drove us to Idlewild & Mr Henry brot Cls. (Cls plane
left ab’t
11:30. See record at back of diary.) At the plane office we
found a
brown bag of letters - 75. from Texas folks for all three of
us. Our
plane left at 3:15 - 10 of us and not very many others so we
spr’d
out & took seats at windows. All are pretty tired so
slept
pretty well. Gas smell during night was bad.
Wed.
Aug. 28 Brussells
Got
to Brussells ab’t 8 - COLD! off the plane & to the hotel
- not
included in Sabena ticket - at Hotel Albert - 7th
floor! And we discovered Billys camera was missing. Gl &
Faiths room
was down the hall from us. Gl. left it with other things on
the bed
& did not lock the door. so there’s nothing to
be done
ab’t it. (to the back)
Thur.
Aug. 29 to Stanleyville ‘57
Found
Cls plane left earlier - so they got away before 12 & we
abt 1. Just after or ab’t dark we landed at Athens. then off
again for
Khartoum ab’t 8 tomorrow & then on to Stan. At Athens
they
gave us post cards to write home - all stamped - so we wrote
&
posted them there.
Fri.
Aug. 30 Stan. on to Bunia
Sara
& I at Sabena hotel. Got here at 10 A.M. and hoped to
get on to
Bunia but the plane doesn’t go til tomorrow at 6:30. While
waiting
for suit cases to come from plane - Mr McMillen came &
said we
were all to go to their place for dinner. out of Stan about
10 mi. He helped Ray get the car. We saw it at the port
& so we got in
& went out to McMillens in it.
Sat.
Aug. 31 Bogoro
Plane
didn’t leave til 9 because of fog at Paulis. - We were
called (by
phone) at 5 so had quite a wait. A crowd from Nyankundi
& Lolwa
were at the port to see Mary Deans off & the children -
so nice
to see them all. Stoughs too were there. Dr. Bob &
family - are
here at Harters. So nice to be here. Wonder if all ours are
at
Lolwa.
[from
back of diary] Aug. - returning to Af. Praise God for His
goodness. After the wonderful time at Placentia when all
families were
together for 2 wks. Then separated and again met when we
gathered in
N.Y. for the plane to Brussels & Africa. It all went as
per
schedule and so we can scarcely realize we are here.
The
sad part ab’t the stay in Brussels was that Billy’s camera
was
stolen from their room. and I was disappointed to not see
our
students there and Paul Hurlburt Jr.
Cl.
& Gl left an hour before we did. Then our first stop was
Athens
and there we wrote cards home. The Sabena Co furnished. Down
again
at Khartoum and now we were in Africa & it seemed very
much like
home - but we had still another hop to Stanleyville where
the first
thing was our new Volkswagen was parked ready for us. and so
on.
When
Sara & I reached Bunia and saw all the folks we thot
they had
come to see us!!! but Mary Deans took the plane for
Leopoldville &
home and may retire. because Loraine may need her. It was
very nice
to see all the folks & nice too to have the quiet wk end
at
Bogoro. Dr. Bob S & family were at Stoughs. so we had
nice visit
with them.
Ray
came before breakfast. They ate then we left & got to
Rethy by
4:30 or so. Com. want Ray to stay in big dorm but he feels
he can’t
so we are settling in little dorm. What a wonderful Savior
we have. How He has provided and blest beyond our asking!

After
most of us went to our rooms last night there was a great
rumpus for
a native was in Joy Ws room & so Mr B. & Ray &
the big
boys ran after him & Mr B. got him. They pommeled him
good &
took him to the chief - but we hear he got away. he has been
doing
stealing for some time so we hope the police that are after
him will
get him. Virginia had an awful nightmare - Ray had to take
her up &
rouse her wide awake before she’d quiet down. She &
Pauline
have been in bed all day with fever.
Sun.

not
come back here. The thief was seen in Djugu yesterday &
police
are after him. Sara led young folks mtg & there’s cake

social time afterward. 5 little folks down now - but not

[from
back] Dec. 31. ‘57. What a wonderful wonderful year! How
could I
ever have an anxious thot? But I DID! May the Lord forgive
me. I
really couldn’t see how I could ever feel as good again as I
do
now. Praise Him. I weigh 120 and but for this sore throat I
have, I
feel fine. The cold I took at mid. term picnic I still have
-
sometimes better & sometimes very disagreeable &
cough.
After
seeing the boys in June everything seemed to open up and
moved fast
and according to schedule. I flew across to N.Y. and from
then on,
all has been as planned with a lot of extras thrown in -
being the
“exceedingly above” all we could ask or think. Glory to God.
The future is bright with his promises.
