WHAT IS THIS COMING YEAR?
It is a door,
By which we reach new fields
Of service for our God and
fellow
man:
A door by which we can
Explore
Wide spheres of usefulness
Our world to bless;
And reap the sheaves God’s
Word
of
witness yields.
It is a task
Set by the Master of our
souls,
A little part of our life’s
work:
And so we ask
The holy wisdom, which alone
controls
Our labor, teaching
what and
where to sow:
That the year, at its
end,
May show God’s glory
and man’s
profit blend.
It is a book,
With many pages and as
yet all
white,
On which to write
The history of thought,
and deed,
and word
In this new group of days.
We pray Thee, Lord,
As Thou shalt look
Upon the book, when written
o’er,
may all be to Thy praise.
- William Olney.
IN
THE
BEGINNING, GOD
Key Note
Gen. 1-1
Another year has ended,
For some it is the last;
Whatever be its record,
We
cannot change the past.
But stretching out before us
The New Year lieth fair;
God help us to be
careful
What shall be written there.
“But
this
one thing I do. I press toward the mark for the prize of the
high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
- Phil. 3,
13-14.

Let me grow old lovely - growing old -
So many fine things do;
Laces, and ivory and gold,
And silks, need not be new.
There is a healing in old
trees
Old streets a glamour
hold
Why may not I, as well as
these
Grow lovely, growing
old?

Knee doesn’t hurt much but stiffens & is still
swelled . Just before classes formed, Mrs. Selfridge the new
pastor’s wife had sort of fit - made noises & her body

them for them at once. Then she was off again early this
morn. Canned apples 3 qts & made some jelly. Getting
more letters off. No one home yet after 9.
Tues. Dec. 23
Baked Toll house cookies. Had letter from Byrd. He
will come after all. by bus. tomorrow eve. Twill be
very nice. Have chickens dressed. Made out the fondant will
do crispies tomorrow. Haven’t seen Mrs. T. all day. Had wash
done but it’s not dry as it is very cloudy. Several Xmas
letters again - some had $1s in & Gl. got one with $20
in it.
Wed. Dec. 24
Byrd came early. Cl went down to do some shopping
& brot him home. I baked pies - and coffee cake ring.
This P.M. ironed. I’ve my things in Mother’s room & Byrd
has my nook & Bill will sleep in the bed in basement.
Expect Scotty & Mildred for his room. Billy has
tonsilitis & is cross.
Thur. Dec. 25
W’at a day. Vane & Ruth got here by 10. Then
the fun began. Skookie is quite feverish tonite & Billy
too & both are bound to have the same things but Billy
is quite happy with his wind up train. & steam shovel.
Faith has large dog to ride. Ruths stay. Had an awful
good dinner. Frances seems to know how to cook. Lots of
candy here Byrd brot a large box. The young folks took Gl.
for ride to see pretty lights.
Fri. Dec. 26
I picked up the cold & slept little. Vanes got
away by 9. Byrd by 10. John & Geraldine Martin called
this P.M. I’m taking aspirin etc & hope to shake this
cold. Hung out & took down wash & dampened. Letter
from Anna Z. with $25. in it. Bless her. Wrote Jessie. Gl.
getting last things done. letters etc. Cl is folding
announcements. They are so cute & original. To bed with
hot water bottle.
Sat. Dec. 27
Didn’t sleep well - neither did Cls. as Billy is
ab’t sick & Faith seems coming down too. Gl. also has
sore throat. I napped A.M. & P.M. & used mostly
liquids. Nice hot bath. Ans. up all the Calif letters. but
nothing else. Did a bit of ironing. Frances finished it.
Blank from Office to fill out for B. Congo visa.
Sun. Dec. 28
Quiet day - didn’t go outside. All colds seem
better. Billy ate 6 doses of Ex Lax so he should be
better. Aunt Hattie & Uncle Bert called. I wrote notes
for in announcement cards all day. My tummy still rebels
when I eat. Feel just like malaria. Lips dry & peeling.
Wonder what this week will have for us all.
Mon. Dec. 29
Ab’t 7 P.M. our lights all went out so we are going
to bed early. Frances has been in bed all day. I think
I’m better but still cough & want no food. The Ex
Lax didn’t harm Billy any. Cl. is sniffling & Bill
didn’t care much for supper. We had clothes washed - & I
have all dampened ready to iron. Check from Uncle George of
$135. toward memorial for John.
Tues. Dec. 30
Now Gl. says: if baby doesn’t come tomorrow she’s
going to wait til next year! I ironed all A.M. Had miserable
night of coughing and sweating. Seems looser than ever so
hope twill soon let up. Wrote some letters - to put in with
announcements. not all written yet. Gl. & Faith both
seem worse too. Scotty & Mildred came for dinner. Will
stay few days.
Wed. Dec. 31
Rained all day. While we aren’t yet on our way back
yet Gl. is one of us and so we are sure the Lord will also
do this for us. - and by end of next year have us all in our
place for Him. How quieting & peaceful it is to just
leave it all for Him to see to. Seems no meeting tonight -
perhaps because of rain. Bill brot his mary Ellen to spend
evening.
The year has been one of the pleasantest ever and that,
when I thot my furlo would be lonely & flat! The Lord
has so wonderfully opened the way before me - step by step -
and every one has been so kind that I know it has all been
of Him & how I pray I may have given Him the glory &
praise I should every time I witnessed to His leading &
care & provision. Now we seem to be halted again as the
baby hasn’t yet come and I hope I may accomplish His will
here. It’s so pleasant to be here. I sometimes forget I
don’t really belong. Mother Taylor is so generous & the
children so kind. Scotty & Mildred are here & we all
enjoy all the others. God bless them all.
