weave it blocks together – now must knit ribbing.
Aug. 3, Sun.
Another blessed communion Sunday. Cl. spoke so
well. I'm sure there was real heart searching.
No guests so had quiet day. Got things ready for
Dr. to take to Rethy. Miss Edna goes along – also Dr.
Barlow.
Aug. 4, Mon.
Misses Buchanan & Hudson called this P.M. on
way back from Rw. They went Fri, but thot I had gone
so didn't come here. All packed up & what with natives
we have a real load. Cl. has bed roll ready – he will camp
out.
Aug. 5, Tues. Prue Frost (birthday)
HOME. Cl & I & our load got here ab't
11:30. Found every body here & ready for us. Had lots of
bananas cut for Cl. Klines had a lovely dinner & Cl.
left for his old camp down by the Semliki. Hopes to get an
animal tonight or morning – but wont come in as he goes
back.
Aug. 6, Wed.
Getting some letters off to send by Dr. Went to the
garden – nothing much there. Want to plant tomorrow. Back
& forth several times & always some thing to talk
about – so the time passes. Had washing done.
Aug. 7, Thur.
Dr. came ab't 4 P.M. Mr & Mrs Braun and 2
children & Mrs. de Maar & baby were waiting to see
him & lots of natives. He finished ab't 6 & we had
supper then he left & hopes to go to Biasiko tomorrow!
What a man! I sent flowers etc to Agnes and birthday parcel
to Gladys.
Aug. 8, Fri.
Cleaned living room. Canned 2 ½ qts corn. Radio
said Dr. got to O. last night & left for Biasiko this
morning. Gl. said Cl. tried for an animal down on the
Semliki but no chance as they have been shot at so much by
customs man. Then he went to Kaparata & the grass was
too hi. He got only a pig.
Aug. 9, Sat.
Was preparing waffle batter for supper for us 3
when Dixes 7 came in. So got a real supper. Just after they
got here it rained quite hard. Mas. found 2 more kittens so
there are 4 – 2 white & 2 dark.
Aug. 10, Sun.
Folks here to break. late for they got up early
& went to hotel to see the snow & it was lovely
& clear. Got good pictures. Communion service – dinner
at Klines – then they left for Oicha ab't 3. Tea here &
our service. Got some letters off with them.
Aug. 11, Mon. [diary says “Tues.”]
Worked at covering Gl's ragged quilt. Not finished.
Musa & Koro went to get elephant out of trap & as it
was cold & rainy it was not a good day to wash. Hope to
do it tomorrow. Also to pick berries. Kittens are getting
tamer.
Aug. 12, Tues. Gladys-birthday [diary says “Wed.”]
Canned more corn. Mas. baked bread – but not very
nice. Have begun tying the quilt. Cleaned rooms & got
beds ready again. Nice day so wash got dry. Picked berries
but not many. 2 pts canned.
Aug. 13, Wed.
Today I took off the adhesive support. It's very
tender & still aches & is not in place – but may not
stay so large – as it is likely swelled still. Boys pembe
ing F's house white – hard to cover that pink.
Aug. 14, Thur.
Klines got back ab't 7 & the children look
good. They didn't see Maclures but I'm expecting them for
dinner tomorrow. I worked at my sweater some. Got a tiny pig
21 kilos. Am thankful for that much. Not much mail.
Batteries from Lo.
Aug. 15, Fri.
Had nice dinner ready for all & no one came,
nor have come yet & its 8:40. We hope no one is sick.
Gary said he did not see them at Rethy. Finished my sweater
& we have rooms all cleaned. Pig is mostly in the
refrig. Gl. wrote Dr. Mc Quilkin has gone.
Aug. 16, Sat.
Radio said they'd be here P.M. and they got here
ab't 3. Had tea for them & all bathed before supper on
the lawn. Afterward played Muggins and then talked – 9:30
now. Letters from Rays. & clippings ab't Dr. Mc Q. Went
very suddenly.
Aug. 17, Sun.
Very chilly all day, so had fire in grate & at
hi tea some sat in living room. We will be a mob next Sun.
if Griffins come. Did some writing. Another elephant in pit
so very many were absent from church.
Aug. 18, Mon.
Pleasant most all A.M. so they went to the river.
This P.M. went along the water ditch - & got caught in a
rain. A bit of mail came from Mutwangas – slips for 2
parcels and Klines have 5 so he goes tomorrow to get them.
Aug. 19, Tues.
Stanley got back ab't noon. Brot 2 parcels – but not
the Jan. one. Ab't 3 P.M. Cl's drove in – it was pouring
rain. Gl & children will stay a day or 2 while Cl. goes
to shoot. So glad to have them tho we are a bit crowded.
Such nice things in parcels.
Aug. 20, Wed.
Cl. got off by 4 and was back by 8 P.M. with 3
buffalo, & he didn't even have a native with him. Gl.
altered a dress that came in the parcel – the house dress –
the pretty jersey doesn't need altering – size 20 ½ seems
abt right. 5 folks – Ams but one from Nairobi – came for the
night – no room at hotel.
Aug. 21, Thur.
Cls staid til after dinner at the river. We baked
buns – potatoes, & they roasted corn. A bit of sunshine
but not much. Wonder if Griffins will be here tomorrow. So
cold we have fire all day. Took
Esthers gray cat to Isayas near Mutwanga.
Aug. 22, Fri.
No Griffins tho their rooms are ready. A car came
after supper & I ran down to greet them & it was
tourists from Uganda – no place at the hotel but I didn't
care to risk using G's beds & then having them come in
so they went back to Beni.
Aug. 23, Sat.
Griffins came when we were almost thro supper.
Couldn't eat on lawn too dreary. I baked a berry pie for
tomorrow. It's nice having G's here – so glad I have room
for them in the house.
Aug. 24, Sun.
All services as usual. The West Nilers all had
dinner at Klines – chicken dinner – so G's & I were
alone. All had tea here and service – Raining some.
Aug. 25, Mon.
Rained hard all night & until noon. Herbert
couldn't sleep. I saw a light at 4:30 & found him
sitting by fire place but there was no fire. I got wood
& made fire. He was miserable all day & at 4 P.M. he
asked Stanley to drive them to Oicha – so they have gone –
so sorry – Do hope he is better. This place is no good for
asthmatics.
Aug. 26, Tues. Beth-birthday
Stanley got back this P.M. Very little mail. Mr. G.
was much better soon after taking some medicine Dr. gave
him. Stanley left there early – didn't see anyone before he
left. Radio said Mrs. Doerkson will fly home soon for med.
help.
Aug. 27, Wed.
Lovely again until 3 P.M. Then was raining hard at
5 when a Dr. Herd?? & daughter from Nairobi drove in -
“no room at the hotel”. The daughter sleeps here & he in
F's house & eat at Klines. Made up Esther's cape tom.
[cape tomato - “tree tomato” or “tamarillo”] jelly. We thot
a bridge was out tween here & Mutwanga but must be fixed
for these came.
Aug. 28, Thur.
Just got started with the roses when Mr. Cook of
Jo'burg came with a couple from Montana. Dr. Hursh & his
daughter left after breakfast. This P.M. we drove to de
Wildes but they were not home so we went to the hotel &
had a look round then came home.
Aug. 29, Fri.
Such a beautiful day. Stanley, Mr. M. & Bertha
took lunch & went up the river. Carmel & Mrs. M.
took children to river for picnic lunch. Anne & I were
alone. I worked in the garden some & wrote at letters
too. It began to rain ab't 4:30. The folks went into a cave
til it was over.
Aug. 30, Sat.
Baked berry pie & crust for lemon &
cocoanut custard for dinner & do-nuts for supper.
Charging the battery so no news. Got one rabbit knitted on
sweater. Pleasant eve – supper outside.
Aug. 31, Sun.
Klines were invited to de Maars – the agricultural
man's house at Mutwanga for dinner. I had made a small berry
pie & lemon pie – so we ate them both. Services as
usual.
Sep. 1, Mon. Warren [birthday] 1890
Folks went to de Wildes for pictures & on way
back stopt at Jacquemins & some went to the over hanging

ironed but will be in the morning.
Sep. 2, Tues. Lora [birthday] 1876
They had to go to the Lusilubi for a swim &
pictures. I made sandwiches and they finally got away by
12:15. They were to get our post & take it to Oicha for
Mary H to bring on Thur. Radio said they are coming.
Sep. 3, Wed.
Had that queer feeling again – like one night at
Oicha. I felt my pulse tonight & found it irregular.
Seems better now. Cleaned living & dining rooms &
bed room almost ready spreads not dry. Rainy all PM &
heavy clouds at dark. Fire feels nice. Wrote Lynns.
Sep. 4, Thur.
but no Dr. & no word from him so we look for
him tomorrow. We may hear on radio in morning. I'll bet the
girls are disappointed. My head has been bad & again the
irregular pulse – but had supper at Ks - & played
Muggins here – so feel better.
Sep. 5, Fri.
They came ab't 10:30. Dr. was busy til 1. The girls
brot – typewriters, mimeograph etc etc - & declare they
are staying the mo. I say OK. Played Muggins this eve. Nice
mail – haven't read all letters yet.
Sep. 6, Sat.
Baked as usual. Mas. made choc. cake after new
recipe but it fell but still tastes good. Played Muggins.
Mary is always near end but last game Evelyn was last.
Coralee is ab't best – so quick.
Sep. 7, Sun.
Quiet day – ab't 4 a car of Greeks etc came to go
up the Lusilubi for a beer drink! We don't own the valley so
couldn't say anything. Had tea, news & service. A plane
going 700 mi per hr. in a demonstration in Eng. exploded in
the air & the debris falling killed 125 persons.
Sep. 8, Mon.
Working at letters mostly. Girls got a good number
off too. Evelyn 22! Klines decided to all go to Oicha
tomorrow. Sent a few things to Gl.

All here to tea & evening service. Bill D. spoke so well
at the morning service.
Sep. 15, Mon.
Deans left after breakfast. I sent Gl. the quilt I

Carmel made Gary's birthday cake. I made fudge to
send John & date cookies for the others. This eve

played checkers. Radio said Mrs Doerkson's op. was
successful & she hopes to be back by Dec.
Sep. 26, Fri.
Radio didn't work right so got no messages. We just
had to de-frost the refrig as it was doing it any
way. I cut up the ham & salted it – because it was
thawing. Now things are getting cold again. We had ice cream
for supper. Getting some letters off.

lovely music – the amplifier is so fine.
Nov. 30, Sun.
Quiet day. Finished reading C.I.M report for 1951
& makes me feel sad for the Christians in China. and now
those in Kenya too. Have been much in prayer for them all.
How the devil is fighting. Must be near his finish.
Dec. 1, Mon.
Radioed Klines Dr. can't say when he can go out so

Dec. 18, Thur.
Good rain just at dark so when Stanley came he got
stuck. No one knows where Bells are. They were following Cl.
who drove their truck – a wk ago Tues. and no one has heard
from them. so Cl. is going tomorrow to find them. Ray may go

radio. The boys would be back this eve. We hope to hear in
the morning. Native boys came to practice for Christmas.
Dec. 21, Sun.
Radio said the boys got back last eve. The reason
Bells didn't come was car trouble. Agnes wrote at once but
it hasn't arrived. Rays will be out tomorrow and perhaps
Cls. They didn't say. I ate dinner at Klines. & they had
supper here.
Dec. 22, Mon. Alice [birthday]

gifts under our tree. Klines parcels have not come so they
have not so many as usual.
Dec. 25, Thur.
Such a wonderful day – full of joy and blessing for
soul & body. After early breakfast the parcels under the
tree were distributed. Faith & Sally Jo were so excited
they just ran from one to another to show their gifts. Dick
hardly moved & wasn't excited til he saw roller skates.
The turkeys were fine. Dinner at Klines – a lot left over.
Music this eve. God is so good. We praise Him.

for a weiner roast tomorrow, at the river. Nice walk &
sit in moonlight.
Dec. 27, Sat.
Weiner roast was almost a failure for it rained all
the time we were there. Then sunshine so the whole crowd
(almost) went to the hotel for fun in the pool. All here to
supper & then to Klines to see Manila & India
slides. Mas. was busy most all day.
Florence & family at Rwenzori
Dec.
28, Sun.
Had some of Dad's records this eve. Memories! Such a lovely day – the last
Sun. of 1952. It's so nice to be together. All had supper
here after taking pictures of the whole party. The day has
been bright with just enuf clouds to get good pictures.
Billy complains of headache – hope he will be better by
morn.
Dec. 29, Mon.
Cooks left ab't 8:15 & our car left shortly
after. Wish we could peek in & see how they are in camp.
Gary went too. I'm crocheting at the bed spread Ruth Collins
gave me in 1944. Needs just a little to finish it.
Dec. 30, Tues.
Who should drive in ab't 6 but Bishop & Mrs.
Morris. They had tried to tell us over the radio that they
were coming but it has been very difficult to get messages –
static bad. They are sleeping in Miss F's house. Mrs K. gave
them supper.
Dec. 31, Wed.
Morrises got away by 6:30 and hoped to see the
boys. They got in ab't 4:30 and had seen Morrises. Cl. took
meat 2 waterbuck & 2 buffalo – to Oicha & then came
back. Ray etc waited at the turn off. So nice to have all
here again but Cls will have to go tomorrow.
1952
Memorandum A
The year has been a busy happy one for me. Had
guests most of the time with 6 wks off when I broke my wrist
– and again after Thanksgiving which gave me time to do
things that have been waiting. And now the close of the yr
has been ideal.
Memorandum B
Souls have been saved and the work goes on altho
sometimes pretty discouraging. The Mau Mau trouble in Kenya
is very serious. lots of raids & burning & stealing.
But R.V.A. is to open so John is going down.
