Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary, 1953 IndexJan. 1, Thur.And today Clo. [Claudon] left. ab't 2 P.M. and the de Wilde family called – had tea – Ray fixed my shoes – also some for Betty. What will this year bring to us all? It would be grand if the Lord should return – but may we be faithful should He tarry.Jan. 2, Fri.Helpt in kitchen. Paluku has bad throat so left after washing dishes – Boys did a big wash – didnt get dry – 2 European women killed in Nairobi – Gov't doesn't seem to be getting things under control very much.Jan. 3, Sat.Rainy all A.M. Boys got some clothes ironed but some didn't get dry. Paluku hasn't come to work so I helpt quite a bit – all here for supper on the lawn.Jan. 4, Sun.Fairly quiet day. Got some letters off. Had prayer for Conf. Klines had supper here. By next Sun. John [Stauffacher, Raymond's son] will be on his way to R.V.A. Ray & John take mohogo out to meet Cl in the morning.Jan. 5, Mon.Ray & John left by 4 & met Cl at the turn off – all went for a hunt & got a water buck which Ray took along with the mohogo to Oicha & brot the organ back – so we are beginning to move.Jan. 6, Tues.Stanley went to Beni brot quite a nice mail – but no parcels yet. A man was hurt by a leopard caught in a small trap – Ray, John & Stanley went to shoot it but it had the trap on its foot & had torn the rope & was loose growling in the thick bush – it got too dark & was too dangerous so came back.Jan. 7, Wed.Got away from Rw – by 10:15. Found Pinkertons here wanting to go with Rays so I'm staying over & will go with Cls. Bells are here & staying at Evelyns but had supper here. Dessert was ice cream soda!!Jan. 8, Thur.When we went to pr mtg the Misses M. Wilson, Rose Mary, Lutz, Waller & Weber in Zola's car were there – on way home from Kivu. Dr. & Jim went out to Rw. Birthday surprise pot luck supper on Eve – Lights went out but came on again just as we at the door began to sing. Had a nice time – Agnes gave me pretty dark blue dress.Jan. 9, Fri.3 ladies left this morning. Klines came & now we are all packed & ready for early start at 5. Claudons all go in the big truck which is loaded. They are taking their big refrig for Stams. They got a smaller one.Jan. 10, Sat.Rethy [annual General Conference]– All got away by 5:15, Clo in the big truck with a big load. Mrs Camp, Miss Edna & I with Bells. Others with Klines. We S's are in Trout house – John didn't go as they were late for the boat but there is another tomorrow that he takes – better connection. A good crowd here.Jan. 11, Sun.Ray & Cl took John to the boat early. Prayer mtg led by Jim & worship by Mr. Voller were so good & helpful, but as folks were going out some boys stirred up a swarm of bees near by & many folks were badly stung. Sir Arthur Smith especially. I had 15 or 20 mostly around ears & wrists. Boys apologized publicly.Jan. 12, Mon.Stings bothered in the night. I don't go to early prayers but all other mtgs. and all were so good. Ray is Conf. Chairman – C.P.C. discussion P.M. Lady Smith spoke to larger children on our lawn. Stunt night was really very good.Jan. 13, Tues.Went to T Pet. mtg – with children. Dr B led – it was very good. Then I came home with the children for Billy was in bed all day with bad throat. I did not go to big mtg this P.M. Miss Rowlee had larger children here. Am knitting a sock for M.A. to replace the one she lost.Jan. 14, Wed.All A.M. meetings so good. After dinner Cl. left in Dr's car taking Miss Edna to Oicha & Dr. is staying on. John is likely on train from Kisumu to Kijabe. Gl. had meeting on lawn & then games. I wrote at home letter.Jan. 15, Thur.To all meetings – except P.M. biz. Wrote some letters – all us children napped because of movies tonight. Expected to see “God of Creation” but some how it didn't come. Cl. came after we were up for the pictures. Ray at Council – Sara, M.A., Sally Jo & I came home at 8:45. Another picture was showing.Jan. 16, Fri.Right now it's raining – folks are not home from evening mtg. I staid with the children. Meetings today very good – sort of wind up – only biz tomorrow & music tomorrow night. Trying to arrange to get every body to Oicha & every car will be loaded to capacity.Jan. 17, Sat.[in pencil] Some one has borrowed my pen. Biz all A.M. I staid with children. Sally has fever – Gl. has bad cold – Betty broke her glasses. Expects new ones but is pretty helpless without. She, MA & I went to musical.Jan. 18, Sun.A grand finish to a fine week. Dedication of ab't a doz babies & then communion service – and praise mtg this eve. Gl is sick with a bad cold & Sara staid with Sally.Jan. 19, Mon.Oicha. Very hot & dusty – Klines went right on thro. We did shopping & then went in to Nyankundi & ate our lunch at Stevens - & called at Bill Deans. Gaunts came right behind us. Buyses & Littlejohns too.Jan. 20, Tues.Left Oicha after break. Stopt in Beni & got here in good time for dinner. Had baths & read at mail which Klines brot yesterday. My Hoopole parcel came. Gaunts & Betty Wilson came ab't 4. All bathed & settled – every one very tired. Inauguration day for Pres. Isenhower. Ray is sick with cold & malaria.Jan. 21, Wed.Picked strawberries – not many. Killed Klines pig. Wrote some letters. Boys did big wash. So hot & dry. We'd love a rain. R's cold is still pretty bad. All rest a lot – and eat well.Jan. 22, Thur.Just read a yr. ago to Miss Wilson. Cut up & canned the pig because Klines may put out the ice box so it wont stay good long these hot days. Yuda came. Koro goes tomorrow. Mas. next day. Ray had fever last night but better today.Jan. 23, Fri.Radio said M.A. is sick. No Reitsmas yet. Very cloudy and threatening. Am watering the flowers so perhaps it will rain. Yuda helpt today. Mas. baked white cake & mock fruit cake – also bread & buns. Finished Mary A's sock so now she has a pair.Jan. 24, Sat.Klines didn't leave til after 10. Dr. Reitzmas came while we were having picnic lunch at the river. They are settled in Miss Frost's [Prudence Elisabeth Frost] house. Yuda did very well today – together we baked squash pie & bread, buns & coffee cake. Supper on lawn. Music this eve.Jan. 25, Sun.Had a nice rain this eve. Fair crowd out to church. Ingles daughter came to borrow the microscope – to exam blood from cows as the vet. was coming. Man, wife & son were killed by Mau Mau – 60 mi. north of Nairobi.Jan. 26, Mon.Ray left in a hurry for Oicha. We could get no news this morning. All but Mrs. L. , Sara, Sally & I are going to the Lake [Lake Edward/Ishango] in the morning. All packed & ready. Sally got stung by a wasp – had hi temp at supper time but better now.Jan. 27, Tues.Reitsmas left for Oicha right after breakfast as he had a bad night. Littlejohns didn't go to the Lake either. Gaunts & Wilson did & had a nice time. Klines came just at noon – brot very little mail. Helen H. may come with Ray tomorrow & go with Stanley on Fri.Jan. 28, Wed.Ray came before dinner & brot Helen. I made do-nuts for dinner. Helen sleeps at Klines & may have breakfast there as we will eat early – as Rays want to be off for Andudu. Lots of fun playing “Muggins”.Jan. 29, Thur.Rays & Littlejohns left ab't 7:40. Spose they are at Andudu tonight. Helen is here. We hope Paul will come on Sat. Had supper on lawn. Made jello with fruit Helen brot. Finished Billy's socks & have begun Betty's yellow ones.Jan. 30, Fri.Stanley & Helen left ab't 9. Bot a lot of green peas which I'll can tomorrow. Baked cottage pud & had Strawberries over it. Had a bad wind storm for ab't ½ hr. Lots of grass blew off the roofs. No rain tho. Washed goi today & it dried.Jan. 31, Sat.Not much baking to do. Berry pie of canned berries. Pauls came ab't 5 – brot Lubero flour. Stanley wrote Carmel that it's Pauls anniversary tomorrow so Carmel is baking a cake in the morning & will make more ice cream.Feb. 1, Sun.Paul spoke at A.M. service and read a Keswick address this eve. This is their 29th anniversary. The cake was very pretty. Sandwiches of Spam – jelly – apricots & ice cream. A very nice time.Feb. 2, Mon.I persuaded Pauls to stay today so we have had some good visit. Carmel had supper here. They did some washing & ironing – so were busy. Gaunts & Miss Wilson left by 8. Want to stay at Bogoro tonight.Feb. 3, Tues.Hurlburts left by 7:15 and Stanley came ab't 3. brot nice mail but no parcel. Kornelio is back too as are most all who went. MacIntoshes may come on Fri & Mas comes with them. $25. from Dr. Dix & 25 from Stacy. Thank God.Feb. 4, Wed.Wrote at letters. Got nurses house cleaned & beds made. These beds are ready too. Mrs K. offers to sleep here but I'm alright. I sleep well. Macs may come on Fri.Feb. 5, Thur.Cleaned living room. Suddenly remembered Jorgensens might come tomorrow. Dr. came ab't 4 – had supper & was off by 6:15. Wants to go to Biasiko tomorrow. De Wildes & Mrs. Van Haan came to see Dr & had coffee here (with warm water).Feb. 6, Fri.Got corner room ready at Esther's for Jorgensens, but no one came. Got vegetable seed list ready to post. Carmel came & waited for 8 oclock news. Boys cleaned windows.Feb. 7, Sat.Macs came ab't 3 P.M. but no Jorgensens yet. Wonder what is keeping them. Supper on the lawn – spaghetti & sausage. Yuda did very well with baking bread. It's lovely. I made pie & cake.Feb. 8, Sun. A large crowd at church. Communion service was well attended. Mr. Mac preached. In P.M. had testimonies from those who attended conf. All were full of praise for what God had done – 30 or more backsliders reclaimed & several conversions.Feb. 9, Mon.Nareu returned with mail – only went this morning. Jorgensens will come the 16th. Now when will Reitsmas come? Letter from Co. She is sending another parcel – old quilt etc. Masikini is back on the job – pd Yuda. Got some letters written.Feb. 10, Tues.We baked cookies for Rethy children. Wrote some but knitted mostly. Think I can get them done so Macs can take them to Betty. They are yellow nylon – then I'll go at Johns next – Klines here til 9.Feb. 11, Wed.Baked date & heart cookies for Rethy. Radio said Dr. Reitsmas come tomorrow. Mass didn't go up to the pt as Kule didn't know he was to come. Finished Betty's socks.Feb. 12, Thur.Rained a bit over noon. Reitsmas came about 1. They say Cls are staying another wk at Bogoro. I'm sure Gl. can do with more rest. Got a few letters off.Feb. 13, Fri. (Friday 13th)Esther left after dinner. Macs left after break. Radio said Cls got back last eve. Canned 4 qts. dills & 3 qts crout, Mrs. Reitsma will can some tomatoes tomorrow. Macs took cookies & candy for the children at Rethy. 6 Kikuyu shot dead, some wounded & some captured near Thompson Falls. Earthquake in North Persia 1500 killed.Feb. 14, Sat.Klines went to Beni & got yellow fever inoc. Marj Mar left a note at Kircof [Kirchoff, Greek grocery in Beni] to say they were held up at the pontoon til 4 P.M. it was being moved, but she got the official's signature so hope that Cairo letter is mailed. A letter from M.E.W. folks – 5 want to come – either today or by Tues. No one came yet.Feb. 15, Sun.Stanley went to out schools. Mr & Mrs. Dewey – tourists – came in time for S.S. & staid to church too. They seemed very nice – took pictures. She was very touched during service – she wept. It is so warm today really hot tonight. O for some rain.Feb. 16, Mon.Mail brot notice of 3 parcels also 3 for Klines – now, how to get them? 'Twas so warm last night no one rested well. More Kikuyu killed & arrested and they also killed a teacher & beat up a pastor & 2 women. Awful!Feb. 17, Tues.Reitsmas took chest of drawers, the buffet, rocking chair & Klines 2 Jr beds & the baby pen Widmans left. So they have a huge load. I have some letters ready to post. No Jorgensens yet so perhaps they can get the parcels.Feb. 18, Wed.Reitsmas got away right after breakf and by 3 P.M. Jorgensens were here. They think they saw their truck on the Beni side of the Semliki for boys say Rs had car trouble when they got down the hill. So, tho I sent money & customs slips I don't know now when I'll get the parcels. Letter from Co saying they have 750. for mo.Feb. 19, Thur.Cool & cloudy most all day – but no rain. No M.E.U. guests yet. Men from Costers called trying to sell sprayer & solution for trees of all sorts.Feb. 20, Fri.Cooler all day – rained a bit east. Carmel & I listed things that I want of Miss Nowecks. It all comes to ab't $55. Getting a few letters off. Forgot to get the Nairobi news for 2 nights. Have John's sock well started now but had a time with it.Feb. 21, Sat.Usual work. Just at dark a car came – 5 Greeks, Indians, mulatto??? “Just to see” but what they could see after dark I don't know. They came in & talked – then left. Cloudy most all day. Jorgensens wanted to go to hotel to see Mt. Too cloudy.Feb. 22, Sun.Quiet day. Stanley preached – dinner late! but good. Wrote at letters. After eve service played Mrs. J's records and talked.Feb. 23, Mon.We went to de Wildes & got permit for Lake & to hotel for pictures. Now lunch is packed and letters etc ready for Gl. & the post. Will I really have the parcels tomorrow night.Feb. 24, Tues.The folks went to the Lake but it rained so much down there that they came back early. Stanley went to Oicha and Beni. Brot the 3 parcels - & we unpacked them – such a lot of nice things. They were sent Sept. 5, Oct. 21, Nov. 7.Feb. 25, Wed.Men dug up ½ the front lawn ready to sweep it clean & replant. But at noon it started to rain & kept up all P.M. - Wonder if they are really beginning. I'll soon get some seed put in. Uncle Dicks letter had seed of ruby gold tomato.Feb. 26, Thur.Another strip of lawn hoed over and another rainy P.M. Are the rains really here? Feb. 27, Fri.Jorgensens left ab't 2 – are no doubt at Oicha. Want to leave early in the morning. A little sprinkle at dark. K's didn't come for the news. Mass. baked buns & bread for them.Feb. 28, Sat.Not much to do but busy all day. Koronelio is sick so had his work to do. He has filaria & is taking treatments. Mas. baked a pie - & that was all. Ks here to supper.Mar. 1, Sun.Had dinner at Klines. Got another letter or two off. Read some – talked after service 7 letters went in the bag.Mar. 2, Mon.I had given up looking for Mc Dowells – then they came about 7:45. So they are settled. A Mr. Persifal & new bride called – on honey moon from Machakos. They say the Mau Mau situation is bad but not so bad as Pauline G. writes.Mar. 3, Tues.Wrote some – mended some. Mail came. Nice letters – one from Esther to say she is engaged!! One from Ray saying Sara is real miserable with her back & leg. Hope Dr. K who was soon coming was able to help her. John is happy at R.V.A.Mar. 4, Wed.Tourists came up & we had [lunch?] at Ks. The 2 M.E.U. young men Carlson & Egstrom came just after our lunch. Have been feeling punk all day so will give up my supper then go to bed. The young men are in the guest room. The other 3 are ill – couldn't come.Mar. 5, Thur.Written in Apr. - Oicha. My daily records stopt here as, Dr. came over with stretcher in car & brot me here those 50 awful miles. Dr. said it was dysentery (bassilary) [bacillary] & malaria.I asked Mr. Carlson to call Carmel ab't 2 A.M. when I couldn't stop vomitting - & Stanley left ab't 4 for Oicha to get in touch with Dr. who was still at Rethy but coming out that day. Dr. said to give aralen & wait his coming. Gl. came back with Stanley. My bowels were very loose – had to get up ab't every 20 min – also to vomit. Dr. came ab't 4. They had supper & then 'twas 7 or later when we got started back got here 10. I was terribly tired & soon went to sleep.Dr. came early & left tablets etc a bit later my heart acted up – the pain ws enuf. to make me sweat. They came & soon had it stopt. This was Fri. the 6th.That day the dysentery was bad up 18 – 20 times with some vomiting tho not so severe. Sun. morn Dr. radioed for Rays to come if they could. Sara was alone. Ray 40 mi in the bush. She sent a bicycler & by 3 P.M. they were ready to start. They came via Andudu & got here by 4 A.M. Twas so good to see them.They brot a hosp. bed – raised head – etc - & Sara took over – so Mary didn't have to come. Every one has been so good. I'm so thankful Rays are here. I wont have been so glad to go, tho – the nausea has been very annoying – all the time. The heart condition seems OK. & the dysentery cleared in a day.Mar. 14, Sat.Raymond left on Sat. the 14th for Rethy & on Mon. went with others to I.F.D mtg at Kijabe.Mar. 15, Sun.[no entry]Mar. 16, Mon.[no entry]Mar. 17, Tues.[no entry]Mar. 18, Wed.[no entry]Mar. 19, Thur.[no entry]Mar. 20, Fri.[no entry]Mar. 21, Sat.[no entry]Mar. 22, Sun.Lovely day – like June at home. Sara read aloud from Isa. We sat on veranda. Folks singing at church. Sara's last day here. All so beautiful & quiet could almost hear the angels singing just over on the other shore.Mar. 23, Mon.Cl., Sara & Sally Jo got away by 6. Pretty lonely but I went to table for dinner & supper. A rainy, cold day – so dif. from yesterday. Mrs. Camp came with her darning. I darned some too but it was too dark to see well. Took hospital bed back & set up ours now I can get up alone.Mar. 24, Tues.Stanley came abt 4. Cl -7:30. Stanley goes on to Bunia tomorrow on biz. Several children at dorm have dysentery so it is good Sara is there to help. Cl. brot crackers from Vogel & things Sara got. So nice. Also is helping make doors etc. for the new part – to help Ray. Feel punk.Mar. 25, Wed.Mrs. Camp always brings me the news first thing. Queen Mary 84 died last night in her sleep (that's the way I'd like to go)! The Lord willing.Weisses came in ab't 4 from Matadi. I ate supper & went to bed – nausea is worse at night. Mary H. is abed too with bad back hurt in lifting.Mar. 26, Thur.Weisses staid over to do washing! I got several letters written for Rethy folk. Stanley came in & went on. Mr. Richardson & Joyce came on way to Biasiko. Gl. got safari lunches for all want to go on tomorrow early.Mar. 27, Fri.Gl. was up at 4:30 & had break by 5:30 & Richardsons got off buy Mrs. Weiss had to stop & see Dr. ab't her ear ache & he told them they better stay over another day! Richard has a sty on his eye too. Mary's back is still bad. Mrs. Camp came & we darned socks. Mrs. Becker called & brot pretty roses. Everyone is so kind.Mar. 28, Sat.Back is lame so am keeping quiet. Mended socks all day. Mr. Hanson-Young & Mr. Checkley from Kenya came from Rethy. They had taken Ray from Goli where Schuit met him & gotten his car, to Rethy. So had nice letters from all. Ray was out at Syabei for Kuyoni's ordination – so nice – Kuyoni wrote a note too.Mar. 29, Sun.Another pretty day – only Sara isn't here. Weisses to dinner & to Beckers for supper & Eng. here. W's expect to leave tomorrow via Andudu. Eng. men go to Rw. Feel very punk tonight – ankles quite swelled today.Mar. 30, Mon.Had to take sleeping powd. last eve so am sleepy today. W's left after breakfast via Andudu. Eng. men after lunch. I've felt much better today – but am beginning digitalis again just a bit. Mrs. Camp came & we darned socks. Feel much better. Cook came last night & starts work on the motor this morning.Mar. 31, Tues.Queen Mary buried today. Cl went to Beni & brot nice mail. Stanley came & brot the things we asked for – Richardsons came from Biasiko – Bells may come Sat. or Thur. Tummy pretty sick today. Writing the girls.Apr. 1, Wed.Stanley left ab't 10.Apr. 2, Thur.Bells came this P.M. So nice seeing them. Wrote Mother Sloop – she sent me $10. Mrs. Becker called. Gl. had pr mtg on the lawn with the women as usual. Paul Buyse came to get Miss Clapper's things at Bogoro.Apr. 3, Fri.Gl. said why not bring radio over – I said “For a mo.?” Then she said they have been talking it over – I may not go back to Rw & carry on – I should be where Dr. is & they will ask to stay on here - !!! Rather a shock.Apr. 4, Sat.Nina came & they all had much fun coloring eggs – the Walby children did too. Agnes sat with me for quite a while. I asked Dr. ab't what I could expect – he said never be left alone again – so,- the Lord guide.Apr. 5, Sun.EASTER Quite a nice day. Some sun. Quite a number called after native service. Mary sent jello & - Jewell choc. candy & card. Mary had sent chicken which we had roasted for dinner. Agnes was here & Paul Buyse.Apr. 6, Mon.Jim isn't back. Paul left this morn. Agnes here much of the day – so glad. Started letter to girls. Felt very ill at bed time – 6 P.M.Apr. 7, Tues.Every one writing letters. And now “Gold Coast friends” are married. Apr. 7 1956 and now I have pictures of 2 children.Apr. 8, Wed.Not much back ache this morning. Some sunshine today – Agnes came over some this A.M. Staid up after super. Lovely lot of letters but none from Co or Lo but from Al. & Lo had told her mails are queer.Apr. 9, Thur.Jim came back last night and today they & Mrs. Camp went to Butembo. Gl asked for potatoes & they brought em. They fixed my bed – how we hope no more back ache. Wrote a letter – mended – read – did cross word. Ag. brot lovely red cheese & tin of peaches.Apr. 10, Fri.Klines came tooling in ab't 11 – so nice to see them again. Carmel had to see Dr. ab't her nose & he thinks now its allergy to feathers or something. They brot lots of nice green vegs. They brot some mail – Coras & Loras letter – but only Lora had heard of my illness.Apr. 11, Sat.Agnes here for dinner & supper. I staid up til 8:30 reading. Jim came back but wanted no supper only bed. I have stockings on today & shoes. Feet don't swell much. Take digitalis like aralen twice a week. My mail did not come.Apr. 12, Sun.Dr. goes on his trip tomorrow. Cl goes to Rw - . Things have somewhat changed – if I'm OK by May 24 we may be allowed to go to Rw. after all. Cl talked with Jim ab't it – so we will see. Gl. cook got in trouble so had to be dismissed - & her bedroom wash boy is sick.Apr. 13, Mon.Cl & Klines got here ab't 5. Have had a rather uncomfortable day. Evelyns house came to supper – meat pie - & others came to cake & icecream. A jolly evening & I staid up til 9. Cl brot all eatables - & the organ back & the radio.Apr. 14, Tues.Paul Buyse came in just at suppertime – bringing a wire Jim had gone to Butembo this morning to get & was told nothing had come. Cl & Klines got away in good time – 6. I slept fine & have felt much better today. Not quite so much spitting.Apr. 15, Wed.Spose lessons finished today at Rethy. Haven't heard if Dr. returned or not. Sat around too much ankles are swollen. Hard storm ab't 5. Still spitting but not so bad. Paul left for Biasiko right after break. [breakfast]Apr. 16, Thur.Cl & Billy got here ab't 5, brot a young man tourist, Bill Howard, along. Several birthday presents which I'll not open til 20th – only Rays is money. I walked to & thro the church & back – at supper (Bells were here) Mrs. Camp came in dressed in a huge dress – she was funny. council decided Williams go to Ruwenzori!!!.Apr. 17, Fri.Dr. seems pleased with my progress & I'm getting stronger every day. Cl had to go with Dr. to see an official in Beni so he went on with him to Rw – also Bill Howard - & I hope will bring back a few things. They aren't here yet – 8:15. Agnes called some – it's so nice having her here.Apr. 18, Sat.Cl got aerial up but we haven't gotten anything very clear yet. I helped a bit in kitchen. All went early to Beni took picnic break. with them but couldn't get shots til 10, Uncle Jim misunderstood the boys. Mail brot slip for batteries but wish I c'd get them now as mine are giving out.Apr. 19, Sun.A lovely sunny day. Mr. Howard & I were here by ourselves all A.M. I c'd easily have spoken to him ab't his soul but I never thot of it til others came. He & Cl. go out to the pigmies to camp for a day or 2. Hope Cl. can help him. Then Cls sang Happy Birthday before prayers & all day cards & greetings kept coming. Cl. got away to camp & Andersons had lunch & went to Rw. Williams came in at dark & staid the night. Greens here for dinner – all well again. Just at dark 2 Austrians came on motor cycle & side car – touring Af. & whole world under auspices of World Council of Churches. Staying the night.Jul. 22, Wed.Austrians left and Drs. left too. Greens went to Rw. Late school. Children too tired to work well – went to bed so late last night. Dr. called for me to take cardiograph of my heart. Gl. took me in the car. Saw the picture but didn't mean much to me.Jul. 23, Thur.Bad head most all day. Mail came. Letter from Mrs Propst saying she & Teasdales might come up here next mo. Just hope not at the same time Rays & Guildings & Johnsons are here. The Lord will see to it. Greens here to supper. Worked at letters mostly.Jul. 24, Fri.Paul Buyses came in last eve & came here for supper. Greens leave tomorrow for Rethy so are taking letters & Mrs. Williams jam. Timmy was here this A.M. so school got mixed up.Jul. 25, Sat.Baked but brown bread not nice. Coffee cake alright and husbands cake is alright. The Florence family came ab't 5:30. Brot letters from Ray - & paper for school. Timmy not good tonight.Jul. 26, Sun.I had a quiet hour or more while children went to their service. Had a good sleep last night so feel better today. Mr. Florence spoke in our evening service & showed literature.Jul. 27, Mon.They left very promptly after 6:15 breakfast. I was up & ready to help but Gl. didn't need me. Williams came about 11:30 & he went on to Bogoro ab't 1. Mrs. W. went to Mary's class. 5 babies were born at Rw this last week. Mrs. Elia helps well.Jul. 28, Tues.Ray was on [radio] this morn - & said when he came yesterday he could get no one. Said Sara had a fine birthday. Cl. & Paul Buyse are going to Bunia tomorrow. And now I never wear it. [sweater she was working on this date a year ago]Jul. 29, Wed.Cl & Paul B. went to Bunia bule. [Kingwana for “worthless” or “for nothing”.] They were told there were bicycles there & a lot of fellows wanted some & they found them too expensive. Mr Williams came back too. Rained in the night last night & is at it again. I planted some garden. Will do more if rains stay on.Jul. 30, Thur.Williams left about 5. The Greek woman's baby died. Clapper came bringing a patient. Cl & Gl went to villages & Dr. wanted a box fixed for burying the baby so Cl. did it after we had supper. Clapper is staying with Evelyn tonight. More chicks hatched out.Jul. 31, Fri.Owen and Miss Cowell came in just before noon & Stoughs while we were eating. We expected them all. Now the Com. are meeting – and also there's a Conf. at Mbaus over the wk. end. My tummy is not good today again. Clapper rooms & eats at Beckers.Aug. 1, Sat.Such a disappointment when the parcel came because the main thing in it was lemon pow'd & it had burst open & was thro everything so we could hardly get things out. There's a bit of powd. left. Gl. is trying sherbet. All had dinner & supper here. Baked some but tummy not good.Aug. 2, Sun.Pretty miserable all day after an awful night of indigestion. Dr. came after church & sent other medicine – tastes like wormwood. Didn't stay up for service – but Dr. came in to see how I was. He does not go to Rethy this week.Aug. 3, Mon.Dr. called & said my heart is OK and I had a good rest. Slept all night and am feeling pretty good now. Not very nauseated. The wormwood medicine seems to help. We hope it will help the spitting too. All ate dinner here. Mr Stough went to Rw this P.M. The Com. hope to finish by tomorrow noon. Lovely baked fish but some not good.Aug. 4, Tues.Feeling much better. Evelyn asked us all there to supper but I begged off. Ray said John may come with some of the Kenya folks. Hope he does & that they bring him here. Language Com. has finished its work.Aug. 5, Wed.Owen & Cowell left early. Mr. Stough came back from Rw. before dinner. I finished back of Rays sweater & have almost finished the yellow one for baby Buyse. Cl. goes to out schools over week end.Aug. 6, Thur.Cl. left after breakfast and Mr. Selfridge came ab't 7. We had given up expecting him. Fortunately we had the boy fix up the guest house so it was ready. Gl & children ate at Evelyns.Aug. 7, Fri.Stoughs left after breakfast. Stomach is better this P.M. but was not good this morning tho I slept pretty well without a capsule. Buyses had supper here.Aug. 8, Sat.Ray got a telegram from John to say he would come to Kasenye on Sat. 15th – so Ray said they'd come to get him & then come on down here for the wk. end + a few days of the next week. Mr. Selfridge left after breakfast. My tummy has been so much better today.Aug. 9, Sun.Ray said they would go to Bogoro Fri. P.M. & get John Sat. & come on down as early as possible. Very strange Sun. Gl, children & I alone all day. Wrote some.Aug. 10, Mon.Not feeling up to much this P.M. Broth for supper & bed with the children. Perhaps malaria – perhaps??Aug. 11, Tues.Gl. sent a long message to Ray – and he OKed it - so Cl has not gone. Opened Lena's parcel & wrote her. Mr. Williams came last eve & left this A.M.Aug. 12, Wed.Billy said “Happy Birthday” to his Mother over the radio but by 8 P.M. he was here – came with Engelbrechts. They came in for coffee but not the night. Baby Buyse came this morning – named & all getting on well. Rays will try to get here in good time Sat.Aug. 13, Thur.Feeling pretty miserable all day & not sorry there was no school. Children had a good time playing. Tourists from Calif called. Killed 2 chickens. Because Ericksons are coming Ray thinks they should not.Aug. 14, Fri.A very uncomfortable day. Took only soup for meals. Gladys so busy all day. Mrs. Becker will make scalloped potatoes. Beans are ready for the oven. Chicken jelly is ready too. Ray said they'd go to Blukwa tonight & pick up John tomorrow & come on. Ericksons are at Bogoro we suppose & will be here tomorrow.Aug. 15, Sat.It's bed time & the party overwith and no Rays nor Ericksons yet. Where are they? I helpt with baking. We did squash pie & baked beans & buns and Mrs. Becker made scalloped potatoes & Evelyn baked a lovely big cake – and just here Rays come.Aug. 16, Sun.Cleared ab't noon so we had leftovers from last night on the lawn. Evelyn ate here & we had ham buns – baked beans – lovely cream cheese that Rays brot as sour milk – so nice & finished the cake. Eriksons are spending the wk. end at Bogoro. Rays could not drive to the pier as there was a wide river caused by cloud burst that Ray had to wade to get John from the boat.Aug. 17, Mon.Ray worked at car all A.M. Rained so couldn't go for picnic. I made loquat pie. Gl pickled some. Ray said at supper he had a very happy day working at car. Knitted some. Sara cut out 2 shirts for John.Aug. 18, Tues.Went to Tundugu [Tungudu] for lunch. A lovely day & a lovely time. Now they are all packed & said goodby for they leave at 4. Eriksons came & had dinner with Nina & went on to Katwa. Miss Coulton & Bromley had a break down ab't 40 kms. from here. Caught a ride & got here – are at Evelyns.Aug. 19, Wed.Rays got away before 5. Empty without them. Misses Coulton and Bromley were here to breakfast and then Cl. took them back to their car ab't 40 km. - and repaired it for them. They are having 2 wks. at the hotel at the caves. Nina brot her little girls – 13 of 'em to sing for me. Then they played on the lawn. Buyses here to supper.Aug. 20, Thur.Wrote letters mostly. Some one or some thing has done way with that nice hen Mrs. Harter gave us. I fear she was stolen as her eggs were, that were in the nest.Aug. 21, Fri.And today the folks came – Johnsons & Guildings. I'm so glad to see them. I have a go of fever and have taken 4 aralen so am not very peppy except to get to bed. Paul & Helen were here for dinner. Brot vegs - & flowers – so pretty.Aug. 22, Sat.Not good today – aralen effects my head & nausea. But very nice having the folks here. They brot such a lot of nice things too. Mrs. Guilding brot lovely wool for sweater – now I'll ask Sara if she wants me to make it for her. Helpt with baking.Aug. 23, Sun.Sunny and pleasant. All went to A.M. service. Quiet P.M. I had a long nap as I'm feeling effects of aralen, 8 are now finished – 2 more tomorrow night. Mrs. G. & I had a nice visit before mtg.Aug. 24, Mon.Miserable day. Dr. gave me other medicine & either it upset me or still the effects of aralenHad fish for supper and all enjoyed them. Buyses were here too. Looking over old Kodak pictures.
