Mon. Feb. 1

Mary Anne arrived Dec. 15. Johnsons expected to leave 6 P.M. but Miss N. had a maternity case that had to go over so Cl. went & they went along. & will come back with Dr. The children ate breakfast by themselves but Gl. was here dinner & supper. Cl. got back ab’t 7:30. Not much mail but air from Ray.

Wed. Feb. 3

Got a big scare when fire got away from Miss F’s garden boy & went south most to the village & also thro the banana grove & on other side - almost to girls’ house. Stopt it by cutting a strip of grass & then threw water from the stream. Got pig cut up & fried. Miss N. sent half.

Thur. Feb. 4

HOT. Every one went to get meat - Cl. shot an elephant yesterday P.M. Boys did washing. Gl. baked & iced cup cakes & cookies. I baked bread. boys got back for work at supper. Have had a bad head but it’s so hot. no wonder. Wrote Stacy & sent him Aunt A’s letter. the last she wrote.

Fri. Feb. 5

We looked in vain for Dr. Then ab’t 4:30 we began our supper. and by 5:15 or so Bells, Johnsons & Mother H. came. We are so glad. Agnes & Mother here & Jim in corner room at Cl’s. The supper was very nice. Ham sandwiches & cheese and wedding cake & cup cakes & cookies. & candy. So hot & dusty for travellers but we are glad they came.

Sat. Feb. 6

Visited and got things ready for Oicha. Had hi tea at 3:30 & then a picture at Cl’s. and then they left. Had hoped they’d stay for wk end but Jim had to get back. Mrs Spees is at Oicha quite ill and Dr. couldn’t get his car started so took it he wasn’t to come. The man I sent Tues. with letter to Agnes, returned today & brot all back as he got sick on the path & returned.

Sun. Feb. 7

Hot quiet day. Cl. has been busy all P.M. with the teachers. Guess they’re pretty well packed up. Taking the tepoi just for safety as it’s a long walk tomorrow. Quite a number of the teachers are here. Plans are getting underway for the Sept. Conf.

Mon. Feb. 8

They left on Dad’s new path right after break. Took most all able bodied men. Yuda wanted to burn rubbish in his garden below the water ditch & fire started & has gone up the ridge & across & is coming down thro the bracken. Men are throwing water on roofs - and Norman has run the cars out of the garage for safety. 10:30 & the worst seems past. Natives have all gone home. Ans. Harriets letter telling of her engagement to Charlie Richmond. Wonder if Gl. is tired tonight.

Tues. Feb. 9

Hotter than ever. My what black hills we have & I’m sure they made it so hot here today. Boys helpt me put things back into print shop. I’ve been very tired and Yuda had to go to Mutsora with a ‘Green cap’ just to sign up. De Wildes are away so nothing will be done now. Dad started making path from Cl’s to the garden.

Wed. Feb. 10

Miss N. gave 5 men to cut matete tween store & print shop & beyond. Want to dig it all up & plant potatoes when rains come. Some spots still smoking. Mrs. J & I both washed our hair. Sewed at old khakis. Wonder when I’ll get ‘em done. Miss N. led pr. mtg. Not many peaches this yr.

Thur. Feb. 11

Man came with mail & butter. Letter from Office (Home) with remit. So very thankful. I’m ordering a mat from the Danish Mission. also one for Cls. Some of the money is Xmas present from Steeles & Nora Steiner. No shower today. [arrow drawn to previous yr. “Had a nice shower & cold wind.”] Am watering the flowers.

Fri. Feb. 12

Quite a nice shower during breakfast. Don’t I remember a year ago. [Dr. Becker, Claudon & Udds came from Oicha] Dr. came again today & being the “off” wk. very few came to see him & he was done early & in my haste to get the mail down, I forgot to put Mrs. B’s letter & Agneses in - so they are here. 3 men came from Cl. with rice. another is to come with peanuts tomorrow. An animal ate one of our hens last eve. She was on a nest. in the brush pile.

Sat. Feb. 13

Man came in bringing peanuts & rooster. Work as per usual on Sat. Tried starting bread this morn. as it seemed to work so fast last time - but today took all day but is pretty nice now.

Sun. Feb. 14

Services as usual. Sun is so hot. but breeze is cool. Wrote Gl. & Eliz Johnson. Will send a man to Cl. in the morning. Ladies staid late & chatted. It’s all so interesting to hear how work has progressed in Ukamba.

Mon. Feb. 15

Miss N. is concerned ab’t her buildings & the water ditch for Dad’s path to the garden is going to be hard to make without pulling down the bank. Got a man off to the children. It’s been cold & clouds blowing in & showers especially this A.M. no one wanted to work.

Tues. Feb. 16

Mail man came but brot no butter. Said the man at Beni wanted a letter. There was one I wrote but seems another was expected. Gl. got most of the mail. No sign of rain today. Dad worked on the far path today. He may abandon the garden path.

Wed. Feb. 17

Sewed at made over trousers & best parts shirts. I enjoy getting things out of the way but don’t know if it’s best way to use my time. Want to make thin dress but will wait til Gl. gets back. Korkov in Russia has been taken back by Russian army.

Thur. Feb. 18

Radio reports: American Army in N. Af. has lost 44,000 and 3500 killed & 6000 wounded! Seems terrible. terrible. May God comfort those who mourn with His own peace. I suggested going to next stream for picnic but Dad says Sat.

Fri. Feb. 19

O joy it started to rain ab’t 4 A.M. and rained til most 9. just steady. Plenty of lightening but no wind nor thunder. Got man off to Oicha. Made both kinds of do nuts & potato chips. Wrote Udds.

Sat. Feb. 20

Went over to other valley on Dad’s path. I baked pies first. Bread was very slow. not very light when baked at supper time. We just got started back when it began to rain hard so we wore coats. Got wet but had nice hot baths so no harm done. Salumu came back with letter from Cl. saying they’ll be in on Mon.

Sun. Feb. 21

Quiet day. rested & read. And now Mrs. Chilson & Rachel are home. flew. in 12 days. Udds are in T.T. She is much better, evidently. ‘Twill be so nice having the children back.

Mon. Feb. 22

But they aren’t back yet. Word came by some one that they’d be in tomorrow. Got their house all dusted & boquets in & water etc. Every one is busy planting in their gardens. Mrs. J. isn’t getting on so well. Wants to see Dr. but N. keeps nagging to go home. I hope he’ll wait to see if Dr. can’t help her. 3 large tusks have come. Cl. took out license.

Tues. Feb. 23

Still not in. If they don’t come tomorrow I’ll see ab’t some one going out. Am getting pants sewn up - all shapes & descriptions - & little dresses & rompers - all of best parts of old pants & shirts. Getting a few letters written.

Wed. Feb. 24

They came ab’t 3:45. At 2:30 their boy came saying some one had come & said they were near. Had tea when they got here & then baths & supper & pr. mtg. Gladys is pretty tired for they walked 7 ¾ hrs. and besides she has filaria in her ankle.

Thur. Feb. 25

Rainy this P.M. so they’re glad to be here. Man came from de Wildes with butter and cheese & asked when Dr. comes, so told them tomorrow & would they come to lunch. We are often living last yr over again. Wonder if they are too.

Fri. Feb. 26

Dr. came & Mr. Harter. He tells us our freight has gone to Juba!!! and the man in charge was threatening to sell it & pay charges. He sent all to Van & he is getting it out. When will we get it? de Wildes came to lunch. Baby is growing very well. Dr. brot 4 kilos of butter so we are very well supplied.

Sat. Feb. 27

Usual work & at 11 we all went to 2nd valley. Johnsons raved ab’t it just like every one does. Mr. Inglis has had the matete cut ab’t half way & the rest the path is plain but narrow. Popcorn & music. Miss F came over talked late.

Sun. Feb. 28

How fast the days pass. 2 mo. finished! All services as usual. Had a good rest this P.M. We stay up pretty late. Mrs. J. is sleeping a bit better tho. I’m so thankful that I waken at, or a bit after, 5 every morn. It is so helpful to have a bit of quiet before daylight. Ladies staid & visited til 10 tonight. They seem to enjoy visiting with Johnsons. I’m glad they do. I’m so sorry J’s feel they must go - not Mrs. but Norman is terribly fidgetty. I fear we didn’t have enuf picnics to keep him content.

Mon. Mar. 1

Mrs. J washed her hair. boys washed & ironed all the J’s things. J’s seem pretty well packed tho they aren’t hustling away. They have a nice lot of ivory & may get more. I’ll send a bit to Jessie. Dad seems to be having a flare of fever. Two large fires burned large areas on the next hill.

Tues. Mar. 2

They got away by 9. Guess Norman is glad. but she was so sleepy this morn. Dr gave her something to help her to sleep. They are getting things for us in Nairobi. It seems pretty quiet. Mail came but not much. Pictures from Leop-ville - Fr. 393.+

Wed. Mar. 3

Dad staid in bed most A.M. Had an uncomfortable night. Miss N. said this eve that women said the cable of the pontoon [on Semliki] broke & no one could get across til late P.M. Poor Johnsons - & they had no lunch along. Gl. was here most all day cutting & fitting the thin dress. Lo sent material. Looks very nice.

Thur. Mar. 4

Had dinner at Cl’s. Worked at dress some more. Found such a lot of chickens with swelled heads. One died yesterday so I’m quarantining the worst ones & doctoring all. with kerosene & then permanganate. Guess I’ll have to kill several. Seems no cure. This boy is so irresponsible. May put Sibawenda on again.

Fri. Mar. 5

Gladys pretty well finished all stitching. Now I’ll do hand work. The boy left 2 of her dresses on the line last night to get dry & the pretty red one was taken. Mistake. We’re so sorry as we’ve never had any thieving done here. We’ll offer a reward & see if it wont be found. Doctoring at the chickens today. So many are sick.

Sat. Mar. 6

Cleaned & baked as usual. Thot I’d do hand work at my dress but instead I sorted scattered pages of Kingwana song books. & put them together some what. No full books - just odd pages. Still doping chickens. Some look better.

Sun. Mar. 7

Hot and hazy and many big fires. some quite near. Many teachers in for Communion. Had fried chicken but they were too fat to be prime. Finished reading “Pentecost Examined” by a Baptist lawyer. I can agree in almost every thing.

Mon. Mar. 8

Several more big fires right near de Wildes - it lookt like. It’s so hot and smokey that it’s depressing. Cl. has water wheel & battery going. Trouble was they had generator on backwards! Wonder where Johnsons are. Have neither heard nor seen any thing of Van Dusens. Cl & Gl here to supper & evening.

Tues. Mar. 9

Cl & Gl. talk of going to the South schools next week. Gl. almost finished my dress today. Still hot & so hazy we can’t see Mutwangas at all. Better from de Wildes & they want to come next Sat. to weigh Yves. He is gaining nicely. Chickens seem to be getting better. paint their heads every day with permanganate.

Wed. Mar. 10

Had a shower ab’t noon. Nothing very big but clears the atmosphere. Gl. led prayer mtg. Finished my thin dress & hung it away. Worked at some little suits. Will not make any more now.

Thur. Mar. 11

No rain today. Not many fires any more. Wrote Blaikies. Dad working at matete along ditch & changing path a bit that leads up river. Cl & Gl. have veranda stones all placed & think they’ll get flat slabs for floor and use a bit of cement to hold ‘em. Miss N. killed a sheep. Then green cap came & offered a pig. I killed it. quite small.

Fri. Mar. 12

Work with meat. Mr. Van D. brot Dr. & Miss Dakin. She’s not so bad as formerly but pretty loud. Ab’t 4:30 a car came in a Mr & Mrs Hunt & 2 boys from way down the Congo. Older boy needs eyes attended to so Mr. & He will try to get the bus at Katwe tomorrow. Cl. will take them. Dr gave Dad injection. A big mail. 8 parcels.

Sat. Mar. 13

Dad’s trouble is a form of neuritis – shingles - and it does bother him much by spells. He had a miserable night. I was up at 3:30 & got break. They got away a bit after 5 but Brit. Customs man is sick & natives wouldn’t let them pass. They’ll try again on Wed. Dad seems better this eve. Lots of huge fires. One in paradise valley. de Wildes came & we all had hi tea here. Cl’s can’t go to schools on Mon. Cl. shot 2 buffalo today.

Sun. Mar. 14

Miss Dakin is pretty queer. Declares she can’t sing unless she takes her teeth out & having forgotten her kerchief she wanted to put them into my Bible basket during church. I refused. Daudi sang too slow for her so she threatened him & then me. She doesn’t sit still but keeps running in & out. Shall try to keep her home next Sun. Finished reading Mc Neill sermons. All were very good.

Mon. Mar. 15

Decided to take Dad & Daudi & little boy to Oicha tomorrow. Dakin wanted to go too but we’ll have a load. Mr. Hunt will drive Cl’s car. He had a better night but it’s our last chance as both men leave on Wed. D’s little boy is quite sick. Dakin has been pretty troublesome. Walked to Mutwangas & back then sat on veranda drinking tea & asking for food - etc.

Tues. Mar. 16

O dear what a day. Dakin came to break - all ready to go to Beni & said she’d walk. She wouldn’t wait to see if we had room. “Shun” day at Mutwangas & she got a ride - (to back). Dr. gave Dad another injection. Were at Bells for dinner. Daudi had to stay. We had a heavy load coming back but ‘twas very comfy riding. Dad suffered a good deal. Got in hard rain.

[from back] Tues. Mar. 16, 1943. Miss Dakin “determined to have my own way” walked to Mutwangas & there got a truck for Beni. She found she had Frcs. 300 credit in the Bank. I offered to get what she wanted but she is having her own way. We met her on this side of Beni & wanted to bring her back but she was going to Beni. The Greek gave her tea & tried to dissuade her from coming on home but she started out.

This is her story - & it began to rain. Soon she heard a car (she had tried to hire some one to bring her back but could find no one) this was the official Mr. Braun & another man. They took her into the car & wanted to take her to Oicha - but when they wouldn’t stop & let her out she “messed up the car”. She kicked Mr. B. to make him take his foot off the gas and jerked the wheel from him & pulled & jerked every thing that would move. and tho he tried to remonstrate with her ‘twas no good she would get out tho it was pouring rain.

She was walking along the road near the Semliki when a flash of lightening showed her an elephant just a few steps in front of her. There were 4 & when they trumpeted she got a shock. but they walked away. She stopt at the Semliki long enuf to dry her clothes & get 2 boys to come with her to carry things. She had tea & came on to our outschool & had tea & a nap. Then came on & later had another nap & tea. Then met Cl etc just near the main rd. She got here ab’t 3 P.M. & drank cup after cup of tea and had bread & gravy.

After supper said she’d go to bed as she was tired. Said she has been relaxing fine. she can lie down & go right off to sleep!!! We were glad to have her in bed rather than at pr. mtg. Williams came ab’t 9:30 & said Mr Braun had written Dr. that they must find her & keep her in or he’d have to imprison her. They came slowly enquiring all along if she’d been seen. & course, found her here.

Thur. They talked with her this morning and she wanted to go with them & see Mr. Braun & get a permit to go wherever she pleased & whenever she pleased. So she went with them but left every thing here - for she expects to come right back armed with permit & stopping at villages all along the way. Williams feel as we do that she ought to be taken to the Institution in Nairobi & kept until she could be put on a plane for home.

Nov. 1944. Miss Dakin went to Eng. by boat and is no doubt now in Canada.

Wed. Mar. 17

Dakin’s story at back. We brot mail - Gladys had supper for us at our house. They ate here this morn. & then got away in good time & as no one has returned Mr Hunt must have gotten off. After pr. mtg Mr. & Mrs. Williams came to see ab’t Dakin. It’s still so hot. Only a shower here yesterday when we got into that awful down pour.

Thur. Mar. 18

Note from Gladys to say Mr H. & Charles got a free ride to Mbarara & would go on from there by bus. Williams took Dakin along & will see Mr. Braun. She thinks to get permit but really to be told she can’t be walking the roads. Getting things ready to go by postman in morning.

Fri. Mar. 19

Still so hot. Prayer mtg. but Dad staid a bed. he does every morning. His muscles are so sore. left chest & left leg. he can hardly walk. Man returned to Cl. and another to Oicha. Got a bit of mending done. Days slip by so fast I accomplish little. Wrote Gail & have socks ready to send.

Sat. Mar. 20

These seem to be the hard days of the yr. but now it’s some thing I’m not to blame for - at least I hope I’m not. Dakin hasn’t been brot back so she must be under Dr’s care. Baked “Dad’s delights” & upsidedown cake for tomorrow. Finished reading “Anne of the Island”.

Sun. Mar. 21

Dad couldn’t go to church so Yuda preached in his place. Ab’t 4 P.M. Mr Bell & Dr. came. Had been looking for Dakin all day. Natives have seen her but say she hides in the grass when she hears a car. She got away last night. Dr. is all in & so worried. Had tea and then fixed a bottle of coffee & lunch & they returned. If they don’t find her they will be back tomorrow. Daudi’s little boy has typhoid - pretty sick.

Mon. Mar. 22

No one has come so I wonder if they found her & took her home to Oicha. Every thing seemed to go wrong - some men sick. some went to get meat and wash had to be done as ‘twas soaked. Salumu went for butter & isn’t back yet. Asked to have Kiny. stay from school so wash is done & dry. Trying to rain a bit. Hope ‘twill.

Tues. Mar. 23

Still no sign of Dakie. Neither has the mail man come. The butter man came early this morn. Baked do nuts & bread ready to send out to Cl & Gl. but will wait til post comes. Little John got a nasty bump today on a stone. made a cut ½ in. long. I’ve started pink sweater for Mary Anne.

Wed. Mar. 24

Mail man came ab’t 9 A.M. Letters say Dakie turned bad Sat. & they locked her in & she tore screen & got out & Dr & Jim started search at 3 A.M. When they returned from here they found her in hut at Semliki & persuaded her to get into car. They have to guard her day & night. We do pray something may be done very soon. Sent man to Cl. Mr Hunt hasn’t come either. Miss N. led pr. mtg.

Thur. Mar. 25

Sun. Oct. 10

Very quiet day. & so hot. We had roast duck. I staid from first mtg & all help went. Then I went to 2nd. Dr asked me to read a sermon of John Newton’s. ‘Twas very good on “Searching the Scriptures”. Alice came this eve & others & made music on Brands phono.

Mon. Oct. 11

They came in ab’t 2. Had lunch on way. They think they’ll go back tomorrow. Mother seems willing. Agnes brot some bacon but some isn’t too good. Exchanged news & doings. Cl & Mr Paul did not go to Watalinga. Cl was ill so went to Kaparatas instead. Miss Hulpke will stay with Mother when I can’t.

Tues. Oct. 12

Now the last “fixing” is over & truly it wasn’t nearly so bad as the neck. They gave him a spinal needle & he felt nothing. and they brot him back in 45 min. While he was there it rained hard. Jim & Agnes decided not to go back now. So much work. but hope to come later. I ate dinner here at Beckers.

Wed. Oct. 13

Since Cl. is at Semliki we decided we’d send a man with word ab’t the op. so Jim went to Beni & Mr. Brashler & I with him. I got some things & cash and sent the man from there & when nearly home I found he hadn’t taken my letter & parcel. Only Cl’s khakis, the post, & butter! Men are so scarce so we wont send another. Dad didn’t rest well & has been restless and achey all day. Staid in bed. Drinks only.

Thur. Oct. 14

All the sick had quiet night. The moon is so bright. John was sweating so that at 1 we changed clothes & sheet but he went off to sleep again. Bob Deans came in with a big Gov’t truck & had supper at Beckers. Mr Williams returned from Nizi where he took his car for repair, & brot nice mail. Shaffers write they’ll be here last of Oct. Expect Gail on Sat.

Fri. Oct. 15

John was allowed ab’t all that was going along line of eats. Dr. says he has malaria so he takes 3 quinines a day for 3 days. I had tea at Mother’s & enlarged the new pajamas of Americani. Finished reading “Barabbas”. Marie Correlli. Don’t like it so well as some of her others.

Sat. Oct. 16

Tho I went up to the road & waited and 3 cars came, Gail was not on any of them. I’m very disappointed & so will Gl. be. John had his first movement while I was at break. Dr. dressed it and says it is coming fine. Mother H. had very bad gas spell this eve. Mrs. Stough has been miserable today.

Sun. Oct. 17

Another quiet Sun. I went to 2nd mtg. Mother H. had very good night. Dad did too. also Mrs. S. Agnes gave Conf. report at service took til after 5. Then I brot notes & read to Dad. He came to dinner again but had other meals in bed. No dressing today.

Mon. Oct. 18

Last yr. we didn’t see all this - but God did. Agnes asked us up to supper. & tea. We went & had a nice time. Heard the phono records Miss Russ made in Kingwana. Got letters finished for mail. Baked 2 rhubarb pies and 2 crusts for lemon filling.

Tues. Oct. 19

Mother had a bad night but is better today. By this time Cl & Gl should know why they got no letter at Semliki. Dad had to go to Dr. before I got back from Bells and needs no more packing. We took a long walk & had to hustle home because of rain. Finished reading John Halifax.

Wed. Oct. 20

Made lemon pie - and cinnamon rolls. Rainy til 10 or so. Lovely music by Scotch Orch. at 1:15. Went to Bells for supper after long walk & after supper had more music. Sort o’ getting things together. Dad’s needle effected him badly. Mother H. pretty miserable.

Thur. Oct. 21

Dr. has fever. Will he be able to go tomorrow? Lovely A.M. but rainy P.M. Have things pretty well packed up as we eat at 6:15. I hate to leave Dad as Westcotts haven’t yet come. tho they likely will tomorrow. Dr. doesn’t want Dad to leave til next time - in 2 wks - when he goes over. Had nice walk out to road & then collected cuttings etc at Bells.

Fri. Oct. 22

Dr. feels better & realizing Miss Hiles needs him he decided to come. Arrived by 9:30. Every one was glad to see me but very disappointed Dad hadn’t come. Had hi tea here to celebrate. Gladys had baked a lovely cake. Very sorry Dad isn’t here. Roberts are up in his house & a tent. I’m alone & I don’t like it.

Sat. Oct. 23

No Westcotts yet. Baked pie & cookies. all unpacked & settled but can’t fill Dad’s place. All praise Gladys as a housekeeper & shouldn’t W’s come I’ll be ever so sorry I left Dad. R’s have early tea & break sent up. Miss Hiles eats with me at 8. Cl. & Gl. eat at 7

Sun. Oct. 24

Awakened ab’t 4 - there was a bang of something but don’t know what. couldn’t sleep again so rested long this P.M. Am reading Gribble’s life. It’s good, well written, but knowing the facts of the first part, it seems a bit over drawn. For eve service am reading Paget Wilkes “Dynamic of faith”.

Mon. Oct. 25

Roberts seem to enjoy their quarters up at Dad’s. We moved a good bed up for her to sleep on. They left ab’t 7 for bed. Miss Hiles always goes before dark. Miss F. called & we chatted. Gl. mended socks. No mail man yet. Decided to set up U’s pretty table in Gl’s living room so as to have the small one for guest room.

Tues. Oct. 26

Talked over lots of things with Gl and Cl. and really did very little else. Baked corn muffins. Writing at Dads letter and Agnes’s. Gl. making her dress. pink flowers with rickrack. Man came - little mail. No Gail. Dad OK.

Wed. Oct. 27

Finished fixing up deck chairs. Made one new & mended other. Got started with knitting toes on a pr of socks for Cl. Man went to Oicha for medicine. A year ago!!!! [with Claudon & Gladys at their honeymoon camp near Narok]

Thur. Oct. 28

Gl. cut out my white with black figures. Making it like the figured blue rayon. Cl & Gl. want to go to Costermansville in 2 wks. I don’t see how I can go tho.

Fri. Oct. 29

Gl. worked at my dress. Man left with post. Paid men. I finally said if Shaffers come & will see to things and Dr. says Dad can go - I’ll go too. I don’t enjoy this being aloneness.

Sat. Oct. 30

Gl had Hollowe‘en party & supper. Jack-o-lanterns of paipai with candles - black cats & witches all over the walls popcorn balls made like ears of corn. First we had guessing game - really all were - all from Bible. Weren’t thro with supper til 7.

Sun. Oct. 31

Mail came as we came from church by man Gl. sent on Wed. Gail is at Oicha so Cl. Gl & I will go early in morning. Miss White had stroke & is at Ocha. Letter from Bissetts says Miss Rhodes is in mental hospital in Nairobi. Agnes Hammerberg gone back to Gombari tho Dr. said So. Af. again. She has no faith that that will help & is depending on the Lord.

Mon. Nov. 1

Got away ab’t 5 & did some shopping but couldn’t do any thing at the office as it is some sort of saints day. Went to Oicha in time for dinner. Mr Bell would have brot Dad & Gail out this P.M. if we hadn’t come. Mr Paul came too on way home from Katwa. Miss White died on Fri. funeral Sat.

Tues. Nov. 2

We left right after break. Dr. says Dad can take the Coster. trip without any risk. So - - we’ll see. Collected things at Beni and had a big load. Got stuck coming up from the last bridge. spent ½ hr. working on car then came on slowly. Every one glad to see Dad. It’s surely nice to have a whole family again.

Wed. Nov. 3

And this eve ab’t 4:30 Shaffers came. It is good to see them again. Grace has fever so went to bed at once. Talked out on veranda. Lookt at pictures. Got news at 8 then all scattered.

Thur. Nov. 4

Killed a large pig - Fr. 300. so we hope Dr. comes. Grace is in bed all day with fever. Mrs. S. is very willing to look after things here - but we’ll have to see what Dr. says ab’t her. Picnic lunch below falls. I staid with Grace.

Fri. Nov. 5

Dr. came & Mr. Harter. He wants Shaffers next wk. and we leave early Mon. so they’ll go that day too. They brot such a nice letter from Mrs Propst - all about J. Herman’s visit. & pictures. Jim & Agnes may come tomorrow.

Sat. Nov. 6

Jim & Agnes did not come but de Wildes did. They all look better for their trip. The baby is darling - so chubby. Again a nasty situation (ab’t cut trees) which threatens the peace & unity we have been enjoying. God give us tact and love and forbearance.

Sun. Nov. 7

Dad spoke very nicely and made all very clear that he would take no money for cutting trees but pay it himself into Treasury & he did. I hope they will profit by it. The church met this P.M. & among other things took up Bageni’s case & he must leave. I’m sorry in a way & yet I think it’s right.

Mon. Nov. 8 Kitsombiro

Came on out to Schmitts after driving by. He had no room to sleep us. While he & Cl went to R. to see ab’t these houses - we 4 ate supper. Then they did when they got back. We came on ab’t 10:30. Nice cabins here @ 50. a bed.

Wed. Nov. 10

Mon. Nov. 15

Holiday so could not finish shopping. Browns were at dentists but not finished and this eve Mr. Christensen & another worker have come. Hollands surely are “all things to all men”. Had long sing - every one doing some thing. Raining a bit. We hope twill cont. all night.

Tues. Nov. 16 Mutaho

The 3 went down town & then we got off. just a bit before Kivimba when coming round a very sloping corner with steep drop - we met a truck. Cl. pulled into the bank which gave us a head on bang but saved us from being bumped off the road & sent rolling. All were going slowly & the truck merely had a bit of a bung in the mud guard - our bumper was off at one end & badly bent. but we were too far over. due to the slant of the road. The Indian made a fuss & wanted 800 damage Cl gave him 500 but the damage wasn’t 50 frcs.

Wed. Nov. 17

We were glad no one was hurt. I got car sick & it rained so we had curtains down much which made it worse. Ate lunch at Kivimba. saw church & grave & outside of houses. Got here ab’t 4:30.
