Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary – 1939.                                                                                Index

Sun. Jan. 1

And now another year is begun & we are pretty far from home. Perhaps in two yrs. from now we’ll be together again in So. Af. We need not worry ab’t the future. God has led & taken care of us so long, He can be fully trusted for the rest. Ray is feeling much better but resting some today. The rest all went to 2nd service. Ray only to 1st. Cl. read from Keswick add. tonight.

Mon. Jan. 2

Our last night here. The time has gone so fast & we’ve enjoyed it so much we hate to leave. Rays go with us to Moto so it’s not so bad. as to leave them here. They’ll go to Niangara from there & take & get post etc so ‘twill be worth while. We have washed, ironed & baked some & packed lunches and our suit cases and are ready to leave by daylight. Every one to bed early.

Tues. Jan. 3 MOTO – Littlejohns & Miss Quinche

Got away ab’t 5:40. Ate break. at ferry. Miss Utting insisted we have tea so spent most an hr. there & another hr. at the Gov’t Office at Dungu. then one mi out R’s car acted up & after he worked for 15 min. it went on fine. Stopt for lunch at 1:10. Made a few mistakes in the road but got here by 5:30. Miss Q is here just now. really on her way home. So glad to meet all. Their house is very large & roomy so we are all fixed up. Dad & I have Miss Q’s room. Elephant grass here. Tho the station is hi & the view pretty. We’re to go only 60 mi. tomorrow to Maitulu. Webber’s station.

Wed. Jan. 4 MAITULU – Webbers

Said goodby to Rays. they got away before we did as Cl. tightened his brakes. but we got here by 12:30 or so. Mrs. W. soon had a lovely lunch ready & then we climbed the big rock & got such a wonderful view of the country. Baby Kenneth is a darling - 7 ms. but not yet sitting up. Had hard wind & thunder storm last night at Moto - like at Kacengu in 1913.

Thur. Jan. 5 Nyangkundi.

Got away by 5:30. Mrs W. would make break. so we didn’t need to stop until lunch time. Tho we got gas at a mines place. The road was fairly good but such twists & turns among the hills. Stormed last eve too but roads are gravel. Passed thro Kilo, Nizi and stopt at Bunia but couldn’t do much shopping as the main store was taking inventory. Met Mr. Searle & Harlow there & got here several hrs before they did. These people getting ready for the arrival of Deans from U.S.A.

Fri. Jan. 6 Oicha.

Saw a huge fire at Irumu landing field. 10 native houses burned. not huts but long houses. Its lovely in the forest again. Bells & McIntosh had gone to Beni so we were at Williams for tea & sup. tho Mother H made tea for us too. Went to Beckers for news & Bells returned - one tire is in shreds & wheel battered awful. ruined, I guess. They had no spare. Agnes gave us their room!!!

Sat. Jan. 7 Ruwenzori.

Got things taken around & accts. straight & waited for mail. but no Kenya mail at all. And have heard nothing ab’t Hoyts so we came on thinking they’ll come on Mon. no doubt. Found lots of porters where we left the car. There was a chair & I used it some. but walked most all the way. It had rained & the path was slippy. Got here ab’t 8. Found Langfords here. Hot bath & to bed.

Sun. Jan. 8

Rested so well. Had nice quiet day. native services in A.M. sleep in P.M. & our service this eve & chat. We are having such meals that I’m eating too much. Uhlingers finally got their mail this morn. Don’t know where the men went last night with loads. Took walk to the turbine. How we wonder where H’s are.

Mon. Jan. 9

Natives came & said elephants were in gardens so Cl & Mr Langford went for ‘em. Took no lunch for they expected to be back sooner but didn’t get in til 4 or after but had shot one. Two others got away. Now we’re planning a picnic there tomorrow & will take pictures. No Hoyts yet so have ab’t given up looking for ‘em. If they don’t come & Martha isn’t here I may not try the Mt.

Tues. Jan. 10

All but Miss Noweck went to picnic after pictures. Cl. talked to the natives a gospel talk then we went to the river & had lunch but it got pretty late. Then all but Mr. U. went to see the Commissioner of the Park. Cl. asked him to send 10 porters Thur. morn. Saw his funny chimpanzi. Met other officials. Pretty tired til we got home but by taking Cl’s walking stick we got up by dark & before the tepoy - but Dad beat us all.

Wed. Jan. 11

No women going up. Cl & Mr L. went to Beni to get shoes for Mr. L. They also bot more stuff for the mt. Dad cut a path straight back to the river. but didn’t finish it all. Dr Becker & the children came. Had games & refreshment. This eve. we had lunch down on big rock & then Mrs U. & I sat & talked, til most 5 P.M.

Thur. Jan. 12

Dad got away right after breakfast. and the others, ab’t 9. Took some time to get loads arranged. So glad Mr. U. went too. We had another picnic lunch down on the big rock. Becker children & Betty were swimming before & after. Water seems very cold but they didn’t mind. Beckers left ab’t 3:15. I mended at Cl’s khaki all day & am not yet finished. Played a bit after supper then talked. It lightened & thundered & rained hard here. and was awful black over the mt. but this first night they have a rest house. Clear when we went to bed ab’t 10.

Fri. Jan. 13

Mrs. U. had my things moved up into Cl’s room & it is nice being here in the house. Wrote Mrs. Probst for I saw in J.B. paper that Chas had left there & was on his way out. So glad. tho we haven’t heard when they sail. Knitted quite a bit at Cl’s sweater. Mt was lovely clear this morn. but heavy clouds soon gathered. How I’d like to see Dad for 5 min. This will probably be his last try at a Mt. We have such lovely salads 2 times a day.

Sat. Jan. 14

I baked apple pie & tarts, wrote some, read some and talked more. The latter seems to be our biggest occupation these days. “Children, Westervelts, Calif” as well as the men up the Mt. seem to be common interests. garden, womens mtgs, etc comes in too. Hope the men are at the Lake now, & that they have enuf blankets. Mrs U. has been mending evenings. I knit & the other 3 play games. Always 9:30 or 10 before we go to bed.

Sun. Jan. 15

Lovely quiet day. 2 services A.M. Wrote letters & read all P.M. Evening service & Keswick address & then talked til late. There seems so much to talk ab’t as Mrs U. knows so many of the old workers who aren’t here any more. The apple pie was very good. Would like to have handed some to the men on the Mt.

Mon. Jan. 16

Ab’t 3:30 Mr. U. & Mr. L. came in - they & Cl. got to first camp ab’t 10 & as they left Dad way behind, Cl. staid there & they came on. so they 2 & the porters will no doubt be in tomorrow. perhaps by noon. Rained some this morn but nice & sunny part of the time. Mr U got to glacier Dad to 2nd lake. All had mt sickness. I’ll move down to other house tomorrow.

Tues. Jan. 17

Suppose Conf. is in full swing by now. I’d like awfully to be there. Cl. got in ab’t 1:30 & we sent the chair out for Dad. as he was ab’t all in. He came ab’t 3:30 but said the men could hardly carrry him. so he only rode a little bit. We sent a papai & tea out & he pepped up after that. Had bath & seems already asleep. Muscles are pretty sore. but may be better tomorrow.

Wed. Jan. 18

Cl. & Langford got away right after break. She was in chair. Boys washing all dirty Mt clothes. Dad isn’t nearly as stiff as he expected to be. Took pictures after break. They laughed at Dad for he said he thot he had malaria, & then dysentery, and then pneumonia. & the he found all the others were feeling just like him & they had mt. sickness. Listened to radio tonight. Just after they left had beautiful Welsh music.

Thur. Jan. 19

Cl. got back ab’t 3 P.M. Brot only 1 letter. Brot Sara’s shoes & Mrs. U. thinks she can wear ‘em. I mended all day. Listened to radio again & finished front of Cl’s red sweater. The crowd going to Sake got away from Oicha early. Agnes rather expected us at Oicha - but wasn’t room for us all in Cl’s car. Cl. brot flour so we’ll bake for safari on Sat.

Fri. Jan. 20

Went wading up the river to the falls. Took 2 pictures. Followed along Dad’s path but it’s not finished so we had an awful scramble to get down & again to come out. The river valley or gorge is beautiful. No radio tonight as Miss N. is replastering & hasn’t moved back. Played games. They have a Ching Checker board played with marbles which is fun.

Sat. Jan. 21

Baked bread buns cookies & date cookies - all but the latter are for our safari. Cl. hauled out some old shirts that needed mending so I got them all fixed up & socks darned. Took our supper down to the river. Went to Miss Nowecks for radio. It’s lightening & threatening rain. hope it all comes down tonight so the path is dry Mon. Morn. We’ve had such a lovely time here.

Sun. Jan. 22

We were awakened by a hard crash of thunder before 6 but just as it was getting light & then natives yelling & then we saw the dispensary was afire. some one got in & saved the microscope & a few bottles. otherwise every thing is burned. some enamel pans are still usable. The brick walls are standing. Miss N. feels awful ab’t it but no one is to blame. All mtgs as usual. Jno led tonite & we’re ab’t ready to get off in the morn.

Mon. Jan. 23 Oicha

Were off by 5:45 & got to the car by 8. had our breakfast & came on to here. Found Langfords & Miss Groat still here & Spees & Deans. and after we got here Demmings came. We are 29 on the station. Record no. We brot a lot of stuff from Beni for our Biasiko trip. Mr. B. called for me so we hope they’ll be along. Letter from Hoyts saying Mrs. H. had to go to the coast. not well. Letter from Ray. Had had 2 spells of fever. Nothing form Eriks.

Tues. Jan. 24 Camped in Forest.

Found we had more loads than men. Jim took us to where we follow forest path. Dad & I went on & Cl. came with porters & loads. Jim got carriers for chair & took ‘em to Beni to meet us tomorrow night on the main path (Beni to Mambasa). We went only 2 hrs. then we waited 1 hr & more for Cl. Then lunched & had gone 1 hr when rain & hail came hard. water was near so we camped. Tho it leaves a very long day tomorrow. When rain started, tree frogs started & there’s been a chorus of ‘em.

Wed. Jan. 25 Mapengu village.

Left camp at 7:30. stopt ab’t 1 hr. for shooting monkeys & 20 min. to eat & got here 4:45. My heals are both blistered. Walking wasn’t hard as twasn’t much up & down but lots of vines & hard to see the path in many places. I’m too tired to eat but Dad & Cl are having bananas fried & roasted and Kippers. I’ve had tea & postum. The chair is here. Porters happy for Cl shot 3 monkeys for ‘em. This is a large village. Crossed 2 large streams today. a tree was over first one - but Dad carried me over 2nd. like long ago. Nice to get out of the thick forest. tho this is still forest.

39

Thur. Jan. 26

Left camp ab’t 8. was carried all the way but after ab’t 1 ½ hrs. we got to a village & waited for the rest to come. Cl. was shooting monkeys 5. Dad came on alone for he was feeling quite ill. He has been hot all day & nauseated so we staid here. Wanted chicken but couldn’t get any. Prospectors are camped near here & have cleared up good things to eat. If Dad feels able we’ll go on tomorrow. if not we’ll send word to Oicha to meet us at Beni & we’ll head that way. He thinks he took cold.

Fri. Jan. 27

Dad felt much better & as we hadn’t far to go we had late break. & got off by 9. It thundered & lightened terribly hard before midnight but almost no rain. then just at day light a drizzle set in. I rode much of the time but had to get out often at deep streams. Ate lunch at a village got a papai. Dad’s clothes were wringing wet. Came on a bit further & stopt for the night where there’s a teacher. Got a chicken & had soup which all enjoyed. also eggs. Just got tents up & had wash off - when hard rain came. Ditches didn’t help much. tho each tent had a dry spot. Dad enjoyed the soup & feels better.

Sat. Jan. 28

Rain again just at dawn. Dad didn’t have a very good night. was up at midnight & got antacids. Seems to have no temp. just nauseated. Ate a bit of break. & we came on. At village where we take canoe across Biena River he ate bananas, but gave em up again. Went to see rapids & Cl took picture. Couldn’t ride on this side of river & too thick forest. Lots of tiny flies here get in eyes & ears & nose. Cl. went shooting monkeys. got 5. Dad has taken quinine after eating hash for supper & if it stays down will take more in morning. This is a deserted village. porters dug potatoes - found green bananas.

Sun. Jan. 29

We’re in a beautiful spot just up from a pretty little stream. Dad sweated a lot in the night & now thinks his trouble is fever. Took 10 grs. at break & again tonite & kept ‘em down. Is taking soda too. Has had little trouble walking. We tead at a very pretty stream. Cl has picture. Twas a grand walk this morn. God could not have been nearer to us in a cathedral service. Some thick spots but mostly open like among redwoods. Heavy fog this morn but mostly sunshine. Cl. had little service around fire. Moon half full.

Mon. Jan. 30

Dad had rather hard time getting here by 12:15. My heel rubbed so rode much. some thick places again. Are at a lovely village. mostly pygmies. They had an elephant dance on so we got a picture. Then almost every one left the village to go to the elephant which is quite a ways off. They took food & mats as tho staying for a few days. Brot chicken, rice, eggs & best of all papai. Dad came in carrying one. Such good eats that he pepped up at once. Expect to get to Biasiko tomorrow. Good!

Tues. Jan. 31 BIASIKO

I rode some & we got here ab’t 1. It is a lovely place & can be made into a very pretty station. A lot of pygmies from the village soon gathered. The teacher & others came out on path to meet us. Cl’s house still stands but the roof is too far gone to occupy. A roof without sides is very new & that’s where the porters are sleeping. We got tents up & cleaned up a bit & had food before it started to rain. There were pineapples & papai ready for us & we did enjoy them.

Who is so blest as we - last mo. ended & we all together at Rays. & this mo. here we are at Cl’s station. By end of next mo. hope we’ll be back on the job at Syabei or some where. We’ve had a good enuf time to last awhile. Dad is itching to get hold of a panga & make paths. but this rain has dampened those spirits somewhat. Hope ‘twill be clear tomorrow so we can get clothes washed & dry. We need ‘em. For supper we just had fruit salad all from here. papei, pines [pineapples] & bananas.

Wed. Feb. 1

Dad fixed up a place in a tree to see out. Rainy all morning. Porters were determined to go back from here. but its hard to get carriers from here so are asking them to stay with us. Cleared up a bit so this eve we walked down to the river thro a real pygmy village. Do hope it clears so we can get pictures. Tiny gnats are terrible here. they seem to poison Dad most. but all of us have bites on neck & hands & wrists. Such tiny things but leave awful bites. Porters seem happier this eve. We don’t want to leave til Sat. but gnats may be too bad to stay that long. The view from the house is grand - toward the south.

Thur. Feb. 2

As we finished the bread last eve, I made pancakes for our lunch today & they weren’t too bad. Went down to the river crossed on the vine bridge. Had quite a following. Cl. shot a monkey on way down & then 9 more when there. so the porters are happy. Sun came out & we took several pictures. one of pygmy village near here. Cl. had one chicken left here so we had it for supper. & dumplings. Stars are bright & full moon. Gnats are still troublesome.

Fri. Feb. 3

And today we went to the Chief’s village - 45 min. walk. He called on us yesterday while we were at river. He has a nice large village. Says there’s a mining camp not far away to which a motor road comes. from near Paul H’s. Guess safaris such as we’ve made wont be made much any more as mining roads are coming nearer & nearer. Cl. went to another village. we came home after lunch. This has been a grand eve. Sat out in the moonlight til late. Wonder if we 3 will ever sit out together again at Biasiko.

Sat. Feb. 4

Are loath to leave Biasiko but got off by 7:30. Teachers came with us a ways. Crossed the Biena River on high vine bridge. and came on only a little way when a hard rain came just as we got to a village. So took refuge, & didn’t get wet at all. Then came on for another ¾ hr. to a teacher village. Dad & I are having our beds in the rest house. Cl. shot a monkey. Nice village here. Teacher wanted to leave but elders talked with Cl. & so he’s staying on.

Sun. Feb. 5

Another Sun. in this most wonderful of all God’s Cathedrals. Sunny & bright. The forest is grand in sunlight. Went thro a village today where there was a gray & white cat. tame & nice. Another village had a sick baby. so sorry couldn’t help it except by prayer. At this village we have our beds in a new house. Not quite all roofed & no mud on walls. Got lovely bananas. Rained as we ate supper. Asani is going on early with note to Mr. Bell. Hope to catch him at the mining camp. A baby chimpanzee here. The folks want sh. 100 for it. Wonder where we’ll be tomorro nite. And this lovely safari over. (See back)

[from back of book, with two pressed flowers “Picked in Ituri forest”] Sun eve. Feb. 5 This is likely the last night of camping for us. We’ve had just 2 wks. of it and had such an enjoyable time that I’m real sorry it’s overwith. With the exception of the day Jno was sick, & we thot we might have to turn back, it’s been most delightful. We had hard rains and lovely days. Again & again we’ve just escaped a rain by finding shelter or getting into camp as at Biasiko. Gnats troubled us lots at Biasiko. so we had a taste of the less delightful things of the forest.

A number of villages we passed thro we were enabled to see what native teachers are doing. God bless them as they teach of Him. We do pray that permission to occupy Biasiko may soon be granted for there’s much, much to do there. not least is medical work. such numbers & numbers with itch and all sorts of troubles. The devil will contend the entrance of workers there but God will bless. & keep.

Williams are very eager to come out & we’ll be glad to think they are with Cl. He, Cl., is so needed in these parts may God preserve him. Such a lot of traveling to see to work in these many villages. He gets on very well with the natives & seems to enjoy getting around.

Guess this is likely the last safari Dad & I will ever take. We’ve had the chair & I’ve been carried some but think I could have made these easy trips with no such help. Don’t suppose such safaris will be taken by any one for long as roads are being made to mining camps. one is now only ab’t a day from Biasiko & the one from Mambasa is across the Ituri River. So they’ll soon be able to drive quite near. & then next to make a private road to meet these others. We’d like much to help get Biasiko started. but not much chance of after furlo.

We thot Dad’s sick spell might be malaria but there’s been no recurrence of it and so he thinks it must have been poisoning or upset stomach - like my trouble at Rays. We’ve both been so well all the way along otherwise. Just can’t thank God enuf for all His blessings. And hope we can soon get back to Syabei & work on for Him. til He guides in another direction. We want only His best.

Mon. Feb. 6 Dean’s Station

Got off before 7:30 & in 4 hrs were at Ituri & crossed on vine bridge. ate lunch & were off by 12. Next 4 hrs. were hard as the path was over grown & I hardly rode at all. First got to deep ditch dug but fairly over grown. many rotten logs as bridges. one chair man went thro one but not hurt. So glad to see Mr. Bell at mines camp 4 P.M. The official’s wife made coffee for us. & it was refreshing. One of the porters had “bangi” with him so was put in jail. Sorry but we all want to get it cleaned out. We got to Woodhams ab’t 6. & then came on to Sr. Deans. Bills are here too. Very nice to get bathed & into clean clothes. Jim says Eriks haven’t come.

Tues. Feb. 7 Oicha.

Got here about 12:30. and there isn’t a scrap of mail here. Uhlingers aren’t back yet either & Mrs. Williams is with them. Alice is still OK. but expects to be in hospital any min. Agnes tells us Dr. Miller died Dec. 15 and Mr. Chilson in Jan. after a stroke. Will write them. Got every thing pretty well unpacked. Talking of going to Paul’s for a day & the men going out on the new mines road toward Biasiko. No Uhlingers yet. Almost finished Cl’s sweater. Big lot washing for tomorrow.

Wed. Feb. 8

Uhlingers came in this eve & brot lots of mail but nothing from Eriks. tho Mr. Richardson who was at Kijabe Conf. brot word they are not coming. Letter from Ana & Sitoya. Things seem alright at Syabei but Mrs S. writes Ida has been done. It makes us feel very sad ab’t M. to think he is still so shenzi. I cleaned my hat & got letters off in post.

Thur. Feb. 9

Mr. U. gave Cl. leave to take us home! We are so grateful & now we are planning to leave Sat. spend Sun. with Pauls & if they will allow it, take Chas. with us so Cl. wont need to come back alone. It simplifies matters very much for getting things back up here. Dr. B filled out our med. blanks this PM. (burned a little growth out of me with electricity) We had supper there & the radio. Wonder if we’ll get any peaches when we get home. [arrow drawn to previous year’s entry about peaches getting ripe at Siyabei]

Fri. Feb. 10

Mending & putting things together to get packed up. News tonight says the Pope died today. Finished reading “Barchester Towers”. Cl. drove out a ways & then we walked thro the forest to 2 pigmy villages. Agnes. Cl. Dad & I. Some were dancing at a village along the road. Had ice cream at Miss Russ house. Dr had to have another specimen also blood specimen.

Sat. Feb. 11 Misebere

Got every body’s last orders, and had dinner (a big one) at Agnes’s while it poured down rain. Then mail came & we were off. Stopt at Beni & got here by 4 P.M. Paul was away but came home this eve. The children have all grown so much. Dorothy & Helen are almost young ladies. Helen is beautiful. We’ve asked them to let Chas come with us. Talked late. It’s cold here.

Sun. Feb. 12

Such a pleasant day here. 2 services this A.M. but we rested this P.M. I finished the home letter & posted it here. Chas. is going with us for which I am very glad. Looks like we’ll have an interesting trip tomorrow. Miss White took picture of crowd then Helen gave us 2 films for the box but they are short so Cl. numbered them over & we’ll use ‘em for the volcano. Eng. service this eve.

Mon. Feb. 13 At lava flow.

Left Pauls at 8:10. Beautiful drive to Lubero. Then past Kitsambiro and saw the part of the road we went over in ‘34 in the dark. Down escarpment. stopt for lunch before dropping down. Stopt at hot sprgs. Stopt & watched 3 hippos & got picture. Stopt 40 min because of hard rain. Thro Rutchuru & turned onto Sake road. all that by dark. first we saw red glow then could see bits of red lava off to one side some distance. ‘Twas awesome. & we were going along & suddenly Cl. pulled up the emergency & here we were facing a huge pile of lava. So backed to one side & camped. had sq. canvas & all slept under it but didn’t sleep much.

Tues. Feb. 14

What a day. took a trip to see the hot lava before break. also to lake & asked canoe to be there at 9 for us. it was. we went to Sake mission site. Upper half of chapel stone walls still stand but surrounded by lava. too hot to go very near for picture but tried one. The noise of steam where lava runs into lake is like 40 steam engines. & boiling water spouts high up & sometimes bunches of hot lava are thrown out too. We left & drove thro pretty woods - ate lunch at lake shore on to Kisenyi and on to Ruhengeri customs & on Kisoro customs & to a nice rest house by dark.

Wed. Feb. 15

Climbed & wound around those wonderful hills to Kabale. Rained some & was very cold. Bot 3 nice big fish freshly caught near Lake Bunyoni. Lunched beside the road. Cl. fried eggs on little stove. Chas seems to be enjoying it all. Asked in vain for rest house & finally camped in the grass. Cl & Chas took fish to clean & brot water. We finally got fire agoing & had boiled potatoes & fried fish. They were good. Will have some cold for breakifast. Using nets tonight. Dad & I on car cushions. Quite comfy.

Thur. Feb. 16

Came on today thro several towns: Mbarara - Masaka & Kampala where we stopt & got a few things. Then to Jinja & got pictures of falls. but hadn’t much time as a storm was coming up. We missed it. The second one that went round. Thot we’d go into rest house at Iganga but it was occupied. Were directed to another & that too was taken. but we had nice place to stay near a chief. Lots of mosquitos here. Lunched at a lovely place in the woods. Got picture.

Fri. Feb. 17 Kaimosi

’Got here ab’t 2. Mr H. was away but came in before supper at Kellums. Mrs. H. is still at coast. Had uneventful trip this far. came spinning along - ate on this side of Kakamega. Could have gone on to Kapsabet but Kellums said “No”. Sleep here at H’s. sat up late & talked. Chas played the piano a bit. First chance he’s ever had to touch one. He loves music.

Sat. Feb. 18 Ravine

Expected to get away at once but found the tire a bit soft so took it out to mend. & worked at it til noon. Then lunched & found it still leaked then Mr H loaned us one of his & we came on. At Kapsabet left the Powley box and telegrams to send tomorrow as office was closed. Then took the wrong road & wandered miles out of our way. Then met ox teams dragging big things that we had to wait for. but when we hit the road we came tearing along & got here a bit after 7. All well here & so nice to see ‘em.

Sun. Feb. 19

Nice quiet day. Rested this P.M. Attended mtg A.M. Erik says Shaffers are at Narok. I’m glad & will send a wire as soon as we know when we get there. Men took walk in one direction, Emily, children & I in another. Talked late. only Dad went to bed. Linnells have gone to Mukaa for language work. & to help there as F’s go to Mulango soon. & Lyons on furlo.

Mon. Feb. 20 Kijabe

Came down in a hurry. no trouble only lost my walking stick; no wonder on such roads. We were all at Davises for dinner. The boys are at Devitts. & we in white ward. & Davises. Ruth T is here as she’s been having dysentery trouble again. Had tea at Kens. Talked late. Ab’t ready to go tomorrow. Are we ever going to stop going?

Tues. Feb. 21 Nairobi

3 mos. ago today we left for Congo! Got fair start & went up the hill. it is much shorter. Put shoes into 2 repair places. Also took film to Peters. Then to lunch & back. more shopping & still not done. Can’t look around much - just take what we can get. Mr. Nixon, Edith D., Mr. Stokes, and also Miss Gough are here. Miss S. is kind to let us all stay.

Wed. Feb. 22 Kijabe

Got every thing pretty well done in town & were here a bit after 4. but no mail lorry has come. so Cl. will go down early with a load of stuff & we’ll not be so heavily loaded then. Want to get cuttings in the morn. for Helen. Got butter & will have peaches in the morn. so boys can eat some. Is it possible we’ll be home tomorrow night?

Thur. Feb. 23

Cl. worked at the car all day. He took a load of things down to go on the lorry & when he came back the spring was pretty badly slipping so put in new one & a new cross piece too. I should have accomplished a lot but I didn’t. Called on Mrs. Hoyt after tea & showed her the pictures. She’s been in bed all day. feels the altitude. Mrs Davis & I went to Kens & heard our new records. Dad went to bed. Hope we can get home tomorrow.

Fri. Feb. 24 HOME

The old car fussed quite a while so we didn’t leave Kijabe til 10. and then stopt at dukas but finally got here ab’t 4 after going to Narok & teaing with Shaffers. Ida came when I called & she & Bessie of Kashisha will help me. Boys will go to Narok in the morning & get other things. It is nice to be back but every thing is so dry. Hope we’ll get milk tomorrow.

Sat. Feb. 25

Kamoni brings milk 2 bots. 25¢. & when rains come we’ll get it again for .10 per bot. Bessie washed. I baked bread & cakes. Boys got vegs. etc. I worked all day & at 4 went to Narok for supper & school boys program after which John Njeri spoke for an hour but very good. judging by attention of people. Milaun is very bad again in his mind. Ida cleaned these two rooms but I’ve not unpacked any thing yet. Boys wont go Mon. so I’ll have a bit more time.

Sun. Feb. 26

Every one went to Narok for dedication and baptismal service. We lunched at the sports field. & baptised just after, not far below Olgoyai’s house. Over 300 at that service & John N. spoke very well & several decided for Christ. Then communion service when all the newly baptised were present. Lorry hadn’t come so we came on - Milaun on running board. Troubled some in meetings but not bad.

Mon. Feb. 27

3 men went fishing. Susana helpt with wash. Shaffers came when we were eating supper. he had some peaches & tea but they had eaten. He says Milaun has been shut up til Wed. when he will be taken to Nairobi. I’m glad. It is windy & so dry. Trying to get all folks things sorted out. goes slow for must help in kitchen. baked cookies & bread too.

Tues. Feb. 28

When Mrs. S. found I was planning to stay home from picnic she wanted to too but I prevailed & she went. I had so much I wanted to do besides going to the womens meeting this P.M. They left right after break. & Susana came to help with ironing.

Suji washed for Mrs. S. and baked bread too. She baked some cookies this eve. The girls help what they can but don’t go ahead with things. only washing dishes. Have Congo things pretty well fixed up. Cedar chest is packed. & a small box for Helen H. & one for Mrs. Uhlinger. The stove pipes all went into the chest. but we put things into them first. All bills balanced only we owe Miss Amstutz some. & others owe us & Cl. will straighten all out with them. This has been a happy mo. saw so much & enjoyed all so much. but am tired - awful. No fever, so far but almost afraid to say it aloud.

Wed. Mar. 1

Boys got off right after break. a good load of stuff but not awful heavy. Shaffers got away after A.M. tea for Kilgoris. Then they’ll go to Lasit for vacation mo. So Eriks can be in their house. And now we are alone again. Rested this P.M. but still much to sort & put in order. I’m so tired & my tummy hurts a good deal. but will rest now.

Thur. Mar. 2

Hard rain. They don’t have prayer mtg any more. I darned socks & put some things away. Bessie went to Narok but post was late so Sitoya brot it ab’t 7:30. A letter from Lora says a parcel is coming for me. next post should bring it. The women are fined if they don’t come to the women’s mtg. so usually most come. 20 to 30.

Fri. Mar. 3

Baked bread & cookies & ironed so am tired. Rested long this P.M. then wrote Emily & got books ready for a man at Rumuruti. Will try to send things by some one going to Narok tomorrow. Girls come so late. both this morn & this eve. but guess they’ll know better soon; they try to do things right. Ida is learning to set the table.

Sat. Mar. 4

Thot I hadn’t any thing to do today but was busy til noon. Bessie cleaned living room walls & floor & Ida washed bed room. I washed hair & bathed before dinner. Tummy is better today. rested more. Wrote Chas & Jess. Guess haven’t mentioned that Clarke left for home early Feb. went via South. Ngoiponi is keeping his place.

Sun. Mar. 5

Thot sure I had fever this P.M. for I felt very hot & so drowsy. couldn’t wake up. but it was very hot & so windy guess that’s why. My tummy has hurt a lot today. Guess I’ll take a few doses of atabrin. Fair crowd out. so many people have gone away with their cattle. Not enuf herders here now for night school.

Mon. Mar. 6

Got dark & sprinkled least bit. John working at new toilet. Washed. Girls are doing better. Tank is filling so twill be nice to have water in kitchen again. Started night school but don’t know how many are coming. Sewed a dress for Lois Sitoya. Taking atebrin. Stomach better tonight Sitoya went for mail. I typed at trip letter.

Tues. Mar. 7

Another try at rain but none came. So thankful for remittance. 9 at night school. About 15 at day school. Several little Kikuyu girls. Bessie said her mother is sick & needs her so she didn’t come but tonight says father wants her to go to Nairaq Ngare. so I pd her off. Ida goes to Narok tomorrow. Told women of our trip. 25 present. Showed pictures.

Wed. Mar. 8

Ida went to Narok for me. Got awfully dark & thundered and blew and rained a little. How we do wish for more. Sewed at little dresses & the prizes. Ida brot khaki so will make Kefa some pants. John is working at Mission history some.

Thur. Mar. 9

No rain nor clouds. I worked at childrens prize clothes. felt pretty bum most all day but better this eve. good mail came but no butter. Sitoya brot leg of mutton. Ivy wrote they want to come out tomorrow after school because R.V.A. are going to picnic Sat. at bridge & we are invited too. Johnny’s & M’s picture in “Life” from Emma.

Fri. Mar. 10

No rain. Did up Sat. work. baked date & plain cookies & pie & beans etc. Am mixing biscuits stiff to bake in a hurry in morning. Finished sewing - buttonholes & all. Are waiting for Kenneths. 8:45 & not here yet.

They came at 10! Car trouble.

Sat. Mar. 11

Baked the buns quickly & got away by 9:30 but went to Narok first. & found our butter & a box of peaches from Mrs Davis. They should all have been given Sitoya on Thur. Flies were bad at picnic but children had a good time any way. My tummy hurt bad. We came back for tea then opened a box K’s brot with my Ward things from Lyons & when we opened it was mostly Scudders so Ks take it back again. SO hot!

Sun. Mar. 12

Services as usual. Sitoya preached. K. staid home & slept. Very hot & so windy. every one felt done out. We had tea 3:30 & they got away by 4. So we are alone. Lots of very black clouds but only a sprinkle. after dark. Fluffy kitty isn’t here tonight.

Mon. Mar. 13

Washed. I did most of it but used the “squasher” & it went fast. Ida helped well. Got mending all done & worked at schedule for school. Sitoya went for post & brot a big lot of letters that had been sent to Oicha. Also one from Ray written Feb. 8! $28. from the Stauffachers. We are so grateful.

Tues. Mar. 14

We both ironed & got done in good time. Womens mtg. Ruth W. & Susana taught the others the Lords prayer. as many of the raw women don’t know it. I’m writing the boys. Wish we’d hear from Cl. soon. No doubt will in next Congo mail. 2 wks ago he was still here.

Wed. Mar. 15

Ida didn’t come all day. so I did the work. My stomach feels bad so much of the time but clears up toward eve so I feel like eating supper. I take a ½ spoon of soda every night. Dad does too. Haven’t taken any atebrin this week.

Thur. Mar. 16

Shower tonight. I called for sewing class. about 7 came. Will let them sew material I brot from Nairobi then each can buy the dress she sews if she wants it. Ida chose yellow check. She came for work today but doesn’t seem to feel very well. Dad & I both gave up our dinner. My tummy is bad these days.

Fri. Mar. 17

Sent Wanja and Njooki for post & things from Kijabe & every thing came. Got very dark all round & thot we’d get a soaker but tho the women got a bit wet on the path we had none here. Finished typing the gen’l letter tonight. Also wrote Kens. They were so kind to send vegs - books, & lard.

Sat. Mar. 18

Baked and cleaned as usual. Got only 5 fish in the trap & tho we tried again we got no more. Guess the meat is old. Worked at S.S. lessons on Peter. Tried both new prs of shoes. The tan are so nice if they were only a bit shorter. Wrote Mrs McK. & sent gen’l letter. Forgot Prayer day yesterday!

Sun. Mar. 19

And this P.M. the break came - wind rain & hail. Pond got very full but not over the dam. Lots of hail & we feared ‘twould kill the fish but can’t see any. Meetings as usual. Nyakeiro will go for post tomorrow.

Mon. Mar. 20

Not much post but paper says Europe is again in trouble. Johns new khaki trousers came. very large but guess they’ll do. Wrote Lannings. Cats seem sick today. Only 2 are in the house. The fluffy black is under the house but wont come out. Some rain tonight after storm of wind & lightening. Washed. & all dry.

Tues. Mar. 21

Ida did most the ironing. I give the women the same lesson I give children on Sun. Hereafter Susana will tell them after hearing me tell children on Sun. I had talk with Su. yesterday ab’t her visits to a single man’s house. She said she keeps garden tools there but wont any more. Sprinkle only tonight.

Wed. Mar. 22

As Wambui was going to Narok she took my letters. & I asked Bachu to tell his man to bring my box from the station. I’m glad there were no special classes for me today as I’ve been miserable all day. Liver for breakfast was no good for my tummy. I’ve tried soda every night for over a week & now I’ll take atebrin.

Thur. Mar. 23

Sitoya went for post & to get cheque cashed. and as Susana went too I told her I’d be glad if she’d bring the box I hoped would come from Scudders with the bowls etc in. She did, so finally I have my Ward order & I hope by this time Scudders have theirs too. A letter from them tells of getting the wrong box. Letter from Ray & pictures with new camera. Letter from Ag. says Cl & Chas got there Sun. noon. Why so late.

Fri. Mar. 24

No rain yet. tho it’s getting dark again. The milk is clabber every morning. Dr. wants to come again [arrow drawn to his visit this date previous year] but can’t get away yet. Made two dresses out of the blue basket weave Lo sent me - it faded so. Gave to Siaita & Nemolel for filling dirt into the hen house & carrying stones making garden fence tight.

Sat. Mar. 25

John planted some. has finished fence. smashed his finger badly by dropping a stone on it. Worked at S.S. lessons this P.M. Rained some tho not much. Mulungit said he’s going to Narok to church tomorrow & will bring the mail. Ida does so well these days - isn’t fast but faithful.

Sun. Mar. 26

Lots of threatening to rain but no rain. Mulungit went to Narok church and then brot the mail. Things are awful in Europe. Nixon calls for prayer day on Fri. funds needed and workers too. Emily writes they’ll be here ab’t 11th. Letter from Lora & Dr Newberry. Services as usual. Worked at lessons for children.

Mon. Mar. 27

We washed. dark clouds but nothing more. Wrote many local letters & have still more to get off. Wrote Aunt A’s birthday letter & sent copy of trip & pictures. Johns smashed finger is pusy - but not very painful. Wonder how much longer we can keep out of war.

Tues. Mar. 28

My stomach has been worse again today. By looking back I find it’s ab’t every 6 days that it’s worse. Had the women’s mtg. tho my head ached. Sprinkle of rain. Got letters already to go tomorrow. Pressed my new dresses today & they are pretty & so useful.

Wed. Mar. 29

Went to school this A.M. & tonight. Sitoya just doesn’t teach syllables right - wasn’t taught this new way so finds it hard. I’ll go over every A.M. I possibly can & help. Made a n. gown today of pieces. Rained a bit this eve. Ngoiboni took mail.

Thur. Mar. 30

We got a thrill tonight when mail brot a letter from Emily saying things had so shaped themselves that they’d get here this next Mon. instead of another week. So Ida & I will have to get busy. Letter from Cl. too telling of all the awful time they had getting back - flat tires & wrong roads made them late.

Fri. Mar. 31

Mr. Nixon called on all to observe this day as a day of prayer for funds & workers. So Jno spent the A.M. in the woods. I had to get the other house cleaned some what - so I took most of the P.M. At 12:30 when resting a wire came from Erik saying Can’t come Mon.

Besides doing what I did last yr. [arrow drawn to previous yr. entry: women’s meetings & some school] I have sewing class on Thurs. and am trying to work up the S.S. somewhat. Doesn’t seem possible that Cl. was here when this mo. began. He’s no doubt glad to be back at work like we are.

Sat. Apr. 1

Well we are just WHERE we were last year. and no doubt will be next year. but the next should see us somewhere else. So. Af. or home - but by conditions in Europe we may be “caught up” before that time. Hitler has taken Czeckoslovakia like he took Austria. He doesn’t keep his word over night. Looks more & more as tho he is mad.

Sun. Apr. 2

Such a nice crowd out today. Must have been at least 20 school-boys here. because we had communion. While sitting here working at S.S. lessons ab’t 4 Milaun walked in the front door. Evidently he’s been sent back as cured. Kenneth sent a letter by him as M. asked him for Sh 5. I’ll ask ab’t it tomorrow. No one brot mail so will send tomorrow.

Mon. Apr. 3

Milaun went for post. brot letters from Emily and Esther. Rains started so Eriks are planting before leaving. Remit came too Thanks. Earl & E. want to go to Congo if money comes. If not then they’ll come here. It’s very dark north so perhaps Ravine is getting more. Milaun seems bad as ever. Have had bad stomach this P.M. & this is the 6th day. but I also got awful tired & then ate a big dinner & meat so that may be the reason.

Tues. Apr. 4

Haven’t been feeling very good all day & Milaun has been such a nuisance. Jno has written the D.C. a long letter & we hope he’ll get him tomorrow & put him in prison. It will be far better for Milaun. Nice women’s meeting. Jno finished putting cloth in windows & women have promised to plaster next week.

Wed. Apr. 5

While sitting at window reading my Bible ab’t 2:30 who should come but Messers Shaffer, Lichty & Griffith. They went fishing & caught such a lot. They are staying the week end. I hope Morima comes tomorrow & helps out. Ida is thoro but so slow. We hear milaun is at Ole Tuga’s village. I do hope he wont get back here. The men brot lovely figs.

Thur. Apr. 6

Worked all A.M. baked & pickled peaches. so had dinner a bit late also got things ready for tomorrows picnic. They may go to Narosero. Had sewing but was rather late. Was so tired this P.M. but was careful of food so am alright tonight. Nice mail. Helen and Mrs U. & Al. Also Peter’s bill S. 169.+!

Fri. Apr. 7

Got good start for Hot Sprgs. but were delayed at Narok ab’t getting permit. There’s a board across the bridge & no one can pass without permission. Very dry & dusty at Hot S. and no animals on the plains. Went on to Narosero. Almost tried for Ololiondo but had nothing along & Mr L. feared for his tires. Got back in good time & had music til pretty late. They both enjoy good music. Rained a pretty good shower.

Sat. Apr. 8

Sitoya went for meat. Ida & I did up work. Not much baking but got things ready for tomorrow. Had the whole of “Rigoletto” tonight. These two men surely like to tease one another. They are always at it & such jokers. Showered a bit this eve. Wrote Co. birthday letter.

Sun. Apr. 9 Easter

Mr Lichty took Mr S. to Narok for service there. They brot Morima & wife so I’m sure of help. A letter from Emily says they are coming Thur. sure if they can get an early start. Letter from Sara all well. Very hot but had one shower & thot rains were beginning. We had shower but more at Narok.

Mon. Apr. 10

I got up at 5 & had break ready by 6. They got off in good time. Women plastered the church & school rooms today. I gave them tea. There were ab’t 30 & several men. Wed. the men will do the floor. pound stones down. Then twill be very nice again. Morima starts work tomorrow. Big wash to do.

Tues. Apr. 11

So nice to have Morima back again. Got the washing all done & dry & ready to iron. Very black in West but hasn’t got here yet. tho it sprinkles a bit each night. Womens mtg today tho the place smelled just like a dirty cow barn. It will be very nice when dry. Tomorrow they want to do the floor pounded stone. Jno’s forearm is quite swelled from chopping wood yesterday.

Wed. Apr. 12

Got a lot done for there was no school because they pounded stone for the floor. It does look nice now. Morima baked bread & ironed. I wrote Becca this P.M. & Millers this eve. Wonder if Eriks will be here by tomorrow eve this time. Hope so.

Thur Apr. 13

They came ab’t 8. just as it started to rain. They were in rain and mud all the way. We feared as much for it was quite black over east all P.M. and at dark very stormy by bridge. They didn’t leave Kjb til 4:30. Then the steering was bad so with slipping they had a wriggly time of it. Ida had made fire in guest house so they are comfy. Still raining.

Fri. Apr. 14

Rained most all night & at midnight came down hard. We are so grateful and Dad planted corn & beans. & I put in flower seed. and it came down pretty hard ab’t 3 P.M. and is at it again now. 9. Emily came over & we got letters off. Ngoiboni will go tomorrow. Nyakeiru went today for vegs too & post.

Sat. Apr. 15

Sun. Apr. 16

More rain P.M. & eve. Marimi staid in all day as he slept little & his face is badly swelled. Emily did roast while we were in meeting. Mulungit took the whole hr. & then some. Susana wasn’t out. Seems she & the fellow in the house near hers are having a lot to do with one another. Wonder why Olenaisho doesn’t interfere.

Mon. Apr. 17

Rained much of the night and A.M. but we washed & all got dry. Sat. Milaun came & brot Chas’s sweater. & then went again as he may stay with his people only. Ngoiboni brot mail. Eriks had letter from the folks. They may be back by Xmas. Rained again this eve. Erik caught some very nice fish. Ready for break.

Tues. Apr. 18

Rained all night again & is at it now too. I sowed a few more seeds and set out tomatoes. Had mtg. 25 women out tho it rained much of the time. Boys ironed & Ida did extras. The nice fish Eriks caught last night were partly eaten by cats. He tried for more today but rained so much. There was lovely glow & brilliant rainbow at sunset.

Wed. Apr. 19

Dad is bringing down wood these days. & we need it. every thing is so wet. That house over there leaks more than it ever did before too. Went to school & tested some of the children to see how much they could read. Sitoyas 2 are both learning well. Nemolel comes quite steady now too. Prayer mtg tonight.

Thur. Apr. 20

No one thot ab’t my birthday so I didn’t say any thing either. Rained some this PM but not very hard. so I had sewing class. Raining pretty hard now. They went fishing & caught such a lot so had some for supper & lots for break. & for their boy and for cats & chickens. Do hope we can go to Narok tomorrow & get things we need.

Fri. Apr. 21

Posted the picture to Ray and what mail was ready. & got mail. magazines & home letters & one from Helen H. so appreciated things I sent. Got mushrooms on way home so had good supper & they caught a lot of fish so we had some of them too & plenty for breakfast. only a shower ab’t 4.

Sat. Apr. 22

No rain til this eve. & then not much. Baked and cleaned. They came over for music so I knitted. am turning the heel. so will get it done some time. Started a letter to girls as I’ve been thinking so much ab’t home in Hooppole. Emma Brants wrote of changes made in house & barns.

Sun. Apr. 23

Lovely sunny day. None of them came to church & all rested this P.M. so Chas came over with them for a sing tonight & little service. Kamoni brot mail. German and Italian warships around Gibraltar. Looks like trouble. They surely are inviting it.

Mon. Apr. 24

Washed. Women put clay plaster on walls at school building. Clothes all got dry & as it didn’t look very rainy at 3 P.M. we decided to take supper out. but had just driven up near air drome & finished eating when it came down pretty hard. We got mushrooms & a rabbit. wrote letter.

Thot we might camp next week but it rained hard down Narok valley.

Sat. Apr. 29

Baked and cleaned. Worked at S.S. lesson. Ab’t 4 there seemed to be big excitement just at bend of road. Then we were told a lion had got an ox. just at top of hill. Erik & Dad & boys & guns went. Then they fixed places up a tree to watch. thot that better than trap. Ngoiboni is there too with gun. It’s 9:30 & none have returned. Dad didn’t go. Finished girls’ letter.

Sun. Apr. 30

Erik came home just after 10. Lions came twice but were too suspicious to come near bait. so got no shot at ‘em. Ngoiboni left to tell folks to get meat & when they got back the lions had been there & ate the stomach. And they staid around til 5 A.M. Too bad they didn’t get them. such a good moon too.

Wed. May 24

Doing as last year. [arrow to previous year “writing the boys’ letters”] Also copied directions for little knit dresses for Betty. from Ivy’s book. K. went down to help Mr C. with car. Washed lots of sheets & table linen. Ida staid with K’s girl til they went over. We had prayermtg. Then talked til late. The the girl goes up to Morimas house for the night.

Thur. May 25

Mulungit went for post. Letter from Agnes saying they don’t think they can come for Aug. as Mother can’t stand the trip, & she doesn’t want to leave her. Rays also wrote. they are fine. Sometimes they wonder if So. Af. trip is wise. We’ll see. Dad & Ken took lunch & went up river. The pretty picnic place at big spring is all spoiled.

Fri. May 26

Ngoiboni brot tomy. We got away for hot springs by 9:15 or so. The plains are alive with game now. Bonham is shooting zebra and wildebeest but there are still hundreds. After lunch Dad & Ken climbed the hill. A Masai passed & showed us a big black mamba on a stump sunning himself. but shortly afterwards he crawled into his hole. Shot a bustard.

Sat. May 27

Morima cleaned and baked bread yesterday so he could go with Wangare to Narok. She goes to Kijabe. I baked pies, cheese & beans. Then this P.M. worked at baby dresses. Ivy helped a lot. This eve had Rigoletto. worked at shirring for smocking. Mr. C. has a guest so didn’t come up. Very cloudy but no rain.

Sun. May 28

Ken took Musa to Narok services as Oleteega had asked him to preach but some one else did it. Mail was in by 11 so Ken was back for dinner. Thank God there is a remittance & I can pay up some things. More Congo mail. It just seems to come any time. One from Mrs Chilson and from Miss Brown. Had good sing. Little sprinkle.

Mon. May 29

Kenneths got away ab’t 10. Mr. Clarke called right after & chatted awhile. Asked him up to supper. He came. Has his farm up for sale. He sent leg of mutton & young wildebeest up. Had mutton tonight. Sitoya started school today. Washed most every thing. Sort of looked for Earls.

Tues. May 30

I weeded some. found more of Sara’s seeds growing. It rained quite hard last night. but nothing tonight yet. Womens mtg. Sitoya went for whooping cough medicine. Their 3 girls are very sick with it. Morima wants to keep on working so will let Ida stop. Wrote Elizabeth Johnson tonight.

Wed. May 31

Spent some time at school & did many odd jobs. Couldn’t pay Morima but will get cash tomorrow. Mr & Mrs Low and Mr C. came up for tea. They are at C’s for dinner which they are likely having now 8:45. Then they’ll go home to Rotian. It’s very cold out tonight. I’m glad I can go to bed.

Rather a hectic mo. but again, like last year, enjoyed having them here. Wish Eriks could have staid longer. Hope we still get some rain. tho can’t expect much in June. Lettuce is pretty nice but would like heads. Full moon & snappy cold.

Thur. June 1

Yes, I remember a year ago, very well. [excursion to Salt Swamp] Letter from Ivy says Earls are back. Went via Ravine, so we’ll not watch for them any longer. Ida isn’t coming to work now. Saw sugar tin has been opened. I suspected Ida. but she’s not here. It makes me feel very badly for Morima has always been so trust worthy. To Clarkes for sup. & radio. but not much good radio.

Fri. June 2

Very warm last night & sprinkled but not much. Didn’t say any thing to Morima as nothing has been touched today. I’ve been here most of the time. Worked at Bettys dresses this P.M. Its lots of fun, to smock & embroider. Have even started the peach sweater. So sorry John’s checker game hasn’t arrived for tomorrow. Lo sent it.

Sat. June 3

Baked cookies and pie. Mr. C. came for supper. M. took letters & brot back word that there was a bag at Hajee Aboos too heavy for him to bring. He took Sh 3. for stamps but brot for only 1.50 so must send again. We had roast chicken stuffed, lima beans, corn on cob, turnips & 3 in 1 salad: cheese, carrot, beet. Pie (dried apple) cocoa - & I guess we all ate pretty heartily. Twas good.

Sun. June 4

Cloudy most all day but no sign of rain. Mu. and So. staid to communion and I’m not very happy ab’t it, but I’ve prayed so much for them the Lord will have to undertake. I’ve talked to M. too but he just agrees with me in all I say. & goes ahead his own way. No wonder our church is no stronger with such leaders. Morimas dowry shauri is not yet finished so he isn’t coming either.

Mon. June 5

M. washed. Njoki went for post and groceries. Mu. went to see ab’t mistake with stamps. He looks awful these days & I believe the Lord is dealing with him. I get all worked up ab’t him & Soibi and their disrespect for the church. If they can come to communion without confessing their sins so can Susana. Had supper at Clarkes & radio.

Tues. June 6

I spent most A.M. at school as Sitoya and Tabisa went to Narok & took my letters. Then this PM was womens meeting. ab’t 25 out. Tabisa came but very late. We had prayer meeting mostly. Clarke came as we were eating supper and wanted us to come down with him and music. We went - but course didn’t eat. I finished Ray’s sock. and started to redo the top of the first one.

Wed. June 7

Wrote boys this A.M. while Dad was at wood. Clarke here to supper. Dad talks about my going home with the children and he staying out here. but I don’t want to at all. If there isn’t money to take us both home then I think we should both stay. Worked at Betty’s dresses this P.M. The pink is ab’t finished. the slips are both stitched up too. Dad has gone down with Mr. C. for radio news.

Thur. June 8

M. went for post. Thot sure the parcel would come but it didn’t tho letter from Aunt A. & several others from USA came. Morima put wash on the wall above fire place & below window so all looks nice again. Sewing this P.M. Got so dark in N.E. but no rain. Garden needs it badly. M. brot maradufu so now I can make Dad a suit of pyjamas. his are in rags.

Fri. June 9

Worked at Betty’s dresses this P.M. It does take a lot of time. Used the typewriter some. finished boys letters and typed more S.S. work. Mr C. expected the D.C. this eve so he couldn’t come up. but D.C. didn’t come.

Sat. June 10

Baked lemon pie. Lows and Scallans were at C’s for tea then we went down for supper and radio. Heard announcers in N.Y. telling ab’t the Kings and Queen going to Manhattan. we could hear the cheering. Gave me quite a thrill for perhaps some of the folks heard it too. I’ve finished Bettys pink dress & slip and R’s stockings. Want to send the parcel next week.

Sun. June 11

Mr. C. brot mail. A slip saying parcel is there. Sh. 6 customs. 2 of my pictures are in the paper this week & I got sh 10 for ‘em. Asked Ruth W. today if Susana seems at all repentant & she says No. & that she thinks she’s right to take communion if Mu. & Soibie do. & I agree with her too. Letter from Ray - all well.

Mon. June 12

It does get so dark but no rain and the garden is getting very dry. The parcel came today. 2 games and such lovely cloth - all crinkly - just the thing for traveling. Lo surely doesn’t do things by halves. Writing paper too. Mu. said today that they couldn’t spare Ida for work here. so guess we’ll keep Morima on as we want him for Nairobi any way. Washed. have started peach sweater. J’s right wrist is badly swelled again. & the left one is better. What can it be. Tried a game Mr C. won!

Tues. June 13

These are not “lovely June” days. So dark and cold. like 2 yrs ago at Lasit when Mr Whitehouse said he got so depressed. Had such a good mtg today. The Spirit works I’m sure. but Susana sits back & is glum. Don’t see why she comes at all. Am putting things together for in Ray’s parcel. Saw nothing of Mr. C. today. Spent time at school & preparing busy work. Finished home letter tonight.

Wed. June 14

John’s arm continues swelled but not so hard. Mr. C. will take him to Narok tomorrow as the European Dr. has come. Morima will go & bring back meat. Mr Bonham is at C’s tonight. I set out more tomatoes today. Sewed quite a bit at the white dress. So much hand work takes time. but it’s fun. Washed my hair - cut Dads.

Thur. June 15

Men went ab’t 10. Morima too & he was to return at once. and while I was at sewing class he came. said the men picked him up as he was coming back. Dr gave Jno a needle & said swelling should go down by morning. doesn’t think it’s filaria. Mail came. “News” from Scuds. for Nov. Clarke here to supper.

Fri. June 16

Jno’s wrists weren’t swelled this morning but are itching this eve. To Clarkes for supper. Radio news not good Japs are getting very saucy to Eng. & threatening. Saw some big fish in pool but couldn’t catch any thing but talapia - which we had for supper. Finished B’s dresses. Knitting at sweater now.

Sat. June 17

Canned 2 qts green beans. With no rain I’m afraid they’ll soon dry up. & they are good now. Wanted C. to come for supper but he expected Bonham. but we don’t think he came. Got the parcel packed and list made out. Will send some one Mon. & to bring Shs. which Bacchu didn’t have on Thur.

Sun. June 18

Services as usual. Wanted to go to some nearby kraal but women say there are none around here now. Then many women have to watch gardens these days too. Worked at S.S. lessons. Mr. C. brot our mail. Letter from Esther A. but too busy to tell of the good time they had in congo. Wrote Emily this P.M.

Mon. June 19

Wish I could record [arrow drawn to previous year “Fairly nice rain tonight.”] It stays cloudy & cold til noon. Then P.M. sun comes out. but no drop of rain. Beans are on fine but wont last long. Nyakeiru went to Narok & brot books and meat & money but no asphalt. We do want to fix the tank as we need the water badly. Mr C. here to supper.

Tues. June 20

Saw nothing of Mr. C. all day but for fear he’ll ask us down tomorrow night we had prayer mtg tonight. Canned 3 qts beans. Wish I had more jars to fill. Am going to put corn into a couple. and want to pickle some beans too. Am also going to try drying some corn. none in our garden but am buying. M’s baby is pretty sick.

Wed. June 21

Nyakeiru brot baby this eve. I’m afraid of pneumonia as she breathes very short. Had sort of spasm I guess from what they said. I told her to take her to hospital tomorrow. Cut out Johns pyjamas of maradufu. We had soup supper at C’s & fish. Couldn’t get London news for some reason. Finished my dark rayon & all mending done too. Talked a bit with Mu. he said he’d talk with us later.

Thur. June 22

John’s left hand was so swelled and he slept little as it ached. so ab’t 9:30 he went to C’s and asked if he’d take him to Dr again. He did & Dr gave him another needle. says he can’t find any thing wrong tho. Thinks it must be poison. They took lunch & went to Hot Springs. Morima went to Narok too. Nice letter from Ray. C. here to supper. Both went for news. As Eng. has sent food ships to Tientsin & destroyers as guards. Wonder what Japs say to that. Had talk with Susana. hope she was sincere.

Fri. June 23

Went to see baby. She’s a pretty sick child. pneumonia I’m sure. M. went to see if Mr C. was going in but he didn’t. but says he’ll go tomorrow. Had supper there tonight. and news. Japs are getting very demanding & ordered ships away. but they refused to leave so Japs said ‘twas just “friendly solicitude” & not demand. Wrote Mrs Davis. will send with Sitoya. Pickled beans & canned 2 pts corn & got some cut & ready to dry.

Sat. June 24

Right after breakfast M. came & said they had taken babe to hospital yesterday P.M. & Nyakeiru had just come back & said baby died ab’t 4 A.M. She was alone & had no fire nor light & she knew she had a convulsion & N. wanted hot water. but there was no one around to help. no one on night duty. ‘Twas pretty hard on Nyakeiru. I hope it is a means of drawing them both nearer to God. Mr C. here to supper. Finished sewing J’s pyjamas.

Sun. June 25

Usual meetings. Beginning Sessions on Life of Paul in S.S. as outlined in S.S. Times. Sitoya preached so earnestly. but tho Susana was there she didn’t say any thing. My, I hope she is sincere when she tells me she wants to do right. Went up to see Nyakeiru. Amogi’s mother was there. N. doesn’t feel hard because God took baby. She’s very worn & thin & coughs. Started reading Genesis by C.H.M.

Mon. June 26

Mr. C. brot mail last night but as M. was going to Narok I asked him to post a letter to Shaffers & ask if a parcel came for us. but he said Bacchu says there was nothing. I knitted some at sweater & mended. Mr C. here to supper. Isn’t going til Thur. so will come up every night til he goes.

Tues. June 27

Mr C. up to lunch and supper but says Bonham will be here tomorrow night so he wont come up. Women’s mtg. Susana was there but hung her head much of the time. Ruth W. says she hasn’t stopt her bad doings. They don’t go to her house - only greet her on path. I’m so sorry. After Sitoyas searching words on Sun. all expected her to stand but she didn’t.

Wed. June 28

Wrote the boys. Then just after lunch a note came from C. asking to come up for supper as Bonham isn’t coming. Ab’t 4 it started to rain & came down good for 45 min. Twill do lots of good. Mr C. leaves in the morning and Bacchu takes boxes boxes next day. Mr. C. did not smoke at all this eve. We wonder why not.

Thur. June 29

Ruth W. went for mail and a few groceries and finally the asphalt came too. They only got here at dark as the post was late. Nice mail. I gave ‘em a lantern to go home with - over to the Ngosor. Lo wrote Francis Zeller died. Had not been well for some time. but not serious. His heart gave out.

Fri. June 30

Bacchu came early and got boxes. We didn’t go down. Fixed up geraniums at west end of porch as they were blown down. Cut at quilt blocks. as many are needed in sewing class & I want to take what I want first. M. came early to get sup. then went fishing til time and got enuf for break. All bills settled - Thank God.

We don’t know yet when we’ll be going to Nairobi. This mo. has been cold and cloudy. but Wed. warmed up & rained and last night too so things are well watered and we are thankful. Miss Rhodes has returned. Wonder where she’ll work.

Sat. July 1

And now we’ve started on the last half of this year. usual Sat. work. but this P.M. I cut quilt blocks. There are so many nice left over pieces of cloth. so I’m using some and cutting some for sewing class. A number of white folks were down fishing this eve. Don’t know who only one was the Dr. Dad said. They didn’t come up.

Sun. July 2

Paul H’s have asked A.I.M. to take over their dist.

Tues. July 4

Glorious Fourth. Tho nothing very special took place. except Jno put the asphalt in tank & hope it stops leaking now. and then at break. said he had a plan. Why not ask Council to let us leave here abt Dec 1 & go to Ruwenzori for Xmas & have Rays come there & we stay there til we go home! Something to think ab’t and pray ab’t too.

Just a bit after 11 Davises from Kijabe & Linnells also came in & all staid to lunch & back for tea. Twas awfully nice to see Linnells. but the crowd, with all else Miss S. was trying to do - was too much for her. She’s very tired tonight. No one rested so we’re all ready to turn in early. Seems impossible we’ll be home tomorrow night.

Sat. Aug. 12

Dad went down town early for Miss S. I went ab’t 11 for my dress. It’s awful nice. Johnsons didn’t come til noon. Then we didn’t leave til 2. at Kjb had to change tire. and again in Kidong. All rested this P.M. Nioki will go for post tomorrow. Had Keswick add. & then some gramaphone music. I started letter to Jessie.

Mon. Aug. 14

Ida came to help but we didn’t wash. Wanjiku gathered the ripe beans. I unpacked & cleaned. Letters from Cl. & Ray. Cl. says Williams go to Ruwenzori and the Press has already gone to Aba. Ray says come to Conf. & stay at Bafuka til Oct. & all go down the Nile home. Mrs Van D. is very ill. thot to be cancer of brain.

Tues. Aug. 15

Washed - and tho twas dark & cloudy all got dry. Rained some during the night last night. I’m so sorry I forgot to say anything to Miss S. ab’t Bradford’s birthday. Dad and Norman went fishing over lunch. Brot a nice lot home. lots of black ones. Womens meeting. No one was prepared to lead so I did.

Wed. Aug. 16

Ironed & with Ida’s help got done by noon. Baked corn muffins & ate almost all for dinner. Had mutton stew & dumplings. Wrote the boys. Got baked beans and other things ready for a picnic lunch tomorrow. perhaps up at Lows. & then we’ll bring mail. Checkers are very popular these nights.

Thur. Aug. 17

We finally decided to go up under the cedar trees for lunch. It was cloudy all day. As the mail lorry didn’t come, & Mr. Low is sick in hospital we went to sports field & ate tea. then found the lorry had to wait for some one coming by P.M. train. so got things we needed & came home. Started Chas birthday letter while others played C.C.

Fri. Aug. 18

Some one was going to Narok & brot mail. Letter from Shaffers says he has a good truck & is ready to take us to Congo. The 3 play Chinese Checkers every night & usually pretty late. Read the prayer letter and had prayer. Decided to close school today. & then begin again Sept. 20.

Sat. Aug. 19

Men went to Ngosor falls fishing. I baked pie, beans, pudding, bread & biscuits. Made jelly like Miss Slater makes, beating it as it sets & adding cream. Men brot a lot of black fish & shenzis but we gave all to cats, dog, & chickens. I had back of Johnny’s sweater ab’t 3 in. above ribbing then found it too large. so ripped it all. Writing Chas birthday.

Sun. Aug. 20

Nice number out to service. Several boys from Narok. We stay up so late these days or nights, that a P.M. rest seems necessary. Worked at S.S. lessons too. Dismissed Wanjiku as Nyakeiru says Ida can stay on. Read Keswick address & then talked. Rained a bit.

Mon. Aug. 21

Morima came - Ida did all rubbing. Men got in wood but Norman is tearing his hair to get home. Wants her to stay & he go & then come back & get her but she doesn’t want that & I don’t blame her. I’ve thot about going to school but as we closed on Fri. it wasn’t necessary. Worked a bit in garden. Finished Chas letter.

Tues. Aug. 22

Baked while Morima ironed. The 3 play C. Checks every night. I wrote money rec’d letter tonight & then got a game or two in too, before bed time but it’s always 9:30 before we go to bed. Had womens mtg at 11 but none came from Milili. Dinner was very late, consequently. Spose Guildings are going to the coast today.

Wed. Aug. 23

Went to monkey cave for lunch. Sitoya took letters & brot Dr’s that we were looking for Mon. Guess the driver must have brot it. We certainly were before Council this time 6 or 8 times. Jno is Dist. Supt. in Kendalls place til end of year. They have sent our desire to “retire from Kenya Field” to home Council! We’re sorry ab’t that for we didn’t mean we don’t want work. but we feel some one else should come here to Syabei. We’re to go to Nairobi Sept. 18 - Oct. 31.

Thur. Aug. 24

Guess Guildings are on the briney deep by now. Made orange marmalade & cooked up dried corn & lima beans for succotash. Good. Didn’t send for mail as sports are on tomorrow & we’ll drive over. Sewing class but they didn’t expect it. Think I better keep on as we can’t have it in Sept. & Oct.

Fri. Aug. 25

We 3 went to Narok after dinner but races weren’t much as these are just preliminary. better ones tomorrow but the Dist. ones are next Fri. & Sat. Got mail. Nice letter from Ray. Mr. Nixon also wrote saying he has written Mr. Richardson F.D. [Field Director] at Aba asking ab’t our going to Ruwenzori! Now we’ll see what comes of it.

Sat. Aug. 26

Baked a bit then picniced for lunch at Perrott place. The river is very high. Heavy rains up in the hills. Rained here this eve too. The 3 always play C. Checkers & then when I finish my letter I play a game or 2. Wrote Mrs Hargrave.

Sun. Aug. 27

Robinson & his singers sang also the Milili bunch. So 4 languages were used in the meeting. We read from Keswick addresses. Then sat & talked but are getting to bed early. Mr J. wants to go to Nairobi tomorrow but she wants to go to Kijabe only. She wants to see Dr. D.

Mon. Aug. 28

They got off by 10:30. Got all linen washed up. Mr. J. kept hustling things into the car & then last thing had to change wheels. Had tea before they went. Kinda nice to be alone again. But got letter from Esther they are coming by Sat. or so. Rather expect they’ll keep house.

Tues. Aug. 29

Womens meeting Ana of Kesoi led. Morima was half thro ironing when he got a hard chill. had complained of his head & back aching. so I sent him home. & will keep Ida on. Maybe he will go to Narok on Thur. & see Dr. & get post. Hope he will soon be back at work.

Wed. Aug. 30

Morima came to work but I sent him home as he looked ill. Ida helps well. Wrote boys. Worked at n. gown. smocked in red. We wonder what is going on in Europe. Sent letters by Njoki. Milaun pesters us much these days. Woke up with bad head. Took aspirin at noon & slept. better now.

Thur. Aug. 31

Morima brot mail. Saw Dr. who gave him 2 shots besides medicine so he can’t work for a few days. He brot word that war is on. Gov’t is nabbing all useful young men. Wambui came with her new baby & says trains are all loaded bringing folks to Nairobi. Thot sure Earls were coming but the lorry turned into Clarkes. Letters from Lo & Al. $1. bill in Lo’s. Perhaps that’s an earnest of what’s coming. Hope so. It’s been a long long time since I couldn’t pay up help & milk on last day.

We may not get to Nairobi this yr tho all has been arranged. Maybe Miss S wont want to go to coast if war is on. We do want to know particulars. Hope Earls come tomorrow & tell us. Kendalls were at Mulango on way to M. to sail today.
Wonder if they sailed. It seems awful to think of war on again.

Fri. Sept. 1

No Earls yet. Notice 2 yrs ago! [wondering why Earls hadn’t showed up yet] That seems to be their way. Boiled a lot of loquats & drained & will make jelly tomorrow. Finished blue crepe n. gown. Do spend a good bit of time in kitchen as Ida can’t do all. She got wood cut & stove all cleaned for baking tomorrow.

Sat. Sept. 2

Wonder what sort of a birthday Lora is having. Baked bread & buns & made lemon pie & jelly and soup for got a nice bone. some one butchered. Wrote on type writer to Aunts this P.M. Morima is better but not peppy & as long as we’re alone Ida can do the work, for Earls haven’t come yet & we’ve had no more war news.

Sun. Sept. 3

Kamoni brot mail. Ken wrote Earl went to ask D.C. if it’s alright for ‘em to come & he said no, only on biz. So they aren’t coming now. We’re disappointed. Miss Slater writes she’ll not go to M. and no doubt will not want to come to town. Course we don’t if there’s any danger. No money yet. Paper is full of war preparation but nothing was doing til Fri. 10 A.M. Hitler declared he would have Poland. We don’t know what Italy is doing.

Mon. Sept. 4

Kamoni brot medicines. Mediterranean is closed. so we wonder where Guildings are. also Kendalls if they sailed Thur. Ida washed. Tried to fish with traps but got only tiny ones. Cleaned up the house at edge of woods & will tell the women they can come there to pray any time they want to. I will use it too. Brot most things from guest house over here. Dr McLean called to Nairobi.

Tues. Sept. 5

We ironed. I canned 1 ½ qts tomatoes. Had womens meeting at 11. but no one came from Milili. I’m realizing if I ever want to get rugs made now’s the time to get at it. Wrote letters this eve as Nyakeiru will go tomorrow. Told Morima we’re not going to Nairobi & he better look for work elsewhere.

Wed. Sept. 6

One of the quietest days we’ve had in a long time. Just doing a lot of little extras. & getting rags ready for hooked rug. Asked Bachu to let us know what the war news is & he simply replied he had no radio! Well, we can’t alter things much even if we know what’s up.

Thur. Sept. 7

Sort o’ disappointed in Mr Nixons letter tonight which brings reply from Mr. Campbell. but not the Com. that they don’t think we should go to Ruwenzori. not that I want to go there but I fear they’ll say - if you want to retire come home. Well maybe we’ll go up. Shaffers have been asked to leave Lasit & so may come out here. if D.C. allows.

Fri. Sept. 8

No Shaffers yet - which looks like they may not get permission. Then we’re wondering how long we’ll be left alone. Canned 1 ½ qts loquats. Worked at hooked rug. am using shuttle so it should go faster. Morima will likely go to Narok tomorrow. and bring reg. parcel. Can’t imagine what it is.

Sat. Sept. 9

Morima got the reg. letter from Helen Hurlburt enclosing Francs. for which she wants wool for sweater for Paul. My, I wish I were in town now to see what I could get. Worked at rug after helping with the cleaning. Didn’t bake much. Corn bread only.

Sun. Sept. 10

Putuputu brot mail. Letters from Shaffer & Earl. both are going to try to come out this week. Wonder if they’ll succeed. Also letter fro Claudon. Shot another elephant way away at an outschool. Nyakeiru & Tabisa came & we had a little pray mtg in the house at edge of woods. Told ‘em come there any time.

Mon. Sept. 11

Wanjiku did most washing. I helped some but she did very well. Last night when I went to bed found there must have been a bit of hemmorrage. Haven’t felt badly but am trying not to lift or do straining things. took a per douche. The sun is terribly hot these days. milk is thick by supper time. No one here yet.

Tues. Sept. 12

As busy as we were a year ago just that alone and regular we are this yr. I’m not sorry & I think Jno is enjoying it too. Being so short of money would make it very hard if others were here. No word of any one coming as yet. Good womens’ mtg. Martha led. She’ll take letters tomorrow.

Wed. Sept. 13

Martha took the letters. Very warm and cloudy this morn. Milk sour. raining this eve. Not much but enuf to cool off. Had nice long undisturbed prayer time today. Neither of the women came while I was there. Wrote the boys & worked at rug.

Thur. Sept. 14

Sitoya came this morning & said Masagondi died last eve & Oimeru wanted some of the Mission folks at the burial. So he etc went but when they came back this eve he said they were too late. I’m sorry. Letter from Cora Huston only. Some papers. No money. This is last direct home mail. other will come via South.

Fri. Sept. 15

Mo. is half gone! Canned 1 qt tomatoes. also one of loquats & have juice ready for jelly. Would do more but am very short of sugar. The far tree has lovely large ones. This near one has lots of small ones. The birds are finishing them all fast. Milaun has been so trying today coming in for lots of silly things. This P.M. John just kept chasing him off the hill all P.M. People say he is alright in his mind but just wants food so pretends to be silly.

Sat. Sept. 16

Dad had a real bout with Milaun & called the elders & made him get out of his house - pack up his things in a bag & get. He said he was going to Ole Tuga’s. We’ll see. Such a day. I tried baking a bit. We had dinner pretty late, as they were chasing after M. Got him ab’t 2 when Dad was resting. I hope he’s gone for good.

Sun. Sept. 17

Milaun never left at all. He’s living in Partaris house! Was in meeting. but behaved himself pretty well. Had nice prayer time with Nyakeiru and Tabisa. Letter from Ray & pictures. so nice. Betty is growing. This is the last day of their Dungu Conf. Hope they’ve had a blessed time. Now Mr Paul goes with his evangs to Ray’s distict for a mo.

Mon. Sept. 18

School opened but not many out. If more don’t come we’ll not keep up long. Wrote Bells to come for Xmas & Cl. Wanjiku has been helping herself to tea. I marked the tin & Know it was meddled with. I’ll have Morima talk to her. She washed - but not much of it.

Tues. Sept. 19

Johnny’s 3rd birthday. One surely never knows what a day may bring forth. I was setting table for supper when Earls & Mr. Shaffer drove in. Earls got permission & S is going to see the D.C. if they can come to N. Ngare & Narok. He got plenty of petrol. Wants so much to go to Congo. but wants to go by Dec. 1. at least. No one seems able to get money now so we hope when it is possible we’ll have some there to get.

Wed. Sept. 20

Earl took Mr. S. to Narok & didn’t get back til 2. They fished tonight so we have nice lot for break. They want to get break. by themselves & eat over here other times. We’re trying to get Morima to come for while they’re here. Then twill be alright. I’m very tired tonight. They’re pretty well settled.

Thur. Sept. 21

Men went fishing all day. We’ve asked Morima to come help us. on faith. going halves on his wages. Took Wanjiku home as it was late. Then as Milaun followed us. she wouldn’t let me come back alone but got her sister & 2 bros. to come along. I stopt at school for a bit. 12 were out. Milaun came to trouble us at sewing class but I whacked him with a stick so hope he stays away now.

Fri. Sept. 22

Went to school A.M. & night & helpt with singing. Busy in kitchen rest of time. We baked bread & it wasn’t out when M. had finished so I came back from quiet time early. Nice to have M. back again. Kamoni brot post. only 1 letter from Slater. Earls got several.

Sat. Sept. 23

Baked while M. cleaned. Mostly all done by noon. & bathed. Men went hunting up on plain so had early supper. Got 3 guineas. I worked at rug a bit & went for long walk. Men playing checkers. Wrote Miss Slater will send tomorrow when Kamoni gets post. So windy these days.

Sun. Sept. 24

Kamoni went for the post. All services as usual. Tabisa came for prayer. Milaun sat back in church & acted alright. He wasn’t here yesterday either. A card from Dr D. says he & S’s are at Nairaq Ngare & will come here tomorrow. S’s will stay in the little guest house.

Mon. Sept. 25

They came in just in time for lunch. I had rather expected them. so was ready. Worked in kitchen all A.M. as Morima was washing. I scrubbed out the guest house. They all ate lunch here & then we all ate supper over there - roast potatoes & corn & tomatoes & brown bread & butter & cake. Then radio. heard the Gov. Sir Robt Brooke Popham give his farewell add. as he leaves to help in air force in Eng.

Tues. Sept. 26

Things went very wrong today. Mrs S. was to lead the women’s meeting but because of what Dad said she refused to help. Lots of women came expecting her message. I can’t see why such things keep coming up. I’ve told Dr. we’re leaving here by end of yr. Dad is in no physical or mental condition to keep on here. S’s say unless things among us are cleared up they will leave. I wish we’d staid in Congo when we were there.

Wed. Sept. 27

Little rain this eve. Shaffers had break. here & got away by 8:30. Dr. too as he went on lorry. News last night said Warsaw has fallen & Poland was being divided between Germany & Russia. Poor Poles. Doesn’t the Lord See? we might almost ask. He surely has much patience and we’re very grateful He has. Dad & Earl went up river. Brot 3 fish! Prayer mt’g . Music. I wrote boys today.

Thur. Sept. 28

I went to school & Sitoya went for post but Kamoni brot it. S. took toms [tomatoes] to Mrs S. & our letters. Dad wrote Mr. S. but Sitoya some how missed the boy with the reply. Quite a bunch of letters. Amstutz wants things from Nairobi. thinking we are there. Mrs. Van D. is still very low. tho better some days. All well in Calif. H. Downings are getting ready to come. Still no money for us.

Fri. Sept. 29

While we were at top of falls for picnic lunch Kuyoni brot S’s letters to us. We thot he had returned so didn’t reply - will send on Sun. Jno must have written ab’t things we’ve been talking ab’t for S’s feel badly & think they can explain everything. Mr. S. has written Nixon asking the Com. to come soon as possible. I’m so sorry ab’t it all.

Sat. Sept. 30

Nothing is “settled peaceably” these days. [line drawn to previous year’s entry “...the Chzeck question has been settled peaceably for the present.”] as Poland knows. Baked & stewed & cleaned. The men went down river but got nothing. I had a searching time myself and believe there is nothing between me & God. by His help I want to show forth His love by being sympathetic, loving & Kind instead of arguing and scolding.

I wrote Mrs. Shaffer. and I do certainly pray the misunderstandings may soon be cleared up. My heart is heavy because of the part I’ve played in it; but I believe God has forgiven and will give grace daily. Sept. is ended and still no money. Why this long test? Until end of Aug. it’s been a long time since we were unable to pay all bills. May He keep us faithful even if Hab. 3:17 is true.

Sun. Oct. 1

Rained a nice shower. Kamoni brot post but no reply from Shaffers. said Kuyoni was coming. We were very much saddened by Sitoya’s report that Mr S. read Jno’s letter to the natives! & they had a big shauri all night. Wonder why as most of it didn’t concern them at all. Maybe I haven’t been praying enuf. Letter from Nixon enclosing Mr Richardson’s reply ab’t Ruwenzori. It’s alright for us to go. Wish we were there now.

Mon. Oct. 2

Washed. Kashisha brot S’s letter this eve and the Kikuyu books we wanted. Miss Slater wants to go to Coast if allowed. but thinks house better be closed. We do too. tho I have list of things to get for Amstutz. Mr. S. said nothing ab’t having told natives. but ours are quite worked up over it; don’t know where their sympathy is tho I think with S’s. Tabisa came to pray.

Tues. Oct. 3

A wire from Nixon says the Com. will be out on Fri.: Kenneth, Dr. & he. Mrs. S. also wrote to let us know. Jno has invited them to come over here & eat with us while the folks are here. also he & Sitoya have suggested a program for Sun. I hope they’ll come over on Thur or Fri. Mr S. has gone to Narosero today. back tomorrow. good womens mtg.

Wed. Oct. 4

Letters from S’s saying they don’t think it’s best to come over. as the Com. are coming to look into things there. Jno & Earl went up stream & Milaun seemed to know it so was awful - pestering us all day - even going into Earl’s house. He followed us this eve when we went for a walk & Dad finally took the shot gun & chased him home with it.

Thur. Oct. 5

Morima went for post & told Mr S. more words ab’t Milaun & he went to D.C. who sent eskaris for him but found him at S’s camp so got him there. So thankful. The same is true these days [arrow drawn to previous yr. entry: “We do so need heart searching & cleansing.”] & more so. how I do pray God may guide during the days before us. Sewing class today. so got nothing done at rug. Beds ready.

Fri. Oct. 6

They came ab’t 2. were at Earls when I came from prayer. Had tea & then they went to Narok to persuade Shaffers to come for the night as things between us had to be gone over. We talked until 11:30. Mr. S. accusing of many things. God knows all ab’t it & so it seems needless to argue. The Com. are very patient & helpful.

Sat. Oct. 7

Called Sitoya & talked til after 10. Then all went to Narok. we 3 here. I finished rug - after baking some. Ab’t 5:30 Dad comes walking - & I knew something was wrong. he said the speaker - Siongo accused him of all sorts of things & he wouldn’t let Dad explain a thing. so Dad came away. They came ab’t 10 min. after he did. I’m so sorry. They S. not only read our private letters to natives but told them every thing & more than has ever come between us families.

Sun. Oct. 8

Dr. & Mr N. went to 9 A.M. mtg at Narok & returned here for our mtg at 10:30. Kuyoni spoke. All rested (or tried to) but after supper I talked with Mr N. trying to explain things some what. He gave me right in some but mostly he was most sympathetic with Ss. Earl also had a talk with him then we had a sing & scripture & prayer. Some how things seem very tight & strained. I can’t read nor pray nor think.

Mon. Oct. 9

Had an awful night and bad head most all day. After break we all went onto veranda & just got started when Mr S. came. Talked and argued & asked “why” many times til noon. Dad said Ss should come here any time & take over & we’d just stay to end of year & then leave. but Mr. S. didn’t know if they could. So N. said finish at Narok go to Kilgoris & then out of reserve til New Year. Mr S. apologized for giving us trouble. so all is settled if Mrs S. is willing.

Tues. Oct. 10

The men were just well gone when Ss came. They got lumber & all their stuff & brot us radio. Mrs S. talked to women at mtg. They staid for supper waiting for men because we didn’t know if Earls battery could do it. It does. so we’ll have it here til they go to Kilgoris in 2 wks. or so. Big washing. Baking bread tomorrow. Slept hard last night but still sleepy.

Wed. Oct. 11

I’ve felt so bum today - just too tired to do much but yet baked bread & cake. Have called a woman to go tomorrow. News came over radio fine - but nothing very exciting. Have boys, Amstutz & Nixons letters ready. Dad too was very tired & went back to bed after break. saying it’s his Sun. I guess the doings over Sun took it out of us more than we thot.

Thur. Oct. 12

Sent a woman with the bread & to bring post but it came late & she didn’t wait. so we haven’t it. May try to get it Sat. Kashisha asked Earl to set a gun trap ab’t 4 P.M. Ab’t 7 a boy came with a note saying they had it & were skinning it there. News very clear tonite but nothing exciting. Writing home on typewriter.

Fri. Oct. 13

What a day for a birthday [Mary Slater’s] Fri. 13! Mrs. Kamoni went to town & brot mail & letter from Mr. S. a copy of what he sent to Nixon. It’s hard for us to understand their attitude. Cl. writes he shot an elephant & a buffalo. He has been put on Congo Council in Mr Uhlinger’s place. Mr. Bell would not. Mrs Van D. very low & seems to be losing out. Wrote several letters.

Sat. Oct. 14

John and Earl went down river with lunch. I was busy in kitchen til noon. Just can’t help thinking ab’t a week ago & how it rankles in my heart. I just want to leave all in His hands for He knows all about the “hurt”. All went fishing this eve & got enuf for breakfast. Got little blue sweater for Jessie half done. Work at it while we get radio news.

Sun. Oct. 15

Services as usual. Nyakeiru came to the guest house today. She said Ruth Wambui & Mrs Kamoni had a fuss & the husbands fined Ruth Sh. 5. I’m so sorry. and I’m most afraid to say any thing for fear they’ll accuse me of same!! Letter from Nixon says Miss Slater does not want to go on furlo now.

Mon. Oct. 16

Very windy so am tired. Sitoya wanted to go to Narok so I finished school for him. Kinyanjui came early & took bread, tomatoes & cake to Shaffers. also stone hammer. They want us to come next Mon & bring radio back & picnic. Earl shot the big gray cat tonight. There are too many to keep fed when we have no money. We had brot him from Lasit 2 yrs ago.

Tues. Oct. 17

Men came to hear Swahili news. A good number of women out this P.M. Eunice was there. Have asked her to talk to us next week if she can come. Radio says another ship sunk by submarine. Of the 1200 on board the Royal Oak that was sunk last week 810 were lost. Awful.

Wed. Oct. 18

Another ship sunk - 300 survivors saved. It seems terrible. some German planes flying over Scotland were shot down. Earl & Dad fished & got a nice lot so will send some to Shaffers. We ate supper down by the pond. Am working at crocheted rug. Rained a bit last eve but still very windy today.

Thur. Oct. 19

Kamoni & wife went for post & vegs. but came back saying lorry was late. Couldn’t wait. I’m disappointed for I feel sure there’ll be one from Raymonds. D.C. & Lows were down fishing. I came late from sewing & men came from tramp just in time for Swahili news. Njoroge only one who came for it. Wrote Mrs Westervelt.

Fri. Oct. 20

Prayer day. Betty is 1 yr. old. Bless her. The wife brot vegs. in basket & I gave ‘em a bag to put them in - and no mail. We’re all fed up with ‘em. She says she’ll bring it tomorrow. I’ve taken the letters over to school for Mposhi to give her to post. Hope she doesn’t forget ‘em. Mrs. S. sent a soup bone. Wrote the boys but will post Cl’s only as I’m sure there’ll be one from Ray tomorrow.

Sat. Oct. 21

And today the mail came and the letter from Ray. I posted Cl’s this morn & will now just continue Rays & a copy for Cl too. & post all on Thurs. A card from Mr. Nixon telling of Mrs. Van Dusen’s death 9 P.M. Oct. 3. Mr. was to go back to Aba the 15th. Baked 10 loaves of bread - 8 for Mrs S. Robinson came to try music lessons.

Sun. Oct. 22

Meetings as usual. R. was practicing early & can almost play Rock of Ages. Rested then went for prayer. Nyakeiru came. Had Cathedral services this eve. Hubert is not feeling well. has fever and cries much. Will take him to see Dr tomorrow. My thots are sure troblesome these days. We pray much for Mr Van D.

Mon. Oct. 23

Got away ab’t 10. Morima had washing most done. went to camp & unloaded then to hospital. Dr says tonsilitis. Lunched then men walked down Narok looking for guineas. Got back for tea but had none & went again to cedar trees. Got back for supper after 7. Listened to news & got home 9:30. Herbert very miserable. and all very tired. Got 3 guineas. only a book in mail.

Tues. Oct. 24

Forgot my bag that had key in but got in thro bed room door. Kamoni brot bag. Herbert seems much better. I slept long today but am still sleepy. Thur. Oct. 26

Almost no mail. Haven’t had home mail now for a long time. It will soon come surely. We’ve never before in our A.I.M. lives been without money for so long & been in debt too. It’s because of that debt that makes me feel so awful. but none was done foolishly. I’m sure it will soon come.

Fri. Oct. 27

Men went fishing all day. I went to school quite a while. So hot & windy. Locusts are camping here tonight. Sage brush is red with ‘em. nothing much to eat as gardens are dry. Finished rug. Washed hair & cut John’s too. Wrote Mr Gaylord. Sitoya will go tomorrow.

Sat. Oct. 28

Baked and cleaned as usual. Music tonight. Knitted at Johny’s red pants. Got quilt blocks lined up. and find I have enuf for one side. Rained ab’t supper time & Robinson came & practiced til dark. He learns quickly & I’m sure will soon be able to manage any hymn.

Sun. Oct. 29

Meetings as usual. Robinson practices before Sun. S. time. Asked Ruth Wambui ab’t their quarrel & she says she has made things right. Kamoni didn’t go to Narok so will get post tomorrow when he goes. Nyakeiru didn’t come to prayer. Perhaps she had folks at her house.

Mon. Oct. 30

So very windy today. Wash all ready to iron tomorrow. Men tried fishing but caught only a few. Don’t know why. Mended most all P.M. Letter from Mrs. McK. written Sept 3. Eight wks! hope our mail will soon begin to come more regular now. Wrote Al birthday letter.

Tues. Oct. 31

Nyakeiru spoke at women’s mtg. Very earnestly. As there was a good deal of ironing I got things ready for dinner and roasted the coffee Mrs Shaffer gave us. am very glad for it. Earls are talking of leaving next week & as Kenneths wanted to come while they are here they may come this week end.

The affairs of this mo. have been such that we hope will never be repeated again. And if any one had suggested last mo. something of the sort would happen I’d surely have said Impossible! I hope we’ve all learned some valuable lessons and that God will get more glory than otherwise possible.

Wed. Nov. 1

Got cloudy & tried to rain but not much came of it. Men tried fishing this A.M. but not very successful tho they could see big ones floating about. John isn’t very ambitious even today. Prayer meeting this eve.

Thur. Nov. 2

Thank God word from the office says $65- are coming. Hope we’ll hear from the Bank next mail day. Mulungit came & says Bessie of Mbaei is here. Geo. has paid for her. but she’s been a bad girl & I hoped Geo. would refuse her. Makes one’s heart sick that these young fellows can’t be allowed to live right & marry right. Man went fishing way down steam. all day Morima went to Narok.

Fri. Nov. 3

Nice shower this eve. Hope we get several more then the grass will get green. Wrote the boys but wont send it yet as I’ve asked the D.C. if he could tell us whether Cl could get petrol if he came down. Wire from Ken saying they can’t come this week end. Am teaching children “Holy Night” & Sitoya translates.

Sat. Nov. 4

Baked and cleaned as usual. The men went down river. Ab’t 1 some of the men came & said Waweru had been attacked by cattle thieves & was badly beaten up & wanted Earl to take him to Narok. Ngomaiyu went & called Earl & by 4:30 all were here & went to Narok. He didn’t seem to know who the thieves were. Robinson came to practice.

Sun. Nov. 5

Good crowd out to communion & meeting. Guess Nyakeiru is too busy with visitors to come out for prayer. I had a nice helpful time. Nice mail. 2 letters from Rays. and one from Agnes. She says they can’t come for Xmas. All were well. Bessie of Mbaei is here. she wants to marry George.

Mon. Nov. 6

Washed. Earl worked at car. Went fishing this eve but not very successful tho we had some for supper & a few are left for breakfast. Put traps down but got very little. Am trying to get all bills paid. Earls will take a cheque covering all these. How we thank God we can do it.

Tues. Nov. 7

Men went down river. I was at womens m’t’g when just before we closed Naiolong came in. & afterward said Shaffers were here. They are upstairs. Earls expect to go to Kijabe tomorrow. Ss say Kuyoni says the people don’t want him to leave there.

Wed. Nov. 8

This has been a day of “spasms”. Earls finally waited for lunch which we had at 11. Then they got off just as it started to rain & I had run in to see ab’t milk for them & they left without really saying goodby. Then Shaffers got last things packed & when it let up a bit they left ab’t 1:30. Last eve they had said they’d stay til tomorrow. but changed their minds. So we are alone again for how long???

Thur. Nov. 9

Letter from Cl. this eve says he wants to come down for Xmas. If he can’t get petrol he’ll come by bus. Hurrah. Am writing Rays to come if possible. D.C. says he can give 20 gals. & perhaps more - for return trip. I took last half of school. so Sitoya went. Kuyoni returned with him. met S’s near Suswa.

Fri. Nov. 10

And now again just when will Cl. get here. We’re very glad he’s coming any way. Getting letters off today. and had singing in school. Teaching them “Silent Night”. Sitoya translated it. Cleaned up other house. & brot many things over here. Are trying to get things lined up for packing. but can’t much be done before Jno goes to Council mtg. Dec. 10. Mrs Shaffer is getting & posting Helens wool in town - so wrote Helen.

Sat. Nov. 11

Armistice Day but it’s not to be observed as there is no peace in these countries this year. Kuyoni took letters to the post. Did a little baking but not much tho was busy all A.M. Cleaned up the organ - as may get word any day to send it in to Kijabe. Been thinking a lot ab’t Cl. coming down. Wonder if he’ll be here in 2 wks. Finished yellow n. gown.

Sun. Nov. 12

Nice soaking rain all P.M. Kamoni brot a lovely big mail. 2 letters from Lo. but all written so long ago. the latest Sept. 26. Esther wrote Mr Lyon is at Kijabe. hand in cast still and his memory of past all gone. Seems to know folks. So sad. they do need to get home. Who’ll take their place. Emily writes Barnetts sail 17th & some others with em. via So. Am. & So Af. Clarke wants to come for Xmas. Wish so much Rays would too.

Mon. Nov. 13

Washed. Rained hard again this P.M. just supper time. Guess we’ll plant a bit of corn. it acts like it might keep it up some. Made a dress out of bits of Americani & the old pink silk waist. for Ida’s prize both for good attendance & for teaching. Wrote Mrs McKenrick.

Tues. Nov. 14

It did succeed [arrow drawn to previous year, “Tried to rain but didn’t succeed.”] today. Started ab’t 1 P.M. and kept It up til 4. part of the time very hard. so the pond was almost to the pier. 2 women said they came to mtg but no one else did. I had a bad head when I awoke & it got worse. One of the kind that I couldn’t lie down it ached too much. Didn’t go to school nor do any thing but sit in chair. Better this eve.

Wed. Nov. 15

Had women’s mtg today. As tho Geo’s affair isn’t bad enuf - I found out today Parmale has given Jean his oldest girl to his heathen sister way out among the Masai. O dear I pray the Lord will deal with him & make him bring her back. Reading “If”. It is searching - read part in mtg tonight. Maybe because of our lovelessness toward others that we have so little power in prayer for others.

Thur. Nov. 16

Quite a big mail. The Mt. enlargements came. They are lovely - both. I had just sent the order for the one with Jno on when Cl’s film came. so ordered it too. Scudders have a boy - born Nov. 11. all doing well. No rain here today. Sewing class. Letter from Rays says their Conf. is Jan. 14 to 20. They again talk of going to So. Af. & then home. Troubled with rheumatism in right hip.

Fri. Nov. 17

Prayer Day. A year ago now Cl. was with us. and our wonderments stopt. Now we are wondering again just when he’ll get here. Spose Barnetts are on the sea by now. 9 coming. We went over prayer letter. I sewed up all blocks for one side of wool comforter. Don’t know that I’ll get it made now tho. Joshua of Sitoya born today at Narok.

Sat. Nov. 18

Baked bread only & cheese dish. Morima cleaned. Kamoni took post. I knitted some. mended my dress and numbered & wrote description of all the pictures I’m sending Bertha Simpson. Dr. & others came fishing. The pool is very roily so don’t think they got much. Rained a bit & got very cold ab’t 4. Robinson came for music. Geo. came but not here so guess he feels he better give up S.S. work now. It’s too bad for he did so well. but sin is sin.

Sun. Nov. 19

My how we are thinking ab’t a yr. ago. [Claudon visiting] and wondering when Cl. will get here. No post. it must have come too late. Had mtg at Kraal - 30 or more present. The 6 old women & how they listened! ‘Twas grand sun shine. Drs. were here fishing all day. Read Spurgeon tonight. Dad said it took an hr.

Mon. Nov. 20

Lovely this A.M. & wash got all dry. but just after dinner it began to rain & rained most all P.M. I decided to card some more wool & make up the quilt I have ready. Sitoya had a sore foot & didn’t come out to mtgs yesterday but managed school tho the foot was swelled & pus in it. Nothing much in mail. Nairobi paper. & nothing much in it.

Tues. Nov. 21

Had womens meeting but it rained very hard while we were at it. Saw either Njoki or mother of Pilasila at the man’s house on the hillside. Wrote Parmale’s letter ab’t getting Jean back. I hope he’ll do it. The Lord can persuade him. Ican’t. My cold is rather nasty. Took school for Sitoya went to Narok. They have a boy born last Fri.

Wed. Nov. 22

Went to school but my cold is very annoying. Had hot bath & lay down til supper time. Head bad & nose bad & throat not very sore. but am achey. Will go to bed early & if I don’t feel better tomorrow I’ll stay in. Tho Morima wnts to go with his wife to see Dr. as baby cries so much. Kamoni went with post & no rain today but a grand sunny day.

Thur. Nov. 23

And tonight we got Cl’s letter but instead of saying when he was coming it said he wasn’t coming at all for when he went to get the usual letter permit the officer said he must have a Brit. visa on passport & his p.p. is cancelled & not time enuf to get it. he was urging Bells to come & get us. as their p.p. is still good. Now we’ll wait & see what they write. Better this eve but had an awful night. cough spit blow!

Fri. Nov. 24

Am feeling better. We sent out for picnic lunch as the day was so pretty. Enjoyed it too. I took school after recess so Sitoya could go to get Tabisa from hospital. A medical man - Goan is camped across the bridge. Called for a bit. Nemolel not in school. was told she was circum. today. Devil still busy. Congo & other letters ready. Groceries came. Imported goods have gone up 50%.

Sat. Nov. 25

Cough is some better but seems to get worse at night. Remember last yr. so well. and the yr. before. [camping with Claudon, Raymond & Sara and traveling] Told Morima he’ll get 10% com. on all books he sells. And he’s certainly going at it hard. Robinson wants the camera. Showed him ab’t the machine, but he wont take it. we’ll take it to Kjb. later. 3 new kittens tonight. Washed hair. planted more garden.

Sun. Nov. 26

Lovely spring day. Quite a no. came to see ab’t books. I told Robinson more ab’t the camera and he took it with him. It’s loaded with a new roll so he will be able to snap some right away. Kamoni didn’t bring the mail. Talked with Parmale ab’t Jean. He says he hasn’t given her for good but just til time to go to school. I urged him to get her back soon.

Mon. Nov. 27

And tonight Nyakabe comes from Narok & says she forgot the post! We’re fed up with Kamonis work. He offers to get it & this is the way he does it. I sent word he should go early & come back early. Little did we think when at Vans last yr. that she’d be in glory by this yr. We had such a nice time there.

Tues. Nov. 28

Finally as I went to mtg. Kamoni came with the paper which was all there was. Dad rather thinks Earl may come this week end. but I don’t expect him til next. if then. Finished tying the wool comforter. And yesterday I cut out a sleeper from crepe mat. Ivy sent the pattern. My! how I remember a yr. ago. [arriving at Raymond’s station, Bafuka, in northern Congo] Wonder if they are thinking ab’t it too. Dad packed some books today. & burned a lot of junk.

Wed. Nov. 29

Wish I could give them another tray of things. Didn’t even remember a mo. ago & write them. Just before closing the letter last wk I realized ‘twould get there for Xmas. & put in a pretty card for John. Made Zipora’s prize dress. and sewed up the sleeper for Betty.

Thur. Nov. 30

Nothing very exciting in the post. Letter from Lo. and one from Esther saying if Earl can’t come out he will get some one else to come & get us. She was all right still but wishing much she wasn’t. Was pretty busy all day as Morima went to Narok. Brot flour. He’s selling the books alright - but hasn’t enuf to satisfy every one.

Somewhat different this yr. We have never had such a testing time. Don’t know what we are to do in future. Shall we pack for Congo & then how’s it all to get there? When & how are we going? And such annoying thots & wrangling going on in my heart. I try so hard to have peace. It comes & then goes. And not enuf money to plan any move.

Fri. Dec. 1

What will we know by Jan. 1? Perhaps we’ll be on our way to Congo. Sewed some at dresses for prizes. old ones cut over. Fished this P.M. & knitted. Got enuf for break. Spent quite a long time in quiet. Gets cloudy a bit but doesn’t rain. fear we’ll lose our seed again.

Sat. Dec. 2

Well, a yr. ago wasn’t such a pleasant day [ill & in extreme pain] but I’d gladly go thro it again if we could all be together. We’d like so much to be getting things packed but we just don’t know what to do ab’t things til we know how we are going. Morima is faithfully selling books and has taken in quite a lot already.

Sun. Dec. 3

A good crowd out for communion. Lots of the Narok boys. Robinson pd. for the sewing machine. now if I decide to take it to Congo I’ll send him back the money. Samuel wanted the gun but Kuyoni wants it if he can get permission. Letter from Ray wanting our plans!!! We’d like to know something definite too. Guess we must need to learn to trust a day at a time. Had a long talk this eve.

Mon. Dec. 4

Kuyoni went to get permission to get the gun but didn’t see him this eve so perhaps he didn’t get it. Had quite a talk with him. Trying to explain things. Has it done any good? God knows. I really feel his heart is not hard toward us. Busy fixing up dresses for ab’t 8 girls who’ve had perfect attendance.

Tues. Dec. 5

Eunice spoke very well at the womens mtg. Quite a good number out. Ruth W. is sick. down with a bad leg. Every thing seems to poison her so. Course her body isn’t well. ever. feet are always swelled. fixed up a dress of bits of blue serge. I have to make 8 or 10 dresses so it keeps me scheming. Still no rain. Things are getting dry.

Wed. Dec. 6

Children made paper chains for Xmas. this P.M. Will need to work another before they’ll have enough. Martha & Anna helped so I came home & sewed. Have 5 dresses done & 4 more to do. Got pr of shorts for Kefa from Lobo 1.25. Will look for shirt in town as he has had perfect attendance all yr in school & S.S.

Thur. Dec. 7

Cl’s letter came & says Bells can’t come so we just don’t know what’s best to do. If we only had the money we had last yr. I mean the am’t - we’d be alright. I’m sure it will come. Cl. says if we could only get to the border he’d manage the rest. Kenneth is coming out for us Sat. night. Losiers are not going to Lasit for Xmas. Shaffers may be up. don’t know yet. Want Morima to work for them when we leave.

Fri. Dec. 8

Rather a disappointing day. I finished the boys’ letters & Dad & I had quite a long talk ab’t getting to Congo & he seems to feel the Lord is shutting the way. It is true we have no money yet. & He knows we can’t wait til the last minute to plan & pack but we’ll keep on trusting we may be shown where His place for us is. Sewed at dresses.

Sat. Dec. 9

Ab’t 6:15 Earl, Messrs Griffith & Brand drove in, so I scurried around & got beds ready in other house. Brand up stairs. Morima had just gone so they took walk & called him. He helpt with supper… Had music til late. Sewed 2 dresses today & fixed suspenders for Kefa. Have nice suit khaki pants & plaid shirt. 2 more dresses to make.

Sun. Dec. 10

Mtgs as usual. Forgot to say Baby boy Anderson came Fri. A.M. early. All are doing very well. Haven’t settled on a name. They brot post. 2 air mails from Lo & Co. Ed. had a car accident & was hurt but recovering nicely. Asked Geo. to look after S.S. next Sun. Having a bit of Rigoletto - since our mtg.

Mon. Dec. 11 Kijabe. Mr. Downings

Got away ab’t 10:30. Drove to Narok to see the church. Then had to stop twice to fix the wheel. Ate lunch ab’t 1 at river. Came on fine til on way down Mau we stopt 20 min. so Jno, Earl & Griffith could climb the little pointed hill. Then on getting here before sun down. After supper went to see Esther & babe and spent sometime with Mrs Davis. Council still meeting 11 P.M. Poor Dad.

Tues. Dec. 12

Mr. D. said at supper that things were being taken care of very well & that they’d be thro early tomorrow. We walked up to see cement R.R. bridges & the stone quarry & crusher. I went to R.V.A. twice with letters. Saw Esther again. Kens want us to stay over til Tues. and they’ll take us out. Mr D too. Perhaps we shall. Dad may go in on Thurs. & stay til we come Mon.

Wed. Dec. 13

Today another letter from Cl. with another cheque enclosed and also a note from Mr V saying he was sure folks would welcome us to Congo. So Dad took both “news” to Council & said he felt the Lord was opening that door & we’d go if they’d give us permission & Mr Nixon put the question & all agreed. So I’m going to town too tomorrow because of passport picture but I’ll return with Ken who is taking a load of us in. Nice program at R.V.A. Nice talk with Mrs Davis this P.M.

Thur Dec. 14

Got away in good time. Went to Belgian Consul & then had picture taken and then got ammunition & all went to Norfolk for lunch. Did some shopping but will still have plenty to do on Mon. Jno went to Am. Consul & got every thing done but signing & picture. And by time table we get to Mahagi Jan. 11. Ruth T. is at Miss S’s with her teeth all out. Jno goes to dentist tomorrow, then he’ll eat soup only too. Glad to go to bed early.

Bernice starts nurses training in Lady Northy home in Feb. Keith works here with Mr Devitt. Neither Martha nor Keith think they passed their Cam. Exam. Some folks got home letters but we got nothing.

Sat. Dec. 16

Hope Cl. is with Rays & that they are having a nice time. I’ve taken cold. cough some & headache some. Knitted some at pink skirt. With Kens to Payet’s at cross roads for tea. Then had soup & tea supper at Kens. Mr. Griffith started for Nairobi but had his suit case stolen so is hunting it. Set it down a minute to see ab’t bus & some one picked it up.

Sun. Dec. 17

Went to both services A.M. & P.M. but was feeling pretty sick this morning & it’s cold & windy. Was at Devitts for supper. Betty Sywulka is still there. He took me home & then I went to Davises a bit - at Dr’s request. Want to get off early for Nairobi. Mr. Downing is going too.

Mon. Dec. 18

Something wrong with car & didn’t get it fixed til 8 P.M. so got home by 10! Mr D. & Jno sat outside Rosenblums til car was fixed. Got most things every one ordered. & a good deal for ourselves too.

Tues. Dec. 19

Ken still at car but ab’t fixed now. Hope to get off by 9 or so. as it gets very windy across Kidong. At Lehrers for lovely dinner and down to Leslie Tarletans for supper & gramaphone. both were very fine. Wonderful music - and such a nice instrument. Home by 11. My cold seemed better but is nasty tonight again. No pop corn yet from Capens.

Wed. Dec. 20

Got away from dukas by 11. Lunched under two trees. Mr D. didn’t come as he had weddings to do but will come on Sun lorry. Got here ab’t 3:30. Morima had all done. Found mail here as the Kijabe P.M. didn’t know we were there still. A letter from Ray with cheque for $100. - Bless him! They expect us to get there for Conf.

Thurs. Dec. 21

My cold is awful. I feel quite miserable - and now we can’t find gun receipt so may have to pay out our precious shs. for new license. Can’t imagine where they could have been put. always have em with all receipts - but it’s not there now. Shall have a good look around tomorrow & may God help us to find it. The men went for guineas but got none. Ken’s boy came also the popcorn.

Fri. Dec. 22

Looked, but didn’t find receipts so K. & I drove to Narok - after the storm of little rain & big wind. The clerk said they always have the carbon copy of receipts there & all we need is the no. so we got it for gun & poll tax & almost settled for gun too but DC wasn’t there so will settle next week. Cold much better.

Sat. Dec. 23

Baked some. and cleaned. Dad has most of the books packed. Have written Mr Brand we’ll be glad to pay him if he wants to come out & take us & loads in. Started knitting pink beret for Betty. Sat out & enjoyed moonlight for quite a while. Guess this house will look dif. by another week.

Sun. Dec. 24

Ken went for his father. Morning mtg as usual. They decorated & we had eve program. Mr Clarke came just in time for supper. He was tired & had a drink or two so wasn’t so pleasant. Jno staid here also Mr. D. Ken & Ivy went with me. Also Daphne. Program ws nice - and all seemed happy & enjoyed the popcorn. Mr C brot a turkey.

Mon. Dec. 25

Rained hard this eve. We had early mtg. Mr D spoke. J. went I got break. Gave Morima recipe book in Swahili & Daily Light. We had turkey etc at noon. Mr C was here also for supper & music. Getting things together a bit for camp as Ks want to go tomorrow. Don’t know what I’ve eaten but am feeling pretty punk. what little food I eat lies without digesting. Queer sort of Xmas for me.

Tues. Dec. 26

Baked bread. All went for a picnic but me. I went to women’s mtg. & when we came out I saw Brands car here. And Clarke & Jno & Mr D had already returned as it rained hard there. Just sprinkled here. Mr. B. expects Devitts tomorrow. Packed the bureau & got trunks around.

Wed. Dec. 27

Organ all packed. Mr C. had a box. Was just going to get at the chest drawers when Dad announced Devitts were here. Their car broke down. spring broke. at bridge & they came on in Brand’s & got the lorry to go down & bring up things & then drove the car carefully. They’re sleeping in other house. all had supper here. Mr. C. too. Guess K’s enjoyed camp today twas very sunny & pleasant.

[from back of book] Dec. 31, 1939 We’ve reached the last night - and all I can say is - Thank God for His care & help all the way thro. for Oct. was the hardest mo. we’ve ever had. ‘37 was troubles with native girls but this yr’s troubles were much harder. God knows what the future holds. We want only His will. We’ve learned some lessons and pray we may not fail Him again but stay very near to Him every day.
