Jan. 1, Thur.

And today Clo. [Claudon] left. ab't 2 P.M. and the de Wilde family called – had tea – Ray fixed my shoes – also some for Betty. What will this year bring to us all? It would be grand if the Lord should return – but may we be faithful should He tarry.

Jan. 2, Fri.

Helpt in kitchen. Paluku has bad throat so left after washing dishes – Boys did a big wash – didnt get dry – 2 European women killed in Nairobi – Gov't doesn't seem to be getting things under control very much.

Jan. 3, Sat.

Rainy all A.M. Boys got some clothes ironed but some didn't get dry. Paluku hasn't come to work so I helpt quite a bit – all here for supper on the lawn.

Jan. 4, Sun.

Fairly quiet day. Got some letters off. Had prayer for Conf. Klines had supper here. By next Sun. John [Stauffacher, Raymond's son] will be on his way to R.V.A. Ray & John take mohogo out to meet Cl in the morning.

Jan. 5, Mon.

Ray & John left by 4 & met Cl at the turn off – all went for a hunt & got a water buck which Ray took along with the mohogo to Oicha & brot the organ back – so we are beginning to move.

Jan. 6, Tues.

Stanley went to Beni brot quite a nice mail – but no parcels yet. A man was hurt by a leopard caught in a small trap – Ray, John & Stanley went to shoot it but it had the trap on its foot & had torn the rope & was loose growling in the thick bush – it got too dark & was too dangerous so came back.

Jan. 7, Wed.

Got away from Rw – by 10:15. Found Pinkertons here wanting to go with Rays so I'm staying over & will go with Cls. Bells are here & staying at Evelyns but had supper here. Dessert was ice cream soda!!

Jan. 8, Thur.

When we went to pr mtg the Misses M. Wilson, Rose Mary, Lutz, Waller & Weber in Zola's car were there – on way home from Kivu. Dr. & Jim went out to Rw. Birthday surprise pot luck supper on Eve – Lights went out but came on again just as we at the door began to sing. Had a nice time – Agnes gave me pretty dark blue dress.

Jan. 9, Fri.

3 ladies left this morning. Klines came & now we are all packed & ready for early start at 5. Claudons all go in the big truck which is loaded. They are taking their big refrig for Stams. They got a smaller one.

Jan. 10, Sat.

Rethy [annual General Conference]– All got away by 5:15, Clo in the big truck with a big load. Mrs Camp, Miss Edna & I with Bells. Others with Klines. We S's are in Trout house – John didn't go as they were late for the boat but there is another tomorrow that he takes – better connection. A good crowd here.

Jan. 11, Sun.

Ray & Cl took John to the boat early. Prayer mtg led by Jim & worship by Mr. Voller were so good & helpful, but as folks were going out some boys stirred up a swarm of bees near by & many folks were badly stung. Sir Arthur Smith especially. I had 15 or 20 mostly around ears & wrists. Boys apologized publicly.

Jan. 12, Mon.

Stings bothered in the night. I don't go to early prayers but all other mtgs. and all were so good. Ray is Conf. Chairman – C.P.C. discussion P.M. Lady Smith spoke to larger children on our lawn. Stunt night was really very good.

Jan. 13, Tues.

Went to T Pet. mtg – with children. Dr B led – it was very good. Then I came home with the children for Billy was in bed all day with bad throat. I did not go to big mtg this P.M. Miss Rowlee had larger children here. Am knitting a sock for M.A. to replace the one she lost.

Jan. 14, Wed.

All A.M. meetings so good. After dinner Cl. left in Dr's car taking Miss Edna to Oicha & Dr. is staying on. John is likely on train from Kisumu to Kijabe. Gl. had meeting on lawn & then games. I wrote at home letter.

Jan. 15, Thur.

To all meetings – except P.M. biz. Wrote some letters – all us children napped because of movies tonight. Expected to see “God of Creation” but some how it didn't come. Cl. came after we were up for the pictures. Ray at Council – Sara, M.A., Sally Jo & I came home at 8:45. Another picture was showing.

Jan. 16, Fri.

Right now it's raining – folks are not home from evening mtg. I staid with the children. Meetings today very good – sort of wind up – only biz tomorrow & music tomorrow night. Trying to arrange to get every body to Oicha & every car will be loaded to capacity.

Jan. 17, Sat.

[in pencil] Some one has borrowed my pen. Biz all A.M. I staid with children. Sally has fever – Gl. has bad cold – Betty broke her glasses. Expects new ones but is pretty helpless without. She, MA & I went to musical.

Jan. 18, Sun.

A grand finish to a fine week. Dedication of ab't a doz babies & then communion service – and praise mtg this eve. Gl is sick with a bad cold & Sara staid with Sally.

Jan. 19, Mon.

Oicha. Very hot & dusty – Klines went right on thro. We did shopping & then went in to Nyankundi & ate our lunch at Stevens - & called at Bill Deans. Gaunts came right behind us. Buyses & Littlejohns too.

Jan. 20, Tues.

Left Oicha after break. Stopt in Beni & got here in good time for dinner. Had baths & read at mail which Klines brot yesterday. My Hoopole parcel came. Gaunts & Betty Wilson came ab't 4. All bathed & settled – every one very tired. Inauguration day for Pres. Isenhower. Ray is sick with cold & malaria.

Jan. 21, Wed.

Picked strawberries – not many. Killed Klines pig. Wrote some letters. Boys did big wash. So hot & dry. We'd love a rain. R's cold is still pretty bad. All rest a lot – and eat well.

Jan. 22, Thur.

Just read a yr. ago to Miss Wilson. Cut up & canned the pig because Klines may put out the ice box so it wont stay good long these hot days. Yuda came. Koro goes tomorrow. Mas. next day. Ray had fever last night but better today.

Jan. 23, Fri.

Radio said M.A. is sick. No Reitsmas yet. Very cloudy and threatening. Am watering the flowers so perhaps it will rain. Yuda helpt today. Mas. baked white cake & mock fruit cake – also bread & buns. Finished Mary A's sock so now she has a pair.

Jan. 24, Sat.

Klines didn't leave til after 10. Dr. Reitzmas came while we were having picnic lunch at the river. They are settled in Miss Frost's [Prudence Elisabeth Frost] house. Yuda did very well today – together we baked squash pie & bread, buns & coffee cake. Supper on lawn. Music this eve.

Jan. 25, Sun.

Had a nice rain this eve. Fair crowd out to church. Ingles daughter came to borrow the microscope – to exam blood from cows as the vet. was coming. Man, wife & son were killed by Mau Mau – 60 mi. north of Nairobi.

Jan. 26, Mon.

Ray left in a hurry for Oicha. We could get no news this morning. All but Mrs. L. , Sara, Sally & I are going to the Lake [Lake Edward/Ishango] in the morning. All packed & ready. Sally got stung by a wasp – had hi temp at supper time but better now.

Jan. 27, Tues.

Reitsmas left for Oicha right after breakfast as he had a bad night. Littlejohns didn't go to the Lake either. Gaunts & Wilson did & had a nice time. Klines came just at noon – brot very little mail. Helen H. may come with Ray tomorrow & go with Stanley on Fri.

Jan. 28, Wed.

Ray came before dinner & brot Helen. I made do-nuts for dinner. Helen sleeps at Klines & may have breakfast there as we will eat early – as Rays want to be off for Andudu. Lots of fun playing “Muggins”.

Jan. 29, Thur.

Rays & Littlejohns left ab't 7:40. Spose they are at Andudu tonight. Helen is here. We hope Paul will come on Sat. Had supper on lawn. Made jello with fruit Helen brot. Finished Billy's socks & have begun Betty's yellow ones.

Jan. 30, Fri.

Stanley & Helen left ab't 9. Bot a lot of green peas which I'll can tomorrow. Baked cottage pud & had Strawberries over it. Had a bad wind storm for ab't ½ hr. Lots of grass blew off the roofs. No rain tho. Washed goi today & it dried.

Jan. 31, Sat.

Not much baking to do. Berry pie of canned berries. Pauls came ab't 5 – brot Lubero flour. Stanley wrote Carmel that it's Pauls anniversary tomorrow so Carmel is baking a cake in the morning & will make more ice cream.

Feb. 1, Sun.

Paul spoke at A.M. service and read a Keswick address this eve. This is their 29^th anniversary. The cake was very pretty. Sandwiches of Spam – jelly – apricots & ice cream. A very nice time.

Feb. 2, Mon.

I persuaded Pauls to stay today so we have had some good visit. Carmel had supper here. They did some washing & ironing – so were busy. Gaunts & Miss Wilson left by 8. Want to stay at Bogoro tonight.

Feb. 3, Tues.

Hurlburts left by 7:15 and Stanley came ab't 3. brot nice mail but no parcel. Kornelio is back too as are most all who went. MacIntoshes may come on Fri & Mas comes with them. $25. from Dr. Dix & 25 from Stacy. Thank God.

Feb. 4, Wed.

Wrote at letters. Got nurses house cleaned & beds made. These beds are ready too. Mrs K. offers to sleep here but I'm alright. I sleep well. Macs may come on Fri.

Feb. 5, Thur.

Cleaned living room. Suddenly remembered Jorgensens might come tomorrow. Dr. came ab't 4 – had supper & was off by 6:15. Wants to go to Biasiko tomorrow. De Wildes & Mrs. Van Haan came to see Dr & had coffee here (with warm water).

Feb. 6, Fri.

Got corner room ready at Esther's for Jorgensens, but no one came. Got vegetable seed list ready to post. Carmel came & waited for 8 oclock news. Boys cleaned windows.

Feb. 7, Sat.

Macs came ab't 3 P.M. but no Jorgensens yet. Wonder what is keeping them. Supper on the lawn – spaghetti & sausage. Yuda did very well with baking bread. It's lovely. I made pie & cake.

Feb. 8, Sun. A large crowd at church. Communion service was well attended. Mr. Mac preached. In P.M. had testimonies from those who attended conf. All were full of praise for what God had done – 30 or more backsliders reclaimed & several conversions.

Feb. 9, Mon.

Nareu returned with mail – only went this morning. Jorgensens will come the 16^th. Now when will Reitsmas come? Letter from Co. She is sending another parcel – old quilt etc. Masikini is back on the job – pd Yuda. Got some letters written.

Feb. 10, Tues.

We baked cookies for Rethy children. Wrote some but knitted mostly. Think I can get them done so Macs can take them to Betty. They are yellow nylon – then I'll go at Johns next – Klines here til 9.

Feb. 11, Wed.

Baked date & heart cookies for Rethy. Radio said Dr. Reitsmas come tomorrow. Mass didn't go up to the pt as Kule didn't know he was to come. Finished Betty's socks.

Feb. 12, Thur.

Rained a bit over noon. Reitsmas came about 1. They say Cls are staying another wk at Bogoro. I'm sure Gl. can do with more rest. Got a few letters off.

Feb. 13, Fri. (Friday 13^th)

Esther left after dinner. Macs left after break. Radio said Cls got back last eve. Canned 4 qts. dills & 3 qts crout, Mrs. Reitsma will can some tomatoes tomorrow. Macs took cookies & candy for the children at Rethy. 6 Kikuyu shot dead, some wounded & some captured near Thompson Falls. Earthquake in North Persia 1500 killed.

Feb. 14, Sat.

Klines went to Beni & got yellow fever inoc. Marj Mar left a note at Kircof [Kirchoff, Greek grocery in Beni] to say they were held up at the pontoon til 4 P.M. it was being moved, but she got the official's signature so hope that Cairo letter is mailed. A letter from M.E.W. folks – 5 want to come – either today or by Tues. No one came yet.

Feb. 15, Sun.

Stanley went to out schools. Mr & Mrs. Dewey – tourists – came in time for S.S. & staid to church too. They seemed very nice – took pictures. She was very touched during service – she wept. It is so warm today really hot tonight. O for some rain.

Feb. 16, Mon.

Mail brot notice of 3 parcels also 3 for Klines – now, how to get them? 'Twas so warm last night no one rested well. More Kikuyu killed & arrested and they also killed a teacher & beat up a pastor & 2 women. Awful!

Feb. 17, Tues.

Reitsmas took chest of drawers, the buffet, rocking chair & Klines 2 Jr beds & the baby pen Widmans left. So they have a huge load. I have some letters ready to post. No Jorgensens yet so perhaps they can get the parcels.

Feb. 18, Wed.

Reitsmas got away right after breakf and by 3 P.M. Jorgensens were here. They think they saw their truck on the Beni side of the Semliki for boys say Rs had car trouble when they got down the hill. So, tho I sent money & customs slips I don't know now when I'll get the parcels. Letter from Co saying they have 750. for mo.

Feb. 19, Thur.

Cool & cloudy most all day – but no rain. No M.E.U. guests yet. Men from Costers called trying to sell sprayer & solution for trees of all sorts.

Feb. 20, Fri.

Cooler all day – rained a bit east. Carmel & I listed things that I want of Miss Nowecks. It all comes to ab't $55. Getting a few letters off. Forgot to get the Nairobi news for 2 nights. Have John's sock well started now but had a time with it.

Feb. 21, Sat.

Usual work. Just at dark a car came – 5 Greeks, Indians, mulatto??? “Just to see” but what they could see after dark I don't know. They came in & talked – then left. Cloudy most all day. Jorgensens wanted to go to hotel to see Mt. Too cloudy.

Feb. 22, Sun.

Quiet day. Stanley preached – dinner late! but good. Wrote at letters. After eve service played Mrs. J's records and talked.

Feb. 23, Mon.

We went to de Wildes & got permit for Lake & to hotel for pictures. Now lunch is packed and letters etc ready for Gl. & the post. Will I really have the parcels tomorrow night.

Feb. 24, Tues.

The folks went to the Lake but it rained so much down there that they came back early. Stanley went to Oicha and Beni. Brot the 3 parcels - & we unpacked them – such a lot of nice things. They were sent Sept. 5, Oct. 21, Nov. 7.

Feb. 25, Wed.

Men dug up ½ the front lawn ready to sweep it clean & replant. But at noon it started to rain & kept up all P.M. - Wonder if they are really beginning. I'll soon get some seed put in. Uncle Dicks letter had seed of ruby gold tomato.

Feb. 26, Thur.

Another strip of lawn hoed over and another rainy P.M. Are the rains really here? Writing at letters – and getting things packed away for Rethy & Oicha. Waffle supper for all. Fire in grate. Seems so cold.

Feb. 27, Fri.

Jorgensens left ab't 2 – are no doubt at Oicha. Want to leave early in the morning. A little sprinkle at dark. K's didn't come for the news. Mass. baked buns & bread for them.

Feb. 28, Sat.

Not much to do but busy all day. Koronelio is sick so had his work to do. He has filaria & is taking treatments. Mas. baked a pie - & that was all. Ks here to supper.

Mar. 1, Sun.

Had dinner at Klines. Got another letter or two off. Read some – talked after service 7 letters went in the bag.

Mar. 2, Mon.

I had given up looking for Mc Dowells – then they came about 7:45. So they are settled. A Mr. Persifal & new bride called – on honey moon from Machakos. They say the Mau Mau situation is bad but not so bad as Pauline G. writes.

Mar. 3, Tues.

Wrote some – mended some. Mail came. Nice letters – one from Esther to say she is engaged!! One from Ray saying Sara is real miserable with her back & leg. Hope Dr. K who was soon coming was able to help her. John is happy at R.V.A.

Mar. 4, Wed.

Tourists came up & we had [lunch?] at Ks. The 2 M.E.U. young men Carlson & Egstrom came just after our lunch. Have been feeling punk all day so will give up my supper then go to bed. The young men are in the guest room. The other 3 are ill – couldn't come.

Mar. 5, Thur.

Written in Apr. - Oicha. My daily records stopt here as, Dr. came over with stretcher in car & brot me here those 50 awful miles. Dr. said it was dysentery (bassilary) [bacillary] & malaria.

I asked Mr. Carlson to call Carmel ab't 2 A.M. when I couldn't stop vomitting - & Stanley left ab't 4 for Oicha to get in touch with Dr. who was still at Rethy but coming out that day. Dr. said to give aralen & wait his coming. Gl. came back with Stanley. My bowels were very loose – had to get up ab't every 20 min – also to vomit. Dr. came ab't 4. They had supper & then 'twas 7 or later when we got started back got here 10. I was terribly tired & soon went to sleep.

Dr. came early & left tablets etc a bit later my heart acted up – the pain ws enuf. to make me sweat. They came & soon had it stopt. This was Fri. the 6^th.

That day the dysentery was bad up 18 – 20 times with some vomiting tho not so severe. Sun. morn Dr. radioed for Rays to come if they could. Sara was alone. Ray 40 mi in the bush. She sent a bicycler & by 3 P.M. they were ready to start. They came via Andudu & got here by 4 A.M. Twas so good to see them.

They brot a hosp. bed – raised head – etc - & Sara took over – so Mary didn't have to come. Every one has been so good. I'm so thankful Rays are here. I wont have been so glad to go, tho – the nausea has been very annoying – all the time. The heart condition seems OK. & the dysentery cleared in a day.

Raymond left on Sat. the 14^th for Rethy & on Mon. went with others to I.F.D mtg at Kijabe.

Lovely day – like June at home. Sara read aloud from Isa. We sat on veranda. Folks singing at church. Sara's last day here. All so beautiful & quiet could almost hear the angels singing just over on the other shore.

Mar. 23, Mon.

Cl., Sara & Sally Jo got away by 6. Pretty lonely but I went to table for dinner & supper. A rainy, cold day – so dif. from yesterday. Mrs. Camp came with her darning. I darned some too but it was too dark to see well. Took hospital bed back & set up ours now I can get up alone.

Mar. 24, Tues.

Stanley came abt 4. Cl -7:30. Stanley goes on to Bunia tomorrow on biz. Several children at dorm have dysentery so it is good Sara is there to help. Cl. brot crackers from Vogel & things Sara got. So nice. Also is helping make doors etc. for the new part – to help Ray. Feel punk.

Mar. 25, Wed.

Mrs. Camp always brings me the news first thing. Queen Mary 84 died last night in her sleep (that's the way I'd like to go)! The Lord willing.

Weisses came in ab't 4 from Matadi. I ate supper & went to bed – nausea is worse at night. Mary H. is abed too with bad back hurt in lifting.

Mar. 26, Thur.

Weisses staid over to do washing! I got several letters written for Rethy folk. Stanley came in & went on. Mr. Richardson & Joyce came on way to Biasiko. Gl. got safari lunches for all want to go on tomorrow early.

Mar. 27, Fri.

Gl. was up at 4:30 & had break by 5:30 & Richardsons got off buy Mrs. Weiss had to stop & see Dr. ab't her ear ache & he told them they better stay over another day! Richard has a sty on his eye too. Mary's back is still bad. Mrs. Camp came & we darned socks. Mrs. Becker called & brot pretty roses. Everyone is so kind.

Mar. 28, Sat.

Back is lame so am keeping quiet. Mended socks all day. Mr. Hanson-Young & Mr. Checkley from Kenya came from Rethy. They had taken Ray from Goli where Schuit met him & gotten his car, to Rethy. So had nice letters from all. Ray was out at Syabei for Kuyoni's ordination – so nice – Kuyoni wrote a note too.

Mar. 29, Sun.

Another pretty day – only Sara isn't here. Weisses to dinner & to Beckers for supper & Eng. here. W's expect to leave tomorrow via Andudu. Eng. men go to Rw. Feel very punk tonight – ankles quite swelled today.

Mar. 30, Mon.

Had to take sleeping powd. last eve so am sleepy today. W's left after breakfast via Andudu. Eng. men after lunch. I've felt much better today – but am beginning digitalis again just a bit. Mrs. Camp came & we darned socks. Feel much better. Cook came last night & starts work on the motor this morning.

Mar. 31, Tues.

Queen Mary buried today. Cl went to Beni & brot nice mail. Stanley came & brot the things we asked for – Richardsons came from Biasiko – Bells may come Sat. or Thur. Tummy pretty sick today. Writing the girls.

Stanley left ab't 10.

Apr. 2, Thur.

Bells came this P.M. So nice seeing them. Wrote Mother Sloop – she sent me $10. Mrs. Becker called. Gl. had pr mtg on the lawn with the women as usual. Paul Buyse came to get Miss Clapper's things at Bogoro.

Apr. 3, Fri.

Gl. said why not bring radio over – I said “For a mo.?” Then she said they have been talking it over – I may not go back to Rw & carry on – I should be where Dr. is & they will ask to stay on here - !!! Rather a shock.

Apr. 4, Sat.

Nina came & they all had much fun coloring eggs – the Walby children did too. Agnes sat with me for quite a while. I asked Dr. ab't what I could expect – he said never be left alone again – so,- the Lord guide.

Apr. 5, Sun.

EASTER Quite a nice day. Some sun. Quite a number called after native service. Mary sent jello & - Jewell choc. candy & card. Mary had sent chicken which we had roasted for dinner. Agnes was here & Paul Buyse.

Apr. 6, Mon.

Jim isn't back. Paul left this morn. Agnes here much of the day – so glad. Started letter to girls. Felt very ill at bed time – 6 P.M.

Apr. 7, Tues.

Every one writing letters. And now “Gold Coast friends” are married. Apr. 7 1956 and now I have pictures of 2 children.

Apr. 8, Wed.

Not much back ache this morning. Some sunshine today – Agnes came over some this A.M. Staid up after super. Lovely lot of letters but none from Co or Lo but from Al. & Lo had told her mails are queer.

Apr. 9, Thur.

Jim came back last night and today they & Mrs. Camp went to Butembo. Gl asked for potatoes & they brought em. They fixed my bed – how we hope no more back ache. Wrote a letter – mended – read – did cross word. Ag. brot lovely red cheese & tin of peaches.

Apr. 10, Fri.

Klines came tooling in ab't 11 – so nice to see them again. Carmel had to see Dr. ab't her nose & he thinks now its allergy to feathers or something. They brot lots of nice green vegs. They brot some mail – Coras & Loras letter – but only Lora had heard of my illness.

Apr. 11, Sat.

Agnes here for dinner & supper. I staid up til 8:30 reading. Jim came back but wanted no supper only bed. I have stockings on today & shoes. Feet don't swell much. Take digitalis like aralen twice a week. My mail did not come.

Apr. 12, Sun.

Dr. goes on his trip tomorrow. Cl goes to Rw - . Things have somewhat changed – if I'm OK by May 24 we may be allowed to go to Rw. after all. Cl talked with Jim ab't it – so we will see. Gl. cook got in trouble so had to be dismissed - & her bedroom wash boy is sick.

Apr. 13, Mon.

Cl & Klines got here ab't 5. Have had a rather uncomfortable day. Evelyns house came to supper – meat pie - & others came to cake & icecream. A jolly evening & I staid up til 9. Cl brot all eatables - & the organ back & the radio.

Apr. 14, Tues.

Paul Buyse came in just at suppertime – bringing a wire Jim had gone to Butembo this morning to get & was told nothing had come. Cl & Klines got away in good time – 6. I slept fine & have felt much better today. Not quite so much spitting.

Apr. 15, Wed.

Spose lessons finished today at Rethy. Haven't heard if Dr. returned or not. Sat around too much ankles are swollen. Hard storm ab't 5. Still spitting but not so bad. Paul left for Biasiko right after break. [breakfast]

Apr. 16, Thur.

Cl & Billy got here ab't 5, brot a young man tourist, Bill Howard, along. Several birthday presents which I'll not open til 20^th – only Rays is money. I walked to & thro the church & back – at supper (Bells were here) Mrs. Camp came in dressed in a huge dress – she was funny. council decided Williams go to Ruwenzori!!!.

Apr. 17, Fri.

Dr. seems pleased with my progress & I'm getting stronger every day. Cl had to go with Dr. to see an official in Beni so he went on with him to Rw – also Bill Howard - & I hope will bring back a few things. They aren't here yet – 8:15. Agnes called some – it's so nice having her here.

Apr. 18, Sat.

Cl got aerial up but we haven't gotten anything very clear yet. I helped a bit in kitchen. All went early to Beni took picnic break. with them but couldn't get shots til 10, Uncle Jim misunderstood the boys. Mail brot slip for batteries but wish I c'd get them now as mine are giving out.

A lovely sunny day. Mr. Howard & I were here by ourselves all A.M. I c'd easily have spoken to him ab't his soul but I never thot of it til others came. He & Cl. go out to the pigmies to camp for a day or 2. Hope Cl. can help him. Mtg here & pictures of Switz by Rowlee afterward.

Apr. 20, Mon. [FMS birthday]

It began by Ray sending greetings over radio & also the others. Then Cls sang Happy Birthday before prayers & all day cards & greetings kept coming. Cl. got away to camp & Andersons had lunch & went to Rw. Williams came in at dark & staid the night. All the station came for jello & cake & coffee. Not Nina – she's sick – nor Dr. too busy. Had very nice time.

Apr. 21, Tues.

Cl etc came in ab't 4. Had had a nice time. Williams left after lunch. Nairobi news is not good. Another European shot by MM. Baked peanut cookies for next safari. Feeling pretty punk all day - & really sick & glad to go to bed.

Apr. 22, Wed.

Cl & Bill H. went up Irumu way for meat. Walbys here for supper & we sorted stamps afterward. Gl. spent much time trying to show the laundry boy how to dampen & iron clothes. I've felt better today – tho still spit. Its so nice to hear Ray on radio even if I cant talk back.

Apr. 23, Thur.

Williams came & brot things – the big record cab. that I didn't want at all – but Gl's little cab. my desk came thro fine. They went on after lunch. Then the 4 ladies came. They had had no lunch. Miss Love was here ready to take Saltenberger & friend on to Nyankundi.

Apr. 24, Fri.

Have had a miserable day with more nausea than usual. Dr. didn't come – Miss Edna did. Nina is still abed and Mary not well either. No hunters yet either.

Apr. 25, Sat.

No hunters back yet. Mary wanted to go Beni & Dr. said Gl should drive his car - & I sh'd go along for the ride. We went when we got back mail was here – also Dr. Stevens & Pollocks down at Beckers. Mrs. Pollock not well. All but Kathy & Chas had supper at Beckers. My! I'm tired as I had no sleep before going to Beni.

Apr. 26, Sun.

Cl etc got in ab't mid night – tree down & flat. Brot a Greek from N.Y. along. He drew pictures for the children – cartoonist. All but Beckers here to dinner. I didn't sleep well so feel awful. Bill had a very narrow escape from wounded buffalo. He seemed glad to accept the little Testament I offered him. Nice mtg this eve. Gr. thanked Gl. afterward.

Expected Williams but they didn't come. Sara was on radio this morning. Felt pretty good til this P.M. by supper time ws real sick – but am better since supper. The Greek drew some pictures for Gl's form letter.

Apr. 28, Tues.

Bill etc went out to the main road to catch a ride to Beni to arrange to go further on their dif. ways. Dr changed medicine. Not feeling so good. to bed early. W's came.

Bill etc left for good. He's a nice chap. Mr W. got back after dark. Brot strawberries.

Apr. 30, Thur.

Spent all day in bed. Trying new med. Williams left with all the chickens & rabbits.

May 1, Fri.

Lovely sunny day but I staid lying down til 3 P.M. I do wish it would all stop. I'm so nauseated.

Girls came from Biasiko. Had staid at Butembo over night – broken spring. Williams stopt in on way to Nyankunde – then tomorrow Bogoro.

May 2, Sat.

Was up all day no good for anything. Worked mags some cutting out recipes, but got only 2 done. Finished the liquid med. Ate a bit of liver for break. That didn't set well. Nice mail. Letter from Co to say they are sending me some money for Dr. bills etc. Bless her. Beth is landing the 12^th. Al has been sick too – worked hard moving & took cold – fainted but still insists on staying alone.

May 3, Sun.

Ate at the table all day. Billy staid with me this morning. I wrote Mildred Olson. Quite a dif Sun. from last Sun. Have been alone all day. Wonder where Bill H. is today. Nausea doesn't seem so bad today. Had nice walk with Gl. Cl took children around the block. Mtg here.

May 4, Mon.

Cloudy most all day. Teachers met here on veranda – hard rain storm came so they sat here for quite a while waiting for it to stop. Ab't 7 Alice Wentworth came bringing Chas Trout family. They got stuck in mud. Alice & Miss Barth are at Beckers. Chas came a bit later & Marion. All were mud from head to foot. Gl. gave them hot soup supper & they left by 9.

May 5, Tues.

The Downeys (Earl) came in ab't 10 A.M. They had slept at the hotel in Beni. I walked to Beckers with Gl. & back – plenty tired. Dr. gave me a big shot of digitalis – enuf for 2 days. So my tummy should soon be better. Folks all going to Katwa tomorrow. Made lunches here.

May 6, Wed.

Folks got off a bit after 6. Mrs. Camp came & staid all day. Downeys left before lunch. Dr. called & said I did too much yesterday & I may not go to Rw. Ray said they wanted to come this wk end but wouldn't if we were going to Rw. & they can't next wk end. So we hope they'll come Sat. for only Cl & Billy will go to Rw.

May 7, Thur.

Cl. was out with Official fixing boundery of forest for cutting trees. Gl. had beds changed today. Dr. gave me another shot this morning – he goes to Biasiko early. Went to Rw. this P.M. & now there's a party for Alice. Faith is a cute bride & Dick groom & Billy carries the cake. I'm alone.

May 8, Fri.

Haven't felt very well – but better this eve. Alice & Miss barth called this A.M. Gl. helped wash my hair. Andersons wrote they'd come tomorrow P.M. & Rays too will be – we hope. Cl. goes alone to Rw as Billy wants to see Lowrie & John.

May 9, Sat.

They came in ab't 3:30 & Andersons right afterward so Cl. waited for them & Jno, Lowrie & Billy went with him. They'll return tomorrow P.M. Paul Buyse also came, but Mrs. Becker took care of him. I'm very tired – but so happy.

May 10, Sun.

Feel so much better. They told me it is Mother's Day & gave me a shell pin & some good eats. Ray played & all sang “Great is thy faithfulness”. It is so true my heart is full of praise. Cl. & boys got in ab't 6. With 4 natives besides the big load of stuff. Break. & lunches all ready for the road at 4:30 tomorrow.

May 11, Mon.

I felt better last eve & enjoyed the service here so much – but today isn't so good. They got away early – Mary A. is staying til next week when they go up. Am getting settled – can't do much at a time. Mary A is in my room too, the corner one. Don't feel so good.

May 12, Tues.

A beautiful day. Cl. out in forest again. Ludwigs came to see Dr. & called here. M.A. went home with them & will come back with Cls tomorrow. Mary H. is going too. Jim & Ag. came & Mrs. Camp asked me to go there for dinner tomorrow. Hope my spitting lets up some. Doesn't seem quite so bad today.

May 13, Wed.

They took picnic lunch & left by 11:30.Mary did not go – sick. I ate dinner with Camps & Bells. Cough troubles so Jewell gave me an intravenous - & pills. They got back by 8. Did shopping for several. Mail didn't come – day has changed to Fri!! Sick all day – glad to go to bed.

May 14, Thur.

But such a night – coughed much & slept little. Jewell gave me a needle which didn't stop hurting for 4 hrs & we put hot clothes on. Dr. also gave liquid med – bah! Bells & Paul B. here to supper. I didn't go to table. Williams came in ab't 9.

May 15, Fri.

Quite an uncomfortable day. Got a shot in my left arm which wasn't supposed to hurt like yesterdays but it did -Took asperin. Dr. wanted to give another at bed time but has left it til morning. Bells are bringing the other kind from Bunia. Mail came. Wedding cake from Esther M. $10 from Effie Graham.

May 16, Sat.

Dr. put digitalis into vein so no pain. M.A. & I unpacked one box of towels, materials etc. Bells went to Bunia & are to bring more digitalis. Had weiner roast here for all as M.A.'s & Billy's farewell. Gl. invited folks but Billy informed them it was his birthday party so some brot gifts!

May 17, Sun.

Quite a miserable day with much nausea & a painful needle. M.A., Billy, Faith & Dick all dressed pretty & clean went to Mrs. Beckers for dinner & had a wonderful time. Paul B. here to dinner & Bells & he to supper. Mtg as usual. Do enjoy the singing & reading from F. B. Myers “Abraham”. A strange lady came with Jewell. Vomitted 2 times P.M.

May 18, Mon.

More comfy today but still very nauseated. Changed pills. These should help digestion. He put needle in left arm which was much better. Wrote some & helped Gl. with mending etc. Getting things together for Rethy.

May 19, Tues.

Finishing up marking, and packing for Billy. Stomach seems better today but still lots of spitting. Folks from Calif. called after dinner. I slept. Nina wants to go witth Cl. and so much stuff to see ab't & to bring back. Too bad Gl. isnt going so as to help.

May 20, Wed.

Cl. with Billy & Mary Ann got away about 6:15. I was quite comfy til near noon and we all slept & felt pretty good til 4 P.M. & have been very nauseated since. Ate a bit of milk toast. Williams came in at supper time. Dr. called as he wants to go to Blukwa tomorrow.

May 21, Thur.

Wonder how Uncle Richard spent the day. Radio said Cl & all others got there OK. Dr. went to Blukwa. I was so miserable last eve when I went to bed & didn't rest very well. Have been better today. Jewell took my heart count. Williams spend wk. end here – breakfast here – dinner Beckers, supper at Ninas.

May 22, Fri.

Felt better today than for a long time – food had some taste. Had baked fish & it was good. Dr. got back this P.M. a native baby case was waiting for him – so haven't seen him. Made bread & butter pickles from Rw cucs. Pressuring 3 qts peas from Katwa – Hurlburt sent.

May 23, Sat.

Helped a bit in kitchen. Dr gave me a needle. Big mail came. My parcel from Cora posted Jan 21, 1952! Some things in bottles & tins are OK. Dick is down with malaria. Ab't 7 Dr. Bob Stevens came & Miss Frost's nephew from N. Rhodesia. They are in the large guest house.

May 24, Sun.

The Drs. decided to go to Rw. this P.M. & sleep there and then go to the Lake tomorrow & back there to sleep & then here on Tues. So we are alone again. Williams leave tomorrow. Dicky is getting better.

May 25, Mon.

Williams left this morning taking Mrs. Becker & Nina to Bunia for shopping. Spending the night at Bogoro. I did enjoy my breakfast. Not the other meals tho. Started the second sock. Helped with chickens so got exercise. Dr. took needle tray so will try capsules again. Dick not well.

May 26, Tues.

When Dr. came this morn. he said Dick has measles. I was making a rhubarb pie for we expected the folks back from Rw. but Dr. said they must eat there so we sent the meat & pie down. They ate there but have been here all P.M. Gl. got supper for them. It's after 7 & they have gone to greet Mrs. Becker who just came back from shopping in Bunia. They are going home yet tonight.

May 27, Wed.

Ray said Billy is down with measles. Dick is very miserable – coughs so much – mouth & throat sore. Wants only jello. Thank God we have it. I took both digitalis & aralen & was very sick til bedtime – no supper. Bells came & brot lovely flowers from Helen H.

May 28, Thur.

Didn't take any digitalis today – but my tummy isn't entirely good even so. Nausea near meal time. Dicky has slept most all day for he coughed so much last night. I ironed some. Got two nice big fish. Pierces came she is having a tooth taken out. Ray said Billy is ab't OK again.

May 29, Fri.

Bed time & no Cl. yet. Perhaps he went to Rethy after all. Our lovely fish we got yesterday have all gone bad. We had some fried for dinner seemed ok. The baked one for supper is spoiled. Ray said Billy was feeling frisky. Took digitalis after supper.

May 30, Sat.

Cl. came in ab't 11 last eve – brot a Uganda cob. I told the boys God gave us meat because the fish were bad. Bells & Clapper here to supper. Took digitalis again after supper because that last night seemed to set alright. Uhlingers are to go to Rw. L. Buyses to Rethy.

May 31, Sun.

Bells here to dinner & Clapper to supper. Had bit of farewell for them after evening service – ice cream & cake & Koolaid. Drs. couldn't come for he had to go out toward Irumu & bring in Mrs. Dix & Carrell – their car broke down. They are on the way to Kamp. taking Carrell! Mr. Dix is in Paulis repairing the car.

Dr. left for his trip to Rethy etc. Bells left for Bunia & Irumu from where they fly tomorrow. Expected Williams in this eve but so far haven't come here. Am helping Gladys address her general letter. The Meru & Embu tribes are joining the Mau Mau. Some have been killed & captured.

Jun. 2, Tues.

Coronation Day for Queen Elizabeth II and we spent much time listening to the doings – likely the most elaborate ever carried out. A New Zealander got up Mt Everest reported this eve. Quite a rainy day in London, but the program was carried out & plenty of cheering. My tummy is better than ever since Mar. 4.

Jun. 3, Wed.

Bells should be at Brussells and Margaret at Biasiko & Williams at Rw. tonight. It's good to know wherever they are they are in God's hands. Mrs. Becker brot some lovely oranges from Mrs. Dix. Have heard nothing ab't him. Faith not so much fever but Dick has dysentery. Lora's parcel came – lots of nice things in it.

Jun. 4, Thur.

Baked mango pie. Just as we finished lunch L. Buyses drove in. They had had theirs but had a piece of pie & cup of coffee. Today we got nice talapia fish & had some for supper. Radio news is not good. Russia threatens U.S.A. Plenty of Communists in U.S.A. to help. Dr. is not back from Rethy yet. Faith is coming down with measles.

Jun. 5, Fri.

The baked fish was so good & I don't know if I ate too much or if it is the digitalis I took at dinner but my tummy has been bad this P.M. so I ate a few spns of soup & no more. Faith is starting with rash. Dr. went to Rw. this P.M. Some one sent us some very nice red rhubarb for pie tomorrow.

Jun. 6, Sat.

Baked 2 rhubarb pies. Then I was tired. Mr. Dix & Miss Shauer came in late also Miss Rowlee. Mr. Dix brot us jello – 10 pkts & ab't 18 envelopes of soup from Grace Lindholm – all so acceptable – especially the jello. Faith is quite miserable.

Jun. 7, Sun.

Faith's face is scarlet & her eyes so sore – she coughs more too. Gladys didn't get to any mtgs. The cook is sick so we had to do most of the cooking. The chicken etc was very good. Miss Rowlee called. All came to mtg – also Mr. Dix.

Jun. 8, Mon.

Cl. went with Mr. Dix to Kampala. He wanted him to. Gl. made a batch of do nuts & sent to Mrs. Becker. I gave her a kerchief & Dick gave her a pad & pencil & Faith gave her Spredon & a paper of pins. She wrote an appreciative note. Fish truck came. It's such a treat to have 'em. Felt chilly so took a blood slide found malaria so am taking 2 aralen.

Jun. 9, Tues.

Felt very punk all A.M. Didn't help Gl. hardly at all. Better this eve. Guess it was the aralen. Helped fold letters for Gl. Mr. Senff called. He goes out to Rw. tomorrow & down to the Lake – for getting animal pictures.

Jun. 10, Wed.

Mr. Dix and Claudon not back yet. Am at the blue foot of Johns sock. Mrs. Dix, Jewell & Miss Schauer here to supper. Cold & cloudy all day – had fire in grate all day.

Jun. 11, Thur.

They came ab't 11. Had slept in the car at Katwe. They didn't accomplish much – tho there may be a chance in Nairobi & Dr. & Miss Schauer go to Rethy early tomorrow. Miss S. is so thin but says she is better.

Jun. 12, Fri.

Mrs. Camp got a telegram today from Earl & they are at Kihindu – so he may be up here any day for her – so we want to have a supper tomorrow night. Mail came from Beni – I got several home surface letters. This has been my best day since I'm sick – less nausea.

Jun. 13, Sat.

Had station here to cafateria pot luck supper. Jewell baked buns – Mrs Becker pot. salad Mary deviled eggs. We had ham. This was sort of a goodby for Mrs. Camp, tho we do not know when she is going. Not so good this P.M. but better this eve. I baked pie crusts. Gladys filled em with lemon – good.

All services as usual. Gl took children to their meeting. Alone for dinner but Dixes & Senff here to supper. Rained pretty hard but every one came to mtg any way even Mrs. Becker. I've felt fairly comfy all day compared to a wk. ago.

Jun. 15, Mon.

Mr. Senff left for Bogoro to see if Drs medicines are there. If not he goes on to Blukwa tomorrow. Pretty good today but have to keep drinking hot water. Set a hen today with some ours & some Marys eggs. Finished the socks - & pressed them. Will send them to Rethy. Fish came today.

Jun. 16, Tues.

Buyses came ab't 4 P.M. Am sending socks & letters to Ray as they expect to go to Rethy this week. Radio says gov't has deported the man who was lawyer for Mau Mau – certainly a right move. Communist evidently.

Jun. 17, Wed.

No guests yet so Cl & I will go to Beni tomorrow. Guess Mrs. Camp will go too. Gl. finally got the curtains hung over in the large guest house. Sewed my white shoes. Just didn't do much. Wrote at letters.

Jun. 18, Thur.

Cl. Mrs Camp & I went to Beni. I even did some shopping – got plenty tired but Dr. said my heart was going only a bit fast so we can go to Rw. next week. Got a big mail. Dr. Parry & daughter will come here July 1. Ella Spees parcel came – also seeds.

Jun. 19, Fri.

Have felt much better in my tummy not nearly so much nausea. Enjoyed my food more. Masikini & Justin came on bicycles – so they took Williams mail & I wrote we'd surely be there on Mon. Ray talked to us again this morning. Cl. is varnishing the linoleum now.

Jun. 20, Sat.

I baked pie & cookies & helpt with the bread. Got quite tired so decided not to take sleeping pill, but did take cascara. The Rosenberg or whatever the name of the couple that gave the Russians the atomic bomb secret were electrocuted. Gl. went to bed early with fever today.

Jun. 21, Sun.

Rainy & cold. Both Gl. & I had bad night. I was so nauseated I vomitted before break - & again before supper. Mary took blood slides. Gl. feels better this eve & so do I but I doubt if Dr will let us go tomorrow. If I don't feel better I don't want to go.

Jun. 22, Mon.

Ruwenzori. We all slept well & Dr. called after pr. mtg & gave his OK so we fixed lunch & got away by 10:30 – shopt & got mail til 12 then went to our breakfast place & ate our lunch. It really tasted good. Got to Rw. by 3 or so & got the store house cleared out – also one book case of books looked over & sorted over. The house looked so nice but we soon had it badly littered. I sleep in guest room which will be Mrs W.'s.

Jun. 23, Tues.

Got 1 trunk from Miss F's house & packed it full. Someone got in thro window & stole 1 sheet & both pillow cases. We sorted & packed all day & have the car more than loaded & still chairs, books etc etc are left to bring later. We brot some rose cuttings etc for folks here. Not many vegs for us – too loaded. Had strawberries both days.

Jun. 24, Wed.

Home again. Did last things – got rose cuttings and got away in good time & now have my bed set up ready to get into it. Must tell Ray on radio I'm sleeping on my Simmons. We got here ab't 11:30 & Mrs. Camp sent potatoes over, greens, chicken pie, rice pudding & stewed rhubarb. Have some things put away but many more to do. The old hen left her nest & eggs are cold! She's awful.

Helpt teach the children – finished some letters. They went to an out-school for meeting & got back just before it began to rain hard. Did unpacking & repacking – trying to get rid of some of the junk. I need more time – for rugs etc.

Jun. 26, Fri.

Helped with lessons. Cl. put together the book case we brot & Gl. put my books in it. I got some letters off. Started several others. Mrs. Camp brot stockings to darn so I crocheted some. Am not taking sleeping capsule tonight.

Jun. 27, Sat.

Evelyn asked us there for dinner tomorrow so I didn't bake pie – only cookies. Then started to straighten my desk – looking over old films took long & mail came. A large air mail – Byrd's Mindoro trip & pictures, Mrs. Sterret, Emily Barnetts Mother died. Emily flew from Eng. to attend the funeral.

If I could have my choice I'd rather break my wrist than have my heart act up. At least I could go back to my work then. But if this is God's place for me it's OK. We had a lovely dinner at Evelyns. Then a quiet P.M. writing & reading. Meeting here.

The year has gone quickly & I little thot I'd be here for good at this time. Don't understand why but do trust & pray I may still be used to His glory. Earl Camp came this eve to get his Mother & his car. Chas Trout brot him.

Cl. went to Rw. taking a load of stuff for them & bringing more of mine back. Guess we have most everything that's necessary. Left a lot for guest rooms there. 3 Camps here to supper. I taught the children so Gl. could clean out the store house.

Jul. 1, Wed.

Billy talked to us on radio! Earl & his Mother left ab't 3 P.M. Went to Katwa only. Trying to get things a bit settled. I taught children again. Dr. Parry & daughter Margaret came about 4:30. Had tea. Late supper. Miss Parry quite deaf but reads lips very well.

Jul. 2, Thur.

Baked rhubarb pie for dinner. Then finished up school work. Parrys left ab't 3 – and Dr. came bringing Dr. Humphreys – both very ill. Then a bit later Mc Allisters came. Now the guest houses are all full. Expected Chas Trout & Pelletiers to come. Evelyn was taking them.

Jul. 3, Fri.

Taught the children as Gl. got things out of pantry ready for pembe-ing. Looks much better tho not dry yet. Mc Allisters here to dinner. Chas Trouts bringing Pelletiers came ab't 5 P.M. Supper at Evelyns then on to Katwa. All are very heavy. Children are real chunks.

Jul. 4, Sat.

Intended teaching the children but we just didn't have time. No table boy – who also irons – so none has been done & I wanted to do some but my tummy has been so bad all day. I seem to have little strength. Miss Best the nurse came for dinner. Getting some things unpacked.

Jul. 5, Sun.

Dr. Humphrey had dinner here. David has fever so Mrs. couldn't come. Carrell's baby boy was born last night. Mary cares for it. Mr & Mrs. Peters came for Humphreys & had supper here. Late with mtg but looked at movies then Cl. took projector to Dr. to take to Ray.

Jul. 6, Mon.

Dr. left ab't 6. Had school. Ray said M.A. is quite sick with something like flu & Sally Jo has bad eyes – some others are ill too so they will be glad to see Dr. Stomach some better. Sleeping pills finished – but don't take them every night.

Jul. 7, Tues.

Taught the children. Sewed the braided rags into a round rug & put in guest house. The rooms look real cozy with new curtains & table covers & doorways.

Jul. 8, Wed.

We expected Florence family for dinner then noticed they said 10^th & that isn't til Fri. Greens from Sudan will be coming with Dr. tomorrow, but they will be at Beckers. Set a hen & will set another tomorrow since Mary sent some eggs. Washed hair.

Jul. 9, Thur.

Have been feeling like malaria so infirmier took slide & there is – so took 2 aralen. Gl. too feels very punk. Will take sleeping capsule & go to bed. Got a few letters off. Ludwigs called on way to Nyank. & to Rethy to get their children. They go on furlo soon. How well I remember a yr. ago.

Not very comfortable but slept better. Did school work. Faith gets thro quickly but Dick is slow – but remembers well. The Florence family came – plenty of noise. Cl & Mary took Carrells baby to Katwa into the mulatto home for girls.

Baked custard pie for dinner and 2 rhubarbs for tomorrow. Looked for Ludwigs all eve but it's after 8 so don't suppose they will come. Just before noon Miss Winfrey from Tunda & 3 others just called. We had stopt there on way in from Matadi & also Claudons. They wouldn't stay for lunch.

Jul. 12, Sun.

Ludwigs got in just before 9 last eve. Left right after breakfast. We were alone for dinner. Dixes 3 & Miss Schauer here for supper. Rained pretty hard during meeting. We needed it.

Jul. 13, Mon.

Fish today. Yum. Jewell & Miss Schauer were to come to supper but Nina got ahead of us. School as usual. Crocheted at rug of nylons. Wrote Mrs. Graham letter of sympathy.

Jul. 14, Tues.

Gl. canned more red rhubrb. Williams came for dinner, Jewell & Muriel for supper. I baked whole wheat muffins. W's brot a few strawberries – lots of nice tomatoes – some ruby-golds from Uncle Richard's seed.

Jul. 15, Wed.

Everything as usual. I feel very knocked out for I had a bad night – indigestion – pain – no sleep. Going to bed early. Greens were here to dinner.

Jul. 16, Thur.

Have started with the pattern of Rays sweater but I surely don't like the wool. Feel better today but have to be careful of eats. An air from Co. Mr. Dix went to Irumu yesterday.

Jul. 17, Fri.

Gl. canned more tomatoes and made guava jelly and butter. Looks good. I sorted old magazines and fixed up used envelopes for the medical. Had school all A.M.

Jul. 18, Sat.

We sent birthday greetings to Ray but he wasn't on. No one but Stam & Jewell were on. Gl. wrote “G'ma sends greetings the 45^th time”. Baked some – knitted some & mended. Cat went up the chimney & had kittens on a ledge of brick! One fell down into fire place.

Jul. 19, Sun.

Didn't get others on radio this morning. Dr. was on loud. Stam, weak others couldn't hear at all.

Mtgs as usual. Greens were to come for dinner but several are sick. Mrs & 2 girls came but Carol was sick. Dixes for supper Carrell sick.

Jul. 20, Mon.

The Nioka Dr. & the Scientist from Paris came in last eve at mtg time. Williams came for dinner & staid to supper (fish). Scientist goes on tomorrow also Dixes – tho Mrs. had a tooth pulled & it made her sick. Carrell & Muriel have malaria too. This has been a good day for me.

Jul. 21, Tues.

Drs. still here – Dixes left. Greens here for dinner – all well again. Just at dark 2 Austrians came on motor cycle & side car – touring Af. & whole world under auspices of World Council of Churches. Staying the night.

Jul. 22, Wed.

Austrians left and Drs. left too. Greens went to Rw. Late school. Children too tired to work well – went to bed so late last night. Dr. called for me to take cardiograph of my heart. Gl. took me in the car. Saw the picture but didn't mean much to me.

Jul. 23, Thur.

Bad head most all day. Mail came. Letter from Mrs Propst saying she & Teasdales might come up here next mo. Just hope not at the same time Rays & Guildings & Johnsons are here. The Lord will see to it. Greens here to supper. Worked at letters mostly.

Jul. 24, Fri.

Paul Buyses came in last eve & came here for supper. Greens leave tomorrow for Rethy so are taking letters & Mrs. Williams jam. Timmy was here this A.M. so school got mixed up.

Jul. 25, Sat.

Baked but brown bread not nice. Coffee cake alright and husbands cake is alright. The Florence family came ab't 5:30. Brot letters from Ray - & paper for school. Timmy not good tonight.

Jul. 26, Sun.

I had a quiet hour or more while children went to their service. Had a good sleep last night so feel better today. Mr. Florence spoke in our evening service & showed literature.

Jul. 27, Mon.

They left very promptly after 6:15 breakfast. I was up & ready to help but Gl. didn't need me. Williams came about 11:30 & he went on to Bogoro ab't 1. Mrs. W. went to Mary's class. 5 babies were born at Rw this last week. Mrs. Elia helps well.

Jul. 28, Tues.

Ray was on [radio] this morn - & said when he came yesterday he could get no one. Said Sara had a fine birthday. Cl. & Paul Buyse are going to Bunia tomorrow. And now I never wear it. [sweater she was working on this date a year ago]

Jul. 29, Wed.

Cl & Paul B. went to Bunia bule. [Kingwana for “worthless” or “for nothing”.] They were told there were bicycles there & a lot of fellows wanted some & they found them too expensive. Mr Williams came back too. Rained in the night last night & is at it again. I planted some garden. Will do more if rains stay on.

Jul. 30, Thur.

Williams left about 5. The Greek woman's baby died. Clapper came bringing a patient. Cl & Gl went to villages & Dr. wanted a box fixed for burying the baby so Cl. did it after we had supper. Clapper is staying with Evelyn tonight. More chicks hatched out.

Jul. 31, Fri.

Owen and Miss Cowell came in just before noon & Stoughs while we were eating. We expected them all. Now the Com. are meeting – and also there's a Conf. at Mbaus over the wk. end. My tummy is not good today again. Clapper rooms & eats at Beckers.

Aug. 1, Sat.

Such a disappointment when the parcel came because the main thing in it was lemon pow'd & it had burst open & was thro everything so we could hardly get things out. There's a bit of powd. left. Gl. is trying sherbet. All had dinner & supper here. Baked some but tummy not good.

Aug. 2, Sun.

Pretty miserable all day after an awful night of indigestion. Dr. came after church & sent other medicine – tastes like wormwood. Didn't stay up for service – but Dr. came in to see how I was. He does not go to Rethy this week.

Aug. 3, Mon.

Dr. called & said my heart is OK and I had a good rest. Slept all night and am feeling pretty good now. Not very nauseated. The wormwood medicine seems to help. We hope it will help the spitting too. All ate dinner here. Mr Stough went to Rw this P.M. The Com. hope to finish by tomorrow noon. Lovely baked fish but some not good.

Aug. 4, Tues.

Feeling much better. Evelyn asked us all there to supper but I begged off. Ray said John may come with some of the Kenya folks. Hope he does & that they bring him here. Language Com. has finished its work.

Aug. 5, Wed.

Owen & Cowell left early. Mr. Stough came back from Rw. before dinner. I finished back of Rays sweater & have almost finished the yellow one for baby Buyse. Cl. goes to out schools over week end.

Aug. 6, Thur.

Cl. left after breakfast and Mr. Selfridge came ab't 7. We had given up expecting him. Fortunately we had the boy fix up the guest house so it was ready. Gl & children ate at Evelyns.

Aug. 7, Fri.

Stoughs left after breakfast. Stomach is better this P.M. but was not good this morning tho I slept pretty well without a capsule. Buyses had supper here.

Aug. 8, Sat.

Ray got a telegram from John to say he would come to Kasenye on Sat. 15^th – so Ray said they'd come to get him & then come on down here for the wk. end + a few days of the next week. Mr. Selfridge left after breakfast. My tummy has been so much better today.

Aug. 9, Sun.

Ray said they would go to Bogoro Fri. P.M. & get John Sat. & come on down as early as possible. Very strange Sun. Gl, children & I alone all day. Wrote some.

Aug. 10, Mon.

Not feeling up to much this P.M. Broth for supper & bed with the children. Perhaps malaria – perhaps??

Aug. 11, Tues.

Gl. sent a long message to Ray – and he OKed it - so Cl has not gone. Opened Lena's parcel & wrote her. Mr. Williams came last eve & left this A.M.

Aug. 12, Wed.

Billy said “Happy Birthday” to his Mother over the radio but by 8 P.M. he was here – came with Engelbrechts. They came in for coffee but not the night. Baby Buyse came this morning – named & all getting on well. Rays will try to get here in good time Sat.

Aug. 13, Thur.

Feeling pretty miserable all day & not sorry there was no school. Children had a good time playing. Tourists from Calif called. Killed 2 chickens. Because Ericksons are coming Ray thinks they should not.

Aug. 14, Fri.

A very uncomfortable day. Took only soup for meals. Gladys so busy all day. Mrs. Becker will make scalloped potatoes. Beans are ready for the oven. Chicken jelly is ready too. Ray said they'd go to Blukwa tonight & pick up John tomorrow & come on. Ericksons are at Bogoro we suppose & will be here tomorrow.

Aug. 15, Sat.

It's bed time & the party overwith and no Rays nor Ericksons yet. Where are they? I helpt with baking. We did squash pie & baked beans & buns and Mrs. Becker made scalloped potatoes & Evelyn baked a lovely big cake – and just here Rays come.

Aug. 16, Sun.

Cleared ab't noon so we had leftovers from last night on the lawn. Evelyn ate here & we had ham buns – baked beans – lovely cream cheese that Rays brot as sour milk – so nice & finished the cake. Eriksons are spending the wk. end at Bogoro. Rays could not drive to the pier as there was a wide river caused by cloud burst that Ray had to wade to get John from the boat.

Aug. 17, Mon.

Ray worked at car all A.M. Rained so couldn't go for picnic. I made loquat pie. Gl pickled some. Ray said at supper he had a very happy day working at car. Knitted some. Sara cut out 2 shirts for John.

Aug. 18, Tues.

Went to Tundugu [Tungudu] for lunch. A lovely day & a lovely time. Now they are all packed & said goodby for they leave at 4. Eriksons came & had dinner with Nina & went on to Katwa. Miss Coulton & Bromley had a break down ab't 40 kms. from here. Caught a ride & got here – are at Evelyns.

Aug. 19, Wed.

Rays got away before 5. Empty without them. Misses Coulton and Bromley were here to breakfast and then Cl. took them back to their car ab't 40 km. - and repaired it for them. They are having 2 wks. at the hotel at the caves. Nina brot her little girls – 13 of 'em to sing for me. Then they played on the lawn. Buyses here to supper.

Aug. 20, Thur.

Wrote letters mostly. Some one or some thing has done way with that nice hen Mrs. Harter gave us. I fear she was stolen as her eggs were, that were in the nest.

Aug. 21, Fri.

And today the folks came – Johnsons & Guildings. I'm so glad to see them. I have a go of fever and have taken 4 aralen so am not very peppy except to get to bed. Paul & Helen were here for dinner. Brot vegs - & flowers – so pretty.

Aug. 22, Sat.

Not good today – aralen effects my head & nausea. But very nice having the folks here. They brot such a lot of nice things too. Mrs. Guilding brot lovely wool for sweater – now I'll ask Sara if she wants me to make it for her. Helpt with baking.

Aug. 23, Sun.

Sunny and pleasant. All went to A.M. service. Quiet P.M. I had a long nap as I'm feeling effects of aralen, 8 are now finished – 2 more tomorrow night. Mrs. G. & I had a nice visit before mtg.

Aug. 24, Mon.

Miserable day. Dr. gave me other medicine & either it upset me or still the effects of aralen

Had fish for supper and all enjoyed them. Buyses were here too. Looking over old Kodak pictures.

Aug. 25, Tues.

Rained hard in the night. Went to Tungudu for lunch. Children went in swimming but we women staid on the road in the shade knitting or reading. 'Twas a lovely day and a fine drive. Dr Bob & children here til 9 P.M.

Aug. 26, Wed.

Baked bread & helpt quite a bit for the cook hurt his hand a few days ago & hasn't been to work. This is Paul Buyses birthday so we all gathered at Beckers for jello, cake & punch. Stormed hard just before but stopt in time.

Aug. 27, Thur.

Every one getting letters ready & doing last things – washing hair etc. Don't like to think of them going. Finished Ray's pull over so they can take it. Mrs G. brot me wool but will exchange it for other & I'll make a sweater for Sara.

Aug. 28, Fri.

They got away by 9:30 and no rain & quite a nice day til P.M. Both hens came off today but a good many eggs not hatched yet. I have taken 4 Quinamine pills and am awfully upset. Dr called ab't 8 & said no more tonight. I'm chokey & my eyes don't focus & my knees are shakey.

Aug. 29, Sat.

Dr. stopt the quinamine & I took nothing noon & night but the wormwood drops. Had bad head especially this eve. Ab't 1 P.M. took asperin & slept – but got little relief. Dr. says my heart is very steady so will stop the digitalis for a few days.

Aug. 30, Sun.

Bad headache all night and all day. Dr. said aspirin & sleeping powd. but couldn't sleep it off. Went to Evelyns for chicken-dumpling dinner – all station were there – farewell to Miss Edna. Cl went to bed early with bad head too.

Aug. 31, Mon.

Every one needed money so Cl. took Drs. car, & Nina & children & I went with him to Beni. We got a few things. My head lets up some & then is bad – just thumps by spells. It will clear up as that Quinamine gets out of my system. Taking only wormwood & vitamine.

Sep. 1, Tues.

My head has cleared up mostly – is touchy but doesn't ache continually. Worked at covering couch cushions. Wrote Virginia May. Dr. did not call. I'm taking only the wormwood before meals & 1 vitamin – so my stomach should get straight.

Sep. 2, Wed.

Wish I could help Lora celebrate. Dr. called & listened long to my heart and said it was as steady as usual with a little extra beat sometimes. Nothing serious and my tummy seems to appreciate let up from medicine.

Sep. 3, Thur.

The most comfortable day in 6 mo. If I continue to eat like today I'll soon have strength and weight back to normal. Miss Edna here to supper. She gave us 2 rabbits which are now in the ice box for Sun. Mail truck went to Irumu today – but not our letters. Will send Sat with Owen.

Sep. 4, Fri.

I've had a most comfortable day with pretty good appetite. Brands came before dinner. Are at Beckers mostly but here for supper. Bromley and Coulton haven't come. Said goodby to Miss Edna – goes on furlo. Ab't finished reading Silver Chalis by Costain.

Sep. 5, Sat.

I ate so much today I had bad head this P.M. Took aspirin & more at bed time. Not much kitchen work. The girls came before noon but ate at Ninas and went on. Will go to Rethy Mon. Owen went on too. Very short of money – and we need extra when going to Bunia.

Sep. 6, Sun.

Haven't had to use the spittoon at all today and went to communion service too. It does seem so nice to be free from spitting – I showed Dr. before mtg – no spittoon & he suggested we sing the doxology. I'm doing just that. God is good. Had one of Miss Ednas rabbits.

Sep. 7, Mon.

Dr. went to Rethy early this morning. Have had good appetite all day – fish for supper so I may have eaten too much but it was so good. I made husbands cake for supper.

Sep. 8, Tues.

Finally finished darning socks. Dr. B. and Arthur Barnetts are to come this eve but, not yet. Cl. took the key of guest house to Beckers so they c'd go to bed. Still eating pretty good (Cl & Gl) but not so hungry as yesterday.

Sep. 9, Wed.

They came in ab't 9:15 last night. Had breakfast here then Cl and children went with Arthurs to the customs hoping to meet Dr. Bill B. with their goods. Gl. working hard at S.S. lessons. About 4 P.M. Teasdales & Mrs. Propst came – So nice to see them. Mrs. P. shares my room.

Sep. 10, Thur.

They say they must go on tomorrow. It's too short after such a long trip. They washed clothes & hair – roads are very dusty. Dr. Becker & Arthur went to Rw. Mrs. B & Nina help with entertaining so we don't have others except for breakfast. We visit & walk. Nice rain today.

Sep. 11, Fri.

I was sick in the night – up 2 times to vomit – so don't feel so good. Folks left after pr. mtg. Clo took children & Arthurs to Tungudu – after dinner. Paul Hs called but had no room for bananas. Dick has dysentery so he didn't go.

Sep. 12, Sat.

Dr. Arthurs got away after a 6 oclock breakfast. Dr. Becker said yesterday – no more worm wood drops. I have felt really very well today and baked pie shells – buns – pudding - & cake but no Owen nor Ericksons yet.

Sep. 13, Sun.

Evelyn suddenly remembered yesterday was Nina's birthday so she made a lovely cake & we made a big jello & had a surprise dessert supper for her – and afterward Dr. showed pictures. Head has been bad perhaps because of 2 aralen I took last night.

Sep. 14, Mon.

Slept pretty well but awoke with bad head. Went to weigh and get tested – I weigh 105 ½ – and I'm gaining so must have been down to 100. No Ericksons yet tho we fried lots of fish. Owen came and they had dinner here & left right after. She was glad to get away.

Sep. 15, Tues.

What a night I had with awful indigestion. Gl. called Dr. & tho Ive eaten very little yet I can still raise that nasty goo. Ericksons & Jack got here for dinner & Williams for tea and now 7:30 Clapper comes. She shares my room. Ive not been able to help Gl. a bit – so sorry. Slept most all day.

Sep. 16, Wed.

Ericksons at Ninas for supper. Ray said Kenya folks were having dinner with them & when they go back John will go with them. That's very nice – but more & more I feel they left here in such a hurry because we were such a crowd. Who could help it, tho.

Sep. 17, Thur.

Margaret, Evelyn & Nina left for Bunia at 6. Ericksons left for Nyankundi after dinner. So we are alone. Plenty to do to clean up. Girls didn't get back – car needed fixing. Gl. making plaid skirt. Got a few letters off.

Sep. 18, Fri.

Girls got back from Bunia ab't 3 P.M. brot most everything we sent for – both Ward parcels and Ella's tho the mail bag that Owen took never reached Irumu. Where is it? Owen may be coming on Mon. so we hope to locate it then. No money from office. Where will it come from? God knows.

Sep. 19, Sat.

Margaret C. here to break. & dinner. Not much baking to do. We were just settled for a quiet hr. before lights out when a car came in to Evelyns. Chas Trout family & Marion & Marjory & husband. All settled now in both guest houses. We hoped Cl. would come in but not yet.

Sep. 20, Sun.

Trout family here to breakfast. All left ab't 9:30. Alone all day & I intended to go to mtg but my head was so bad I took an aspirin & had a nap. Then still another nap after dinner when all others did services at Beckers. Its very nice to be getting back into the former ways before I came & upset things.

Sep. 21, Mon.

Cl. came in time for dinner. All of us have been busy getting Billys clothes marked & mended. Dr. took another cardiograph & says it is very much better than before. I have gained ½ lb. this last wk. - at least I didn't loose. Have bad indigestion all day. Washed hair.

Sep. 22, Tues.

Full of many things mostly getting clothes in order - & getting packed. Folks coming in for last things & boys to pay.

Sep. 23, Wed.

Rethy – Dorm. & no mistake – the children are enjoying it. Had a very nice trip – nice day etc. Saw several enroute. My bed is in Ray's office. I've had supper – a cracker & tea. Gl. is at the other end in girls' dorm. Beatrice King called for just a minute before going on to Aungba. We got here late because we couldn't find where the rabbit belonged the W's sent. Cls saw Dad & Mother Deans – landed on Mon. They look so well.

Sep. 24, Thur.

Had a tray for breakfast but have been out to dining room for other meals. Noisey but natural. It's so nice being in this room. Cl. left for Blukwa – many have been in to see me. Some parents have gone home today. Dr. Bill B. is at Oicha & will come up tomorrow also Dr. B. for council mtg. Indigestion still bad – but have enjoyed my meals.

Sep. 25, Fri.

More left today. Don't know if Drs got here or not. Gl. is busy all day & as long as lights are on. I put Faith & Dick to bed & get them washed & ready for meals. Did hemming for Sara & Gl. Mr. Buyse will get me in the morning to look after my teeth.

Sep. 26, Sat.

Marked some clothes & mended some & have one green sock ready to begin the heel. We ate at Vogels this noon. Uncle John B. got me & looked over my teeth but found nothing to do. Dr. Bill came last night & went to Blukwa today. Will see him tomorrow.

Sep. 27, Sun.

Cl. came just before dinner which we had at Arthurs and I finally saw Willie or Dr. Bill as he is called now. He looks very natural. He gave the talk at the P.M. mtg. I spoke to the young folks this eve. They have sandwich suppers – very nice. No boys come, children wash dishes. Ray helps. Cl went back to Blukwa. Gl. talked on tape recorder.

Sep. 28, Mon.

Helpt Sara a bit in kitchen then mended & knitted & upacked 2 parcels from Aunt Cora. Did more recording tonight. Faith, Dick & Billy each said some nursery stories to Bigmama. We are working at a jigsaw puzzle.

Sep. 29, Tues.

Ericksons & Kerstetters went to Blukwa as the Council called them (E) & coming back this eve they took Delight with them. I knitted up all the green wool I had - & am now crocheting – but have mending to do tomorrow. Council may not finish before Fri.!! Dr goes home tomorrow.

Sep. 30, Wed.

This morn. they said Council might finish today. We hope so. Dr. Bill came to dinnner – of lamb stew – scalloped corn & ice cream dessert. Am gaining weight. My clothes are getting tighter. Wrote note to Mrs B & Mrs P. to send with Bill.

Oct. 1, Thur.

Gl. got here for late dinner. There were many last things to do – but think all is about packed now. Many callers all day – parents leaving – Council arranged that all non-missionary children could return. Want to leave by 6. Several girls M.A. & others came in to ask me to teach them to knit!

Oct. 2, Fri.

HOME. A long day. Stopt at Djugu, Bunia, Nyankundi, Irumu, Lolwa & got here by 8:15. Evelyn had supper ready for us and I ate too much & now have indigestion again. All very tired but glad to be back. Rained here this P.M.

Oct. 3, Sat.

Baked pies (rhubarb) – made custard for dinner. Busy putting things away mostly. Ab't 4 a Mr. Morris & Mr Levitt came. Evangelists from Eng. who are visiting missions & taking pictures. Weighed & find I haven't gained a bit – 48 kilos as before – but on Ray's scales I did.

Oct. 4, Sun.

Another heavy rain. Let boys go to mtg. I went to communion service. Had birthday (for Jewell) & welcome (for Vera) supper at Beckers. The Englishmen made tape recordings of Jno 3:16 in several languages. While at our evening service, Eldo Epp came on his way from Mombasa with car & trailer. Says Kijabe was threatened by Mau Mau.

Oct. 5, Mon.

Cl. & men went to pigmies for a little camp. Couldn't get school started early & Gl. rested long this P.M. so Faith didn't have a big lesson. Kenya Gov't is turning all Kikuyu, Meru & Embu out of Nairobi if they have no permit to be there. Killed some guards.

Oct. 6, Tues.

School went better for Faith but Dick didn't do much for me so went to P.M. school & did better. Had more time. I darned socks and wrote letters. Seems the fish truck isn't coming any more. Sorry. All had supper by 5:30. Will Cl. & men be in tomorrow? Letter from Helen saying they c'd not come.

Oct. 7, Wed.

Cl. & the men came back just as we sat down to dinner. They say they had a very nice time with plenty of sunshine for pictures. Getting letters finished up. Baked cinnamon rolls & buns. Men at Beckers for supper.

Oct. 8, Thur.

Dr. gave Williams a radio so they were told this morning that 4 would be there for dinner. She sent lots more berries & for some way to get them to Rethy. She needs the jars for they are on full force now. She sent a lot of eggs – 4 doz. & asks 1.50 each! The Aus. had such a nice day. They go tomorrow.

Oct. 9, Fri.

The men left ab't 10 for Nyankundi. The berries did not come with Dr. for he had a load and still these others are here. I feel awful about it – and would have asked these men to take them but they had quite a load. Two mulatto girls came from Betongwe. Don't know how long they stay. They are in Dicks room.

Oct. 10, Sat.

Baked buns – cinnamon rolls, cake & pies. and made grape nuts. The wool for Saras sweater came also a parcel from Cora – jello etc. All so nice. Jacqueline moved down to med – is with girls there. Gl packed a chop box for her & Monique so they are on their own which is better.

Oct. 11, Sun.

Quiet day. Chicken dinner. My first church service in 7 mo. Had Hi tea at 5:15. Dr. & Mrs Williams & Nina & Mrs. Mc Allister came. Children had good rest so all went to service. Williams leave for Kampala tomorrow and will post Mrs G's letter.

Oct. 12, Mon.

All of us went to see Dr. Faith had a tooth pulled. Dick had a change of med for itch. I gained ab't 2 lb. Gl. is treating her finger for arthritis. And it rained all A.M. so Dr. Williams couldn't get off to Rw til after dinner which they ate here. Had part of school. Gl. got letters printed & we 3 worked at coloring til lights out.

Oct. 13, Tues.

Expected Paul Buyses but they have not come. Jacquelin came this A.M. & helpt with the coloring & again this eve when Cl & I helped too. We have about 1/3 done. Want to get some sent on Thur. School went very good today.

Oct. 14, Wed.

Wrote several letters to put in with Gl's Christmas letter.

Cl. not feeling well – malaria, perhaps. Jacquelin helped color this P.M. but not this eve. She isn't well. I taught the children this P.M. Gl had womens mtg. Both of us worked at coloring til lights went out.

Oct. 15, Thur.

Got quite a few letters off with the help of the Christmas greetings. Are coloring still more. She must have printed many more than 250. Jack Ingles brot Mr Williams to Dr. He fell & hurt his arm. They went back right away. Brot lots of fresh strawberries & also the boxes of jam for Rethy.

Oct. 16, Fri.

School all A.M. with no interruptions. Colored letters all P.M. & since supper have typed several letters. Want to do a lot more before mail day.

Oct. 17, Sat.

Baked buns, coffee cake & pie shells. Asked Drs to come for dinner but Mary had asked them. Killed a chicken – for tomorrow. Mail brot 2 letters from Co at Hooppole. One said the Tampico-Hoop R.R. was being sold & steel is up in price all share-holders get .65 on the dollar. Father owned 11 shares so we each get $119. Whoever thot - - but the Lord knew long ago we'd need it NOW.

Quiet day. All meetings as usual. Gl. working at Mary's Christmas picture for greeting letters. I wrote several letters.

Oct. 19, Mon.

Fish came again – first in several weeks. Dr. has gotten a lot of cement for the church so Cl. will be busy. Wrote more letters & colored quite a bit. Rained most all A.M.

Oct. 20, Tues.

Wonder how all celebrated. [birthdays] Work & play as usual, and a few more letters written & all the greetings colored. We thot we had lots too many but there will be very few left.

Oct. 21, Wed.

Ray said Mary A. is sick. Mrs. Mc Allister had dinner here. Rained hard P.M. so Gl. didn't have pr. mtg. with women but got started very late with children & was just begun when Buyses came. They eat suppers at B's. Paul came for water & lunch – he goes to Mambasa early tomorrow.

I'll bet Klines are remembering a year ago. Dr. Humphrey called bringing Dr. & Mrs Nelson – C.B's at Costermansville. When Mrs Buyse went home after lunch she heard a noise in the corner of the room & there was a large snake. Cl. shot it 5 ½ ft. long. Paul went to Mambasa early & back.

Oct. 23, Fri.

Buyses (L.) brot Mary Ann down. She has Dicks bed tonight. Paul H's had dinner here on way to Irumu. Cl. went over & got Williams. & they sleep at Evelyns. but eat here. Cl & they go on to Bogoro for ordination service Sun.

Oct. 24, Sat.

Paul & Helen came bringing Laurences & Miss Everett. So nice to see them (Laurences). Then Miss Curry & Miss Herbold came. They are driving up from Mombasa. M.A. has kept quiet today. Cl & Williams went to Bogoro. Birthday party at Evelyns. I weighed & haven't gained a bit in 2 wks. Worked in kitchen all day.

Oct. 25, Sun.

I staid home with Mary Ann and when church was out we went to Mary H's for a yummy chicken dinner. Buyses Sr. & Carolyn S left right after dinner. Currey, Herbold, & Vera came to supper. I staid home with M. A. & the children.

Oct. 26, Mon.

Cl & Williams got back for supper. Buyses got away for Biasiko by 6. We had a good A.M. of school. M.A. studied a bit too. She was sick before going to bed last eve. Dr. said she was too active yesterday so she has been quiet – studying & is trying to crochet.

Oct. 27, Tues.

Cl & Williams left after pr mtg. Mrs. Mc Allister & Jacquemin came for dinner. Ab't 4 P.M. Stoughs & Prof. Winsor came. They brot word that Prue Frost arrived at Irumu today. Seems no one knew she was coming by plane.

Oct. 28, Wed.

Stoughs left just after 6 for Biasiko. Gl. had womens mtg so I taught the children. M.A. felt pretty well all day so got quite a bit of studying done. Went to grad. exercises for 5^th grade. 10 finished – all very nice.

Oct. 29, Thur.

Gl & I had quite a nice bunch of letters ready to send today. Dr. saw M.A. & says she is doing well. She is eating much better. She is crocheting an apron I started when home on furlo. School went well. Jacqueline is helping Gl. mark Faith's things for Rethy.

Oct. 30, Fri.

This [Stoughs & Prof. Winsor coming from Biasiko] is an annual affair. The meals do taste so good. I don't help much with dinner & I do eat so heartily – more than I ought to. have cookies mixed & in ice box ready for baking tomorrow.

Oct. 31, Sat.

Stoughs came from Biasiko. Baked pies, buns & cinnamon rolls and “cat” cookies. Made 10 individual pies & Gl put lemon filling in with ears of crust & raisins for eyes & nose. Cute. After supper Gl took the 3 dressed up in black & orange - & visited around town. Both of us are plenty tired. I made baked beans & she brown bread for supper.

Nov. 1, Sun.

Very pleasant day – blessed communion service. Dr. has his ticket for flying to India. We are so glad – twill be a nice change. Alone at noon – all guests here for supper. Dr. told me to come to his office tomorrow, so M.A. & I go.

Nov. 2, Mon.

Gained a kilo. Ray wants M.A. to come back with Stoughs or some one for she is picking up fast. Better for her school work to be back in school. Cl. takes Dr. in the morning – to Bunia – Bogoro – Irumu. he leaves at 7 Wed morning.

Nov. 3, Tues.

Cl. went to Beckers for 6 oclock breakfast & then they were off. Mrs went too – a crowd were to see them off. We are alone now til tomorrow. Made candy for Sally Jo's birthday.

Nov. 4, Wed.

Cl. got here by 10 & Stoughs shortly after. Mrs. Becker had dinner with us – then the Blukwa folks left taking M.A. with them. It's lonely without her. Stoughs brot berries & rhubarb. Gl. had a good dinner.

Nov. 5, Thur.

Dr. Arthur came just at noon. He left Stan. yesterday morning so didn't see Dr. Becker. He, Dr. A. went to see if he was needed for anything & then we had early supper & he left for Nyankundi.

Nov. 6, Fri.

Wonder if M.A. got home this evening – hope so. Finished the back of Sara's sweater & began the front. Mrs. Mc Allister & Jacqueline here to dinner. We cut peel for fruit cake.

Nov. 7, Sat.

Baked & did usual work, but felt dizzy by spells & noticed heart pumping hard but regular. Gl's Xmas parcels are here & she has to pay enormous customs, & they are all 1^st class & should be customs free. It's terrible. but what can we do?

Nov. 8, Sun.

Mrs. Becker here to dinner. Otherwise the day was as usual. The 2 boys who were jailed by some one came back this eve. Ray wasn't on the air this morning – at least we couldn't hear him & no one could hear Jewell.

Nov. 9, Mon.

School & fish etc as usual. Mrs. Mc Allister here to dinner. We all happy birthdayed Sally Jo. Faith & Dick went to Jewells & said it themselves. Such a a thrill, I'm sure she has had a wonderful day. 3 pygmies were put into jail today for destroying property of an outschool teacher.

Nov. 10, Tues.

Faith's work didn't go so well – too scatter-brained. Dick has sore finger – ulcer in his mouth – sty on his eye. Mrs. Mc Allister here again – she enjoys playing the organ. Children forgot & went to the native village which is forbidden.

Nov. 11, Wed.

Have been living 9 yrs ago over again so have been at Kijabe much in my thots.

Jacqueline & Mrs. Mc Allister here to dinner. I don't get time to help with the dinner at all & seldom know what is coming and do get so hungry. I'm surely gaining fast these days.

Still memories!

School went well for Faith but Dick couldn't read at all. Alone for all meals. Got a few letters off. Mary H. sent me a nice blue sweater. A little mail from Beni. Gl. sent almost Fr 1,000 - customs on first class parcels!!!

Nov. 13, Fri.

Baked the Christmas cakes. They look & smell good. One got too brown there are 5. Cat had kittens. Cl. has things together for going to school on Mambasa road.

Nov. 14, Sat.

Baked as per usual altho Cl. left after breakfast & we go to Beckers for dinner. Nice mail. Byrds have a baby boy. John wrote ab't the Downing house burning. Hollenbecks were living in it – all Downings stored goods burned & much of Hollenbecks too.

Nov. 15, Sun.

To Mrs. Beckers for dinner – so yummy – chicken, string beans, ice cream. Vera read the lesson – then we had her phono.

Nov. 16, Mon.

Cl. came back in time for dinner & Mrs. Mc A. was here. Played the phono this eve. Fish for supper.

Nov. 17, Tues.

Cl. has gone to Katwa to take Mrs. Mc Allister & Billy to Dr. Humphrey. Billy ate some of the ointment she was using on his impetigo and was a very sick baby so Mrs B. asked Cl. to drive them over. We do hope he is better by now.

Nov. 18, Wed.

Cl. & the others got back this A.M. Billy is better & will soon be OK. The big chief from Betongwe who came for an operation a mo. or more ago – died last night. He accepted the Lord as Savior & was eager to get back & burn his witch craft things. The body is taken to Betongwe & Jacqueline goes home too.

Nov. 19, Thur.

Got several letters off & 3 more ready to go with Cl. tomorrow when he & Mrs. Becker go to meet Dr. Cl. is having some trouble with malaria. Lots of green locusts these days & natives all have time off to catch 'em. F & D fried some too!

Nov. 20, Fri.

Cl. & Mrs. Becker were off at 5 & back for dinner. There was no plane today – not til Tues. Some mail came – The $119. from the Hooppole R.R. How thankful I am for it.

Nov. 21, Sat.

Baked & worked most all day. Pressed & sewed shoulders of sweater. Am at sleeves now. No back ache nor any other ache – Thank God. Writing Al's birthday letter.

Nov. 22, Sun.

Didn't go to church but staid & got dinner. Cl. at Conf. 3 km. out. Mrs Becker had 11 with us. We had just finished when Cl. came. He finished & Mr Williams came. and he was eating when Dr. Trouts 6 came. Marjory & husband are on way for plane to U.S. Cl took Mr. W. to Rw. to bring in native woman. Haven't gotten here yet.

Nov. 23, Mon.

Dr. Becker came. Ingles was at Irumu & brot him. And Mr. W. got his car part in the mail so they wont go to Bunia. Perhaps Cl will take them home tomorrow. Cl & I went to greet Dr. & he told us a lot ab't his trip. He enjoyed it much & said it was very worthwhile. Pembed the boys room.

Nov. 24, Tues.

So rainy this morn only 2 workmen came so they did the veranda & now we hope to do this room tomorrow. Cl is at Rw. took Williams home. The man working at Camp's car finally got it going ab't 2 P.M. Wrote Agnes. Mended all socks – so no knitting.

Nov. 25, Wed.

Am sleeping in Faith's room & my things are scattered all over but my room is pembed & I hope to get back in tomorrow. Cl. came ab't 12:30 – brot strawberries – etc a lot of nice things. Plans going on for dinner at 3 tomorrow. Mc Allisters are in town. Nina says baby looks pale & thin. They are at Beckers.

Nov. 26, Thur.

THANKSGIVING! and how we do praise God for His goodness during the year. All had dinner at Evelyns – Mc Allisters were there & they were especially thankful that Billy is getting well again. After dinner at 2 they left for Lolwa. Dr Arthur called Dr. Becker to come so he was not here. Such a good dinner. Baked ham. Gl. pear jello salad – olives – etc. I baked pumpkin pie. Got all back into my room. It's so nice & clean.

Nov. 27, Fri.

How little I dreamed that I'd have spent most of the year here. But I do thank God for such a lovely place to stay and work to do that really helps. Cleared out living room & pembe-ed. A young man (Bertow) from Nairobi came & Cl took him to see pygmies. Mail came by Dr.

Nov. 28, Sat.

Baking etc as usual – only baked cookies too. Just after dinner Drs Humphrey & Nelson & alice Trout & baby came. Drs are meeting here to hear Dr. Becker's report on Lusknu Conf. Ab't 4:30 Dr. Arthur & family & Dr Bob & Ruth came. Mrs. Becker had all men & we women & children. We were 11. Baby Trout is ill – goes into convulsions & no Dr. there so Al came along.

Nov. 29, Sun.

I'm sorry ab't yesterday for I got very cross because boys ran off to Beni & there was much work – found later Gl. had given permission. Dr. Arthurs ate here then left for Nyankundi & Rethy. I felt so badly because I didn't send them [Ray and Sara] any thing for their anni – only a card last wk. I thot of it yesterday but in the commotion I forgot it again. Dr. Stephens were with Arthur.

Nov. 30, Mon.

Williams came in ab't 10. Went to office. Weigh 111. Dr. says everything is OK. & do I want to get to work? Sure. Hope Council can arrange it. Mrs. W. has borrowed Gl's pressure cooker – hope it comes back OK.

Dec. 1, Tues.

Mrs W. returned the pressure as she got Jewells. Owen ate dinner here as he & Cl. went to Butembo right after to get something for Dr's motor. Not back. Cleaned out & pembed magazine. Getting last of Christmas mail off. Sleeping at Cl's.

Dec. 2, Wed.

Too much other to do to pembe but hope to get the dining room done tomorrow. Cl. did get back last night ab't 9:30. Wrote some letters. Had bad pain in abdomen all day. Better now.

Dec. 3, Thur.

Pembed dining room – looks very nice & clean. All tired. Baked cookies this P.M. for Cl's safari and ironed curtains and dress. Cl. made frame for net.

Dec. 4, Fri.

Cl. went to out schools. Word on radio says Mr. Stough suffers much – seems no better. Prayer is asked for him. Vans are at Rethy. Pembed bath room. Ironed all P.M. Paul H. here to dinner on his way to Irumu to meet a new worker.

Dec. 5, Sat.

Nothing much to bake but still a hectic day. Just after mail arrived, Uhlingers came from Stan. - had driven in from Matadi. Look well. Will stay til Council on 16^th. Could get almost nothing on radio. Paul H. & family of new workers stopt for drinks & cookies. Talked late.

Dec. 6, Sun.

Radio worked this morning but Dr. just came on as Stam signed off but Ray ans. also Stam. All were glad Uhlingers are here & all mtgs as usual only ab't 2 P.M. a family from Nairobi on way to Holland by car across desert stopt to fix car. & so had tea. We got no reading nor writing done. Had mtg by lamp light – motor stopt.

Dec. 7, Mon.

Drs. got off late for Bogoro as he had surgery at daylight. Ray asked about hunting plans – wants Cl. to tell him but Cl. isn't back yet. So we will tell him in the morning to wait a couple of days. Good fish supper. W's at Ninas – Lights went off.

Dec. 8, Tues.

Did small room off dining room. Cook said he saw Matia who went with Cl. & returned & says Cl. is coming back next Mon.! Ray wants to know what the plans are. couldn't hear him but all others. They repeated. Lights went out again.

Dec. 9, Wed.

And Spindlers aren't here yet but we do expect them soon. Cleaned Gl's silver this P.M. & will do mine tomorrow. Did the porch today cleaned stove & scrubbed. Looks real clean & nice. Brands came ab't 4 but are at Beckers. No Cl. yet.

Dec. 10, Thur.

Dr. went to Ruwenzori. Cleaned hall. No Cl. yet. Could not hear Ray at all nor Eddie – radio reception is very poor these days. Got some mail off – my aid for repair.

Dec. 11, Fri.

Cl. came home just at noon. Dr. & Uhlingers left early for Biasiko. Could hear only Jewell & she got no one else. Did Gl's room today – curtains & all. Looks so nice now. Cl. had a nice week out.

Dec. 12, Sat.

Baked apple pie of dry apples. Ray wants to know plans for next wk. Hope Cl. goes & talks to him tomorrow. Uhlingers got back in good time. Mr Stough & Dr. Brown are here at Dr's. Mr S. wants Xray.

Dec. 13, Sun.

Alone all day. Can't get Ray on radio. Cl. went down – but couldn't get anyone. Will try again tomorrow. All services as usual.

Dec. 14, Mon.

Cl. could get Ray only faintly but he shouted in & Ray seemed to get him somewhat. We suggest they come down on Fri. or Sat. & then the 3 men go hunting at Irumu on Mon. & Tues. Nina's girls gave program this eve good. Williams here to dinner.

Dec. 15, Tues.

Tried to say happy birthday to Mary Ann but couldnt hear any one but Aba. Mr. Stough went today. Uhlingers & Dr. go tomorrow. Nna goes with U's. Ironed this PM.

Dec. 16, Wed.

Uhlingers got away abt 4. & Nina. Dr. left ab't 8. Couldn't hear any one but Aba – again – sure queer weather these days. Be glad when Rs get here. wont need radio. Waxed the living room floor yesterday – varnished linoleum this eve. Vera came to dinner her birthday yesterday. council mtg. Spose Uhlingers know where they go.

Dec. 17, Thur.

We hoped they'd get in for supper but no one has come. Dr. Williams, Faulkners, & Uhlingers. Got rooms ready. Faith is back in my room. Finished reading her book.

Dec. 18, Fri.

Williams bringing Billy got here ab't 11 last night. Uhlingers a bit later. Dr. at 4 A.M. & Faulkners come tomorrow. Rays got here ab't 7:15. Nice seeing them again. Sara is heavy – M.A. looks well & so do all.

Dec. 19, Sat.

And it's [Mary's rug, one year ago] not made yet for the house hasn't materialized. Rays brot so much stuff – what we ordered & more. so have been busy putting away. Station birthday supper for Vera, Mary Ann & Cl. Very nice time. Nice having Mrs. Camp here again. No Faulkners yet. Williams left after dinner.

Dec. 20, Sun.

Faith & Dick have been told Mommy is going camping. Dick has made no fuss but Faith cried hard before meeting. Seems happier now. Have 6 “airs” ready to post. Congo cards all signed up. Breakfast must be ready by 6.

Dec. 21, Mon.

Ray, John, Cl. Billy & Gl. got away shortly after 6. Floyd, P. Stough, Mr. Thornberry came this eve. Floyd is in guest house. Stough & Thornberry at Beckers. They saw Rowlee & Barth at Irumu waiting for our crowd. Wonder when they will meet up.

Dec. 22, Tues.

Wonder how she [sister, Alice, 70^th birthday] spent the day. Sara baked Santa cookies & I date. Had the 3 men for dinner. Then Faulkners came for supper – Mrs. & the girls. The car gave out some distance out & they got a lift in. The men were busy looking at the medical & pygmies. They return tomorrow.

Dec. 23, Wed.

Mr. F. & Billy got in ab't 10:30 but none of us heard them. He worked at car all A.M. but insisted they w'd not eat lunch here so we fixed sandwiches & thermos tea – but they ate here after all. Ab't supper time Chaponnieres came thro but went right on to Rw.

Dec. 24, Thur.

Again I can say [“Such a pile of gifts under our tree.”] The hunters got back just as we finished our dinner. Everything was fine tonight. 26 of us and a lively time. Gl. seemed to enjoy her camp. Billy is terribly sun burned. Sara helpt stuff turkey. All were very good. I baked mince pie. & do nuts. Have put gifts out & all are in bed now. Ray was Santa.

Dec. 25, Fri.

And what a yr. I've had and we still praise Him for a wonderful day together. By now next Christmas we will be scattered but our gracious God will still be our guide and Father. Gl & I staid from mtg & baked buns & cake for the birthday tea on our lawn for Mrs Camp.

Baked as usual & so much to do in kitchen as boys skip off at any time – for a bit – bot & killed a sheep. Frcs 300. Guess we are all bathed & clean clothed and thats saying something for 12 of us.

Dec. 27, Sun.

Yes, it's been Sun. but pretty busy taking care of meat – besides getting meals. Sara & I didn't go to meeting til this eve – but she had good rest – is getting relaxed. Twill be a busy wk. ahead. No radio messages – seem to be lots of sun spots or something – but with Rays here we don't mind much.

Dec. 28, Mon.

Quite a hectic day for all but especially for Gl – pay boys – balance books. Get safari things ready for 12. I pressured 7 pts lamb stew – baked beans for tomorrow. All pretty well ready & all very tired.

Dec. 29, Tues.

Ruwenzori Left after breakfast got there by 11 had lunch then the children & Daddys went to the river. Williams had set up Miss N's stove & had a cook & table boy on hand & lots in the cupboard of fruit & tomatoes & beds for all – and with what we brot there's plenty of blankets. Seems like Dad must be here.

Dec. 30, Wed.

Already to leave by 4 A.M. for Lake. All others going too. Plans have changed and we are staying the wk. end for all enjoy it here more than at Oicha. It is so restful here I wish Council would see best for us to come. Klines are rested & could do the Oicha work easier.

Dec. 31, Thur.

What a yr! God has been so faithful. I thank Him for health & strength again. A year of new experiences & found Him able for all. Left ab't 4:15 for the Lake. All the others went too – 24 in all – and when others went home we came to our old camping place at Semliki & camped. Mary & Billy Faulkner staid too. No tent – just stars.

Memorandum A

It has been a happy year in many ways. A happy beginning and ending tho not so pleasant in the middle with 6 mo. of spitting and nausea. I would have been so glad to go Home but evidently His time is not yet. And so, we wait & pray He will guide in whatever He has for me to do. The children have been so so good to me. Thank God for them.

Memorandum B

It has been such a joy to teach Faith & Dick. They learn quickly and are very interesting. Klines have asked to return to Rw. and I've always said I didn't care one way or another – if we stay at Oicha or come to Rw. but since we are here I have a great urge to stay – not only for me & my work but for Gl's sake too. She is so tired. We do pray Council will be guided by the Lord Himself.
