Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary – 1936.                                                                                Index

Dear Master, for this coming year
             Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
            Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
            The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: Teach me to do
            The thing that pleaseth thee.

I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
            And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
            A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
            The thing that pleaseth thee.

Wed. Jan. 1

Thot sure Eriks would get here today but heard nothing of them. Got very cloudy ab’t P.M. time but no rain til just ab’t dark it poured. Can hear water rushing all round. Now J. is glad he did not go with Scudders. Nothing unusual except that I started reading Bible thro & began on Almanac.

Thur. Jan. 2

And still no Eriks. Mail came but no word. Sitoya went for it. We had a hard shower ab’t 3-4 P.M. Now its nice again. Working at song note book. Lois was at sugar tin again. I do feel so badly ab’t it. Talking to her does not seem to help.

Fri. Jan. 3

Decided Eriks staid at Ravine for N. Year & yesterday came to Kjb & would get out here today. but not yet. No rain today. Sun is so hot. Am rather upset internally. Worked at Songs. Made out Ed. Dept. Report. Glad that’s done. Made up S.S. Register for the year. Will we be here to finish it or will Jesus come before?

Sat. Jan. 4

Just sort of expected Eriks & Miss Slater but ab’t 5 P.M. Mr. Whitehouse, Mrs Buxton & Rose Mary & a cousin who looks very like Miss Slater came. Staid only an hr. or so. Mr. Whitehouse will come back for lunch some day next week. A lovely sunny day. Are reading another book on stars & watching moon grow thro telescope. At song book.

Sun.* Jan. 5

Had a hard rain this P.M. Didn’t go to Narok. nor have any classes here. Worked at the Searcher. Lois has been helping herself to things again so I talked to her. She says she doesn’t want to & will try to stop. I told her if she wouldn’t stop she need not come for work. Sitoya did not go to Narok because of communion. Will go tomorrow, no doubt.

Mon. Jan. 6

30 years ago today Mrs. Rhoad & I landed in Mombasa. Kashisha brot letters. Emily wrote they may be out tomorrow. Didn’t wash as it was too rainy this morning. Rained again this P.M. very heavy south of here. Pretty Calendar again from Mrs. Gabbott “Zulu” this time. Kept quiet today. wrote boys but did nothing at song book.

Tues. Jan. 7

And they did come ab’t 2:30. Roads are very good except they found the small bridge out. the one in the valley beyond the hi one across Syabei. Baby has grown. is still so good. They are comfortably settled over in the other house. Have 2 girls along to help.

Wed. Jan. 8

Ironed today. Baked peanut cookies Saras recipe. They are good only I burned almost all of them. Mulungit took letters to post. Girls help Lois so am not asking Anna to come. Erik & Jno fished this A.M. so had ‘em for supper. Felt bum. bad head. Eclipse of moon tonight.

Thur. Jan. 9

John was working in garden & ran onto a huge puff adder under one of the fig trees. Got such a nice mail. and some Gen. Fund money for which we are so thankful. now we can go to N. for clothes & teeth. Thank God. We are sending for car licence. Nice letter from Aunt Lorene.

Fri. Jan. 10

Expected Mr. Whitehouse but he didn’t come. Are writing Miss Slater & think we’ll go to Kijabe a week from today & on to Nairobi if possible. & get to dentist on Sat. morning. Then we can come back on Mon. after Conf. We hope Miss Slater will come with us. This has been a lovely day.

Sat. Jan. 11

Jno & Erik cutting reeds in the lake & I baked then we went to the plain & had lunch under the Oulton tree. Just finished & settled to knit when it began to rain. It came down hard for awhile, but we didn’t get wet. None here at home. but is raining a bit now. Found one little chick dead. Baby Chas. has cut a tooth! Got a bustard.

Sun. Jan. 12

Parmale went with us to Narok. Sitoya is sick. Were ready to come home but while we stopt at duka to load the vegs etc. it rained so very hard we had to put on chains. That made us very late in getting home. Eriks got nice mail. We finally heard from Shaffers. Reading “Hebrews” by Saphir.

Mon. Jan. 13

Washed. Had roast bustard for dinner. pretty tough. Jno & Erik finished cutting the reeds in pond. I cut down the blue dress from Lora. Washed hair this eve. Quite a hard rain this P.M. but the men got some fish any way. before rain began.

Tues. Jan. 14

Two girls ironed. I pressed Jno’s suit this eve. had cheese souffle for supper. Men worked at stones along the road by pond. Mended & relined the little black traveling bag. Jno said this morning - if it rained today we weren’t going to Kijabe. It didn’t rain a bit. Sowed lettuce & cabbage.

Wed. Jan. 15

No rain yet. Jno busy at Conf ex. so Sitoya took prayer mtg. Getting things together a bit. Worked at song book this A.M.

Thur. Jan. 16

But this eve it did. but has cleared now. Sitoya went for post but hasn’t returned. Are packed up. Intended going early but wont rush now so the roads will dry a bit. May not go up to Mission tomorrow. Do want to get to Nairobi by night.

Fri. Jan. 17

Got away by 7:30. Kept the chains on for 20 mi. & it got drier all the time - only muddy a bit til we got up the hill. Were very surprised to find it so dry - even Kijabe hasn’t had as much as we have. Had dinner ab’t 12:30 & finally got off ab’t 3 for Nairobi. Good roads all the way along. Found Miss S & Barnetts alright at Parklands & we go to the dentist at 10:30 tomorrow. I wanted to go to Clarkes but Miss Slater said No she had beds so we staid.

Sat. Jan. 18

Wanted to see Clarke at Office but Mr B staid at Garage too late. We went to dentist but had to wait an hr. Mrs. Sywulka & other Tan. folks there so we visited. Had front tooth filled and all cleaned S. 10. So glad twasn’t more. Jno goes Mon. Erik met Mrs. Scudder on st. but I didn’t see her. Got almost no shopping done as we were waiting too long.

Sun. Jan. 19 Emily’s birthday

After late break. Erik took us to try to find Stewart Watts but didn’t find it then called at Clarkes. & he asked us all to dinner & music. B’s Sr. & Erik & Miss S went to Dr Burkitts service. Had birthday sup at 6 then all but Miss S. went to Clarkes. Dinner after 8 music. Home by 9:20. Dropt the key at C’s & had to go back after it.

We didn’t get to see them at all. First mtg this eve. Quite a number of strangers. B’s all in Ind. house for sleeping but eat at R.V.A. It’s nice & quiet here at Davises. Lots of nice home mail.

Tues. Jan. 21

No programs printed yet. At break. Mr. Teas. called & told Jno to speak at 9:30. Too bad they seem so late with every thing. He spoke well. Mr. Ford this P.M. & Mr. Pittway this eve. Called on Grandma M. also Miss Moodys & got books. & oatmeal. Nice to see every body. Miss Bryden is here too.

Wed. Jan. 22

Rainy all day. Good messages. Mr. Butcher this A.M. and Mr. Guilding P.M. & Pittway eve. Miss Newman keeps having heart attacks - and that keeps Miss Rhodes very busy. Smiths came this morning after spending the night on the road stuck in the mud. Mr Pittway spoke on Healing which has aroused much criticism. tho all he said was the truth. Wonder so when Scudders are coming. Hope we will see them.

Thur. Jan. 23

Meetings all good. Mr Butcher took Mr. Downings place & spoke on “Our High Priest”. Womens mtg after tea. Mrs. Davis served. I helpt with cakes & icing. Having so many guests it was int. hearing ab’t their work among women & girls Many difficulties in all parts. But rather than legislate - we believe prayer will straighten things out. Mrs. Kendall, Guilding and several of us on Com. for asking help of K.M.C.

Fri. Jan. 24

Mr & Mrs Littlejohn and Miss Keefer - they knew R & S. on the boat. Biz. mtg tomorrow morn. Say so mtg tonight. Eriks & Earl go along.

Mon. Jan. 27

We finally got away ab’t 11. but biz mtg had only well begun. Miss Truesdell & I rode with Erik & Earl drove our car. Got here ab’t 5. Some water in the road. for they had very heavy rain & storm yesterday. but we wouldn’t have had any trouble getting here. Miss T. upstairs & Earl in East room.

Thur. Jan. 30

Took lunch down to Miss Perrotts picnic place but hard to get down as the path is washed away. Followed up river & came home past Mr. Clarkes. Played Rigoletto. but are studying stars mostly. Miss T. brot a book & Jno is copying parts.

Fri. Jan. 31

Miss T. went fishing this A.M. & caught a lot. for supper. Seems to enjoy it. I had a talk with Lois. She owned up to having come into the house but wouldn’t say what she wanted. I told her she better stop work & let Anna do it awhile. Anna said she’d like to. Lois will help tomorrow yet. Thankful I have money to pay up all.

Is it possible one mo. gone & I’m still writing ‘35. Now we’ll soon be settled into regularities for another year, maybe. Mr. Butcher, does not think we’ll be here at close of year. It’s very comforting to go at the work realizing His coming may be soon. Makes one want to be faithful.

Sat. Feb. 1

Took Miss T. to Narok ab’t 10. Several went along. We met Mr Bell in Office & he asked us to drive up for tea. We did & then waited quite a while and finally saw she was in the lorry then we came on ahead of them. Didn’t lock doors & one of them had been at the sugar tin also organ tho Lois denied it. Didn’t pay her for today.

Sun. Feb. 2

A crowd here from Narok. for communion but J. thinks best to have it next Sun. Drove to Narok tho not to the school, as most were here. Post was not coming in til 8:30 so we didn’t wait! Had flat tire on airdrome. Only the second in all our trips. Hard day. so many hard things. but have had quietness most of the time. This is really my off day.

Mon. Feb. 3

Asked Lois to come but M. refused to let her. Anna washed by herself & did alright. Only 4 women to school. All went to Narok. Guess Parmale will teach children’s school tomorrow. They want us to ask for money from Gov’t & we wont do it. Gov’t wants us to have girls work! Darned lots of stockings. an accumulation.

Tues. Feb. 4

Anna ironed. Not very well tho. Lois came this P.M. & said her father says she must leave home. Then later J. told me he was told she had been found in a house on Sun. with a fellow from Narok! It just makes me sick. M. is coming in morn. to talk. He’s very angry & no wonder.

Wed. Feb. 5

M. came & said he had changed his mind. he wont send Lois away but if he finds her doing so again he will beat her hard & I said that was better. He goes to Nakuru for a cattle case of some sort. Parmale takes all the Bible work. also beginning women. Sitoya is put out because he can’t teach. We don’t know why they don’t want him. No rain yet but funny clouds.

Thur. Feb. 6

Sitoya went for post & returned early. Lovely big mail - all sorts of letters & papers. Took all eve to read all letters. We have started the ram as it’s getting pretty dry in garden. Do so hope ‘twill rain.

Fri. Feb. 7

Now a week of school is finished. Anna is doing better. but still forgets sometimes & stands & stares at me while I do her work. Dr Davis sent medicine which I’m taking - head aches so much & I feel the heat so. hot flashes too - night & day so I’m restless. & uncomfortable.

Sat. Feb. 8

This eve ab’t bedtime a car came in & went up to Olle Motions. We fear it brot beer for we are told he is bringing it here again. Wish the Lord would deal with him. Made do nuts but not very good - too rich. We both went fishing & got enuf for breakfast.

Sun. Feb. 9

Hardly knew what to do ab’t Narok but felt better after rest & so drove over to school too. Had no communion as we thot best not to & Sitoya too said not to. Letters from Cl. & Sara. Cl had been part way up Ruenzori Mt. & wrote ab’t it. Now wants Dad to come & go up with him.

Wed. Feb. 12

Caught Tameno going to Narok & gave him the bunch of mail I had ready. Another good rain just after prayermtg. Set out tomatoes so are glad for the rain. A big pack of wild dogs were on the tennis court - but got away before Jno got the gun.

Thur. Feb. 13

Sitoya went for post - a good many papers - Am. with lots of things enclosed. Olle Motion is trying to make trouble for Sitoya abt the dowry he gave. that he says he hasn’t given. No rain today. but black. While fishing Dad saw a water buck being chased by wild dogs come over the hill here.

Fri. Feb. 14

School work as usual. I don’t go over before 10. but some how I don’t get much done here. Must do quite a bit in kitchen. Anna planted all the far side of garden in corn. Washed our room. bath & all kitchen. She does fairly well when told. Quite a rain just over supper time. Maitei is trying to make trouble for Sitoya - ab’t dowry.

Sat. Feb. 15

Baked some - picked berries - set out tomatoes, below path. Such a lot of blackness & threat but only a sprinkle of rain. Have told Sitoya I wont drive over tomorrow. Finished & pressed one pair of baby socks for Mrs Scudder. Am cutting up silk stockings too for rug. Wrote Mrs Griffin. Finished reading “Stars in their Courses” by James Jean.

Sun. Feb. 16

Sitoya went early for I decided not to drive over. He brot mail & butter & books of all sorts that I had sent for to Kijabe. No rain at all tho it got quite dark.

Mon. Feb. 17

Didn’t get all the wash dry as the rain came early. Set out cabbages & lettuce. Jno fixed the pipes in garden so nothing leaks any where. We’re glad it’s done.

Tues. Feb. 18

Better attendance at School today. So few came yesterday. Anna is ab’t sick with a cold so said I’d get supper. Then intended going for walk but Buxton & another man came. They say Mr Clarke is coming out Mar. 21 for good.

Wed. Feb. 19

Just after prmtg it looked very dark but didn’t rain til dark. Jno laying stones in the path out thro the garden. Anna did not come today except for med. Nareyu is pretty sick too. Enjoyed the kitchen work. How well I remember 2 yrs ago. [visiting at Oicha in Congo]

Thur. Feb. 20

Just after break. Kinyanjui came & said Nareyu was dying. I went up & found she was gone. We had a little service at the grave. I shall miss her. she was faithful in her small way. We pray her going may help others prepare for eternity. Her husband is not here now. Quite a hard storm this P.M. & lots of rain. and now 8:15 it is thundering & raining again. Sitoya brot post but not much.

Fri. Feb. 21

Prayer Day. Cloudy all day. Had women’s meeting this P.M. and it looked very dark & thundered hard but didn’t rain til after dark. Anna has such a bad cold I sent her home & did the dishes. We went thro the letter this eve. Finished writing Mattie & S.S. Class.

Sat. Feb. 22

No rain at all today tho it got very dark & thundered so we hustled back from our walk. The river is very high. Jno caught nice lot of fish for breakfast. He is laying stones for walk thro garden & to the back door. Very nice when all done.

Sun. Feb. 23

Just ab’t dark it started to rain & we’ve had quite a shower. Sitoya came ab’t 5:45 just as the rain started. No letters from Congo. but one from Mr. Mowll of B & F. Bible Soc. & he had seen the boys in Congo.

Mon. Feb. 24

Very dark & rainy looking this morn. but cleared & is quite clear tonight. Tho too many clouds to study stars. Began reading Seiss “Apocalypse”. Wash dried. John finished stone walk thro garden. Wrote Miss Smith tonight & John wrote Mr. Mowll.

Tues. Feb. 25

Naramat took letters to Narok. Not many women in school these days. all so busy in gardens. I planted beans & corn etc. it may be too late for there were only dark clouds today. How well I remember 2 yrs ago. [visiting Kasengu station in Congo, remembering early days] Did I really know what a good time we were having?

Wed. Feb. 26

Lots of locust birds in the sky. There seems so little to record these days. A good deal of time is spent in house work - for Anna is slow & doesn’t always know. 24 at prayermtg. Parmale had evidently told them to come for shauri - don’t know why they can’t come for praise & prayer to God.

Thur. Feb. 27

Finished the 2nd pr. of little high booties. May send one pr. to Mrs. O Neil. and make another for Mrs. Scudder. Nice home mail came. Lovely picture of Al & Elmer. Sh. 31. came for which we are very grateful. it wont pay all but will help out. Letter from Dr Blakeslee. Will come last half of May.

Two months finished - 1/6 of 1936 gone. Such nice rains all mo. after it really started. We hope we will get more. have had none for a week. Many of the school boys are here so we wont go to Narok tomorrow. Haven’t gone very much this mo.

Sun. Mar. 1

Ab’t 90 at A.M. meeting & 35 or so to Communion. Lovely day - but because so many boys were here from Narok, we didn’t go over. Got very dark & threatening & showered a bit. Nice quiet day. but I feel there should be a Bible class on Sun P.M. & I guess it will continue next Sun.

Mon. Mar. 2

Jno has very lame back. Mr. C. went back yesterday. Sitoya brot mail. Nothing from Scudders. How we do wonder ab’t them. Pass book came from Bank & I have $50. to our credit that I didn’t know of. Thank God. I can now pay Hajee Aboo. Also sent Mrs Probst her cheque. Owe Mr C. for petrol.

Tues. Mar. 3

No rain so watered the seeds that are coming up. Sent several letters by Waposo. The women are not attending school very regular. Gardens take a lot of time. They want sewing however.

Wed. Mar. 4

Threatened a lot but only a tiny sprinkle just at prymtg time. A crowd out again. Parmale always keeps them & tells them something. don’t know what.

Thur. Mar. 5

Mail brot news of Mr. Hurlburts sudden death Jan. 29. Cora wrote it but no particulars. Wonder so what Mrs H & poor Beka will do. So good Agnes is home. Had sewing class. ab’t 10 came. Nyakeiru helpt. Hard hail storm. Letter from Mr Bolding PWD at bridge. Wants to come but has no car.

Fri. Mar. 6

Thot if it didn’t rain we’d drive down to the bridge tomorrow & bring Mr Bolding for week end. It’s dark but hasn’t rained yet. Hail yesterday was queer. Some gardens are stripped others not touched. Ours is safe. Fish are dying - & floating on surface.

Sat. Mar. 7

Baked as usual but it rained very hard in the night so didn’t go to the bridge. Sent some letters. Mrs Davis may be out this week. Raining a bit tonight. Shall not try driving to Narok tomorrow.

Sun. Mar. 8

Too wet to drive so Sitoya went early. So disappointed for no letters came from Congo. Can’t understand. Wonder if they strayed some how. Susana returned. I’m so glad. Got a big remittance - word from Bank only. but must be over $100. So thankful.

Mon. Mar. 9

Saw Susana at a distance but haven’t greeted her. John tried to pick up all the dead fish. buried ab’t 20 buckets & then didn’t get all. No women in school today. Anna washed.

Tues. Mar. 10

Got awfully dark & such twisting queer clouds above us. but tho it came very hard some place. we got the tiniest sprinkle & that just as sewing class was out. Nyakeiru took letters to Narok. Susana called on her way there to get her loads. She looks well. Says she is living in her house tho Ollenaisho has moved to other stream.

Fri. Mar. 13

from Lo & Co told something of Mr Hurlburts death. He had taken Beka to Concert & on reaching the floor where they were to sit, he fainted. Ushers took him to the hospital. He did not regain consciousness but died 1 wk later. Lo was at funeral at Wee Kirk of heather. Lovely service. Agnes was not there. Mrs. Davis had a very painful ankle tonight. don’t know at all what is causing it just started of itself. Some rain but not much. Callers: Mr. Bell & 2 ladies.

Sat. Mar. 14

Mrs D. staid up stairs all A.M. & til after rest. Her foot doesn’t hurt but is stiff & numb. Strangest thing. Baked and cleaned as usual. Rained by showers this A.M. Jno was caught in one. but am planning to go to Narok tomorrow unless it rains more.

Sun. Mar. 15

Sunny A.M. Sprinkled a bit as we left for Narok. but not til we were there did it get black. & because the road to School was newly graded I came back to hospital before rain. It came hard. We put chains on & got here OK but hard driving til within a couple miles form here. Only the paper in post but letters in basket. & peaches.

Mon. Mar. 16

Wash all dry. Didn’t do much at school for peaches needed care & peas to do and as Lois was there she taught the others. Jno & Mrs D. fished. caught a nice lot for break. one nice large tilapia. all caught in lower pools - not in pond.

Tues. Mar. 17

Discovered I lost the tire pump. so am asking far & wide for it. Do hope some one will return it. Shall ask Mulungit to see boys at school if they might have it. Some followed us on Sun. No rain today. Sewing class. headache. More fish today.

Wed. Mar. 18

This is the day the Housdens are to sail. Mulungit took letters but he hasn’t returned here to report ab’t what he found out ab’t the pump. Jno announced on Sun. that whoever preaches has the prayermtg & that we would not attend. So many came there weren’t benches enuf.

Thur. Mar. 19

Mulungit came this morning but tho he asked a lot of the fellows at school - none knew any thing ab’t it. Sitoya went for post & he too is to ask the youngsters that were at the car. but he hasn’t returned for it rained very hard.

Fri. Mar. 20

Another lovely day. Dark clouds this P.M. & the rooster crowed hard. but no rain. Sewing class. Jno & Mrs Davis went down to see what Mr. C. has caught. Mr Clarke took pictures with new camera. Read in Seiss tonight.

Wed. Mar. 25

Took Mrs. Davis to Narok. No one asked to go along so Jno went. He is not feeling well at all. The tire is fine. Kinyanjui fixed it yesterday. Naykeiru was to lead pr. mtg but don’t know if she did for some one said she is sick. Sort o lonely tonight.

Thur. Mar. 26

Asked both Mr. Cs up to supper but Clarke said no he had mutton & we should come down. So we went. Twas very pleasant. Music & all. Mr Christensen was there too & enjoyed it. Found letters when we got home. Mrs. Hargrave the only home one but a book from Lora. & several Kijabe letters that must be answered.

Fri. Mar. 27

Womens’ Prayer League but several are sick so only 4 were there. It made a lot of fuss but only sprinkled. My thorn finger is troubling a lot so I’ve been poulticing all day. Mr. Christensen moved over to the Ngiro. Must be in Nairobi by Apr. 1 so may not come back here now but hopes to later.

Sat. Mar. 28

Sun. Mar. 29

Meetings as usual. Drove to Narok. Only the paper came in mail. Not all the boys at meeting for some were at dukas. Last Sun. so many crowded into the car. I wouldn’t stop today. Saw a boy who wanted ride last Sun. & he says I put pump into car box. Then some one stole it out.

Mon. Mar. 30

Washed. Very sunny & so windy these days. John went fishing this eve & somehow made a misstep & twisted his back again so he walks bent over. Got all mending done. Wrote Aunt A’s birthday letter.

Tues. Mar. 31

Rained. Last of mo. & every thing paid up. How I do praise God for his generous provision for us. Miss Moody sent us Sh. 75.- It is lovely of her & we are so grateful. Last year we were just almost penniless at this time.

They said the cabinet is finished but the oil isn’t dry yet. but we had the chicken dinner & it was good. The green peas were so tender & sweet. dumplings too were good. Ended with fruit salad. Played Haydn records & talked til after 9. Found the hen & looks like it might have died from snake bite. Cleaned up Helen’s grave. Sent lots of letters to post.

Thur. July 9

Sat. July 11

You might think it’s an annual affair [arrow drawn to previous year this date; splitting head & hard chill & so sick] for I was feeling miserable all A.M. but not so bad as last yr. Lois started fire & then left. I baked cake & bread. cooked various things and had bath before dinner. Wrote at Lora’s birthday letter. while J. had had his P.M. class. Letters came. Grandma Myers lingers on but seems to be losing strength. Scudders still at Kijabe.

Mon. July 13

Thur. July 16

When mail came we found out Shaffers had left Kijabe for Congo on Mon. & took Mc Intoshes family along & left Esther with Mrs. Keller. They may come here on return. and Mr des Forges may come out any day. Grandma Myers was still lingering on. Lovely letter from Sara - also reply by air to my air to Aba.

Fri July 17

Prayer Day. Had women this P.M. & afterward walked up the path Jno is cutting. Not very peppy these days. Keep thinking so much about Shaffers. & now that they are in Congo wish we were with them. My! I’d like to see Cl. Don’t suppose they’ll go to Bafuka.

Sat. July 18 Raymond’s birthday

In order to celebrate we took lunch & went out along the path J. is cutting up to the “monkey rocks”. I first baked bread & a birthday cake & then we walked pretty far for he had cut fast. ‘Twas a nice place beside the river & we had a small tin of “Fresh Herring” to eat with roast potatoes. Played “Madam Butterfly”.

Sun. July 19

Sitoya went early. but didn’t get back. Spose the lorry was late. I wrote Aunt A. but haven’t much pep for any thing. ‘Twas nice I didn’t have to drive to Narok. Our thots are much in Congo these days. wondering where Shaffers are. Don’t suppose they’ll see Ray & Sara.

Mon. July 20

Lois washed. Sitoya came about 9. No word from Kijabe but from Shaffers at Kampala Wed. A.M. They were driving hard in order to make the boat. They expected to spend Sun. with Senffs. Then on to Oicha. [where Claudon was] That’s when I’d like to be along. May bring Lasses & Biglows along back. Finished reading Akeley.

Tues. July 21

Began reading “Little Minister” aloud. Cut John’s hair. So cold I’ve kept my sweater on all day. Sewing this P.M. Got quite a lot of letters ready. especially the write up Lo wanted for history. No Kijabe folks yet. Do so wonder if Grandma Myers still lives. My Dept. of Interior is giving me quite a bit of trouble. for a week now. Playing Madam Butterfly these evenings. ‘Tis fine.

Wed. July 22

No word yet so hardly expect any one tomorrow. Got a good bunch of all sorts of letters off. Sitoya took them & got back for prayermtg. He led. Feeling very much done out these days. so am not very eager for visitors. We had our mtg this eve.

Thur. July 23

Ab’t 11 - just after Sitoya left for the mail a telegram came to say we should send a porter that Mr. des Forges was coming. Parmale & a big boy from school went. but Mr. des F. thot best to come by car so all but Sitoya came & he hasn’t come yet. Mr. d. F. is in the other house. Has brot car parts & will get at it tomorrow. No class til Mon.

Letter from Downing says Shaffers went from Kampala to Chilsons & Mc Intoshes took bus to Butiaba. Nice letter from Cl. Mr. des F. talks much like his sister. Seems eager to learn Masai.

Mon. July 27 Sara - 1910

Wonder what Sara did today. Had language class. This P.M. they raised the ram. most 2 ft. higher. Hope that will correct it now so it doesn’t knock so much. Leopard caught a goat - set the trap. hope we get it. Trying to get lights fixed on car. but broke a switch. so may not be able to.

Tues. July 28

Just today we were telling Mr. D. F. ab’t this. Cut the first spike of fresias. lots of buds. Had sewing class. Men have language from 10-12. Wrote Anna Zim. also Grace Shaffer a birthday card.

Wed. July 29

Baked little meat cakes for tomorrow. Did lots of little extras. Got seeds all sorted & put into bags for taking along to Lasit. Wrote Scudders. Mr d. F. fixed up a huge spot light on the car, but can’t connect the lights because he broke the switch. But that doesn’t keep the car from going alright. We keep finding so much to do when we go to Nairobi that we fear we’ll have to stay all night.

Thur. July 30

Left ab’t 9:30 stopt at Narok. Took boy with cut foot to hosp. Lookt at stadium where Major Buxton was. and went on to the Ngiro & had lunch. then drove on up the road toward Ololonga but not far. roads pretty rough. Nice lot of home mail and one from Raymond. Oranges from Kjb. Grandma M. still lives. Car went very good.

Fri. July 31

Yesterday when we were away some one cut & slashed up the century plants in front of the house & some all the way along to the guest house. So provoking. Showed the elders. This is Miss des Forges birthday. Lots of baking to do tomorrow so no picnic. Men worked at car & will again tomorrow. Starter doesn’t work tho battery is no doubt down.

Rather uneventful mo. excepting the many wonderments we’ve had. Hardly thot Grandma Myers would still be here now. Shaffers in Congo. & we don’t know when they go home. It is nice to have Mr. des Forges with us. Jno says he thinks he’s going to get on with language alright.

Sat. Aug. 1

One never knows what a day may bring forth and at 4:15 when I was ready to sit down & knit Hesses & Miss Woodworth drove in. Had expected to get here yesterday but got stuck in mud. on this side Lolgorien. All in the 2 rooms up stairs. Anna came to our rescue for Lois & I were ab’t swamped. Every one very tired so got to bed by 9:30.

Mon. Aug. 3

Hesses got away by 9:30 sent cheque to Mrs P. by them & letter. They will likely be at Kjb. when we go over. Anna helpt well today. got all bedding & towels washed up. Lois has a good job of ironing tomorrow. Word in yesterday’s mail that cause of Mrs Marsh’s sudden death was appendicitis. So sad. Grandma still lingers on. Mr. d. F. caught some nice fish.

Tues. Aug. 4

Our people expected the Veternary to come today to vaccinate their cattle so we held up lunch a bit but no one came. Sewing class as usual. I want to get some things packed but Jno says we better wait. Wrote Mc Kenricks. Lots of colds among the people.

Wed. Aug. 5

Heard today some of the cattle here have East Coast fever - that’s why the Vet. was coming. but the people say they don’t want him to vaccinate. More die than if he doesn’t!!! Cut the big cabbage for it was bursting. Weighs 20 lbs. & measures 41 in. around the solid part. Took 2 snaps.

Thur. Aug. 6

Awfully trying day - every one touchy & annoyed. and the climax disappointment came this eve when there were no letters just magazines. Jno was so sure we’d hear from Shaffers. The ram is still pumping fine so we do have something to be thankful for. I’m at the border of the shawl. Must get more yarn.

Fri. Aug. 7

Better today. Wrote Congo letter this morning. Had Womens League mtg this P.M. and asked if they wanted to keep it up even if we go away. They do. Many have had coughs. Nyakeiru is quite ill. Am asking where I can get straps for loads. Dr. Blakeslee wants some.

Sat. Aug. 8

Nice A.M. of stiff work in kitchen. Late dinner as the men went up the river & didn’t get back til near 1. Poor Mr d. F. was about done up. They were looking over the path to Rotian.

Sun. Aug. 9

I drove to Narok & Mr. d F drove home. Letter from Shaffers from Congo said they were bringing Biglows with them & might turn up here toward the end of Aug. Letter from Downing too saying Shaffers are booked to sail Sept. 19. So now we’ll begin to pack.

Mon. Aug. 10

Nanjoko came & helpt in order to pay for a book. We got quite a lot of wood for Mr dF. Lois washed. Nanjoko helpt her a bit. She doesn’t seem to be feeling very well. Such a lot have colds.

Tues. Aug. 11

Lois ironed. Before they left at 1 they said a big mamba tried to come in the kitchen door. Then crawled around the end of the house & underneath. So sorry we didn’t get it - don’t like to think of such beasts here.

Wed. Aug. 12

Mr. Clarke got back today. Came up & had tea but wouldn’t stay for supper. Kumumoru is out of his head. he began ringing the school bell ab’t 1 & then sang & motioned & then rang the bell again. Went to C’s for music. Prayer tomorrow night.

Thur. Aug. 13

Not a thing came in the post. Susana went & brot two bags of flour. Mr. Clarke is having dinner at Mr. Websters tonight so ho music. but tomorrow night we go there. We had our prayermtg tonight. A Kikuyu women up here has been in labor since yesterday but I am so helpless - I don’t know what to do.

Fri. Aug. 14

The Kikuyu woman has twins: boy & girl! Lovely supper at Clarkes & music. Packed a box of fruit & jellies and another of books. Are getting things together somewhat.

Sat. Aug. 15

Mr. d. F. went to Clarkes to work at radio. Jno went up on path. Sitoya went with him. Mr. C. here to chicken supper. Baked bread & date cookies. made jello for supper. All went down to Cs to get news if there was any and for music. but there was no news for the radio doesn’t work well.

Sun.* Aug. 16

Mr d F. took the folks to Narok today. I finished Chas’s birthday letter. Nice mail from Gabbott, Co. & Lo and Kijabe. Mrs Probst said Shaffers are at Kellers today so we’ll likely get a wire tomorrow saying when they are coming here if at all.

Mon. Aug. 17

Expected to get wire but none came so far. Have been packing quite a bit today. Nanjoko is helping these days & I’m glad. I’m rather “all in” & packing is tiresome business. Killed one of the hens for Jno thinks we better not take them along. Put the fringe on the shawl & have plenty of yarn.

Tues. Aug. 18

This eve we have the wire. Shaffers coming tomorrow so we are gathering things together. They didn’t say how many so am not getting beds ready. Mr. C. here to supper & we there for music. Sprinkled a bit this eve but not much. hazy & murky these days.

Wed. Aug. 19

Shaffers (5) came about 2 P.M. Many dirty clothes so girls are washing. Their second wire telling how many came just after they did! Many things to talk over. Mr. C. goes to Nairobi & wants to take us in. via Kijabe. So Shaffers will go on - & des Forges drive our car & we go with Clarke, next day. Shaffers sleep up stairs.

Thur. Aug. 20

Had cafeteria lunch. Mr C. here & then they all got off. it’s so nice to have this quiet time to pick up last things. Were at Clarkes for supper & music. Mr. Webster A.D.C. also there. Very tired. Sara’s things all done – am knitting at my sweater - green. Mr. C. says break. at 8 - off at 8:30.

Fri. Aug. 21

Got to C’s on the dot with all in order & locked up. Got to Kijabe ab’t 12:30. had dinner at L.H.Ds. Then Shaffer came & said he was going in & they were not going on til Mon. So I staid here & Jno went with them to N. and will stay tho Mr S. will come back tomorrow P.M. with Mr. C. Grandma Myers died on Mon. so as Mrs P. is alone am staying with her.

Sat. Aug. 22

Went to Teasdales for dinner. Very nice time - and very nice dinner. Seems so nice to have Mrs P. go along wherever I go. Can’t find the boys’ letters I wrote to them at home. so must write others. We sat at the table last eve & talked & I got so cold I didn’t sleep well. Will take water bottle tonight. Had gramaphone. Dr. D’s called. also Mr. d. F.

Sun. Aug. 23

Didn’t go to any m’t’g this A.M. but Mr. Clarke stopt as he passed & had a cup of tea. Several called. Several R.V.A. children baptised this P.M. Dr. led the P.M. service. This eve there was a sing with full orchestra playing. ‘Twas very nice. rained some. Wanted to get away early but no one else is interested. Got all Congo mail ready. Postage was 6 or 7 shs.

Mon. Aug. 24

Didn’t get to Nairobi before 11- & then Jno didn’t come down til Scudder got him. Finally saw Scudders. Had lunch at Stepnensons & tea with Scudders. and saw the babe. and he is a dear. Just like his Daddy. Saw Grindley too. Got to Machakos 9:30 P.M. Put up our beds on the veranda. Miss Horton insisted on getting us food - but we ate at Athi.

Tues. Aug. 25 LASIT

Miss H. got breakfast for us - & we got away from the dukas by 8:30 and got here by 6:20 or so. just at dark. Got some food and beds fixed up for the night. Harry D drove our car all the way down & R.M. & R.D. were with ‘em til just the last bit Mrs S & I went with him & we stopt at Loitokitok & greeted Mr. W. & got the mail. saw some teachers too.

Wed. Aug. 26 [damaged page]

Found rather a mess of things her… Ndilai has had girls circumcised and has been drunk & it seems Kulale ha… helpt in it all. Kituruti came back. w… us just for this mo. Lois came too … clear this morning. Bell & Low are g… now. Very rainy tonight. We are settled in little house by lake. home made rope beds.

Thur. Aug. 27 [damaged page]

rain last night turned to snow on the … this morning it was white way down. … d here some but cleared later. Had prymtg … R.M. & I baked & cooked most all day. … are very comfy in our little house. Most every one slept hard this P.M. I almost 2 hrs. so tired every A.M. Expect folks tomorrow.

Fri. Aug. 28

Two guest rooms in house ready & the 2 rooms in dispensary ready. Ab’t 7:30 Teasdales came & Mundys & Miss Rhodes. Mundys broke an axle ab’t 10 mi. before Loitokitok and Teasdales towed them til they found their gas getting low. Then a Mr Williams (camped at the school) went out & brot folks in & left car. Guildings are having car trouble too.

Sat. Aug. 29

My how well I remember a year ago. [rain, mud & car trouble] Teasdales went on to Lanys after dinner. also Miss Rhodes & Mr. S. the latter to bring back his Model T and an axle for Mundy’s. Barnetts Sr & Jr. and Guildings & Horton & Zaffke came in ab’t 7. Every one has had some thing to eat and has a place to sleep & most have had baths. Too many girls in kitchen to suit me. but it’s not my shauri. I do my work & then leave.

Sun. Aug. 30

Mr. S. came back this P.M. so I guess Mundys will get off with the others. We managed to get every one fed & all seem happy. Mrs S. had a bad head all day. better this eve. They are having sort of mtg. but Jno & I came to our house. We’re so glad to be out here. The girls have worked well today. Wrote Scudders. Baby Chas. Barnett is a dear.

Mon. Aug. 31

The crowd staid to early lunch. And we got all cleaned up & sheets washed & beds made up & we had supper then we saw 2 car dusts coming down the hill. Johansens 6 & boy friend & Mrs. Harrison. Hadn’t seen Flossie since 1907 when they were at Rumuruti with us. She has a very nice family. They will be back 3 wks. from today.

It seems Aug. is the mo. that always ends with a bang [line drawn to Aug. 31, 1932, “Aug. has gone out with a bang.”] and this yr has been no exception. How good it is that the Lord is patient with us. He never “bangs”. We little dreamed last yr. when here that we’d be here again this yr. and under such conditions. Well, we asked the Lord to guide, & believe He has.

Tues. Sept. 1

Johansens got off ab’t 8:15. and now I think we can settle down at least until S’s leave. They’d like a little time at Mombasa. I shall be so glad when Sofi goes & I have Lois only. The food question troubles me. Had music this eve. Am knitting at Beth’s sweater. blue - takes long to get 4 ½ in. belt done in single ribbing. Jno & S at water pipes.

Wed. Sept. 2

Harry, Roy D & Jno went for a load of wood & took lunch. We are washing again. Mrs. S. still sorting clothes. They have such a lot. suitable and otherwise. Wrote several letters. Music tonight so I finished the ribbing on the sweater & am ready now for pattern. Want to help Mrs S. mend & sew now.

Thur. Sept. 3

We are so thankful to be in our little house away from the commotion in the big house. Helped some with sewing but can’t seem to accomplish much besides cooking. Lois works pretty well but with others around she fools & fusses too. Prayermeeting this eve. so no sewing.

Fri. Sept. 4

Folks want a picnic tomorrow. but we must have bread for over Sun. It’s bake, bake, bake, & cook, cook, cook. Such appetites. like threshers every meal. But every one stays well. So we are thankful. tho the noise and confusion & rush get pretty tiresome.

Sat. Sept. 5

Went to Rombo - after baking bread. Left here ab’t 10. Got there something after 11 & had a nice meeting. Almost 100 in attendance - over 30 moran. They were expecting Mr. Whitehouse for shauri. Men went fishing & got enough for dinner tomorrow. All very tired 7:30 when we got back.

Sun. Sept. 6

Picnicking yesterday left a good deal to be done today. Roy D. and Sofi were baptised & then we had communion. I read a Keswick add. this eve from the Christian. Every one tired. So windy these days.

Mon. Sept. 7

Baked bread. Lois washed as the Chaga got sick. Mr. S. & Jno went to see Mr. Whitehouse this P.M. & brot mail - not much. Music tonight - we sewed & worked at clothes. Mrs. S. got quite a bit done today. She wants to leave a wk. from today but the rest want to go on Thurs.

Tues. Sept. 8

Didn’t wash today - but ironing & pressing all the time. The girls (black) fool around a lot. Am feeling very punk. like a go of fever. So very windy today. air is full of dust & smoke all the time. Harry D. gave me a very nice fret saw photo holder. Sewed this eve. Mrs. & R.M. packing trunks. Guess they’ll get away on Fri.

Wed. Sept. 9

How well I remember a year ago! [uterine growth being diagnosed] Didn’t sleep well last night - and felt badly this morn. but after I got at the work felt OK. Baked bread today & will again tomorrow. They hope to get away on Fri. Lovely music this eve. while we sewed & mended. But Mrs S. is packing a lot along unfinished - just can’t get it done.

Thur. Sept. 10

The lorry is packed but there’s still more to take along. last things to be put on in the morning. We were just settling for music when Kuyoni etc came for prayermtg. We had forgotten. Manuel was with him. He threatens to beat Sofi if she goes tomorrow. but she’s going. she says.

Fri. Sept. 11

They got away ab’t 11. Loaded awful & even some on the top. Sofi went tho Manuel was standing here. They had lunch with them & may go to that dentists before going to Lanys. We doused the floors well and swept & have beds arranged - and the Chaga man took all rugs out of living rooms & sprinkled and swept. and we cleaned out the couch - lots of kapok & dust. Stacks of old clothes around ‘twill take weeks to get all straight. Very tired.

Sat. Sept. 12

How different all these years have been! Girls worked well today and tho I baked only a little yet doesn’t seem like I got much else done. Unpacking & putting away does take time and strength. Lois is sitting with us tonight as Nongota went home. It is raining really hard. John is making a garden down by the ram. but he better get this one planted.

Sun. Sept. 13

A very quiet day. Had almost no S.S. as the boys came rather late. Kuyoni spoke tho Jno intended to. Ndilai was at service. Greeted us after but left at once. The school boys want the catechism class there as they can’t stay here for it. Gets too late. Ab’t 70 out.

Mon. Sept. 14

Lois washed. only about 1/3. & some has to be done again. Much is very dirty. She’ll iron tomorrow. I cleaned store room. Wrote Shaffers. Lois studied. So windy.

Tues. Sept. 15

Just as I went to call John for tea, Mr Lany & Ludwig drove in. They staid for lunch but left right after as they had to look after some workmen on the road. Still sorting and finding many things that need washing. Lanys said Shaffers left early Sat. morn. so should have gotten to M. in good time.

Wed. Sept. 16

Today at tea time Mr. & Mrs. Stauffer & Mr & Mrs. Schenk drove in. Mennonites on way up from Coast. Last ones are new workers. They had been at Lanys & brot a huge tea cup for Jno from Mr. Lany. Also letters from Mrs Shaffer & Mrs Kendall. S’s are having a good time & K’s want to stop here on way home. Nice mail. Ku. got it. Letters from the boys.

Thur. Sept. 17

Mr. Whitehouse & Mr Wisdom came about 5:30. Expected them to tea but they were too busy. Quite a run for one week. Lois did second ironing. Prayermtg here this eve. but Kuyoni only came as Wambui is not feeling well. Jno works at the ram but it’s hard to fix. Also is draining a place down there for garden. So windy.

Fri. Sept. 18

Mr. Wisdom took post to Nairobi. Girls washed again. Sorted more things but am getting to the end now. Am re making couch cover. Made a mattress. Also tufted the chairs yesterday so the kapok doesn’t all bunch. Guess the ram is finally going now. Lo’s 30th wedding day.

Sat. Sept. 19

How well I remember a year ago. [camping & out of gas] Baked bread & donuts & fixed up the couch cover. Lois ironed. Suppose Shaffers are on the high sea by now. They aren’t very good sailors so may not be very happy. Girls mended camp bed. Jno ran phono I knitted.

Sun. Sept. 20

Had S.S. and Class at the same time. and then John preached. Ndilai sat up in front & then spoke when an opportunity was given. Said he did wrong in the circum. affair but that he didn’t all he was accused of!! I can’t be very patient with him. It seems such a reproach on the cause of Christ.

Mon. Sept. 21

Have waited til 8 P.M. expecting Johansens to come but they are likely at Lanys. It rained quite a bit from 4 o’clock on. Lois washed & I got 8 beds ready. Wrote letters this eve. Didn’t get much eats ready.

Tues. Sept. 22

Bed time & still no one has come. Kuyoni will go for the mail in the morn. I went to see a sick woman at a kraal near by. Wambui went with me. Jno burned the grass this eve. Only some of it. He made a seat in the corner outside guest room window out of the wind. Lovely clear night.

Wed. Sept. 23

Kuyoni went to Shcool for post but Mr W. has not yet returned. So he went around to several villages. We burnt grass this eve. no wind. Johansens came at 9:45 last night. We were sound asleep. All got up & got hot tea & bread & cheese for them. They were very tired. They got away by 9:30 this morn. May come back Xmas.

Thur. Sept. 24

Mr. Whitehouse sent mail finally & then came to tea. He staid til most dark & we talked mostly of the future of the work here. He told us right out that he is asking Council not to send Shaffers back here. There are several nasty shauris in which W. puts blame onto S. and now this one of trying to get Sofi to Kjb on the sly. Kulale wrote Jno note asking ab’t it & we couldn’t reply.

Fri. Sept. 25

Ab’t 7 - just as we were settling for a quiet evening Stephenson & Dr. Allen came in. Gave them the east room. They are in Dr. Allen’s car and going to Mombasa. S. may return with Kendalls or some one from down there. Mt. was beautiful all day. Men talked & I wrote Moody. The more we talk with others ab’t this Sofi affair the more wrong it seems: to get her secretly to Kjb. Maybe she has gone by train.

Sat. Sept. 26

S. & Dr. A. staid to lunch. Dr. A. labeled & sorted medicines for me. Just as we finished Guildings, Zaffke & Horton drove in. They had camped near Taveta. They said S. is going thro here but it is to be kept secret. So we asked til we knew the plans for it is not right. Jno is all worked up & sent word by S. to tell them they must stop. I got excited because I hoped she would get to Kjb. before folks here could do anything.

Sun. Sept. 27

Talking all day and feeling very badly. Very little sleep last night. Wrote Mr. W. what we had been told & he came at once & talked with Jno. Then called Kulale and also Emanuel. Ndilai was hanging round all the time. We are sure he is at the back of it all for Manuel told Kuyoni that N. promised him Sisian if he’d insist Sofi should be cir. Jno to bed after sup. all in.

Mon. Sept. 28

Up before 5 & breakfast a bit after 6. They got away before 7. Got big wash done in good time. Ironed sheets at once & have beds ready for Barnetts. Kuyoni & Mondet talked long with Manuel to get his consent to let Sofi go on thro to Kjb. but he wont give it. If he doesn’t let her go on Mr W. will keep her at Lolopeny til the end of the year. if he can. or til we can decide on something to do.

Tues. Sept. 29

Post came in at 3 with an air mail from Congo “John Ethelbert Stauffacher” arrived Sat. night 11:30. Weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. R. wrote a cute letter as tho babe dictated. Barnetts came ab’t 5. Eric driving S’s lorry. I talked with Manuel this morn. but do not know how much good it did. Am not so depressed today. I believe the Lord has a way out.

Wed. Sept. 30

Barnetts got away before 7:30. I was up at 4:30. They’ve left baby’s mug. but that’s all. Left a lot of things Shaffer sent back & took some of Teasdales things. but some are left for we expect Teasdales thro tomorrow. Jno wrote Ray tonight & I went to prayermtg because with Kendalls coming tomorrow night it will be hard to meet.

Again I can say What a month!! And our anxiety concerning Sofi is not yet at an end. If I had to choose which year to repeat Sept. mo. last or this I’d surely say last. except for the arrival of baby John. That is a bright spot. God bless him. God’s Word has been such a blessing these days.

Thur. Oct. 1

What a day! Teasdales came ab’t 8. & stopt long enuf to hear ab’t everything that’s troubling us. Then they went on. ab’t 9 Mrs. Mundy comes walking says they are out 1 ½ mi broken down. Teasdales said M’s were going right thro with Sofi. Sent word to W. by Ku & bicycle. T’s came back & staid to lunch then left for Nairobi. K’s came at 3:15 we had brot all things from Ms car. but K got the car. T’s will send parts from Nairobi.

Fri. Oct. 2

The men went to Moshi to get car parts hoping that Ms could get on tomorrow but tho they have things partly fixed they wont get away. We are all much in prayer hoping Manuel will give permission for Sofi to go on with them. Tho we are only 9 it seems to keep me busy with the eats tho Kendalls brot such a lot. Mr K. brot a monkey for the children. They are happy.

Sat. Oct. 3

Mr. M. went to Lolopeny for permits & took Sofi along so she could tell Mr. W. her words. Manuel was there too. The church elders will take it up with him tomorrow. Baked cake & corn bread. So much fruit on hand that we have salad every night. It’s lovely. Don’t sleep well. This Sofi affair is hard to understand. Why didn’t they send her by train?!!!

Sun. Oct. 4

Tho Ngatia & Kuyoni talked long with Manuel he wouldn’t give his consent. So she is to stay with us. Just the thing we told Shaffers we did not want. Dad was just so nervous he went for a long walk & asked Kuyoni to speak. Mrs K & I took walk & had a nice talk but found no girls here & no supper ready when we returned. They came later. I had given per. to go to Wambuis.

Mon. Oct. 5

I was up before 3 but awake since midnight. They all got away by 5. So we’ve had a long day of it. Found that the girls asked to go to Wangori instead of Wambui - & her village is far away. So that’s the explanation. School started but only few there. Hope for more. I’ll do nothing this week. but next we’ll have sewing. Raining pretty hard tonight. Post came.

Tues. Oct. 6

Cleaned all rooms good & have 2 beds ready. Baked bread too. Lois ironed. Mr. Whitehouse came to tea. Rained a bit. Noongota will not work here any more. Manuel wants Sofi now. Don’t know but that we will let her go - perhaps next week. She says he has no words now ab’t cir.

Wed. Oct. 7

Jno killed one of the ducks today - not fat at all. Washed again this A.M. mostly the things Shaffers sent back from the coast. Washed hair & copied 40 Texts to teach in S.S. Haven’t gone to school at all. Kuyoni carries on. How very well I remember all the past years. Wonder if Stephenson will be here tomorrow night.

Thur. Oct. 8

Lois ironed. I wrote letters - Probst, Truesdell & Blakeslee. Had prayer m. this eve but tho it’s 8 P.M. no one has come yet. Sofi got the seeds out of the large kapok mattress. Want to tie it tomorrow if possible. Boiled the stuffed duck all day & it is tender this eve. Dad working at spring for drink water. beginning to wall it up.

Fri. Oct. 9

No one came last eve so sent Kuyoni on bicycle with the letters. but Stephenson & the people he was with overtook K. on the road & S. wrote a note back from Lolopeny that the folks didn’t want to stop. Mr W. came this eve & wants J. to go with him to Mawenzi gorge tomorrow for week end. Decided he’d go - tho may not come back with W.

Sat. Oct. 10

Mr. W. came ab’t 12 & lunch was ready so they got away by 1. Hope they found a nice camp. I knitted this P.M. for quite a while. The girls sleep in here tonight. one on couch & one on camp bed. We read & prayed together after I wrote a letter - so it’s rather late.

Sun. Oct. 11

Very dark & cloudy all A.M. & I’ve been feeling sorry for the folks in camp but about 10 the clouds lifted a bit & we saw sunshine beyond so perhaps they were above the clouds. Hope so. A fairly good no. out. tho not so many as last Sun. Girls &I had a sing tonight & then read & prayed.

Mon. Oct. 12

The men both came in about 10:30 tired & dirty but happy. for they’d had a very nice time. They were above the clouds yesterday morning. & enjoyed a gorgeous sun rise. I went to school this P.M. had sewing.

Tues. Oct. 13

Some strangers called today asking the way to Loitokitok! Rained a bit this eve. but more toward the Mt. The sun on the hills to the east was wonderful. Saw some we’d never seen before. Post came Air mail from Sara. She was sitting up a bit. Babe was 11 days old. all fine. Cl was there in a car he bot from Miss Love. Other letters local only.

Wed. Oct. 14

Sent quite a bunch of letters by Manuel. Later the man who brot mail came & said he was returning were there letters? Was at school for long sewing. Intended doing it all but Kuyoni came. Another week he may go to villages. Jno planted potatoes in his lower garden.

Thur. Oct. 15

Got very cloudy last eve & rained at the Mt. & tonight when in prayermtg it came down pretty hard & as I feared ‘twould leak I came home. The it soon stopt. I knitted at blue sweater this P.M. Another go & I’ll have the back done. Baked this morn. Are sort of planning to go fishing on Sat.

Fri. Oct. 16

Did a bit of baking & cleaning. Had sewing as well as the whole school work as Kuyoni had to go to Mondet’s wife’s village to shauri. ‘Twas so hot in the building I felt withered this eve.

Sat. Oct. 17

We went fishing right after break. Lois went too. straight down past Kulale’s & on the Lolopeny path. Jno caught 2. one large & one smaller. & then could not get any more. We had ‘em for supper with plain boiled rice. Good. & I got a lot of knitting done. So did Lois.

Sun. Oct. 18

Fairly good crowd out. Kuyoni’s class is getting bigger & bigger. Took walk before supper to the crossing to see if we could get across with the car. Just ab’t dark Mr W. came bringing medicines. & told us he was going to Narok next Mon. Post came. S. 11-+ So grateful. Mr W. sent big piece of meat. Yum. good.

Mon. Oct. 19

Lois washed. There were games at Lolopeny today so most of the school children went & we had no school. Mondet is having trouble about his wife. Jno wrote to the father to ask if he’d come for shauri - & he said he’d come tomorrow.

Tues. Oct. 20

Shauris - a plenty. At noon it had been agreed that Mondet’s wife is to go live with him. Then this eve all was upset again by the father saying if M. can’t take care of his Mother he can’t take care of a wife. & when he gets his Mother here then the wife will come live with him.!!! Too bad.

Wed. Oct. 21

Mondet went to get his wife but tho the father had consented last eve now he says M. must bring some beer! & yesterday he proudly told us he was of the Scotch Church. Not A.I.M. Jno is improving around the pond. at the top he has leveled it & planted bananas. Caught the ducks & put em in the chicken pen.

Thur. Oct. 22

When I went to school to fix up schedule found a man had been here & left nice lot of mail. All unexpected. A letter from Cl. as well as several others. Glad for all. Am getting a lot ready for Mr W. to take on Mon. Will send ‘em Sun. by the boys.

Fri. Oct. 23

This eve another bunch of letters came. One from Mr. Downing - abt the action of the Council concerning Shaffers return here. Jno wrote to Mr. W. & sent this letter of Mr D’s. I asked Mr W. to come for tea tomorrow & we’d give him a fish.

Sat. Oct. 24

Went fishing - 4 mi. at least. Came back by 2:30 & had 7 fish. 3 big ones. Tired too. Note came from W. saying he’d come tomorrow for fish supper. & ans. Mr D’s letter saying he has never said S’s shouldn’t return. Then what did he say? Girls writing letters - me too. Jno went to bed at 7.

Sun. Oct. 25

Meetings as usual. Good attendance from the school. Mr. W. came about 4:30. Came from Rombo and had 5 moran with him who are going to Narok for the opening of the Stadium. He leaves tomorrow too - took a lot of letters along. some to post & some for Syabei folks. Kept fish nicely by putting in wet cloth.

Mon. Oct. 26

Lois washed. The dam has broken thro so we’ve ditched the pond empty. & he’ll fix things up tomorrow. Tried to catch the duck that returned to pond after I had ‘em shut up with the chickens but couldn’t get it. J. has worked too hard today. School children in gardens no sewing.

Tues. Oct. 27

Ab’t 2 P.M. the Dist. Officer from Moshi drove in. We had tea. He had been at Lolopeny but finding no one there called here. Just to greet Shaffers & found us instead. Then this eve it rained very hard. leaks thro in several places. J. cemented box so hope the pond will fill tomorrow. Caught & killed duck.

Wed. Oct. 28

Just before supper Mr. & Mrs Ford drove in, on their way to Kaloneni, where Mr. F. is to rest & get treatments for kidney trouble. They are tired so we didn’t stay up late. We are trying to persuade them to stay here tomorrow. Children worked in gardens. Rains are coming. - so the people say.

Thur. Oct. 29

Fords had torn the fan belt so took ours & got away for Marangu & Voi about 8:30. I hope we wont need our car before we get one. They expect to stay with Williams - C.M.S. Voi - tonight & go to Kaloleni tomorrow. Got post yesterday.

Fri. Oct. 30

Washed bedding and sort of laid things out for beds for Congo folks who we thot would be up tomorrow but instead they came ab’t 7 this eve. Mr & Mrs Dix & 3 children and Mr & Mrs. Miller & Miss Brown. They helped fix up beds and we got some supper. They couldn’t decide tho if they should stay over Sun. or go on. They can’t cross (over)

Sat. Oct. 31

Lake before the 19th so have plenty of time. Jno took all but Mrs Dix & me out to the top of the pointed hill. All back for dinner. I baked some & cleaned. They brot butter I asked for and donated from their chopbox so we’ll get on alright. They like sweet potatoes & we have a few. tho they are just finished in garden.

We thot we’d be very alone this mo. but had plenty around both at beginning and end and a few calls from Mr. Whitehouse between & the Official from Moshi so there’s been plenty of excitement. Haven’t done a lot of work but accomplished a little & hope we have been faithful in the work of the Lord.

Sun. Nov. 1

Managed to get enuf to eat for all. and attended & helpt at A.M. services. Good lot here from Lolopeny - & all hurried home as they said it would rain & it did this eve. Came down pretty hard for awhile but not enuf to make roads bad. Want break at 5.

Mon. Nov. 2

They had break at 5 and got away about 6. Heavy clouds still this morning but they parted for a bit on the Mt. side so they saw the snow way down the sides. Hope they got to Machakos alright. They were well packed. I sent R & S a lb. of butter & a letter. Wrote Cl’s letter this eve & will post as they don’t see him. Only a sprinkle of rain today.

Tues. Nov. 3

Election Day in the States wish we had a radio now. 14 sheets in the wash - but we didn’t iron all. I finished ironing after they went to school. Kuyoni wants to stop his teaching as there’s lots of planting to do. So I’ll look after school. but the children want to plant too. Talked with girls ab’t food & decided to give them cents & they buy.

Wed. Nov. 4

So Sofi went to Lolopeny to buy things. Took letters to post & brot mail. Mr. W. not yet back. Rained hard last eve and during the night. Roof leaks in a number of places. Cloudy today but no rain here. S said rained hard at Lolopeny. Children worked in gardens after scripture verses.
Writing letters.

Thur. Nov. 5

Jno ditched at front & trimmed flowers. I sowed sweet peas and also others in garden. Rained a bit this eve. Am getting Als birthday letter off & Xmas to all. Asked a man this eve if Mr. W. is back yet & he said no. Raining very hard now. No pr. mtg. Getting Als birthday & Xmas letter off.

Fri. Nov. 6

Raining a bit again. Early this morn. some warriors and Noongota’s Mother were at the door. She trying to tell me not to let them take her (N). I didn’t know she had come early & was in the girls room hiding from them. Later her father came & pretended to be very angry but after the warriors left he talked to N. & she went with him but is here for the night as her mother said she should stay a few days.

Sat.* Nov. 7

Noongota worked a bit then left but was around all day with the girls. Tonight she is sleeping with Kasoni - against my wish - I knew nothing of it. I fear this affair of giving the girls the cents for their food is not good. Sofi seems to want nothing but meat & rice these days. Lois is faring pretty badly for Sofi goes away much of the time. Letter from Whitehouse & some meat. He’ll come soon.

Sun. Nov. 8

Noongotas mother came early this morn & wanted to make N. go home with her. Finally she said if N. would stay & help her she would protect her so N. went but attended services. Sofi has been awful today. hasn’t been here all day. nor this eve. but goes someplace every day to drink soup. That’s got to stop tomorrow. Church elders had meeting today when many things were discussed.

Mon. Nov. 9

Quite a nice shower at supper time. I took school all P.M. but tomorrow Kuyoni wants their help again. Every thing is getting lovely & green. Lois washed. John got something into his eye & it is very painful but I cant find any thing. He went to bed at dark. I’ve gotten several letters ready to post. Made 10 copies of general letter.

Tues. Nov. 10

Rainy til ab’t A.M. tea time. Children helpt in gardens. Church gardens are a real problem these days. Lots of work to be done and no one to do it - but Chaga & they all cost too much to make much profit. Kuyoni expected Mr. W. but it rained too hard. Partridges are eating so much of the seed. Many enemies of all sorts.

Wed. Nov. 11

Went to a nearby kraal to see a woman who had run a stick into her ankle - couldn’t do much as I had no permanganate. Will put some in tomorrow. Noongota came saying she wanted to go to Lolopeny to ask Mr. Whitehouse to stop the warriors troubling her. Sofi went with her they took letters to post & were to bring mail but haven’t returned. Guess they wont get her to go again.

Thur. Nov. 12

Mother of N. came twice this A.M. and also Manuel. Girls came ab’t 11:30. Manuel had met them on the road & struck Sofi. They said they waited til after 4 P.M. as Mr. W. told them to do & then Ngatia kept them over night. No mail was in. Mr. W. also wrote that post hadn’t come. Mother of N. wants her to stay at home but W. told her to go to Kulales til they can do something about it.

Fri. Nov. 13

Well this is the 13th & not very unlucky for the woman that ran a stick into her ankle for I took it out this morning in 2 pieces - ‘most 2 in. long - the longest. Noongota went home to sleep but was back early & staid all day & tonight. Kuyoni will see the mother & arrange to let her stay here for small wage. Post came. Books for school.

Sat. Nov. 14

Looked for Mr W. but he didn’t come. And it isn’t raining either. Wanted to go for wood. We put a rope on for fan belt & was backing when the engine locked & tho we worked & pushed we couldn’t get it agoing. Jno went to look where the best place is. Kulale & father Noongota wanted to see J. but he was out. They’ll come tomorrow at noon.

Sun. Nov. 15

Had communion. I had a sing with the girls this P.M. & read from Daniel. Kulale & father of N. did not come. Mr. W. did but not for tea. He is watching for lions not far away. No rain yet.

Mon. Nov. 16

Jno thot in the night ab’t putting crank in & kicking it off & so he got it unlocked & he & I went for wood. Got very tired as it is heavy work. Just as we stopt to begin loading, it smelled hot & smoke came from the gear box. I opened & found it quite dry & hot. Put in oil and all seems alright. So glad to have the wood here.

Tues. Nov. 17

Dad wanted to go for more wood as it hasn’t rained. but I had bread agoing so couldn’t. He worked at spring all day but can’t raise it up. Rather discouraged.

Wed. Nov. 18

Today we did go for wood girls & all. Cut a big tree that was hollow inside & brot it all down in two loads. Now there’s a plenty here to last til Jan. or later. Thot we’d get mail today but none yet. May have to send for it. No rain sun so hot. Very tired tonight.

Thur. Nov. 19

Still no mail & so asked Kuyoni for a chaga to go. Threatens to rain & clouds bank up against the mt. but we get none. How well I remember former years. Especially 2 yrs. ago. [Siyabei missionaries in uproar over Milaun’s psychotic behavior.]

Fri. Nov. 20

Wonder if Arthur Fords landed today. Indian lorry drove in ab’t 3 & brot a big bunch of mail & as they had potatoes I bot a bag. A small remittance came. So thankful. Had potatoes for supper. such a treat. Have big bunch of letters for the post. Lois goes tomorrow & will take them.

Sat. Nov. 21

Got rooms all ready but no Fords have come yet. Many things might have happened to keep them. Baked & Sofi cleaned. Lois got back early. Mr. W. expects guests next week end so asks us for over Dec. 5.

Sun. Nov. 22

Meetings as usual. Last night when running the phono, I put on records that came from Eng. Shaffers made ‘em. Greetings to the Masai here. I thot Sofi’s eyes would pop out. She was ready to cry. Then today after service I took them over & played for all & how pleased they all were. Some said they wanted to write them. I told them I’d send all letters.

Mon. Nov. 23

Tonight Fords came about 7. Arthur looks natural. His wife goes to the hospital end of Jan. They are staying tomorrow so she can rest a bit. They are all tired for they came from Kaloleni today. Brot butter & a lovely pine apple.

Tues. Nov. 24

The Mrs. Fords did a bit of sewing but mostly just lying around resting. I baked pie & bread. Lois ironed. Sofi kept Mahoo with Njenga. Raining this eve. Did during the night last night too. Not enuf to make it muddy. Jno tried to show them giraffe but tho they walked far, they saw none.

Wed. Nov. 25

They got away by 6 - or a bit after. The Mts. were lovely most all day. Didn’t sleep much after 2:30. Jno rather discouraged about the spring. He gets a nice lot then it disappears - finds its way out & his garden is getting so wet. Lois washed bedding & their clothes.

Thur. Nov. 26

Haven’t mail yet. Kuyoni works so hard in gardens - & has quite a lot of Chaga helping but no rain yet. Jno is getting lots of water now and has big hopes of running the ram. At least lots of nice drinking water. Lois ironed. Prayermtg this eve.

Fri. Nov. 27

Wonder if Clarke has his birthday card. Kuyoni went to Lolopeny but no post had come. but brot a letter from Whitehouse to say the Rev. Harry Low who was here last year met with a flying accident & was killed. We are sorry for he was such a nice fellow. Sorry for his Mother & folks. Whitehouse expects the P.C. Vidal & family over Sun.

Sat. Nov. 28

Mr W. brot the Vidals (Mr & Mrs & little Andrew & the Governess to tea but they didn’t stay long afterward for they wanted to see elephants near Rombo. as they returned it was raining quite hard. Had a heavy rain ‘tween here & school before they came. Were so glad for every bit. & hope for more. No mail has come this week but it will be in Mon.

Sun. Nov. 29

Several boys handed me letters to send on to Shaffers. Wonder how Raymonds are celebrating. Wrote Mrs. Woodley. After our little P.M. meeting Jno & I went for walk & found some beautiful wild flowes like gloxinias - deep purple.

Mon. Nov. 30

Kuyoni took school so I had sewing only. and just as I was ready to go over, the mail came. Such a lot. One from Cl. saying R. wrote they couldn’t come for Xmas. Cl. had received pictures of baby but we haven’t yet. Acct. of Mr Lows accident is in paper. Flying alone & something must have gone wrong for the plane was burned & Mr Low still in the seat.

We do not yet know about going to Conf. Jno doesn’t want to but if money comes we’ll take it as the Lords will for us to go. Doesn’t seem possible the year is so nearly done. Parmale writes there’s trouble with “oloirirua”- Mother of Sitoya & 2 boys.

Tues. Dec. 1

There was a shauri under the tree & I sent word that when they finish they should come & hear Mr. S’s greeting & about 50 came & were very pleased to hear his familiar voice. Washed my hair. Something wrong between the girls - they don’t speak to each other while they are working tonight. Sending letters again.

Wed. Dec. 2

Kuyoni went to Lolopeny with more letters to post. How well I remember a year ago. [Trying to decide what to do about baptism candidates who are too young or can’t read.] Haven’t just that sort of trouble now but there’s still a plenty. We pray much for the folks at Syabei. I took school all P.M. but Kuyoni was back just as we were out. Getting a few more home letters off. Hope stamps come in next post.

Thur. Dec. 3

Indian brot things I’d ordered from Moshi. Sh. 30- altogether. I got a bit of cash too. Jno has the spring all closed in & running nicely thro a trough so every one can get without contaminating the water but the ram wont go. It’s all filled up with blanket moss. So next to do is to clean it out. My how we need rain. afraid things will all dry up.

Fri. Dec. 4

Kuyoni says elephants were in the gardens last night. Trampled & ate some beans but didn’t do much damage. We thot we might be going to Lolopeny for the week end but a letter came this eve saying 2 Officials were there. Would we come next week instead.

Sat. Dec. 5

Baked some & cleaned. Manuel asked if Sofi could take Mahoo to Lolopeny to see ab’t med. or what can be done for her. she complains a lot. Mr. W. answered & said he thot ‘twas mostly constipation gave her mineral oil & said fruit when possible & plenty of exercise.

Sun. Dec. 6

Quite a num. down from school. Ran the Shaffer records again. Have calls for them every other day or so. School boys all leave on Wed. also the teachers. Then I spose our Sun. services will be pretty slim. Had PM gathering for the girls.

Mon. Dec. 7

Manuel asked to have Sofi help Mahoo get wood & they went to Pauls village & were away all day & then on way back Mahoo comes sauntering in asking Lois to come out & help & then it wasn’t much of a load! I just can’t understand Sofi. She gets ahead of me every time. I’m not saying anything to her tonight. Letters ready to post tomorrow. Rain last nite & Mts white way down.

Tues. Dec. 8

Ndilai came this eve when Jno had gone to bed & said the elephants are near here again. and I think wanted the gun - but Jno refused to give it to him. Sofi knows she did wrong but I’ve not said any thing to her. A lovely big mail came. 2 letters from Raymond pictures of baby. Also one from Flossie saying they 6 were coming & 2 friends, the 23rd. to 28.

Wed. Dec. 9

Bad head during the night & til PM but alright now. Noongota has come to spend the night. as her mother beat her for coming to school. We shall see tomorrow. Elephants went into gardens below Kulales house & he shot at them & frightened them away. Guess Kuyoni talked to the school for Sofi seems penitent & obedient.

Thur. Dec. 10

Mother of Noongota came & said she must come home or the father will beat her the mother. She went & was not back for school. K. says the father is not here & that it’s the Mother who is to blame. We shall see what can be done for they promised to let her come to school. Prayermtg tonight.

Fri. Dec. 11

Mail brot word of $85. sent & $20 some time ago makes 105. We just finished lunch when Mr Stephenson & 3 others drove in from Marangu to Nairobi. Wanted tea & chatted a bit but went on. Mr S. had gotten a new chassis in Mombasa for their caravan work. They’ll be back here ab’t the 22. Then Mr. Whitehouse drove in with mail & then went on to Rombo & stopt for supper. He says the king has abdicated the throne - for the twice divorced woman!!! Guess we’ll go to Conf.

Sat Dec. 12

Strange but Mr W. said nothing about our coming there for the week end. He is very busy & very nervous. Shall be glad to see him get away for Xmas. Such a nice rain this P.M. The elders were having a shauri under the tree & came here when it rained & then asked for S’s records which I played again & again.

Sun. Dec. 13

There were at least 30 to church & SS this morning. That’s not so bad when there are no School boys. K. preached. John says he does not want to go to Conf. even if there is money now to go. I wont say any thing more about it & we’ll wait til nearer time. tho Mrs Johansen says Gordon would love to drive us up. Perhaps J will change his mind & go.

Mon. Dec. 14

Noongota again spends the night here as they are troubling her about piercing her ears - etc. We are beginning to practice games for Xmas. Can’t get up much excitement tho there are such a few. The elders want to buy an ox & we will help if they get one but only to the extent of Sh. 10. Jno is draining the pond. Also went to see ab’t road to river.

Tues. Dec. 15

Father & Mother of Noongota came this morning & I told them she’d return home if they wouldn’t trouble her. They promised so she went & came to school. After school I asked if she wanted work. & she said they are going to pierce her ears tomorrow & next day lead her to the warriours kraal. So she stays here again tonight & if they come in the morning I’ll try to hire her for work here.

Wed. Dec. 16

Early this morning. N- & Sofi were going down to feed the chickens. when a warrior from Ngoso’s kraal caught N. & dragged her down the path. her father had been at Ku- & was coming up & met them so pulled at her too. I ran & tried to talk with them but he wouldn’t listen only said “Isn’t she my child”? She was screaming hard of course. I wrote a hurried note to Mr W. (back of book) & Kuyoni went on bicycle. Mr. W. sent out a retainer who brot in the warrior, father & Mother but not Noongota as she had been hustled off to the warriors kraal. He dismissed the warrior when he said he had only caught the girl for the father and the father said he wished the girl to go to the warriors kreaal so there was nothing he could do. He came to tea & we talked til 8. He was sincere I think but we feel he does all he can to save & shelter the warriors. We’ve written to protest & he says he sent John’s letter to the P.C. & if when he gets to Simba he finds the PC wants him to take further action he’ll return & carry on - but he can’t get the girl now. If only he’d get her & put her into prison to await trial - but no, the father wishes her to be there. Jno has written that if further action isn’t taken we’ll leave at Conf. time. Warriors are already saying how they can take who they please. now no one stops them. Whatever we can do when they talk like that, I don’t know. surely not carry on any mission work for they have no regard whatever for our message. Kuyoni too wont teach school any longer if they are going to make it that no girls will come. God alone knows what should be done & we want Him to guide.

Thur. Dec. 17

This has surely been “the day after”. Guess no one slept much last night. We were sure some one was around. Sofi wanted aspirin this morning. ‘Twas awfully hard to do any thing for any of the people today. Jno staid from prayer mtg & wrote his protest letter to Mr. W. & then tried to think during the night if he should send it or not. There’s fear in the air.

Fri. Dec. 18

I’m awfully afraid for Sofi. I don’t trust Manuel nor Ndilai very far. Some very painted warriors were here today. If I’d have done as I felt I’d have shot the gun off at ‘em. They came right into the house. Jno chased ‘em out. There’s a cir. dance on near by here. Ku took part & brot things from duka - & letter from Mr W. but he says he can’t take any further action now.

Sat. Dec. 19

Couldn’t seem to accomplish much today but cleaned & baked a little made fondent. My stomach seems to be turning back into place again but my heart is still heavy. I feel so restless & fearful - mostly for the girls. Jno has pretty well cleaned up the pool so its filling up again. Cloudy but no rain. how we hope some will come. K said N’s father came to his house yesterday but he didn’t see him. They’ll all come around I suppose - like always.

Sun. Dec. 20

Meetings as usual. 35 present this morning. Several men & women from kraals. Mondet spoke. Ndulanga returned to Rombo. so Ku. didn’t see him to say any thing to him. This is surely a good time to learn to trust. Can’t do any thing. Every way seems blocked. I suppose things will open up some time. Asked Mr W. to tea tomorrow sent word by Ndoyai.

Mon. Dec. 21

Two men stopt & asked for Lolopeny - so sent ‘em on. Worked hard getting things in shape. It rained hard much of the night & part of A.M. Lois washed & we got most dry enuf to iron but misty all day. If it’s like this toward Nairobi fear Stephensons wont come. tho don’t know how Ruth Lany will get home then. Girls went to Ku’s & helpt plant onions but didn’t tell me.

Tues. Dec. 22

Have waited late looking for Steph’s but no one has come. Cloudy all day but tho awful black to front & south yet we had no rain here. A huge mail came at noon. 25 letters etc. Mr W. hopes to get away in the morning. We set table & boiled potatoes & fried chicken. Sara sent Sh 80 Floyd Sh 20. Bless ‘em. Letter from Shaffers. They had none of mine yet. Wherever can they be.

Wed. Dec. 23

Lovely big mail yesterday- so we’re still at it today. Stephensons came just at dark and about half hour later, Johansens came. S’s had stuck in a hole and J’s went into the same place. Gordon & Griffith went over into the chapel & slept on boards. & Ruth L. on the couch & Patsy & Marion together. so we managed alright. Mrs S. had a bad head so went right to bed. She & Flossie are in guest room.

Thur. Dec. 24

S’s started away ab’t 10 but returned soon as the road was muddy & he couldn’t hold the lorry from slipping so put their battery into our car & went in it. Lookt very rainy Usere way shortly after they left. Jno took the J’s down fishing & only Flossie & Olava we decorated with palms & flowers so the house looked real nice. Girls made up candy.

Fri. Dec. 25

There was an early mtg but I forgot ab’t it. Started to rain after dinner & tho some gathered at school. we didn’t have the program til most 4 it rained so hard. Mondet said he fed 72 & Kuyoni had about 40. We had our turkey & pudding this eve. Awfully good. and we all enjoyed it so much. candy & popcorn disappeared too. We are so enjoying our guests.

Sat. Dec. 26

Men & Olava went to that clump of trees toward Rombo & were to get back for lunch but didn’t get here til 3. & then had been caught in a rain & were soaking wet. Flossie & I had a nice visit. We can’t agree ab’t Gordon. I want him to stay & Jno doesn’t. He’s afraid it’s going to be rainy now & bad roads. Have gramaphone every evening & during the day too.

Sun. Dec. 27

J’s got away by 8. It has been lovely & sunny all day so hope they found the roads not too bad. Gordon staid. We’ve had a lazy day of it. The girls went with Kuyoni to villages so we had no P.M. meeting. I read from Oswald Smith’s book “Clouds lifting’. A Mrs Bass sent us two. and this one seems very interesting. I’ve got “The Amazing Jew” from Mr. Stephenson.

Mon. Dec. 28

Jno is very much upset because I had Gordon stay & says he will not go to Kijabe at all. He & Gordon took a long walk down stream saw where elephants had been. Blaikies got here 4:30 & as it looked very rainy ahead toward Usere they decided to stay the night. Lois washed almost all day, but ‘twas nice & sunny so almost all dried. Beds were ready for ‘em.

Tues. Dec. 29

Blaikies left about 10 for Lanys. Jno & G. took lunch & went down stream. tramped a long way. shot some monkeys - saw lion track. Lois washed again. I baked bread. G. got two guineas before break. No rain at all. Have beds already for Stephensons. Girls are having their Xmas dinner tonight. Mahoo too ill to come to table. but 7 are eating in kitchen. 2 bros of Kasoni.

Wed. Dec. 30

Stephensons did not come so we think he must have made the trip to Mombasa. Dad does not want to go to Conf. no matter what happens. He feels affairs here will straighten out better if he says nothing. I will, maybe. Wrote the boys. Dad & Gordon walked to the round hill S.E. His knee troubles some & his stomach is upset.

Thur. Dec. 31

And here we are at the end of the year and what a yr. Especially these last 4 mos. Deliver us from another like it - but praise God His grace is sufficient still & that’s all that helps as we look into the New Year. Stephensons haven’t yet come. All cleaned up & ready for them. Kuyoni went with letters.

How we do pray that God may be glorified in all we do & say these days. Such strange things keep happening - such perplexing things that we don’t know how to handle. Dad felt sure he did right in writing Mr. Whitehouse that if something was not done to restore that girl that we’d have to leave. & he replied the P.C. says fathers wish is law! And yet now Jno doesn’t think he should go to Conf. nor do any thing. I don’t get him at all. I sometimes feel so disappointed I could give it all up & go home to Am. gladly - it seems such a hopeless task. to do any thing for these people. And yet Jno seems willing to just sit & Mr. W. seems to think thats a plenty for us to do. How little he knows of the desires of a child of God.

Little did I realize when I wrote the above what it meant. [Dec. 31, 1935 - “What has 1936? It has Jesus our Leader & guide & that is sufficient to help us to know it will be a blessed year. Such a Ruler guarantees success if we but follow. God help us.”] But it was the truth then and still is. What awful suffering in Abbysinia & in Spain. We haven’t that but we have heart suffering & we want to endure all for His sake & the furthering of His cause. Shall begin a new book tomorrow. Where will it end? God knows. basi [“okay then”] that’s enuf.
