WHAT IS THIS COMING YEAR?

It is a door,
By which we reach new fields
Of service for our God and fellow
             man:
A door by which we can
       Explore
       Wide spheres of usefulness
       Our world to bless;
And reap the sheaves God’s Word
             of witness yields.

It is a task
Set by the Master of our souls,
A little part of our life’s work:
       And so we ask
       The holy wisdom, which alone
             controls
       Our labor, teaching what and
             where to sow:
That the year, at its end,
May show God’s glory and man’s
             profit blend.

It is a book,
With many pages and as yet all
             white,
       On which to write
The history of thought, and deed,
             and word
In this new group of days.
       We pray Thee, Lord,
       As Thou shalt look
Upon the book, when written o’er,
may all be to Thy praise.

                        - William Olney.

IN THE BEGINNING, GOD

Key Note                Gen. 1-1

Another year has ended,
             For some it is the last;
       Whatever be its record,
             We cannot change the past.
       But stretching out before us
             The New Year lieth fair;
God help us to be careful
             What shall be written there.

“But this one thing I do. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
         - Phil. 3, 13-14.             [in pencil] 1921

Mon. Jan. 3

Sent Kasole to Mtwangas for 500 cash - but more rice came so sent to Jacquemin for 700. & pd all with that. Hope Paul comes soon to get it. Have written him. Dr. came ab’t 3. brot letter from Gl. & butter from Mrs Becker. Epps have a baby boy. I sent Gl. lemons, tomatoes, cabbage, jam, frying pan - iron of Cora’s. Nancy not so well. They expect to go to Lake on Wed. & Miss Noweck.

Tues. Jan. 4

Played “Pit” again tonight. Bill beat but I did last night. All set for a trip to the Lake. [Ishango] The folks and Miss Noweck. I don’t know what Ella did to persuade her to go. Ella not feeling well.

Wed. Jan. 5

They report a fine time. We were up at 4. Miss N. came down for a cup of coffee & others had rice & got away 5:15 & back by 5. Mail came ab’t 10 last eve - so I read letters this morning. Then wrote some this P.M. Now all are bathed & a bed at 7. Masikini says he saw Coppertop & kitten.

Thur. Jan. 6

The boys said Baliatire had a pig such as I want but he lives at Mtwangas & so it was all day in getting here & then he said he wanted Frs. 7 per kilo. We finally arranged for him to kill it & I’d pay 7.50 for the dressed pig. He agreed & I hope he will do it. Ans. all the girls letters ab’t 10 had accumulated.

Fri. Jan. 7

The pig is killed and pd. for. After all he took Fr. 6 per kilo & it was 57 so he got 342 and I just had it. Thank God. Now I must try to get more cash somewhere. Made do nuts. Canned 2 pts. of corn - some of Ray’s seed & hope Kasole is at Oicha tonight & returns soon.

Sat. Jan. 8

Made lots of sausage. Will roast ham tomorrow. Made lard & salted 3 pieces of bacon. Baked & stewed as per usual. Every one here for supper on lawn with ice cream. Played Pit again & I won. Last night we played 2 games & Bill won both. Margaret had a large minus - but not tonight. Pretty exciting sometimes.

Sun. Jan. 9

Went to both services. Then we all went to Klines for dinner. Yummy - ‘twas good. 4 P.M. service here. Baby Allen not so well. bad cold. Masikini took the alarm clock set for 5. All are pretty well packed up. Kasole came at 8. so I ans Gl. letter at once.

Mon. Jan. 10

Spees got away ab’t 6:30 and Brashlers aren’t here yet tho all rooms are ready. Had big wash. Jekonia swept, washed mats & made up beds. Had to iron a couple of sheets. Guess it’s too far from Kacengu to here in one day - especially coming thro Bunia.

Tues. Jan. 11

Mr. K came ab’t 1 P.M. & brot Misses Lutz & Lloyd. Brashlers couldn’t come - time was too short. Letter from the Bank wanting more money for the 9th box. Also letter from Gurney Harris asking if he & his new wife can come here for honeymoon.

Wed. Jan. 12

3 girls left right after break. for 2nd valley. Took lunch & thermos of tea. Saa Mbili went too - to show them the way. I tried to find out ab’t that box at Beni for I don’t want to pay over 1,000 F. customs on it - its valued at $8.75. All of us to Klines for supper. Very nice.

Thur. Jan. 13

Klines took Miss Rus to Oicha. Mrs K. had her toe treated by Dr. & seems to be suffering quite a bit. They met Cls in Beni coming back from Katwa where Gl. was having her tooth treated. Spees are at Oicha. children are sick. Harters were there. brot sick matives also Brands. Miss Lloyd walked along the water ditch. She seems tireless. Wants to go up the point across the river.

Fri. Jan. 14

And He did. [arrow drawn to previous year; waiting to leave US “We are still waiting for the Lord to work for us. and He will - !”] Cls told Klines he’d be over next week. Bring my box and take the rice for Paul as they have to go over again for teeth. Miss Lloyd walked to the point across the river. Jekonia went with her. Miss Lutz’s cold is much better. They plan to leave early for the hotel to see the snow.

Sat. Jan. 15

And they got away ab’t 5:20 and did see the snow. I baked & then we went for lunch. Mrs K. used a stick and Mr K. so got around alright but it still pains her much. We had supper on their veranda. Made salmon salad - all bran muffins. A busy day but very happy. Hotel man would not take any pay & the girls had break. too. Tho I fried eggs for ‘em!

Sun. Jan. 16

Miss Lutz has bad cold so didn’t go to any mtg. Mostly reports on Kacengu Conf. P.M. meeting at K’s tho her foot is better - not so painful. Played a few gram. records after supper. Read & talked. I remember so well both years. [Jan. 16, ‘47 & ‘48, with Claudon & Gladys in Arkansas.]

Mon. Jan. 17

Lifungula guided the girls up Paradise Valley - & they scrambled up to the water ditch & came back that way. Everything pretty well packed up. The girls have put pictures up for Harrises - so I hope they come.

Was up before 4 & they got away 5:15. Busy moving beds around - & washing. I got Mrs. K’s machine to do sewing & got mattress cover made. Then ab’t 5 Losiers come - so now what? Shall take all pictures down & put into Miss F’s house for the newly weds. & will fix up as well as I can for them. Mail came up from Mutwangas.

Wed. Jan. 19

Losiers sat around & talked. Not so the children - they like the water. They all went to the river. I worked at Miss F’s house. Have beds arranged. My neck is so sore & stiff at night that it troubles me. Was awake a lot last night. Baked nice bread. Miss N. sent lots of berries & I made jam.

Thur. Jan. 20

No one here yet & have all ready - boquets of white roses, snaps, daisies, carnations. Pictures all arranged - floors washed. Thot Harrises might come but they didn’t. Played Chin. check. Children are rather cross.

Fri Jan. 21

It’s almost 8 & they aren’t here yet so we no longer expect them. I made a large dish of macaroni & cheese. Miss N. came & had supper with us. Killed a small pig - 31 kilos. Losiers went to Mutwangas & got some ivory - not much. I baked buns & coffee cake.

Sat. Jan. 22

Klines came ab’t 1 - but Harrises have gone to Kitsombiro first & will come next week. K’s had dinner here then also supper on lawn. Cl. may be over on Mon. Johnny has put a small crayon up his nose. and Miss N. has tried to get it but he screams so nothing can be done.

Sun. Jan. 23

Mrs L. & I went to first mtg. She played the accordion. ‘Twas much appreciated. Then Mr L. went for 2nd mtg. She played at our 4 oclock mtg too. and the children sang. Read & rested & wrote a bit & had phono. after supper.

Mon. Jan. 24

No Cl. came today. More rice here to buy and I’m out of cash again. Just did many little things - baked do nuts & we had ab’t half for P.M. tea. have put others into tin for Cl. if he comes tomorrow. Chinese checkers this eve.

Thur. Jan. 27

Losiers have decided to leave tomorrow & visit other stations. I made more do-nuts today. and shortcake for supper. L’s had dinner at Klines. Billy & I ate here. My tummy is not good. Throat too is sore. Mrs. L. complains of painful shoulder. He is running gram. tonight. Harrises brot 2 water buck Cl had shot.

Fri. Jan. 28

Losiers left after break. and are no doubt at Oicha tonight. Billy & I are alone - so Billy chatters incessantly. Harrises had supper at Klines. I wrote Mrs. Wegmueller they could come any time after Feb. 15. Spose Cl’s will be in tomorrow. Every one got a good hunk of water buck.

Sat. Jan. 29

Cl. & Dr McC. came in about 2:30. They will spend the week end here. Got 1 elephant but not very large. May go for more near by on Mon. Baked some but seems like not much - cleaned one bed room & got beds made up. Cl. sleeps in my bed & I in west room which has a short native made bed.

Sun. Jan. 30

How well I remember a yr ago. [Grandma Scott’s funeral in Arkansas] Bells came ab’t 2, had lunch on way. Left after hi tea & took Billy along. and Harrises have every thing ready to leave at 5. so we said Goodby. Cl & Dr. will leave tomorrow after lunch.

Mon. Jan. 31

Cl & Dr. left ab’t 12. Harrises went at 5 as planned. Rooms are pretty upset but Jekonia will get things straight tomorrow. Wrote Otraco ab’t exorbitant price of box. Also wrote Big Mama. [Gladys’s mother] Hope to get some letters off every day.

Tues. Feb. 1

They said she was such a nice brave patient. Gl & I talked to her a bit after service. She was suffering some. Rays talked from Rethi and we’ll come tomorrow. Our Xmas plans will be changed.

Mon. Dec. 12

Staid with Betty most all day. Seems fairly comfy if she doesn’t move. They put her in 2nd cabin on a nice bed that has head raised. She has quite a temp tonight and they gave her a penicillin shot.

Tues. Dec. 13

Almost time for lights out & still no one here. I spent even more time with Betty. She wasn’t very comfy til ab’t 4 P.M. when she wakened from a long sound sleep & was really bright when I left her about 7:15. Mail came but nothing exciting.

Wed. Dec. 14

Guess they’ve decided things for me. As soon as Betty can travel we go to Bafuka & Rays wont come down now. Boo hoo! so I’ll have to go with Cls to Andudu etc & get back to Rw. the 4th or 5th. Will wire Dr. Lawsons they can come by 6 or so. Sara was with Betty all A.M. & I all P.M.

Thur. Dec. 22 AUNGBA

We got away before 5. Stopt in Bunia and several other places. but the trip wasn’t too bad got here 5:30. Mr Brill out hunting. Lovely supper. Betty & I sleep in Miss Rus’ house. Faith gets car sick so Gl. finally sat behind with her. Dick sleeps so is easily held.

Fri Dec. 23 BAFUKA

Got away again by 5. No mishaps - and a stop every couple of hours. so got on. At Dungu had tea yum. Saw all the folks and Rays got their car. They got here ab’t 20 min ahead of us. We got here 7:30. So nice to arrive. Every one very tired. but happy. Betty, Faith & I room together.

Sat. Dec. 24

My! it’s nice to be here all together. A busy day. Sara went in circles - trying to greet folks, unpack, keep us busy, and get ready for tomorrow. I baked apple pie & Mr Weiss gave us a leg of mpala which we roasted partly. I baked buns - but the boy put the sponge into the oven! so had to start others.

Sun. Dec. 25

This also has been a happy day and week as we think of God’s goodness in restoring Betty and tho we traveled far it wasn’t too tiresome. and such a happy time as we are having here. Ray is on the go always and Sara pretty well follows him. Mtgs still all sorts. communion this P.M. and bon fire & Gram. & talks this eve. Supper - yum - at Z’s.

Mon. Dec. 26

Not alone tonight. [arrow drawn to previous year, “Alone!”] The 5 smaller ones keep things humming for no two sleep at the same time - and all are well lively youngsters, thank God. Ray busy all day & still at it with the elders at church tho he had his supper & we had some music - but then he was called out. Betty cut out & basted her dolls dress - then Sally got hold of the other pattern & partly ate it.

Tues. Dec. 27

Wonder if Klines are at Kampala tonight. Did something of most every thing. Ray finally finished mtgs by noon. Sara has chop boxes ready & Cl & John have guns ready. Took walk to leper camp this eve. Ray is showing pictures there tonight. Marked MA’s clothes ready for Rethy.

Wed. Dec. 28

Men left after early chicken dinner. Mr. Z. went too. Gl. sewing at Saras jersey dress. I patched some. sewed Billy’s shoes. and finished Cora’s letter. It’s so windy & dusty we are all having trouble with noses & throats. I do wish Rays were coming to me out of it all for a bit. Prymtg here.

Thur. Dec. 29

Nothing very exciting to record. Wrote Bess. Sara & I canned 10 qts of pineapple - all the cans we could find. Mrs. Z. here to supper. Wish we could see the hunters for 5 min. Hot today but not so windy. Got broadcast this morn. but no news.

Fri. Dec. 30

Just about as busy as yesterday! These seem idle days - but it’s nice not to have to push all the time. When Dick wants to walk, we go with him. I mended & marked more stockings & socks. The sun is sure hot but air cool always wear my new cape mornings. Baked buns. & cake for pudding.

Sat. Dec. 31

And it has. [arrow drawn to previous year, “Many are reveling tonight & few praying. Can it go on another yr?”] The men got back ab’t 3 P.M. brot some meat but had to go back for more. that hadn’t been brot in. Nothing for us but a basket of lovely large oranges. I baked pie for tomorrow. cherry. Z’s will eat with us. Eleven. looked at pictures R. showed. Very good.

[from back] Dec. 31 ‘49 This has been a wonderful year of blessed service for our King. God bless all my guests of the year.
