully.
for I don’t believe we are doing right.
Sat. Dec. 7
Mr. O Neill came by himself so was here early &
staid late & took home a lot of fish. They
feared they had to leave here but have not heard anything
yet so we & they are hoping they can stay on. A lot of
youngsters came from Narok. Guess folks here are glad we
don’t baptise every Sun. but they can’t be any gladder than
I am.
Sun.* Dec. 8
Well, there were 36 baptized, & took com. tho
most of us thot they should not. Sitoya got quite angry
about it. and it ended by every body giving in. Didn’t have
com. til 2:30 P.M. The most interesting candidate of all was
Sitoyas old mother. She wanted to be first - so was. John is
about all in. Not so much because of extra work but the
responsibility of it all. And we fear some should have
waited. God help them.
Mon. Dec. 9
We are glad to think of yesterday in the past. If
we did wrong may God forgive. if we did right may he bless
& prosper what we have begun. School etc as usual.
Mulungit went for post. This seems the time of year for
perplexing things. We pray much for the boys who have gone
to their villages.
Tues. Dec. 10
Getting the box for Kijabe packed & letters
written to send. Nyakeiru will take it to Narok tomorrow.
Have tied up and labeled every thing. Most are for Shaffers.
Most all the women at school today.
Wed. Dec. 11
Several women went to Narok as well as Nyakeiru but
all were back in time for prayermeeting. and some of the new
ones took part in prayer. Not many in school.
Thur. Dec. 12
Mulungit went for post & brot such a lovely
lot. And a note from Mrs O Neill to say they were going to
Machakos. I’m so glad they have work. Then our $50
remittance came for which we are so grateful. Also S 20 from
Mr Guilding. God bless him. Many cards & calendar etc.
lovely.
Fri. Dec. 13
Had Womens League Prayer Meeting instead of school.
and have finished school for this term as I need next week
to do things before Scudders come a week from tomorrow. Jno
doesn’t feel very well these days. Stomach troubles a lot.
Got several letters off as Waposo will take them.
Sat. Dec. 14
O Neills came for tea & we had a nice chat.
Brot magazines etc. She is not feeling very well these days.
I wont drive to Narok tomorrow. Sitoya will go by himself.
Baked as usual. O Neills may leave next Sat. Nothing
certain. Mrs O Neill brot a package for my Xmas.
Sun. Dec. 15
Very quiet day. Parkau took the New Bible class.
Parmale was here for catechism - so guess he will be here
for work on Fri. or Sat. He will help us while Scudders are
here. Now Congo letter but from Mrs P. to say the box was
badly broken when it reached her. She doesn’t mention Mrs.
Davises package. so it may have been lost.
Mon. Dec. 16
Lois has been taking sugar again. I reproved her
the other day - but she seems determined to have it. I
scolded her today & said if I found her doing it again
I’d take 50¢ from her pay. each time she did it. It does
make me feel badly. I thot I could trust her.
Tues. Dec. 17
Ironed - and worked a bit at the things I dyed
yesterday. want to make up for Sitoya’s youngsters. and a
tan dress dyed for Lois. Finished tying the comforter &
sewed around edge and all ready for my bed tomorrow. Set out
carnations. Rainy all A.M. but bright this eve. Sent
letters.

said he couldn’t come for his class & Parmale is not

the guest house at once, & then she ironed. But Eriks
haven’t come. Got very dark & threatened rain & was
very hot but no rain yet tho it rained in the night. Canned

straightened up the house.
[from back of book] Dec. 31 Where has the year
gone? It went too quickly. perhaps the happiest year we’ve
had. at least it has held the climax of years of hopes and
plans. God has been so good to us. We do praise Him for all.
To have had Scudders with us. also Miss Moody and received
letters from Congo on Sun. just made a very perfect Xmas,
& ending to this most wonderful year.
What has 1936? It has Jesus our Leader & guide
& that is sufficient to help us to know it will be a
blessed year. Such a Ruler guarantees success if we but
follow. God help us.
