& we have been writing letters. Miss Cowell arrived at

probably the reason Harters have not come.

cold & wet we had fire in grate. Putting curtains up in
my house for Vera & Miss Wellson will stay there.

And they aren't here yet 8:30. So we all go to bed.
We had supper for 11. Table set & all. Now we do wonder
what's keeping them. The girls : Wambold, Porter &

& church. Mr. & Mrs. Watkins are returning from
dinner at the hotel and it is 9:30. Wrote Gl. Mr. W. said it
is their 30th: he has been married for 15 yrs
& so has she! Betty read Bible story.
Jul. 18, Mon.
Hope Ray had a nice day. We baked peanut cookies
but they are like candy. Made some fudge for David's
birthday tomorrow. Metusela had an affair ab't bumping into
a fellow with his bicycle & the fellow wants to fine him
several hundred Frcs!!! We shall see.
Jul. 19, Tues.
David's birthday. Mas. baked a checker cake &
buns & Betty gave weiners & we had picnic supper in
little park – popcorn too. W's pretty well packed &
ready for early breakfast. Gl sent eggs & chicks &
we will bake for them tomorrow & a man will leave Thur.
Jul. 20, Wed.
They got away ab't 7:15 & then boys took out
all mats – bed rooms & dining room but it's so rainy
none are dry. Baked bread & cookies to send out. 3 or 4
left this morning to attend the wk. end Conf at Kasangalis.
A man will go tomorrow with food things.
Jul. 21, Thur.
Cleaned more rooms & put down mats but the
dining room mat is still wet so keep on veranda to dry. No
mail man. Betty says this is a holiday. We had pr mtg
instead of school a special call for Congo.
Jul. 22, Fri.
Washed big wash but none got dry. A leopard got
Muhindo's rabbit last night so they set a trap & I shut
up Lassie in the magazine & ab't 7:30 a dog howled &
cried & yelped & barked all in one breath. I thot it
was Lassie but Mas. came to see the trouble & found his
dog in the trap. Guess no leopard will come after that
kilele [Kingwana for “commotion”].
Jul. 23, Sat.
I baked a few buns & made coffee cake &
filled pie crust with raisins. Mail came just after
broadcast. Quite a nice lot. Many belated magazines.
Jul. 24, Sun.
Beautiful A.M. like June. Didn't sleep so well last
night but was able to stay awake thro a long sermon. Betty
ate dinner & supper here – then we had music & I
read an article by H. Bonar & we talked & now it's
9:30. Cloudy & rainy P.M.
Jul. 25, Mon.
Wash dried some but much is still wet. Mas. comes
now & Muh [Muhindo] has time off. When I went to bed
last night found Gl's cat having her kittens on my bed. She
has 4 & is now over in the magazine where I made a bed
for her but she didn't like it. She has staid there today.
Jul. 26, Tues.
Men came ab't noon with 5 chickens & some eggs
& nice letter. They had a blessed 3 day Conf. with
people from all over the dist. They have more schools to
visit before coming back – but expect to get in on Sat.

Radio said Paul Buyses were bringing Jane, the
baby, to Oicha to Dr. & she died before they got there.
Poor Kathryn!
Told Metusela he could have a wk or 2 off to move
to our village. If I need help Koronelio will help a bit.
Jul. 28, Thur.
Baked bread & fixed up a parcel for Cl &
Gl. A man got it & will go with all carriers to Kikingi
tomorrow & hope they will get back on Sat. Saw snow on
our peaks yesterday. It's pretty cold these days &
nights.
Jul. 29, Fri.
Will they be here by tomorrow night? Men got away
this morning so hope we will be a united family again.
Mail came. Little Janie Buyse was sitting in her hi
chair when she went into convulsion & didn't gain
consciousness again. So hard for Kathryn. Radio said L.
Buyses came last eve.
Jul. 30, Sat.
They got in ab't 4:30. Gl has a huge raw blister on
heel. Ab't 11 Israele & Matayo came & said they had
found the boys who took the things from guest house &
tried to rob church money box. Had a long trial – a crowd
gathered on lawn. Cl took culprits to Mr. Van Hamme – Admtr.
Jul. 31, Sun.
Quiet day – services as usual. All ate here all
day. Talked long at eve mtg telling of their safari. God
blest them & used them in blessing to others. How I
remember a yr. ago. Must write Beth a birthday letter
tomorrow.
Aug. 1, Mon.
Paid all the help – Thank God. I had had my dinner
& nap when Eksters came. Apolo came & helped.
Muhindo had gone for vegs. Mas. has 1 wk off if he wants it.
Getting letters off.
Aug. 2, Tues.
No Dr. came – but some tourists brot here by Mr.
Cook chauffeur. Very nice ladies & a So Af. man. Gl.
took them around. They left a bit of money. Baked buns &

next Sun. unless the Bukavu ladies come early – as I
suggested they could.
Aug. 8, Mon.
Metusela washed. Masikini came when I called
because Muhindo is sick. Quite a bit of sickness these days.
Car all packed – sewing machine goes – I'll miss it. Started
sewing pieces on blanket. Will do the rest on Gls machine.
Aug. 9, Tues.
Cl & Gl got away ab't 7. Masi. cleaned buffet
shelves & drawers. We got the corner glass cupboard up
yesterday so all is arranged there. He painted a water drum
too. Zefania one of the Blukwa trained teachers is off in
his head some times – like Milaun.
Aug. 10, Wed.
It's 10 P.M. & I've just finished reading my
letters. Justin went for the mail & got here ab't 7:30
or 8. Bettys light is still on too. No work nor school today
as there was heavy fog & rain all day. Metusela helped
in kitchen - will go for meat tomorrow - have asked Mas. to
come.
Aug. 11, Thur.
Metusela brot meat. Muhindo came to work. No garden
boys yet. Think I'll take one of Gl's tomorrow. Sewed on the
blanket & made cushion for the pretty top Miss Howard
gave me. Quite large but pretty.
Aug. 12, Fri.
Finished the blanket cover & swept up. Wrote
Letha this eve. Elders worked on veranda again most all day
– also yesterday - & aren't finished yet. Called one of
Gl's men to weed here – mine are both sick. So many sick
folks – like flu.
Aug. 13, Sat.
No guests yet so wont come til Mon. I spose. Worked
in kitchen all day. Both Mu & Mas have been down with
flu. Many are down with it. Word came in mail that Mr.
Ekster left his suit case at Kisindi so went to send a
bicycler to Oicha to have it announced so they know where it
is before they leave Rethy.
Aug. 14, Sun.
Just ab't 4 Betty heard a car trying to get up the
hill so we walked down it was by the dispensary & was 2

records. Justin went with the radio message & will bring
the mail. Not many at service but had a good sermon by
Matayo.
Aug. 15, Mon.
The Kenya ladies (Faber and Birmingham) left after
lunch which we had ready for the four too but they drove to
the hotel & had lunch there then came on here. Now are
settled in their rooms. Mas. put lights on & now one
goes with me to turn them off.
Aug. 16, Tues.
Worked at couch cover of green & yellow blocks.
Ladies are putting jig saws together. One more night to put
out lights – then Cl will, at least I hope they come Thur.
Lots of excitement at Rethy tonight.
Aug. 17, Wed.

us perhaps Cls can get them tomorrow. It's raining but must
turn the lights off – 9:30 & girls still at jug puzzles.
Have been thinking much of the graduation & remembering
last yr. Bet J & B are too. Will we be a whole family
tomorrow night?
