Deut. 11:11,12: “The land whither ye go to possess it is a land of hills & valleys etc - a land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord are always upon it from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.” - Praise God!Wed. Jan. 1John and Carl left early for a scramble up the 2nd valley to the hi falls & the cave - a very dark dreary day and they were back here by 1:30. Had turbine going all day. so hope Miss N’s battery is alright. Paid up wages. Thank God there was enuf to do so. Will Rays be on the water a wk from tonight? Now 1941 has begun. how will it end?Thur. Jan. 2Finally Littlejohns are here. Dr. came as usual. Carl went back with him. He looked at the turbine and found the padding around the post worn quite badly - so he gave us his car battery for the radio and he took ours & it will charge as he uses his car. Said Bob Deans had a letter from Cl. & he said he isn’t coming back til after Conf. We’ll have a letter soon, too.Fri. Jan. 3Bot some pork last eve - and canned 3 qts. And made 3 tins of sausages today & 1 tin of nice lard. Took down Xmas things. [arrow drawn to same activity this day 1938] Walked down to the river & across & up to falls. Mr L. rested several times, so didn’t get too tired. Read a negro story tonight & partly wrote Cl’s letter. Several more must be written before Mon.Sat. Jan. 4My how well I remember a yr ago! [leaving Siyabei] Just at 12 de Wildes came. but wouldn’t stop for dinner, as they expected guests. Then a bit after 2 Longmans came. They are settled in Beckers house. Agnes sent a front leg & ribs of pork and it’s lovely. They brot letters from Oicha but no other mail. Guess we’ll just have to be patient til the runner goes. Miss F. ate supper here.Sun. Jan. 5Very nice communion service. Lovely dinner because of Anges’ pork roast. Good rest this P.M. Some rain but not much. Couldn’t go for a walk tho. The little girls entertained us all by their antics on the veranda. They are lively but obedient. Nice service. Keswick address. Radio was very poor as it’s lightening.Mon. Jan. 6Stormed early night but nice this A.M. & all but me went for picnic up to the cave. Came back very late to dinner. Hard rain ab’t 3 PM and now it’s raining very hard again. Man went to Beni. I wrote Aunt Ellen.Tues. Jan. 7What a night. Lightening, thunder, wind & rain all night. and ab’t 1 Dad lit the lantern & said the river was roaring awful & I heard it too. Miss N. was up too fearing her house might go. What a sight this morn. The whole valley is washed out. far hill side washed away & a wide rocky bottom. Turbine all gone but the water shaft and the board shoot leading to it is piled with rocks. 10 men worked this A.M. & dug out doors and the round saw and dynamo & few things but the lathe & tool box & wheel of turbine are all still missing. Men walked up valley & said there is no falls - the valley is full of rocks. And today Rays sail.Wed. Jan. 8More digging but nothing much was found. A man brot one end of my writing desk that Cl. was making me, but hadn’t finished. Men walked way down this P.M. & its the same story, up rooted trees and land washed away leaving piles & piles of stones. Mrs. De Wilde replied to my letter that he was gone up their valley to see the destruction. Seems it was as bad there. Mrs Littlejohns is making up the green polka dot. She looks nice in it.Thur. Jan. 9Mail man came tonight - 4 days - Beni & Oicha. That’s very good. Letters from Sara Ray & Cl. also Ruth Truesdell was at Mombasa with them. They were having a nice time. They are on a Dutch boat to Singapore where they change to another Dutch boat to Hong kong where they are booked by Jap boat to U.S. Paul B. is on Conf. Com. so Cl. wits til after to come. Paluku put water pail down to cool water & it was washed away. He has been so remiss lately - ought to fire him.Fri. Jan. 10The 2nd Oicha man got in this eve. Brot Miss N’s parcel & note from Dr. to say he thot they’d better not come til Thur. & hoped the men would find all they could. Dad & Mr. Longman went up river - by noon came to huge land slide which had dammed river & caused a reservoir which burst & brot such a flood down the valley.Sat. Jan. 11Didn’t send the telegram to Cl. after all for it would have cost Frcs. 50 besides the runner. Baked and cleaned. this P.M. went up to the falls only there’s very little left. the top is there but the valley is full of stones. All came over for phono music and news and popcorn & candy made from left over icing.Sun. Jan. 12This is Rays first Sun. on ship board. wonder so how he is standing the trip. Quiet Sun. here- as much so as possible with a family to care for. I made jello but it didn’t jell even when put into the Lusilubi. so we had cake & tea and Miss Noweck gave us nuts from her Xmas package from home.Mon. Jan. 13Hard rain & wind just at supper time. A few men worked in the gravel but found only a ball bearing thing. Dad says its needless to look further but I’d like ‘em to keep on. however I’m paying them off tomorrow. The Mr. Ls have cleaned up the dynamo somewhat. & will leave it til Dr comes. Mixed bread stiff & biscuits as we have to have some for breakfast. Phono. so I knitted.Tues. Jan. 14Baked buns for breakfast. Took lunch to the river thro the garden. Men weren’t digging today. Dad trimming lemon trees. Baked bread & will again tomorrow. Wrote Devitts. finished off several others. Play Chinese checkers this eve. Mr. L. beat 3 games.Wed. Jan. 15The 3 men went down river today with lunch. They say it’s just the same all way- a washed out valley strewn with rocks. They saw some boards but nothing of much value. I baked ginger bread & cookies & bread but it’s not nice. are talking ab’t driving to the stream to meet Dr. We are told the other bridge is not yet finished.Thur. Jan. 16Agnes, Miss Lohrman & Carl came with Dr. Dad took the 3 down to see the valley. We had strawberries & cake for dessert but not enuf for supper. Mrs. Littlejohns had a very bad head ache. Dr. thinks the turbine should be fixed up again right away. Wrote Bertha Goodman.Fri. Jan. 17Prayer day so we met right after break. and later I got the wool out to show Mrs. Longman what I had and now she wants to buy several lots. 29 oz. in all. I don’t care to keep it lying around too long & I have no immediate use for it. so guess I’ll let her have it. Mended all P.M. ‘twas late til we finished lunch. Miss Frost sent dessert. Very good.Sat. Jan. 18Raining hard when we got up. Boys came very late and weren’t able to do any real cleaning. Ab’t 3 a note came sayng Vollors were at the stream & Miss Moore. would we get them. Mr. Longman & Dad went. The V’s are in Cl’s room & Miss M. in guest house sitting room. We had finished tea it was most 5 when de Wildes came walking. They had tea & weighed baby & men took them back to stream where they had left their car.Sun. Jan. 19Mtgs as usual. All rested this P.M. then Dad took Vollors for a walk up the valley. Wanted to all go for walk after supper but it rained hard while we were eating. Paluku came after we were eating. Had our service - then radio news then very nice music from U.S.A. Longmans talking abt going camping at Rest house but want to wait til Cl. comes & goes too.Mon. Jan. 20Vollors got away right after breakfast. Messers. L & L took them to the stream. Natives were after Mr. Longman ab’t elephant saying they are very nearby. He’d like to take Cl’s gun and go for them but hesitates for fear something might happen. Dad & Mr. Littlejohns went to paradise to see if we can picnic there tomorrow. Guess we’ll go. Miss N. killed a small sheep & gave us half.Tues. Jan. 21Went to paradise picnic place. ‘Twas pretty wet but we had a nice time. Baked 4 loaves of bread 2 pans of biscuit and a huge coffee cake. Miss N. gave us half of a sheep and we had stew & dumplings for supper. Wonder where Cl. is tonight. The far bridge that washed out & was repaired has been taken out again as it wasn’t done right. Hope they get it in before Cl. comes.Wed. Jan. 22Dad was up at 3 this morn because there was a terrible roar in the valley again. Later found there had been a repetition of 2 wks ago. He found his wheel barrow washed down a ways. there wasn’t a lot of rain but the 1st bridge is out again. A lovely mail came at noon. Lots of nice letters. Rays didn’t sail til Sun. the 12th. Nothing from Cl. so we think he’ll soon be here but hope he doesn’t come at night.Thur. Jan. 23Hasn’t come yet. We took lunch to the falls and saw the change the second flood had made. caves are washed out & easy to get to that we could only see before. Mary played too rough with the parrot & broke its leg at the hip joint - so we may kill it in the morning. Can’t be bound up very well.Fri. Jan. 24And not yet! how we’ve looked today. Dad thinks Mr & Mrs B are surely coming too. Dad & Mr Longman went north to the next valley & they say it’s washed out just like here but there are lovely water falls. Spose we’ll have to go over & see ‘em some day. Parrot seems to be able to get around even tho not using its foot.Sat. Jan. 25One never knows what a day may bring forth. After break. Dad & Mr. Lit. went to find a short path to the next valley to the north. & were coming back for dinner. After 1 they came. Had followed elephant paths & finding a branch off Mr L. went to see if it was good & fell into a pit. Ab’t same time Dad fell into a deep one full of water & beside being ab’t drowned & choked with muck he put his shoulder out of joint. & then they got lost in the matete [elephant grass]. De Wildes came but at stream turned back & took Dad & Mr. Long. to Oicha.Sun. Jan. 26I staid with children & Mrs. L. played during first service. We had just finished dinner when a man came saying the car was at the stream. ‘Twas 3 before they were finished with lunch. De Wildes left ab’t 4. Dr. put Dad’s arm in place without anesthetic. He’s pretty badly bandaged. but has one hand free. pen is dry. [writing fading]Mon. Jan. 27It’s been pretty hard for Dad today. The bandage seems to get so tight around him and it slips up & isn’t comfy. Note 2 yrs ago. [camping with pygmies, John sick, heavy rain] Seems to be Dad’s unlucky day. Didn’t do much of any thing. Wrote Mrs Harlow and Eliz. Johnson tonight. My, I’d like to see where Cl. is. Rained pretty hard over dinner.Tues. Jan. 28The men walked down to the stream this A.M. Timbers are being cut but nothing is doing at the bridge. Longmans are getting rather restless. Had strawberry shortcake for supper. Mended and knitted. Mrs. Longman is getting her green sweater toward the finish. but she may rip out one side as it’s too large.Wed. Jan. 29Mr. Longman hired 6 men and he staid & worked with them til 5 P.M. and says he has a detour made where the river can be forded. Mr. de San, the prospector, called ab’t 3 and we had tea. He finds nothing around here that shows any gold at all. Finished knitting the round cushion of heavy 8 ply wool. Mrs. Lo. getting on with green sweater.Thur. Jan. 30Dr. came & our car met him tho he might have driven up for when he went Longmans car went down and drove thro the detour alright. Alice W. came with Dr. Letter from Mrs. Davis but no news from Cl. Longmans and Littlejohns are going to the Lake for a camp til Sun.Fri. Jan. 31They got off by 9 for the Lake. Pretty heavily loaded but they said they’d make room for Dad if he’d go. But we’re alone. Dad, with my help, took the book case off the boxes & pushed the table up & put it on it & uses the other end to type on. I was up at 2:30 & put the biscuits into the pans. & so they were baked by breakfast time. I also started the fire.Is it possible one mo. is already past. We heard the resomane [?] of Hitlers speech yesterday and what they threaten to do “in the spring” sickens one. Just what will this yr. bring forth? Just now our greatest concern is where is Claudon, & why doesn’t he wire if he can’t come. Never dreamed the mo. would close & he not be here.Sat. Feb. 1A bit after 7 this eve we saw a bright light on the far hill. and hoped it was Cl. but it was the campers returning. De Wildes were here & had said it was very hot at he Lake so we rather thot they’d be back. I baked & stewed so things are ready for tomorrow. They had had supper but were glad for baths. I don’t feel right about it - it’s too much. but they insist. The Lord is good.Tues. Feb. 4Longmans finally got away by 10:30. They took lunch with them and hope they are at Oicha tonight. Hope they picked up the post man & helped him along so he’ll get back here quickly. They were here exactly a mo. but it didn’t seem so long. We are very glad L’s are still here or we’d be pretty lonely. Maybe Cl & Paul are coming via Chilsons.Wed. Feb.5Wonder if Rays are on their next boat yet. hope so. Thank God and Littlejohns. Dad types these days.Thur. Feb. 6Post man returned but brot no letter or any word about Cl. But a letter from Mr Clarke says he’d like to come but petrol permits wont issue sufficient to make such a trip. Perhaps that’s the trouble, but then why hasn’t he come by boat. A lovely letter from Mrs. Bond telling of their children & ours getting off. They waved as the boat steamed out.Fri. Feb. 7Baked some. Wrote Mrs Bond and got letters looked over. Just got sts for rug cast on & one row knitted. But finished carding wool for the round knitted pillow & it’s all done & looks nice. Now I’ll knit the rug & use it as cover for couch. What have I to show for it?[from back of book] Yes, the war has lasted another yr. and the Lord has tarried. What patience He has. Now U.S.A. is in it too & we can well ask what does ‘42 hold for us as a nation and as individuals.Perhaps the hardest thing to understand, of all the hard things of the yr. is the sinking of the Zamzam and all our workers being sent back to U.S. but Guildings & Mr. Mundy in concentration camps. Our hearts go out to them at this time and pray constantly the Lord will give grace and peace thro it all.Rays have no idea when they’ll get back. We have enjoyed the Kenya folks and all the guests of the year. Cl enjoyed the June guests & has taken a fancy to Miss Taylor. We pray God’s will may be done by them. We commit the past to God and pray for guidance for the future. We praise Him especially for recovery from accidents & sickness.Index |
