WHAT IS THIS COMING YEAR?

It is a door,
By which we reach new fields
Of service for our God and fellow
             man:
A door by which we can
       Explore
       Wide spheres of usefulness
       Our world to bless;
And reap the sheaves God’s Word
             of witness yields.

It is a task
Set by the Master of our souls,
A little part of our life’s work:
       And so we ask
       The holy wisdom, which alone
             controls
       Our labor, teaching what and
             where to sow:
That the year, at its end,
May show God’s glory and man’s
             profit blend.

It is a book,
With many pages and as yet all
             white,
       On which to write
The history of thought, and deed,
             and word
In this new group of days.
       We pray Thee, Lord,
       As Thou shalt look
Upon the book, when written o’er,
may all be to Thy praise.

                        - William Olney.

IN THE BEGINNING, GOD

Key Note                Gen. 1-1

Another year has ended,
             For some it is the last;
       Whatever be its record,
             We cannot change the past.
       But stretching out before us
             The New Year lieth fair;
God help us to be careful
             What shall be written there.

“But this one thing I do. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
         - Phil. 3, 13-14.             [in pencil] 1921

Thur. Jan. 1

Hardly supposed I’d be right here - Russellville - and under same conditions as last yr. waiting for Gl’s baby. Only this year we are so full of praise for the Lords undertaking for Cl & Gl. and we are ready to go out as soon as health & the needed money are provided. It’s cold too today - not thawing but freezing. Mary Ellen was here to dinner. Scotty & Mildred left right afterward.

Fri. Jan. 2

Gl. called me before 5. & they left at once and by 7:30 Richard Wendell was here. 9 lbs. 10 oz. Mother T. & I called on her. Took her beautiful red rose buds. & an azalea. Says she feels fine & does look well. Having a baby isn’t very hard work these days. They put you under & when you come out of it there’s the baby. The children were fine. Faiths nose still runs. Got out ab’t 65 announcements.

Sat. Jan. 3

We took the children & went to the hospital ab’t 10. After dinner I finished ironing. Frances cleaned. Twas such a lovely P.M. Cl. had the children out a lot. After bathing them and putting to bed Cl went to hospital. but both soon were crying & we had a time getting them quiet. Cl. staid til 9: about.

Sun. Jan. 4

Another beautiful day. Billy went to S.S. & Cl went to hospital & then church - so Faith & I had it quiet. Mother had shop work til noon. Just as we were finishing dinner Scotty, Mildred & her Mother came. They will be returning Wed. Wrote some letters as Cl & B went to hospital again. Mother T watched Faith. We are much like last yr. only 1 mo. early.

Mon. Jan. 5

Sent wash & I did several pieces here. Baked sugar cookies & put raisins in. Frances is not feeling at all well & all our colds continue. Dr. says Gl can come home Wed. Cl. goes to Siloam Sprgs tomorrow by bus so it takes him all day. Then speaks twice on Wed. & returns Thur. I guess. Ward order came today.

Tues. Jan. 6

Ironed all A.M. Mother T staid home & swept all over & dusted & was going to sew this P.M. then they needed her at the shop! I wrote Alberts & that’s all I did but mended a little. Seemed the children needed me so much. Cl left early. Mother T. is sleeping in their room tonight.

Wed. Jan. 7

Expected Gladys & baby all A.M. but didn’t get here til 3:30. Billy was very excited. Baby is a bouncer & doesn’t look like any one - but himself. Telegram fro Cl. to say he will be home Fri. Faith & Billy had hard time going to sleep. Scotty & Mildred here for the night. Baby is crying & seems hungry so we’ve made up a formula as Gl’s nipples are so sore she must use the shield & he can’t get much.

Thur. Jan. 8

This yr. I have cot in breakfast room and it’s so nice. Today wasn’t too bad but last night was hard on Mother T. Baby cried a lot. he has supplementary feed & eats 2 times as much as a baby his age should. Mother took Billy with her both A.M. & P.M. She took wash too & it got dry. and we are thankful. Baby cried some but not much when he got enuf to eat.

Fri. Jan. 9

Cl. came ab’t 4:30. Had 7 callers this P.M. and 2 this A.M. Mother T had to go to work all day as her helper, J.D., is sick. We got on OK. Baby is very good if he gets enuf to eat. Parcel from Aldens came - got everything I ordered. Also $20. Xmas presents from different folks. Cl. got check for 125. at Siloam. Co writes John Brown says he will send the $600. - but hasn’t yet.

Sat. Jan. 10

Just one of those days with no time for rest yet nothing much to show for it. By the time baby is bathed & Gl too & bed changed & some washing done & ironing & picking up after Faith & feeding her & changing ab’t 40 times & Gl’s trays done - & pudding made for dinner & pie baked for tomorrow - Faith bathed. Cl took care of Billie. Aunt Hattie, Eloise & Genevieve called. Now a bath & to bed. BUSY day tomorrow for Mother T. because

Sun. Jan. 11

(cont.) of funeral of a friend. at 1:30. Mother was up at 4. Bill by 6. and then I got break. for us. They were late to dinner too. but came & they went back for funeral. Cl. went too. Crowds of folks & lots of flowers. Mother made ab’t 35. At 4 Cl. went to Van Buren to speak. I’m sleeping with Gl. til he gets back.

Mon. Jan. 12

Gl. sat up a while this P.M. & eve for supper. Aunt Hattie & Uncle Bert & Eloise & Geraldine were here. We had dinner. Very good. I baked apple dumplings for dessert. pie crust with ½ apple wrapped in. Cl. showed all his pictures. They will prize those of the children in later yrs. Pretty tired tonight.

Tues. Jan. 13

How happy we are this yr. God did work so wonderfully for us. and we are looking to Him again for the money we need for passage & support. and still some out fit. He has always been so faithful. He will again supply. Ironed. Got a new start at the afghan with a larger hook & think it much better.

Wed. Jan. 14

Today I spoke to Cl. ab’t making a date with a dentist. but we haven’t yet. I’m so sick to my stomach. I’d like to spit up but can’t. Gl. was dressed this PM. Billy was so pleased to have her dressed. Letter today from Bells says they are booked on first boat in Apr. to Matadi. So glad. We are still waiting for the Lord to work for us. and He will.!

Thur. Jan. 15

Cl. got some lumber for crating the beds. He also got a heater & put into the car. That looks like we take Faith with us. Gl. felt much better today. A Mrs Schinn called & we had P.M. tea. Billy, as usual tried to pull off all sorts of stunts. Baked cookies & ginger bread. Crocheted a bit - it’s much prettier & better all way round - so are ravelling the former work.

Fri. Jan. 16

It’s been cloudy all day so we didn’t send the wash but will tomorrow. It’s colder than yesterday & radio says will get colder yet. Wrote some letters. Mother T brot Gl. lovely sweaters - one for below, red with black stripes & upper one plain red. Very pretty. & will be so comfy in N.Y. Still no word of money. O Lord how long must we wait! Nice letter from Ray.

Sat. Jan. 17

Those long letters I had to write last yr or thot I did. Anyway it helpt me at the time. but how easily & wonderfully the Lord worked it all out & He will again. Nothing is too hard for Him. Praise His name. $4,000 is as nothing when “the cattle … & all silver & gold are mine”. Baked & cooked up apples for sauce but burned the peelings that I wanted for jelly.

Sun. Jan. 18

Singular [arrow drawn to previous yr. Laura Willis Harris died while riding in a car] today Helen H. wrote Paul Uhlinger, Geo. Kevorkian & Miss Sill all died in a crash between Katwa & Rutchuru. Makes us all so sad. Gurney & children have just returned to Africa. What a happy time our folks over there are having. These last so young & so well trained. How hard to understand. Can’t. Only trust. Mrs K. is expecting a baby. All staid home. Mother had work. Bill went all day.

Mon. Jan. 19

O dear! the way gets darker. Ventnor can’t take children - so what shall we do? Office sent me some old letters - written ‘13 & ‘14 & I’ve been reading them. so I’m not all here. Washed my hair. Have dentist date the 29th. Cl & Gl. the 26th. We wonder can we stay at the home if we haven’t our money yet? How we do need His guidance!

Tues. Jan. 20

When we awoke it was snowing but soon stopt & now all is melted. Quite a nice crowd of women out. and I enjoyed speaking to them. Mother T went with me. Canned a few more apples. Got no letters nor did I get any written. This is the night of funnies “Amos & Andy”- “Fibber Magee & Molly” are the best. Just ab’t noon the dentist called & said could I come at 2:30. Was so sorry to miss it.

Wed. Jan. 21

Got a letter from Agnes tonight. Seemed to take so long to do every thing - but did get ironing done. & jelly made also pudding for dinner & jello for children. Several ladies called to see Gladys. Faith had a hard time going to sleep - hardly slept all day. She’s changing so fast these days.

Thur. Jan. 22

Yes, we agreed last yr. [arrow drawn to previous yr. reading Dr. Gray’s “The Holy Spirit in Doctrine & Life”] & we still do. I’m sure our Com. did not understand what A.G. doctrine is. But that’s past. Tonight I got the checks for $700. from Co. Bless her. & this noon the way bills for 4 boxes sent freight - almost $25. Now I’m sure Cl’s money will soon be in too. and the rest of mine. This, is only ab’t ½. Bill took Cl & me to hear Philharmonic Choir of Kansas Wesleyan Univ. Salina, Kan. ‘Twas very good.

Fri. Jan. 23

Cl. got another basket of apples. Winesaps this time & so-o-o good to eat. Want to fill rest of jars. Made apple dessert. Finished basting hems in sheets & pillow tubing. Mother T will hemstitch. Wrote some. Plenty more to ans. Hung wash out & it froze before we c’d get pins in. Rain water pipe is frozen again - it’s so very cold. Glad we aren’t travelling now.

Sat. Jan. 24

Baked coffee cake. Canned a few apples. baked pumpkin pies. also oatmeal cookies. but didn’t iron. Crocheted some & held the baby quite a bit. Picked up Frances’ sweater from my bed & found the egg Cl. brot in, in her pocket. She surely helps herself to lots of things. I wish I didn’t always find ‘em.

Sun. Jan. 25

Awakened to find a beautiful white world. Cl & I were going to church but Mother was ready to go to dinner by 11:30 so we didn’t go. Dicky enjoyed his visit - he slept all the time. Had a fine dinner. and they enjoyed the snaps I had. It’s not so cold but the pipe is still frozen. Mother & Bill had to leave early. We staid til after 4. It was Smiths - who have large peach orchards.

Mon. Jan. 26

Mother T staid at the shop all night as she had 4 funerals. She is very tired tonight. Took wash today & had dried too. Cl went to dentist & Gl. went along & shopped. I kept Faith & baby. F. is showing spunk so has to be punished. She wont keep still during prayers. Cl has punished her twice. Wrote some letters.

Tues. Jan. 27

Bill got a phone call last night that Grandma Scott had passed away. Mrs. T’s mother. He didn’t tell her til morning. She staid here all A.M. as there were several phone calls from Tulsa. Funeral there Thur. A.M. here, Fri A.M. so I will have my date with the dentist at 9. Thur. Colder tonight - pipe frozen again. Ironed. Aunt Hattie here for supper & help make plans for funeral.

Wed. Jan. 28

Mother & Bill didn’t come to dinner til 2 then Mother staid. I baked apple dumplings for dinner. then this eve Toll house cookies and apple sauce cake. Gl. iced & put it together. Tomorrow night the whole crowd from Tulsa will be here so there’s more baking to do tomorrow. Made apple sauce too & Miss Elsie & another lady called. We ordered lotion & powder. Uncle Ed sent Cls $100. for helping N.Y. expenses - Bless him.

Thur. Jan. 29

Dentist cleaned & filled 2 - took 6 Xrays. Bros. Leonard, wife & twins & Ira came. Then on the train with the body were Grandpa & Norma’s husband. Now at almost 11. Scottys & Don & Ana Merle & husband & Gary. Don & wife & 2 children. & L.C. who is Ira’s oldest son. They scatter all over to sleep. & all meet here at 9:45 tomorrow to go to the funeral home. They saw Grandma she looks very nice. Ruth Marie came by train.

Fri. Jan. 30

Ghandi was killed at a pr. mtg. A busy day. Eloise came & helpt with the children. 3 others besides ours. I was busy trying to get a deep dish apple pie baked. Everyone was here by 9:45. Funeral home autos came & all left by 10:10 or so & were back before 12. Quite a number ate here. Aunt Hattie got her eats & all staid. This P.M. most went either to Tulsa or L.R. Grandpa S. & Uncle Ulius are still here - all tired. Twas midnight last night before all lights were out.

Sat. Jan. 31

Scottys, Dons & Ana Merles all came back from L.R. for late dinner. and are all staying here tonight - a mattress on the floor etc etc. Gl. is very tired tonight & so is every one. Grandpa is staying at Aunt Hatties. Mother T. has to sleep at the shop as she has to be there early. lots to do for tomorrow. A birthday card for Faith from Co & a nice letter for me saying their S.S. want to help me with col. for 2 mo!

Sun. Feb. 1

Some of the crowd were up til 2:30 A.M. Mother slept at shop. All had breakfast, and then after waiting for one another they left for Tulsa so only Grandpa was here for dinner & we had so much left over it didn’t take much work to get it. Quiet day. Cl spoke to young folks. Gl & Billy went to mtg too. Mrs. McI. says we may stay a wk with them in Miss. apartment!

Mon. Feb. 2

We are “keeping to our post & watching His signals”. The check from Edward, the offer of Gl’s uncle to get Cl. all sorts of auto parts at ½ price, and Co’s letter saying the women are sending me a bit of money to help along - all are signals He is leading. Just how & when we shall go hasn’t been made plain yet. They took children for pictures. Grandpa Scott left by train. Took movies of Faith & her birthday cake - with light form spot light. Big wash. mostly dry.

Tues. Feb. 3

Typed contents of boxes that Co sent. and am beginning the History. Office wants original so I’m making a copy for us. Some girls called & took Billy to Telephone Office - etc. Took more pictures of Faith. Movies only. Very cloudy & rainy all day. These movies took with spot lights on. Talked a bit ab’t plans for leaving. Nothing yet seems clear.

Wed. Feb. 4

Typed at History but Ruth Marie needs her typewriter so we have sent it to her. If I don’t get time to type it some place else I’ll write it long hand or let it go. Letter from Ray written Jan 18. Council want Cls to go to Kacengu & me too if I want to but I don’t. Ru is much nicer for guests. Letter from Davis saying only “Don’t come” but replied nothing ab’t innoculations.

Thur. Feb. 5

Finished with the dentist now. he filled another small one today. Charged $28 which is reasonable, considering all he did. Gl. drove truck & did shopping while I was at dentists - first time she has tried it. We talked plans. Cl. has written to Midwest to see if he can help there. No need for both of us here. Jim Bell writes urging me to come there.

Fri. Feb. 6

Canned 3 more qts. of apples & made jelly of peels. Baked Toll house cookies. also plain cake to eat with strawberries (frozen - from Mrs Smith). Billy went to Morrilton with Bill on biz. and they saw a bad freight train wreck near Atkins. 15 cars piled up. no one hurt. We all went to Elsie Torrance’s for supper (or dinner) turkey etc. Yum.

Sat. Feb. 7

Frances left this P.M. for another place to work. It’s a relief to have her gone. Gl. found 3 grape fruit, 2 eggs & Billys pop gun with her things. Kathryn Scott, Leonard’s daughter came this eve & her cousin. Kathryn gives a musical recital tomorrow P.M. Ruth M. & family came out this eve. Also Aunt Hattie for supper. Mother T & I did dishes. Boys had a wild time before we finally got all to bed. Bells want me to come there. They’ll take me to Brooklyn!

Sun. Feb. 8

Seems queer without Frances - but very nice. Children all went to S.S. Mother had to go to shop early & must again tomorrow. The recital was fine. She surely can get over the keys. Ruby came & staid with the children while we were at recital. R.M. & family went home. Mary Opal, coz. of Katherine, hasn’t missed S.S. for 14 yrs. Wrote Bells if Cl. doesn’t go to Chi. I’ll come to them.

Mon. Feb. 9

Canned apples, 4 qts & have juice ready for jell. Today Mother T was so busy all day. Left at 4 & just hustled home to dinner & back & must again tomorrow. But she would wash dishes tonight. Then while she soaked her feet she held Dicky - he got restless & Cl & Gl went to Aunt Hatties & brot her sewing machine. Also took my Zenith aid to Mrs Torrance to try out. hers doesn’t help her much. A Sonatone & cost $200.!

Tues. Feb. 10

We had prayer around the table this morn as we were alone. A letter from Mr. Frutchy says he will be glad to have us go to their apt. in Media but there may be some one else wanting it now. We can’t tell til we hear from Chi. Made 3 glasses large jelly. and steamed a suet pudding & ironed & went down town this P.M. with Cl. tho I haven’t my aid. Wonder how it worked for Mrs Torrance.

Wed. Feb. 11

Seemed to be busy all A.M. just cleaning up. It’s been a dreary misty day all day. Mother & Bill went early again & we were alone so again had pr. This P.M. Cl & Billy took Gl. & babe to clinic. Babe has gained almost 5 lbs.! He is 14 lb. 9 oz.- gaining ab’t 2 oz. a day. Quite a record. I got a few letters off. Cl brot my aid. I’m surely grateful for it. It does help so much.

Thur. Feb. 12

Rained hard most all A.M. Gl. Faith & I got 1st typhoid shot. then Cl & Billy went. Faith didn’t like that nurse at all. Billy never winced. Mother didn’t come home to supper. was at biz. womens club some where. Gl. sewed. it’s so nice having the machine here. Aunt Hattie’s. Got couple of letters off. Looked in Wards Cat. for things we still need. May have them send a freight order.

Fri. Feb. 13

Baked an Apple Crispy for Ruby for valentine as she kept the children last Sun. P.M. The pyrex dish is hers too. Also baked one for Mother. They didnt get home til 9. so many corsages to make for a dance tonight. Then weddings etc tomorrow so they must go early. Cl. ran off the color films of Christmas Faith & her dog & her birthday taken by lamp light. Gl & I went to Wrold Day of Prayer. All read - no spontaneous prayers.

Sat. Feb. 14

Some big doings at Tech & Mother & Bill were busy all day. A.M. mail brot air mail from Jim to know if I was coming they wanted to get off to Florida. I wired I’d come Tues. and then got a wire from them sent early today to say they were going today - so I’ll wait a week & then go to Bells - if Cls will be coming to Florida. No word from Chi. Jim’s letter was very slow coming.

Sun. Feb. 15

Again quite warm & pleasant. Cl. Gl. Billy & Dicky all went to church. Mother worked til noon. She & I were going to church tonight but I feel so feverish & chilly that Gl. went & I’m going to bed with hot water bottle. Western Union said they delivered my wire to Jim, to his bro. so we had to send another to say I’m not coming or the bro. might have gone to meet me. Such a mix up.

Mon. Feb. 16

Sunny so wash dried nicely. SO thankful A.I.M. is sending them [arrow drawn to previous yr. when Claudon & Gladys were considering joining Assemblies of God Mission] & we hope very soon too. Cl finished packing bed box. I have couch from porch in my room. Billy went with Bill for sand all A.M. This P.M. Cl took Faith & him for a walk back thro the woods to the stream where there’s a pool. Billy threw rocks into the pool & then tumbled in - he was soaked - hope it wont make his cold worse. Mildred Smith called.

Tues. Feb. 17

Finally finished ironing ab’t supper time. Cl got 2 boxes (large ones) all nailed up. Letter from Mr Frutchy to say the house will be ready after the 23rd. I want to take Faith with me. but Cl. wants to wait to hear from Chi. before they leave. So I’ll go to Bells next week. & perhaps to Br’klyn with them - if I get more money. If Cls go to Florida I may too. Millers & Imhoffs still wait for money. Several single ladies going on 20. Linnells ready too.

Wed. Feb. 18

Got our second shots for typhoid today. This P.M. Gl & I took Faith & Dicky & went calling on some of her friends. but were not very successful. Road was too muddy to go to Mildred Smiths. Edna West was home & we had a nice visit. Then to Kathryns but only her parents & children were there & Faith was fretting so we came home. $40 from Office Thank God. Tried to write Bells ab’t stopping with them.

Thur. Feb. 19

I’m a bit late in leaving this yr - like the weather. [arrow drawn to previous yr. this date - was snowing] for I’m expecting to go to Bells next Wed. at least I’ve written them so. Lots can happen before. Gl & I went down town - each got a pr. of shoes and also got some for M.A. & Betty. & John’s coat. All very nice. Cl is hauling rock for a stone wall along drive into basement garage. Baked cookies this A.M. Wrote Rays.

Fri. Feb. 20

Al writes she wont call long distance - too much extra expense this mo. Made apple sauce & jelly and a cobbler which was good. Got several letters off. It’s so cold today and Faith kept coming with her coat & wanting to go outside - saying by-by. Bill may go to L.R. next Tues. & I can go with him.

Sat. Feb. 21

The jelly didn’t jell. am so surprised. Shall boil it up again. Made Swedish Tea Ring and Aunt Hattie & Eloise came to Tamale supper & the tea ring & coffee. Lights went out ab’t 6 and didn’t come on til 9. just as they were leaving. Tried to get on with candles only. Wonder if Billy got home.

Sun. Feb. 22

A yr. ago! I’ve lived it all over again. [arriving at Placentia CA, greeted by 3 sisters at beginning of furlo] Cl & I went to M.E. Church. Quiet P.M. so got some letters written. I went to service with Mother T. Quite noisey tonight by spells. Card from Cora saying Christine had stroke last Wed. Left side paralyzed. & she was still unconscious. May the Lord take her soon - she is so ready to go. Sunny but cold wind. Is this my last Sun. in this lovely home? God knows.

Mon. Feb. 23

Bill’s pal & his wife were here to supper. Had wash done. it dried some but not entirely. Gl. is making my suit skirt longer. she got some material that is pretty good match. Cls had letter from Mr. Tabor at Media - saying they were staying til Mar. 9 & hoped Cls would come before they left. So Cl. wrote they would leave here a wk from tomorrow.

Tues. Feb. 24

Got last typhoid shots & again it was raining hard. Stopt at shop & got “frogs” & a crane. Mother gave ‘em to me. Ironed this P.M. & tried to pack but didn’t do much til this eve. & then Miss Elsie & Bernice Burris came & now it’s 10:30 & still some packing to do. Raining hard & as Bill can’t get shrubs we go in his car & all go - so glad if we can [get?] letter & wire from Bells saying come.

Wed. Feb. 25

(Written Sat.) Bill took us all to L.R. It rained lots all day. Ruth M. gave Cl, Bill & me early dinner & they took me to bus station. Left on time & got to Memphis on time. Changed to another bus - and I had a dish of soup & an apple. Leaving M. the bus was full & I shared a seat with young mother & baby

Thur. Feb. 26

(cont) ab’t like Faith. Made me realize I could have managed Faith very well. Got to Birmingham at 1 A.M. Changed again - each change required rechecking my suit case. Slept some using my sweater & the afghan I’m crocheting at to keep my neck & ears warm. Stopt for break. at Montgomery.

Fri. Feb. 27

Changed at Dothan then got to Bainbridge on time but no suit case. I had check so they are tracing it but didn’t get it til this P.M. (Fri) we went to enquire again & while there it came in. How I’ve slept. and am eating too much. I’ll be gaining again. Do wish I had Faith so they c’d pack better. We expect them in another wk. Bells have a lovely little place here. double story brick.

Sat. Feb. 28

Jim is off for Athens for wk. end speaking. What did Agnes &I do today? I had bath & washed undies before dinner. Wrote at a letter and crocheted some. Then after P.M. rest we walked to P.O. and took my watch to repair place as it stopt & would not move. He showed us it was dirty so he cleaned it for $3.50 & I got it at 6. during that time we visited with Sara, Buck’s wife & she took us to town & home.

Sun. Feb. 29

A quiet day. Jim’s bro. Buck came for us & we went to the M.E. Church. Heard a good sermon on “Love”. I had made an apple crispy. & we had a good dinner & then rest & then went to see a sick woman. She loves the Lord so it was not hard to visit. Buck & wife called ab’t 6. I imagine this has been a busy day for Gl.

Mon. Mar. 1

Letter from Cl. enclosing one from Lora to say Christine went Home Tues the 24th. Thank God. Cls were still expecting to leave tomorrow. So this has been a hectic day & how I wish I could have taken care of the children. We went to Ladies Circle mtg at 3. and had such a nice time. Agnes planted a few flower seeds. The folks who rent this from them called. Very nice christian folks. Some one sent a gift of a chicken & frozen peaches.

Tues. Mar. 2

Jim’s birthday. He got home ab’t 5 and we had fried chicken, hot biscuits, rice and I baked a marchino cherry cake but it was the flattest failure. I think the Bak. Pow. must not have been good or else the oven not right. It’s good but not light like it should be. Copied at Kenya history most all P.M. Another letter from Lo.

Wed. Mar. 3

We were just sitting down to oyster stew supper & Jim said - “Well, when Cls come we’ll get a qt.” and they drove in. Surely made very good time. and are very tired as they got up at 4 A.M. Faith & I sleep in Ag’s bed. Billy on camp cot in hall. Cls in my bed. So nice to see them all again.

Thur. Mar. 4

All packed but last things. Got Betty’s black shoes - hope she will like them. Cl. showed his pictures this eve. Jim’s bro. Buck & wife came. and Mr Crawford the renter. but Riz & wife didn’t come. I made jello pie. We at one for dinner & had the other after the pictures & ice cream.

Fri. Mar. 5 Media [Minneola, FL]

We got away by 9. Cl & Billy in the truck & the rest in the car. We had such a nice trip - twas cloudy & showered some. We ate at a filling station - had coffee at a Cafe near. This is a very nice pace. Cls in big house. I’m with Miss Slater. All look very natural & well but Mr McK. he looks awful but is really better.

Sat. Mar. 6

Was back & forth. Cls washed & I helpt. and ironed this P.M. Dicky doesn’t like his change of diet from jersey cow to Pet milk. Spits up such a lot. Miss Slater is same careful cook as always and Tabors are to eat with us tomorrow so she is busy still. most 9. How we do talk.

Sun. Mar. 7

A rainy day. but all went to church & S.S. Tabors came here to dinner so M. didn’t go. & Gl staid with babies. Tabors left right after dinner. and we had d good rest then I went to see ab’t arrangements at the big house. M. didn’t want me to go til tomorrow. We will have lots of room. Wrote Rays. Mrs Tabor told of her son’s first romance - had just had a letter from him. He is interested in broad casting like Byrd.

Mon. Mar. 8

I have the whole big apt. all to myself. I’m lost. there’s so much room. But it’s so lovely. Miss S. would have me for dinner to help eat what was left. We washed quite a large wash & got fairly dry. We’ve ironed some. The minister - Mr Duffy called to arrange ab’t meetings. We go tomorrow for vaccination. I may go with Mrs Nelson too but not sure.

Tues. Mar. 9

Rained hard ab’t 9. Then cleared & was sunny & windy. McKs washed & it all dried in a hurry. At 3 we all went to Claremont & got first, vaccination - then typhus needle. Billy was very brave & tho the tears came he just laughed. Not so Faith. she screamed. Dicky got none so slept thro it all. Making out a tentative Ward order?!

Wed. Mar. 10

Mended & did little things around the house. Made apple sauce of last Ark. apples. McKs spent eve here. so like old times. This is a very nice place & good fellowship. Washed hair & had a shower. So much warmer today. Letter from Al & $2. So now I’m going to send check for Cl’s alumni fund. he doesn’t want to keep it up.

Thur. Mar. 11

Rainy this morning but cleared. Couldn’t wash as the stove pipe wasn’t fixed so couldn’t heat water. I went with Mrs Nelson to Bapt church. She got sick - but sat in car til after mtg. I’m to speak on the 23rd. My aid does not work right. All came to pr. mtg at 3:30. Seemed like Kijabe pr. mtg. Mrs. Nelson didn’t come. Wrote Al. Beth’s Alice 6 almost stept on moccasin snake last eve. They killed it.

Fri. Mar. 12

Washed a big wash and all got dry before the rain came. At 3 I went with McK’s to do shopping. Got over $6. worth but Cls insisted on giving me $5. so I’m still not even. Tonight Mr McK. showed his pictures at Beths where friends from Wis. had come. They are wintering near here. Cl & I went.

Sat. Mar. 13

Ironed all A.M. & Gl this P.M. We had so much. Read letters today from Ken D. and a very late one from Dr. Blakeslee ab’t the condition of things at Githumu. it is very serious & only God can take care of it. How we pray He may give victory to His people & down the enemy & his followers. Cold today & tonight. Radio predicts frost in north Fla.

Sun. Mar. 14

Gl. went to S.S. with Billy. Cl & Mr McK & Miss Slater went later. Cl. spoke. Another Miss. from French West was to speak tonight but got a call some place else. Gl, Mrs. McK. &I went. He asked Gl. to speak next Sun. morn. Wants me some later time. I hope I’ll be gone tho! How well I remember last yr. [Gladys not changing her beliefs and Beth in bed for a week with bad ankle.] & now Gl. is AIMer & Beth is in India.

Mon. Mar. 15

Lovely sunny day. Beth washed. Cl & Frank put part of cement floor in the work shop. McKs asked us over for waffle supper. They were given 2 irons on a tray - by the children & so we had plenty & a few left over. Cl brot Billy & Faith home ab’t 8 & Gl & I with Dicky came at 9. We had such a lovely chatty time.

Tues. Mar. 16

Washed & partly ironed - went to Clermont & got 2 more shots. Billy has always been so brave & didn’t cry but it was too much today & he yelled & fussed. Tho he had been saying he wanted “only 1 shot”. but he couldn’t take it. Latest word ab’t Mrs Ostroth is that she is almost normal again [arrow drawn to previous yr. when she was institutionalized for being violent] & goes ab’t with him. Thank God.

Wed. Mar. 17

Gl. has been so miserable all day. chills & nausea. her arm troubled all night too. Cl. aches & feels badly but managed to help more with the children. I baked coffee cake & did quite a large ironing besides helping with the children so I’m tired but not achey like the rest. The fish the men caught in the pond were very good.

Thur. Mar. 18

Gl. feels somewhat better but not good yet. She isn’t much interested in the trip on Sat. & I know if I had known it is so far we wouldn’t have consented to go but we planned it all so feel we must not disappoint them. Cl, Gl & Mrs McK drove to Groveland & got lovely oranges .75 a bu. Mr McK. ab’t sick with a cold. Pr mtg here. Cl. led.

Fri. Mar. 19

Washed. Gl. went shopping - so I finished. then baked cookies. Guess we have finally decided to all go in Hendersen’s car & leave Dicky & Faith with Mrs. McK. I fear she will have her hands full. Gl. is feeling better. We eat break. at home but take a snack along for on the road. It’s 150 mi. down there.

Sat. Mar. 20

A full & happy day beginning at 4:30 but I didn’t hear the alarm so we hustled & were just ab’t ready at 6 when the Hendersons drove in. Stopt a bit before reaching there to eat a sandwich fearing it w’d be long to wait for dinner. but Aunt Jenny and Grdma Cook came by 12. All seem very natural only older. Had a very fine time. Donald brot his wife to see us & we had a nice chat. Then left & went to Bradenton Beach & children waded awhile. On way home went wrong every possible chance so got here ab’t 8. Babies were fine & so was Mrs. McK.

Sun. Mar. 21

I kept babies this A.M. as Gl. spoke. Then Beths came for dinner. We set table in the library. Had hamburgers & spagetti. & Beth’s baked beans & potato salad of yesterday. They staid a while & we lookt at pictures. Cl. showed pictures this eve. & I went. They took collection of 17.18 & a Mr. Norris gave him a check for 50. Mr. McK. is better. Miss Slater had a wire her bro. died suddenly.

Mon. Mar. 22

I’m praising God for answered pr. but it is mingled with sadness too - tho it should be all praise. A wire came today to say “Booked on S.S. Tarn. Apr 9 with Bells. Come north with them soon”. and so I’m getting letters off to say I’m booked. but Idon’t like leaving Cl’s. tho they are sure to come soon too. I do pray the way may open very soon for them. Got no shots. but will tomorrow A.M.

Tues. Mar. 23

Telegram from Bells. They come for me. but don’t yet know when. Got a shot & my arm hurts. Couldn’t find our med. reports so had to take a new blank. & now this eve Gl. found it back of day bed in dining room. Spoke to W.M.S. at Bapt. church. Mrs McK. Beth & Mrs Nelson were there. Crocheted at afghan for nothing else seemed interesting tho I’ve written quite a number - I still have some I should write.

Wed. Mar. 24

Still no word from Bells. I just expect them to drive in so I’m somewhat packed. A card at noon said Woodleys couldn’t come. he is ill. So we had tea any way. Mrs McK made lovely cup cakes. The tea ring was good too. Cl & Gl & Billy went to Leesburg Bapt. church. where the grocery man asked them to come 2 wks ago. Arm is better tonight but felt bum all day.

Thur. Mar. 25

And still no Bells & no word from them. They must be packing. Went with Mrs. McK & Beth to see some Baltimore ladies who know Sara & love her. Washed before we went & I ironed some before pr. mtg. Mrs. McK went to bed this P.M. with bad cold & pain in chest. They were to come for supper so he came alone & we had a nice visit.

Fri. Mar. 26

I might say almost the same today. [arrow drawn to previous yr. “another day gone and nothing to show for it”] No Bells yet & no word. Do wonder why no letter. Cl & Gl got last shots for tetanus today & paid up - only $10 for them. I pd $6 for mine, not so bad. Took some snaps. May be used for passport for the family if good enuf. Mr. Woodley is quite ill with heart attack.

Sat. Mar. 27

Gl. went to town & had her hair washed & fixed up. Looks nice. no letter at noon then this eve we got a wire ready to send & then found one at the office from Bells. They come by here Mon. I replied OK I’d be ready. Both Cl & Gl are feeling very miserable - but Cl seems worse this time. How we wish we knew when they will be coming. I had so hoped it would please God to let us go together. He knows, He loves, He cares.

Sun. Mar. 28

Easter Sun. and a lovely day after the wind & shower last night. really cold tonight. need extra blanket. Cl, Billy & I went to Bapt. church at Clermont. Cl. taught a class. Women gave me $10. Thank God. Gl & Mrs McK went to a funeral this P.M. so I kept busy with children & radio. First thing early we got the Moravian service from West Salem No. C. and several others later & orchestra at 3 to 4:30. So pretty.

Mon. Mar. 29 Colquitt.

They came ab’t 10:30 & we had almost finished washing. Gl. made sandwiches & coffee & we ate a bit then left. I did so hate to leave them behind. We made good time - stopt ab’t 3 & had hamburgers & stopt in Tallahassee. Then got here by 8. The car is new - have had it 1 wk. & gone 1000 mi. Mr. McK was very ill in the night so she called Cl. to call Frank who got Dr. It is pneumonia - but temp. was down this morning. Am in my same room. They seem to have lots of packing to do still.

Tues. Mar. 30

A day of last things for Bells. It is 10:20 & they are still not home. Things are mostly packed & we should get away in good time. I’ve written quite a number of cards & letters - but have still many more to do. Am sending for a pattern of knitted suit for Dicky.

Wed. Mar. 31 Atlanta

(Written Fri.) They packed & did last things til after 1 when we left for Atlanta. Stopt for several things enroute & got there a bit late for the service at which Jim spoke. Agnes & I also said a few words. The pastor Mr James & wife took me home with them & after a chat til most 11 we went to bed. ‘Twas raining so hard we could do little ab’t getting all we needed so I’m glad to have my brush & comb.

Thur. Apr. 1

I tried to get Bells to stay & let me come to Sloops by bus - but they would not. We finally left Atlanta ab’t 3 P.M. Stopt at Shelby for supper. Got to Sloops at midnight & could get no ans. from our knock so went on to find auto camp but after 2 hrs. found 1 bed. Jim in car. We were too tired to think if the bed was comfy. At 6 we were up & after going the wrong direction out of Salisbury

Fri. Apr. 2

[cont] we got onto 150 & then went past the houses - & finally got here by 7:40 for breakfast. Then said goodby & left - but in Salisbury looked up trains & decided I go by train tonight - so came back to Sloops for the day. First thing had a ¾ hr. nap. Then dinner then talked & looked at pictures. Will get the 8:10 train for N.Y. Both Nancy & Mother took me in & when I asked for a ticket he asked my name & gave me a Pullman & berth. Bells did it. I had a good rest.

Sat. Apr. 3

Thur. Apr. 8

I got up with headache & haven’t been feeling good all day & now things are moving doesn’t improve matters but it goes very quietly.

Sat. Apr. 17

Am writing this on Mon. 19th because I was pretty well down today. Did go out for lunch & tea but lay on couch rest of time. Read letters written for boat. How well I remember last year. [attending symposium at Glendale, CA] Lots of time now to “remember” things.

Sun. Apr. 18

Very rolling all day and an hr. after each taking of food it would be back up. Jim & Agnes are so solicitous & sympathetic. Have been thinking of Cls so much & most every thot a prayer that they may soon come.

Mon. Apr. 19

How well I remember a yr ago. [birthday party, Glendale CA] 4 P.M. Have been on deck for break & down to table for lunch & slept & read - but it’s getting pretty rolling again. Am going up on deck again - tried to write letters but too hard work. Eve. ate a bit of all 3 courses for dinner & am going to bed now - 8 P.M.

Tues. Apr. 20 [birthday]

I began by reading the sisters’ letters. Then after break - and I went to the table - & prayers we opened the parcels - a pr. of nylons from Gl. a towel from Mrs Winant, a book & tooth brush from Co. and from Prue Frost 3 boxes of lovely note paper - orchid - Cameo - birds - & 12 lovely flower cards. & a large beautiful birthday card. Then 15 birthday letters 2 with $5. & some with hankies all with love in them. Agnes told steward I had a birthday so there was a lovely large cake at supper & I wore my new checkered dress Agnes got me.

Wed. Apr. 21 Virginia May

Nothing very unusual happened all day. Opened Al’s letter which was from the bunch at the Hi School. Felt pretty groggy all day but better since supper. Jim walked 1 ½ mi around the deck. Sat in drawing room & turned on radio. Doesn’t work very well. but got Voice of Andes program in Spanish - hymns were lovely.

Thur. Apr. 22

Finished reading Mother Whittemore Modern Miracles - a wonderful book. The sea was so smooth - like oil had been poured on. We stopt for quite a while - don’t know why. The ship bobs of course but not so much & the chicken dinner tonight really tasted good. I give Jim most of my ice cream. They asked me to lead our pr. mtg tomorrow morn. Wrote Frank U.

Fri. Apr. 23

And now here I am going back. Thank God. Now when Cls get out wont we be a happy crowd. We are about half way by looks of the map. Wrote some. crocheted at doily - almost finished. Rougher tonight but I enjoy my meals more than a few days ago. 1 wk from one home & 1 wk more should be near my other home country.

Sat. Apr. 24

Made mistake in crocheting & had to go back & correct it. so I only finished now and still it isn’t right. Found a mistake ab’t ½ way back but wont take it out. Wrote some. This is the least exciting trip. We met one ship in the night. The girls said they saw one one day but Capt. said it was a cocoanut! They’re having lots of fun ab’t it.

Sun. Apr. 25

Wonder if Millers are getting off. Have prayed much for them & others. Jim spoke so well on Hebrews. Miss Stefan didn’t come. others all there. a young man of the crew attended. 3 girls & Ag. sang quartet very nice. Just as we dismissed Capt. called us to see Cape Verde Islands. very dim in haze. Looked rocky & mountainous. Wrote letters. Guess I’m homesick. I want my babies.

Mon. Apr. 26

Got 2 letters written. and started embroidering pillow case. Was in the cabin most of the day. Some saw porpoises but Agnes & I weren’t outside then. I helpt her some with knitting sock on 2 needles. it’s quite simple. We worded telegram to send to Lutete from Lobito for accomodations.

Tues. Apr. 27

Wrote Elfrieda. & others. Embroidered some. Am enjoying my meals even keeping apples down. Had good jello for dessert this eve. Read Edna’s and Carries letters today as marked. Folks are beginning to take quinine. Much warmer.

Wed. Apr. 28

Wrote more letters. & sorted them & arranged. I’ve still plenty to write. It’s rougher again. We are just past the corner of Af. and will cross the equator early in the morning. The constellations are so bright now as the moon doesn’t rise til late.

Thur. Apr. 29

Crossed the equator at 4:05 P.M. so the 4 that had never crossed got their diplomas at 8 this eve. ‘Twas lots of fun. Capt. was real funny. Miss Schulert’s wasn’t with the rest but came late all done up in waterproof wrapping & drippping wet. An officer brot it in in a bucket. We had cold drinks afterward. Ice cream for dessert. Keep fan on when we can’t open ports.

Fri. Apr. 30

Got so rough didn’t go out to supper. Agnes brot soup etc in. Wrote only one letter. Written next day when it was rough as ever. But it’s nice to think that before another week we’ll be on land. I led pr mtg.

Sat. May 1

Was down most all day. Didn’t give up any meals but might feel better if I did. Didn’t go to pr. mtg nor nothing. Head is bad so feel pretty punk. Don’t make good time these days as there’s a strong head wind on.

Sun. May 2

Down all day. Ate a little at table & have spit up all. and my head aches so much but - we get to Lobito tomorrow. Jim preached well & searching & girls sang lovely. Capt. attended. Mrs Murdock seems under cinviction. Paulita says she has accepted Jesus. - This was written at Lobito.

Mon. May 3

Got in to Lobito at 10:30. Mr. Murdock met his wife & daughter. At any rate this is Africa! It looks hot & dry - small hills back from the shore - & many flat buildings all along the coast. We girls all went for a walk after tea. ‘Twas lovely stepping on the solid ground again. I feel like a different person this eve. I really didn’t care & would have preferred to die - I thot last night. Unloading tonight - so hope to get away tomorrow.

Tues. May 4

Got away ab’t 9:30- were detained because one of the crew- rather young boy was drunk & didn’t want to come aboard. was brot back 3 times. Now we’ve been moving for ab’t an hr. and are out where we roll again. Agnes & Jim & I went down to get stamps & post cards. Jim got a hair cut. Met a Mr. Pontier. Bell’s cousin of S.A.G.M. and 2 ladies who are on their way home. Got some letters written & put these stamps on. Should get to Loanda by tomorrow eve.

Wed. May 5

Because of so much weight left at Lobito the engines shook the boat badly so no one slept very well. Got to Loanda ab’t 1. We got up from lunch & took our fruit (pears) and went on deck. We couldn’t tie up as there is no room. They unloaded some in lighters but will pull over in the morning as they have some very heavy things to unload.

Thur. May 6

All went on shore but me. Had short talk with Capt. & wrote & embroidered. finished second pillow case. Now if only I hadn’t packed the crochet thread I’d put the edge on them. I’m doing a little hand towel for Ag. Jim & Ag came back for dinner also Miss Grooters & Jessie Smith. Others only in time for supper. 2 Port. boys came from another boat & visited awhile.

Fri. May 7

My I do remember a yr. ago! [with sisters in Glendale, CA] And we still sit here waiting - a passenger boat came in & is tied up. Every body staid on board all day but Mr. Hartman. Yesterday Jim & Mr H. ate the girls’ cake at tea because they were ashore & today the girls were just dividing Mr. Hartman’s pieces when he came in. Jim had lovely radio music from Leo. That’s where Byrd gets his best programs he says.

Sat. May 8

Still here - but we really will get away tomorrow. The former Port. boys came again this eve. Miss Schulert is sick & Miss Stefan went ashore with 4th officer so Miss Weisenberg entertained the boys. Agnes & I sat with them too. We fixed up some dates with pecans & sugar & had with our tea - also figs. didn’t do it to celebrate but I’ve been thinking a lot ab’t 42 yrs ago.

Sun. May 9

W’at a day - anything but Sunday like. Stewardesses & Miss Stefan were ashore last eve with some of the officials. & then no boat came over so they sat in the lounge of another boat. We pulled to the pier & they came on ab’t 8:15. Miss Shulert is better. Men worked all day unloading - many cars & huge cases. Got away 5:15 and are making good time. Ag. is sorry to leave the boat - not so, I.

Mon. May 10 Matadi

Got here ab’t 2:30 and first thing saw Millers on the pier. They got here yesterday but off the boat today. A wire from Ray says come to Rethy. But how? 3 lovely letters from Gl. Mother’s Day card etc. One from Lo too & Swedish Mission folks met us & the 3 S.I.M. girls & Bells are out there. I’m rooming with Miss Stefan & Wiesenberger & Walden are across the hall. & Millers on 2nd floor. They have same room Bowyers had in Nov. ‘46. Will be getting things out of customs tomorrow. Mrs. Miller is all in for all driving thro. Imhoff says it’s tiresome.

Tues. May 11

Got all letters posted & got matriculated. There’s a new issue of stamps again. & air mail is only 10.50 now to States. Jim, Miller & I went to pier to see ab’t things & at first when looking in office books could find nothing. Later Jim went to warehouse & all had been unloaded. Gl’s dishes too. Cars are out & we hope to get lined up to get away. Big question still is for me by boat, plane or car? I’m very upset tonight - perhaps orangeade.

Wed. May 12

I went to the Bank with Mr. Burky & Ag came while we were waiting for my money. I got $300. in Congo money. That should do me til I get settled some place. I slept 2 hrs. this P.M. My tummy feels better this eve. Took another quinine. Don’t know if we will get away tomorrow. Wired Ray. Millers have had to cable for $2000. deposit on car. So must wait for that.

Thur. May 13

Wrote some. Had hard rain during break. Jim did every thing he could but can’t get our freight thro. Otraco says he will get it on to us as soon as possible. Millers must wait for the cable from home but we think we will go to Leo in the morning. I went to the Mission with Jim. Ag. & Jessie came with us for the ride. Said good by to Jessie.

Fri. May 14 Thysville

Left Matadi ab’t 8:30 - roads were very winding at first but mostly gravel - had lunch beside the road. ‘Twas good & helpt my tummy to feel better. No room at the hotel here so came to the Mission Protestant. Bapt. Eng. & Mr & Mrs Kingston - & 7 mo. old baby - very kindly are putting us up. We have come 143 mi. & they say another 120 to Leo.

Sat. May 15 Leo.

Left Kingstons by 7:30. & found roads very good for 50 mi. then sand but it had rained so wasn’t very bad. Just after lunch were held up by cars colliding - & no one could get by. Got here by 2:45. Bells have corner room & I’m in with 4 ladies. Haven’t seen any children. Read of plane crash 34 killed in Belgium. Mrs. Orhneman called on us. Very sweet. I feel much better.

Sun. May 16

Wire yesterday said Millers will be coming to Sona Bata Mon. which is a holiday. Jim wired them to meet us Wed. Shopping Tues. Attended service - but I don’t hear much - was sorry to miss out this eve when Mr. Orhneman told of his visit to Libenge where the plane crashed. 5 miss. & 2 native pastors killed besides 27 others - 13 can’t be found. bodies were blown to bits & scattered. Terrible!

Mon. May 17

And a holiday so no chance for shopping but we went to the zoo and then out to see the rapids. We washed a bit. Jim & Ag. were out to supper. Orhnemans were here. We had ice cream. I finished the book “The covered Wagon” & wrote the girls. We had ice cream down town this morning. Very good. Are Millers at Sona Bata tonite?

Tues. May 18

Ag & Jim both knocked out pretty badly but Jim took the car for some thing & we used a taxi & went down & did some shopping but not all & intended finishing this P.M. but were invited to Orhnemans for tea & Jim had to get the car before. We couldn’t find the place for 45 min. Lovely time - charming folks. They want to try again to come to Rw. More guests came this eve.

Wed. May 19

Left Leo ab’t 9:15 got to Sona Bata at noon & found Millers had gone on yesterday. We were told we’d find a rest house at Kumvulo. so we came on & on. Were told 4 hrs. but it took longer as it got dark. We finally saw lights & find it is a Cath center. Ab’t 6 priests sitting smoking. They said yes we could stay. ushered us into dining room & gave us supper. and now we are in our rooms beds all made etc. Very fine and we are tired. as it was 7:30 when we arrived. Agnes had said How nice if we would find supper & beds ready! I laughed & Jim asked where she based such hopes & here it was even so - at a Cath. center!!

Thur. May 20

Came on thro forest and over large rolling plains miles & miles - crossed 3 streams on ferries & at each place found Mr Millers notes to Jim. They are a day ahead. tho we thot we’d catch them at Masi Manimba tonight but we are 20 mi short of there & boys at last ferry said we couldn’t cross after 9. so we are at a native village - and the NOISE. Ag & I have the air mattresses on native bed. Jim in car. Cooked supper on primus stove.

Fri. May 21 Kikwit

Were up at 5. Had porridge - crackers - & coffee. No bread left. Got to Masi M. early by 7:15 but no Millers. Some said they had been & left - so we left a note at the ferry for them - & came on. Had 3 ferries today - some poled - one pushed by tug & one cable. still more long roads thro grassy plains & more forest. Got here by 4 & got gas & cold water to drink. Came to W.T.M. They were looking for us as (back)

[from back] Cont. from this date. The 2 ladies who shared the dorm at Leo told these folks we might come. Before we got there & Mr & Mrs Eugdahl came in & after tea Millers family - 10 of us - and Mrs. Hutchison so busy painting or something but she seems to know how to manage very well. I share little Dorris’s room. She is Betty’s age. Large house & large hearts.

Sat. May 22

Some went to do a bit of shopping - but when I was first up - ab’t 6:30 - Agnes came & said John Kliewers had come. We were so glad to see them. His wife is very attractive & we had to come by a different road because of a broken ferry. Then we got to a A.M.B.M. station, Kafumba & neighbor of Johns - & fellow workers & they got us a lovely lunch - we drove way past. so Millers got there first. We looked over the station (back)

[from back] Contd from date. then came on. Such a lot of fires - and twisting roads. some forest then palms & grass. This is another A.M.B.M. station only 3 yrs old. Met Mr. Kroker on road. They have just moved into a nice large house - are hardly settled. Again I share the daughters room. This time Joan’s. Such hospitable folks. Twill be nice to have tomorrow’s rest. Again the Lord has led - we are sure & they are too.

Sun. May 23

Attended native service at 9. Over 50 out. This is quite a new station. Mr & Mrs Esau spend most of their time in the villages. All had a grand dinner here - chicken etc & pie ala mode for dessert. All these folks have large refrig’s. Mr. K. didn’t get home last eve til after 10. so every one rested after dinner. This eve we had supper at Esau’s. Bells & I. Millers had break. there. Jim led P.M. Eng. service.

Mon. May 24

Had break. early. and were off just at sun rise. Came on with no trouble - crossed one rocky crossing & when we came to the Lirele where the sand bar is - we found the Engwahls there waiting fror the ferry - and then Millers came & said they broke the plank at the stoney place - just as they drove off. It was 20 to 11 when we got to this stream & we were hungry (to back)

[from back] So since we had plenty of time we decided to boil rice. The Engdahls too started to heat water. Then the ferry came & they left. Took them 1 ½ hrs. They had a hard time crossing the swamp beyond the sand bar. We & Millers ate & then sat in the shade til the ferry returned. Then we went. took us an hr. & finally Millers. Jim went back to help them but by driving fast thro the boggy part they made it too. We didn’t get stuck like the first car. Then we came on to Nianga a C.I.M. station as we couldn’t make Tshikapa. Met Mr & Mrs Toews and Miss Unruh in whose home we had supper and I’m sleeping here. Mr & Mrs Toews leave early tomorrow to get their children from school at Lubondaei, so we will all want to be off early. Such a lovely supper - berry pie!

Tues. May 25

Got away before dawn so no break. but when we got to Tshipaka we had a big break. at the hotel. They expected us last night as we had wired from Kikwit. Saw the first wild animal this morn. a hyena ran along in front of us - for a way. Crossed 2 large bridges & 2 ferries. Thot we’d go to hotel & altho there are 3, all were full. so we (to back)

[from back] asked for a Prot. Mission & were directed back 10 Km. and here we are at Am. Pres. Congo Mission. We 3 are with Mr & Mrs & Millers with Miss. All had lovely baths & we such a good supper. again our 2nd meal for today - we ate bananas between times. God is so good - all these folks are so kind.

Wed. May 26 Lusambo - Westcott Mission.

Had a lovely break & visit with Halverstadts - a P.C.M. and Dr. Poole. It’s a very nice station and very hospitable workers. God bless them. The road was very sandy in spots. We got stuck in one place. crossed one bridge & had a long ferry just here. & that’s all in 135 mi we came. Mr. & Mrs. Birrs are working here. and Miss [space] - haven’t her name. Other guests here too, Mr & Mrs Downs.

Thur. May 27 Tunda. M.E.C.M.

Got away ab’t 8 and found the first 100 km & more very rough & winding so ‘twas hard to make much time. We ate & as Millers hadn’t come we came on. Stopt for gas at Lubefu - a Portuguese man & native wife were very friendly. She does lovely embroidery etc. Last part the roads were fine did 55 for long ways. Mr & Mrs Wheeler - Mr & Mrs Maw - Miss Winfrey & Miss Moore R.N. are here. I sleep at ladies house & eat where Bells do. Some talk of staying til Mon.

Sat. May 29 Shabunda. E.S.A.M.

Came over 300 mi. Jim said leave at 4. I was up at 3. because our time is slower. Waited ½ hr. then Millers left. Waited another ½ hr & Bells were up. We got away in good time & roads were good but in the hills mostly & so couldn’t make much time. Going around one corner we ran off & into mud but were soon making good time. Saw some of these Mission folks in Kindu (to back)

[from back] and got directions how to get here. Found Mr & Mrs Summers here. He came out in our party 1918. Saw Mrs Patterson in Kindu. She is meeting the plane which brings here children from school. Mrs. Wilson is here & we are in Brookes home. All buildings are of burned brick. Large chapel & 3 large 2 story houses - with thatch roofs. This is where Hunts lived. They were with us for 10 days in 1943. Hope to go on tomorrow for it is a 1 way rd. & we’d have to wait til Tues.

Sun. May 30 Rest house near Costermansville, but written on Mon.

Left Shabunda by 9:15 & lunched just before Ikozi where are Denver Int. folks perched on top of rocky hill. 70 kms took us to 1 way rd. The whole way was very winding & we could make no time. 60 kms of 1 way rd but open either way on Sun. Got dark when we were ab’t ½ way - some places very narrow. It rained some. We wondered how Millers (to back)

[from back] (May 31) were managing - some were such short turns. We got to rest house ab’t 9:45 but hunted around for native with key. Ag & I used air mattresses on tables & were comfy. Jim in car. Had soup. Have no bread. Some sweet crackers. Ag. was greatly worried ab’t Millers. & we all had to keep reminding ourselves the Lord had His eyes on them & us. If we hadn’t come on 1 way rd yesterday we couldn’t until Tues. & it wasn’t convenient to stay so long. We were just putting things into the car after break. when Millers drove up. They had slept at a camp. so we got more porridge ready.

Mon. May 31 C.B.F.M.S. 15 Km so of Costermansville.

We got here by 10:30 and Mr & Mrs Bothwell & 3 small children are here. They persuaded us to stay the night. Have a nice stone house & have packed us all away tho they gave up their room too. Jim seems feeling malaria & Harry is all in. We went to town & got gas & Ag & I got canvas hats. Mr B. showed pictures - colored slides. Very pretty. Mrs. Miller & I shared B’s room.

Tues. June 1 Ruanguba - W.G.M. station near Rutshuru.

Got away after break. Bothwells are very lovely folks and treated us royally. Millers decided to take it slowly - so we have come on. Came up west side of Lake on 1 way rd. after ab’t 50 mi of winding rd. then 50 or so & then more to another W.G.M. worker, Okken. & is the place given them because Sake was buried under lava. Were just in time for the ferry across as the volcano is again active & other roads closed. Then we came on to Rutshuru & finally found this place. Camps Sr., Normans, Dr Trouts & Chas. are all here. We saw lots of animals as we crossed Rutshuru plains. Ate lunch as we traveled. (to back)

[from back] (June 2) Stopt at Katwa & saw Earl Camps & had cup of coffee. Got here before 7. Jim came in the Burma road & so all natives knew we were here before whites did.
