“A Merry Christmas to Florence, from Lora. 1926.”
“Be not amazed at life,
‘Tis always been the mode of God,
with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfill,
In times & ways they least expect.”
From Mrs Guither
[From clippings:]
MY NEW YEAR PRAYER.
Dear Master, for this coming year
Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: “Teach me to do
The thing that pleaseth thee.”
A quiet lot in life is mine,
Made up of little things;
Teach me to do as unto thee
The duties each day brings,
Faithful in that which is the least
Dear Master, I would be,
Thus making all my daily work
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to please thee through this year
In every word I say.
Dear Master, take these lips of mine
And keep them day by day
From foolish talking, angry words,
And evil-speaking free:
Teach me, that I may ever speak
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
Not only what to do and say
Would I be daily taught;
I ask thee so to cleanse my heart
And purify each thought
That every thought and every wish
May pure and holy be.
I want in everything to be
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
“The thing that pleaseth thee.”

[and probably from “Daily Light”]
Morning.
I will go in the strength of the Lord.
Ps. 71. 16.
Tues. Jan. 1
And now we begin again. If a poor beginning makes a
good ending we should close 1929 with a grand day for this
day has been most disappointing. A bad head and disappointed
in the natives & their response to the meetings as well
as to what Partari is asking. & then Shaffers want Johns
help to get them back & its hard to see thats best.
Barnetts did not get here. We’ll look for em tomorrow.
Wed. Jan. 2
Looked in vain for Barnetts. Feeling a bit better
today but not much pep. Worked at dress a bit & finished
boys letter. Meetings as usual. Have about given up B’s.
Perhaps things went wrong at home. Mulungit came. I paid him
part wages.
Thur.* Jan. 3
And about 5 P.M. they came & had a Mrs Kline
with them who wanted to get on to Nairobi & delayed
because car broke down. Mr. S. is taking her in in Mr.
Clarkes car. Mr C had supper here too. Jno only went to
meeting & said we’d have no more til Sun. & then
they were to say if they were ready for baptism.
Fri. Jan. 4
Mr. & Mrs. B staid in bed late. Ruth &
Willie are busy looking things over. Mrs. S. asked Mr C up
for roast mutton & Mr S didn’t get back so Mr & Mrs
B went over too but the meat was spoiled. Had music here
afterward. Lunch at C’s falls.
Sat. Jan. 5
Finally this noon we were by ourselves. This eve we
went to Clarkes. Had very nice time. “Rigoletto” gets nicer
each time its played. Baked & cleaned as usual.
Sun. Jan. 6
Long A.M. meeting. Not many of the Christians
testified, & we hardly know what to do. I had to lie
down all P.M. but was up for cafateria supper here. John
says many were out tonight & many testified. We read
letters & talked.
Mon. Jan. 7
Bridget helpt with washing. Mr. C. came up for stew
& dumplings. Good number out tonight. We had 4 oclock
mtg & intend to have each P.M. Evening mtgs continue
this week & Sat. There will be mtg of elders etc &
examination of some for baptism.
Tues. Jan. 8
Baked & ironed. Major Dawson, a Mr Walford, of
Kabete, Mr. Roach & Dr. Patterson came this P.M. to
inspect houses & gardens. They seemed fairly pleased
with what they saw. Jno was with the men so couldn’t come to
meeting. Very few out tonight.
Wed. Jan. 9
I called the women of the class. Not all came. I
excused the girls telling them they were not old enuf. The
only ones I feel we can pass are mother of Soibi & Mrs.
Gashisha. & perhaps Mrs. Mbaei. Others need school etc
or discipline. Mr. S. led mtg this P.M. Mr C. had cup of tea
and a bit more at supper table.
Thur. Jan. 10
Jno called his class. He doesn’t seem very well
satisfied about it tho. Hice mail tonight. Letter &
pictures from the boys. Lo’s passport picture & today
she is sailing if all went as planned. Shaffers got $250.
toward going home. Lo sends Geographic & has made me a
member.
Fri. Jan. 11
John had a letter given him this morning from the
folks here to say they were going to go to Dr. Arthur about
things. We can’t think what is wrong but we know some thing
is tying things up. We continue to pray. Crowd out tonight.
But we’ve decided its best not to baptise nor have communion
on Sun.
Sat. Jan. 12
Our house hold & Harry D. went to the bridge
& then walked down a ways & fished. Mrs B & I
sewed & talked. Had music tonight. I finished my dress-
just needs pressing. Then started letter to boys. B’s car is
lovely. We had an enjoyable day but for the heavy hearts
because of trouble in church.
Sun. Jan. 13
John was very worked up by mtg time this A.M. He
didn’t know what to say. When he said we’d baptise &
have communion & all should come that know their hearts
are right Tameno got up & said they (the elders) hadn’t
been asked & they knew something ab’t all the
candidates. We heard Mulungit was here (to back). [From
back, Jan. 13.] So Jno, Mr. B & Mr S went up to see him
& talk with him. The elders were all together there and
none would say anything. So they came back. Mr. B. led PM
meeting. John thinks its best not to go over tonight. It
seems so hard to know what to do. Their letter only said
they couldn’t teach him any thing. The Lord must undertake
in it all.
Mon. Jan. 14
Nolminangae and Bridget washed & we ironed.
We’ve about decided we’ll go to our Narok camp. where we
were with Davises & Kendalls. Mr. C. was on his way up
to supper last eve but a car drove in so he went back. Was
here to lunch & left afterward for Nairobi for a mo. or
so.
Tues. Jan. 15
We got away ab’t 8:30 & thot by 10 we’d be in
camp but we wandered around & finally ate lunch &
Jno shot a guinea fowl & we wandered some more, and
never did find our way down so stopt at Narok for gas &
came on to Ngiro & are camped below the bridge. Willie
caught one fish.
Wed. Jan. 16
Tried fishing this morning but no good so came back
& tried again for the road to River. The men went
together & after 2 ½ hrs. they came back & had found
the way down. We ate lunch & went & are catching
fish a plenty. Its very dry & dusty here.
Thur. Jan. 17
Had fish for breakfast & some 50 to take home.
Jno went for guinea but got none tho he shot several times.
We had lunch & then went home. Shaffers are all packed
ready to leave in the morning at daylight. Kuyoni started
yeast for me.
Fri. Jan. 18
Shaffers got off by 6:15. Mr. C. came in abt 5 so
asked him to supper. He saw S’s & said roads were very
rough. Baked & washed & ironed a few things. Have
things put together so wont take long in the morning. Sent
OlleShongo for mail.
Sat. Jan. 19
Got away by 9:15. Stopt under 2 big acacias for
lunch. Had lovely sight of giraffe. Got very close but
hadn’t my camera. At Quarantine made a mistake & took
lower road & found it much better. Got here by 3:15. Tea
& baths & meeting tonight. Not many here yet.
Shaffers are in camp. Mrs was ill from the shaking up. Is
better tonight.
Sun. Jan. 20
Dr Davis read letters of greeting from quite a
number of friends. The boys at S.S. also went to Davises
this A.M. & read letters & talked. Intended going to
native service but didn’t get finished. Called at S’s tent.
Nice communion service. No eve service. All are visiting.
Meals are lovely. Its nice not to plan them but just eat.
Mon. Jan. 21
Jno led early prayermtg. Mr. D. spoke on I Pet.
Very good. Mr Bryson speaks on Psalms tomorrow too. Mr
Johnston came in today. Meetings all as per program.
Meetings good but lack some thing. Enjoying the
meals very much. So nice not to have to think of
eats til its eating time.
Tues. Jan. 22
Lo should be getting to Gibraltar today. Dr. Arthur
was here today. Says Mulungit came to see him about work at
Ngong. He, Dr, wants to put a teacher there. M. has been
very sneaky about it all. Dr A. is going up Eldama Ravine
way baptising etc in Barnetts district. Its hard to know
what he is up to but it all looks very unfair.
Wed. Jan. 23
I took P.M. prayer mtg. Canon Burns spoke this P.M.
so helpfully again. Moody students & others had mtg this
eve. Nice letters from the boys again. Dr. Arthurs visit
yesterday has certainly stirred things up. But he is
determined to make the trip. Says he’ll be with us on the 12th.
Thur. Jan. 24
Mtgs. as per program but Mr Reynolds is not here so
the PM was given to talking ab’t how to provide for our
native teachers wages. Mrs Probst served tea. Womens mtg
this eve. Mrs Knapp spoke on Conf. Very helpful. Another
bunch of letters. One from Lora telling of Mrs Dreblorn
gasoline accident & death.
Fri. Jan. 25
Rained hard this P.M. I went to prayermtg but left
during business part. Its too hard to get the discussions.
Some thot allowances should be raised. so they did - $500.
each now. but the Lord knows we don’t need that
much. Mr. Farnsworth showed his pictures tonight. I worked
at Arith. all day & have ab’t finished.
Sat. Jan. 26
Business all day again. John didn’t go this P.M.
Every one is getting very tired. I started letter to Al
& the rest, Mrs Davis talked to the nurses etc this eve.
There was some discussion about our belonging to the Lake
Dist. It wasn’t settled.
Sun. Jan. 27
Jno took walk to the station. No cars going out for
sure. but some may come in & go back so will have to go
down & sit til one comes. I went to native meeting. Nice
service this P.M. Mr Barnett led. Mrs & I had little
service with Masai at Hospital. Praise service the eve Mr
Guilding led.
Mon. Jan. 28
Home again but O tired & foot sore! Jno & I
walked to station. Shaffers brot loads. Found one truck had
left ab’t 9. sorry we mist it but we had scarcely finished
our lunch when Patel truck came & left at once so we
were off by 3. & got here by 10. Walked from plain &
shoes rubbed so have 2 large spots like shilling.
Tues.* Jan. 29
Many came to greet us. Late breakfast & haven’t
done much. feet are sore & muscles too. Mr Clarke came
for supper. Gashisha’s cart went to bring loads. Elisa &
Nyakeiru each brot one too as they went first. I’m glad we
are here. Parmale seems to have taken care of things pretty
well. Jno worked at ram.
Wed. Jan. 30
Parmale washed a pretty big wash too. I rinsed
& hung up. Started sponge & stiffened tonight. At
Clarkes for supper. He came up in the car for us & took
us for a ride to the plain. Shot at a tommy but too far. Jno
worked at ram all day. Goes better now. Just last thing a
rag slipt in for him.
Thur. Jan. 31
Parmale & I both at ironing. Baked bread too.
Jno at road. Mr Clarke left for Nairobi. Hoped Motion would
bring mail but he did not return. Mbali & Soibi came
& we talked ab’t teachers. Guess we’ll keep Wambogo on
& I’ll have night school.
And already one month gone. Hard to tell what the
next will bring forth. God is permitting these things and we
can only pray it will bring glory to His name. Mulungit
hasn’t come yet so we don’t know what he’s doing. Good crowd
at prayermtg John said.
Fri. Feb. 1
Had prayer mtg with women but only 5 came. One can
feel it on all sides that something is going on. People
greet us & act nice but there’s something wrong some
place. M. is not here. Motion didn’t come today. Parmale
will go to Narok tomorrow.
Sat. Feb. 2
Parmale said he saw Mulungit & the Syabei
elders at Narok having a shauri. He didn’t know what ab’t.
I’m sure they are asking Scotch Mission to take this over.
All we can do is pray that God will work out His own best
will. and Satan may be defeated.
Sun. Feb. 3
Ab’t as many out to meeting as usual. 5 elders came
to see just what was wanted for school then asked John if he
wanted words but he had nothing to tell them & when he
asked abt M. they didn’t know. I wrote some. Very bad head
this eve. Didn’t go to church. Am going to bed.
Mon. Feb. 4
First day of school. A good many out. but not all.
None of the night school from Narok. Nareyu & Ruth both
want to come but can’t according to rule of church. Have my
two classes in small room. They want to begin at 7:30-10:30.
Night 7-8:30 or 9.
Tues. Feb. 5
Parmale washed after school. Not much- I hung up.
He doesn’t sleep here so it gets late for breakfast. His
shauri. Spent PM preparing to tomorrows womens meeting. Read
up in maga’s from Will Peter. They are good. Want to read
all.
Wed. Feb. 6
Children went to garden. After looking around there
some I came & ironed & got food ready for tomorrow
too. Parmale watered at Shaffers but he wont come to do it
til supper time & then gets cross when I want him to do
his work here. No Narok folks out tonight. Something wrong.
Thur. Feb. 7
School as usual. A boy Musa from Scotch Mission
came. His Kraal is at Nairaq Ngare. Started yeast from the
dry I made & its very good. Prayermtg tonight.

took little folks- 16 of em. Hot & windy all day. Head
ache again. Wrote boys. Didn’t go to eve meeting. Started to
read Siess Apocalypse Lectures aloud this P.M. Wonder what
we’ll know by next Sun.
Mon. Feb. 11
John was sure they’d be in tonight but they haven’t
come. I have beds pretty well ready. Washed some before
school & finished other afterward. Very hot. Mwarania
cut her foot & as It was bleeding pretty badly Wambogo
took bandage up so had no lessons. Wrote Mrs. Dawson.
Tues. Feb. 12
They came about 7. John had about given up looking
for them. Dr Blakeslee with them so fixed up camp bed for
her. Men in Shaffers house. Got supper for them & talked
til 9:30. Mrs Watson is pretty old for such a trip. Mr.
Calderwood is from Tumutumu.
Wed. Feb. 13
Early tea. baths late breakfast! They walked up to
the dukas & had a look around & Dr Arthur soon spied
Mulungit & got an ear full & told Jno they wanted
another teacher & he’d try to send them one. They got
away by ten after tea. Went to Narok school & then on
home. We called elders & tried to find out about it all
(to back) [From back, Feb. 13.] After questioning them a
long time as to Why to try to hide about wanting a teacher
& going to Dr Arthur on the sly they finally owned up
they had done wrong & that they don’t want a teacher
etc. Jno told them if they still wanted M. for head man
alright we’d try him again. He’s very sober & not at all
like himself. I do hope he makes things right now.
Thur. Feb. 14
Mulungit had the nerve to come up today & ask
for his pay. I gave him Sh. 10 & promised him 15 more
but John has about decided we wont take him on again. When I
told him if he wanted pay he must stay here he hung his
head.
Fri. Feb. 15
Prayer Day. Shauri this P.M. and this eve. Mateie
called ab’t 1 asked me to see Silole. I went but seemed
nothing to do – about 2:30 her baby came. All seemed well.
School tonight. Mr. C. drove into his place. Thot he might
be up but did not come. M. can be head man but no pay.
Sat. Feb. 16
I had a talk with M. but he sat glum and did not
answer a word. I do pray he will let God work in his heart.
We went to Mr C’s for supper. Very nice. Mr Adams is there.
Baked & cleaned as usual. They are to come tomorrow
night.
Sun. Feb. 17
Headache again. Interesting time with little folks
in S.S. Mr C etc came up for supper. brot a lot along. He
suggested we come down after mtg & have Rigoletto but
Jno spoiled it all by saying we’d let boys have mtg & go
at once. I was awful disappointed. he says I showed
it & made all feel it. I didn’t enjoy the music at all.
Mon. Feb. 18
Two more out to night school. Hope they keep on
coming. much better when theres a lot. Washed. Mended. Jno

few on either side of us- but none here. Hope we’ve escaped.
School tonight. Wrote Mrs Barnett.
Thur. Feb. 21
Dr. Green & family & Miss Clarke got here
at 11 last eve. Fixed up Shaffers beds. & guest bed.
They left about 11 & Shaffers came about 5. Locusts came
abt 8:30. Thicker & thicker. We covered a few things
& chased them but got too thick. Rested & when we
got up all were gone. Ate potato & tomato vines
especially. Not much real damage done. Native gardens
either.
Fri. Feb. 22
Shaffers are getting settled again. Came over for
music. I had school. Prayerm’t’g this P.M. It’s nice to be a
whole station again. Garden looks rather sick but if rains
come soon things will grow again- & potatoes we dig.
Tomatoes were no good any way. Sun too hot.
Sat.* Feb. 23
Parmale washed – such a lot of sheets I ironed.
& baked & got things ready for all to eat here
tomorrow night. A lovely mail tonight 11 foreign letters.
Boys OK. 5 from Lora from different places enroute. Very
interesting.
Sun. Feb. 24
Yes we all remember a year ago. [Death of Helen
Shaffer.] Instead of all eating here tonight Jno ate there.
I had a terrible head all P.M. Vomited but that didn’t
relieve it. Haven’t had such a hard spell for a long time.
Communion service this P.M. 3 elders took. Most of Christian
women.
Mon. Feb. 25
At school again but my head is not comfortable. Mrs

drove in about 4. Mr. Roach had tea here & then
bargained with Mr. S. for the little Ford & took it with
him. So
Wed. Feb. 27
now we can’t have it no matter how low the
license is but maybe the Lord has something else for us. We
thank Him for a good remittance which has enabled us to pay
up Shaffers entirely. Today Major Dawson & Mr & Mrs
Deck called.
Thur. Feb. 28
Mr Clarke had just arrived with fish & he &
Jno put them into the river. Major Dawson leaves Narok
tomorrow on leave. Mr Clarke came up for supper last night
and today we had lunch at the falls. Shaffers too. Sewing
class this PM.
Rained a lot this PM but had sewing class. Mrs
Shaffer is going to take prayer mtg tomorrow. Another good
mail tonight. Boys & Mrs W’s letters came. R. has had
tonsils out. Lora’s posted at Cairo 7th got here.
That seems very near.
And such a month! Some very hard things have
happened. but God is able to work all out to His glory.
Tomorrow finishes 4 wks of school. I hoped more would come
at night – 3 are regular. Drs boys can’t get away- Olgoyai
says.
Fri. Mar. 1
Is it possible this is 3rd mo? This
closes 4 wks. of school. Have we done all that
should be done? I get worked up some times for I feel we are
doing so little.
Sat. Mar. 2
Baked cookies, pie & bread. Mr. C. asked us all
four down there for supper. Very nice. All enjoyed it much.

for headman. Mbaie.
Fri. Mar. 8
Mrs. S. took womens mtg. I staid with the children.
Tried to rain hard but didn’t accomplish much. Shaffers came
for music but he wrote on typewriter & she came to
school. So we’ll music tomorrow.
Sat. Mar. 9
Baked some. and did usual work. Shaffers sold a lot
of their “junk” today. We took some. Wrote Mrs Westervelt
this eve am enclosing Farm Mothers letter. Also note to
boys. “Rigoletto” is going. I got supper & let Parmale
have PM off for planting.
Sun. Mar. 10
5 were baptised: Kanoko, Sitoya, Kuyoni, Soibi’s
mother & Wangari Mbaie. I had no headache today. It
seemed so nice. Mr. Shaffer took P.M. meeting & they ate
here. Had phono after supper. Elders told John they’d rather
have P.M. meeting & not evening. So we’ll try it.
Mon. Mar. 11 Rained
Washed & ironed. Parcel of testaments etc from
Cora. A lovely Red letter one for Mulungit but we haven’t
seen him for a month. While in school this eve it started
& came down pretty hard.
Tues. Mar. 12
Did some sewing on Mrs S’s machine & hemmed up
her skirt. Mr. S. boxed up their phono so we got C’s &
are having Rigoletto. S’s heard there’s no boat til May 23
but they may leave before then & camp & visit. Wrote
Miss Kolachney.
Wed. Mar. 13
S’s are planning to leave on Fri. She fussed at
first but seems agreed now. He is crazy to get away.
Had class. None of the smaller girls came & I’m glad.
They are not in earnest. Mrs S & I saw Sitoyas sister
& dresst her head. Rainy today & raining hard this
evening.
Thur. Mar. 14
S’s ate here all day. so she can pack. She sewed
too & baked some. but I guess are pretty well packed up.
Made out our bill to them. It’s just under 200- counting
provisions & Wambogos things too. We should have plenty
of flour & sugar for awhile.
Fri. Mar. 15
They got off ab’t 9:30. Sold things still this
morning. I never saw any one want shillings so much as they
did. No rain all day. Have given the boys their choice-
either K9 & P7 a mo. or 8 & 6 & soap & oil.
Harvested lima beans. Prayer day. We hear Mr. Deck is coming
for some shauri in a few days.
Worked over at S’s all A.M. Lots of rags left &
thats all. Even the red cloth which she
promised me for spine pads she sold & the
lavender dress I gave her & said I would be glad to
have! I am almost bitter ab’t some things. Jno is
planning to make a bath room but says they cannot have the
tub back.
Sun. Mar. 17
A.M. meetings as usual but this P.M. had mtg
instead of tonight. People wanted it so & I like it
better. Boys saw a snake in S’s cook house. Jno shot at
it but it seems to have gotten away. Wrote to the boys after
reading our chap. from Seiss.
Mon. Mar. 18
Parmale started washing before sun was up. He
hardly finished before it went down. There were about 4
lines full. It is most all dry & ready to iron. After
this we will have more regularity in work. Jno brot bath tub
over & took up stones for the drain pipe.
Tues.* Mar. 19
Kuyoni ironed. Got thro in good time. Wanted to
know if there was more tomorrow. Wrote Miss Simpson &
Partari & finished boys & Aunt Annies. Got the pipe
connections in for tub. J is working beyond Shaffers toward
the river trying to clear it up.
Wed. Mar. 20
Still doesn’t rain. Cloudy most all day. AM Jno at
brush P.M. at bath room. So many have bad colds. Parmale was
very annoying twice today so I had to call him down. Now
there’s nice wood in kitchen. 12 out to class.
Thur. Mar. 21
Nice mail tonight. Letter from boys. & several
from Lora. I did work for boys to do tomorrow night. We are
planning on going after school. No women here so wont have
prayer mtg. Many went to Nairaq Ngare.
Fri. Mar. 22
Got away ab’t 12. Stopt at hi bridge stream &
lunched. Then on across next valley & camped under trees
on nice little plain. No sign of rain. Kanoku & Parmale
& 2 donkeys are with us. Wherever Jno looked today it
seemed very feasible to make the road.
Sat. Mar. 23
Kanoku & Jno left right after early breakfast.
Came back abt 11 satisfied the road can be made. Some thing
fritened donkeys last night. Jno said he heard a leopard.
Boys soon had ‘em back & big fire. Got home before 3
P.M. & bathed in big tub & used shower too – it was
so warm. Enjoyed it all. Threatening much & sprinkled.
Sun. Mar. 24
Nice restful day. No headache. P.M. meeting. It
rained some before and is cloudy this eve. Finished a big
letter to all – looked over all Loras & answered &
all enclosures too. Al & Chas & Cora. That’s done
for awhile.
Mon. Mar. 25
Didn’t get clothes dry when it began raining ab’t
1:30 & rained hard & steady. The dry ground just
soaked it up and not much ran off. Jno put in sink from
Shaffers. I made writing lessons. It seems we hit just the

not so or we would go some where else & work. Mulungit
has not been here for a long time & when he does come he
never comes near us. What can he have against us so hard, I

stubborn wont even listen to my orders.

Had class. Not many came. It rained quite hard
& John was caught in it. Finished Guithers
letter. Parmale is rather sulky but attends to biz.

Mon. Nov. 18
John went toward Nairaq Ngare to see abt path. Was
gone all day. Feet are very sore tonight. Think it must be
fallen arches. Am writing Nairobi to see if they haven’t
supports. Wrote Offerle, Mrs Bischoff. Thot once we’d go to
N.G. this wk but am sure Jno can’t walk so far.
Tues. Nov. 19

for them to eat. Cut up Korean blue dress for rug rags.
Wed. Nov. 27
Instead of garden work the children carried stones
on the dam. It helps such a lot. Had class as usual. O dear

prayer mtg. We stopt a bit early. So children could come for
drill.

Foot ball game this P.M. Narok boys came over. Will
try picture of S.S. tomorrow. Narok boys gave good drill.
They do very well. Ours seem to want to learn. Partari will
try to teach them. Sitoya got cash for me & took
letters.
Even if sin has been found out and we know there’s
plenty that is hidden yet we know God is able.
O how we do need a revival. Circumcision question is
suspending many from the church. We’ve done nothing definite
about it. Kijabe has. natives wanted it.
Sun. Dec. 1
Meetings as usual. Communion this P.M. & tho
several of the young fellows are back Kanoku, & Mboga-
they did not take communion. Neither were Nyakeiru &
Wanjiku out. It seems so hard for these folks to keep
straight.
Mon. Dec. 2
The bush buck is ruining the garden but Jno says
its too dark to see him & too much work to make the
fence higher. So there seems little to do. I put a lighted
lantern out tonight. Dam seems to be holding.
Tues. Dec. 3
The buck was not in last night but 2 dikdiks were
still in this morning almost caught them. How well I
remember a year ago. [trying to start outschool at Lo Murua]
and we’ve no school there yet. tho the road is to be opened
up by Gov’t now soon.
Wed. Dec. 4
Not nearly all out to class. Learned today Nyakeiru
& 3 children are in hospital at Narok. and Wanjiku did
not come Sun. because of Grace crying so much. Wrote the
boys tonight. C’s pictures came yesterday. So pretty. Wax on
canvas & charcoal.
Thur. Dec. 5
Mr. Chaundy here to tea. Are hiring Kapirondoi to
watch the garden because of the birds. but that doesn’t keep
the buck out at night. I hang a lantern in the peach tree
but he comes within a few yards any way. but tomatoes are
ripening nicely. and some very large ones. Some home mail.
J’s arch supports came.
Fri. Dec. 6
Called for women early & waited a full hour and
1 came. Then some girls came and one more woman. Most had
gone to Narok or were busy. O dear. I had prayed God should
bring only those whom He could bless & use. Perhaps He
did. Only 2 more weeks of school. Kinyanjui came &
drilled the children.
Sat. Dec. 7
Kuyoni went to Narok. Parmale has a very bad cold.
Made sauce of green peaches. Seems good. Brot in a huge
tomato weighed 3 lbs. Typed some S.S. work. and some songs.

Nolminangai made some hominy for us.
Sun. Dec. 8
Meetings as usual. Kapirondoi watches the birds.
and peaches & tomatoes are ripening nicely. Buck comes
into the garden every night.
Mon. Dec. 9
Didn’t wash. Kuyoni got wood. Parmale seems very
miserable. John started building stone wall under wire thus
raising it abt 4 ft. Goes pretty well so will go all round
garden. I hang lantern in tree every night to save tomatoes.
Tues. Dec. 10
Kinyanjui went to Narok & brot fat. Kuyoni
washed. Letter from Innises. Cut out boys kahki shirts for
Xmas & sewed ‘em. Used bottoms of Johns for sleeves.
Typed S.S. work & “Hold the Fort” a new translation.
John had a very restless night so of course did I.
Wed. Dec. 11
We talked late last night but got some things
straightened out a bit. Kuyoni ironed. Rained a nice shower.
Made mince meat. The fence looks nice and will be very
durable. Kuyoni says that 5 of the young men are standing
against girls circum. We thank God for that & believe he
will help others.
Thur. Dec. 12
Good rain this P.M. & at it still. Had sewing
for older girls & let the others do chains for Xmas. It
poured for awhile & Jno feared the effect on the dam but
it did no harm. Local letters. Miss Perrott asks to bring
her dog along! Popplestones story of their trip has come 50
typed pages. Teasdales have a baby boy.
Fri. Dec. 13
Nice meeting this P.M. 14 out. Went to see Nyakeiru
before school. She looks thin & is weak. but better. I
gave medicine to all coughing children. Major Dawson &
Rylands called about 5:30. Major looks well. She is with her
father in England. Olgoyai & Bridget are having trouble.
He wants to get a divorce.
Sat. Dec. 14
Made cocoanut macaroons. & pie etc. tomato jam
also a bit from green peaches. Jno got fence finished to the
house. not stones just wire & posts set. Cut out a shirt
for Jno Mbaei & am using whats left for trimming on my
green Mrs. Shaffer dress. Partly cut it out.
Sun. Dec. 15
Head got too bad by P.M. to go to mtg. Better this
eve. Nice mail came. Good letter from boys. Olle Motion says
there are 2 boxes at Narok for us. he will bring tomorrow.
Guess its the groceries from Nrb.
Mon. Dec. 16
Yes, it was the groceries. All in fine shape.
Wonder if Claudon [19th birthday] feels
his years. Started a letter to them. Lots of thunder &
lightening but not much rain. Sewed Jno M’s shirt & cut
out my green dress.
Tues.* Dec. 17
While I was busy typing at my robin letter Mr.
Clarke turns up. Almost sick with a cold. I got tea &
sort o lunch for him. Jno heard the car & came early
from his class. Elija & Parmale got 5 loads of stones
down to the fence. That will help Jno- his back troubles.
Wed. Dec. 18
Mr. C. came up ab’t 1:30 & staid to supper.
Feels pretty badly coughs some. Kuyoni bot khaki for
a shirt. I’ve made them each one for Xmas. Boys at stones
this P.M. Give them 1 S. for 5 big loads.
Thur. Dec. 19
Olle Motion brot mail & a box containing ham
& dried fruit from Mrs B. which she got from Wilsons.
All is lovely. Mr. C. here to supper. Rained this P.M. Major
Dawson came for class. Last sewing class.
Fri. Dec. 20
When last eve Mr. Clarke suggested a drive to
Nairaq Ngare John agreed- never thinking ab’t Pray D. I did
think but thot best not to say much as I always protest.
Mbaei read & I read prayer letter. 15 or more out. Mr C.
here to supper.
Sat. Dec. 21
Expected Mrs Paterson & some guests but later
had word the guests didn’t come. Major Dawson came & it
poured. Wanja came from Narok with the baby who was nearly
gone when they called me to see him as she stopt in the boys
house. He died ab’t 6. Seemed like pneumonia. Clarke to sup.
Major D. walked back 2 miles as gas gave out. Mr. C. helpt
him out.
Sun. Dec. 22
Mr. Clarke staid for lunch & then hurried off
for Nairobi. Left the boys each S. 2. for Xmas. Went to see
Wanja this A.M. She feels very badly. Threatened but no
rain. Bad head. Mrs Paterson wants us to come for Xmas.
Guess we’ll go if they can bring us back.
Mon. Dec. 23
Parmale washed. John spaded Shaffers garden. I made
peanut brittle & divinity. Practiced this P.M. Wrote at
robins this eve. No one went to Narok today. so didn’t get
Mrs. P’s letter to her. Will send Parmale tomorrow.
Tues. Dec. 24
Made 70 pop corn balls. Program went off alright.
Milaun, Musa & Parmale did most of decorating. Kuyoni
ironed the A.M. & helpt with balls. Mrs Paterson was
away so no ans. Silk for dress trim came from Miss Slater.
So pretty!
Wed. Dec. 25
Very quiet day. I sewed a dress for Wanjiku of
Kamoni. & finished my green. boys pealed peaches. made
jam. Dr. P. & a Scout who is visiting them came ab’t 4.
Took eggs- tom- balls & candy. Very nice time. Rylands,
Storrs Fox, Chaundy, 9 in all. Were ready to come home just
after 11 but car needed fixing. Got home 1. Singers were out
late last night too. No community dinner but races. Lots of
strangers here.
Thur. Dec. 26
Had thot of going out camping but its pretty rainy.
Found this morning that the dam had given way under the
trough. Washed every thing away. Wont fix it right away but
let bank settle some. Cut out & fitted brown plaid from
Warrens last Xmas. Will use same pattern for the pretty
material.
Fri. Dec. 27
Quite heavy rain today so we are glad we are not in
camp. Hoped Motion would bring mail but he wasn’t in office.
I expect home mail. Most finished brown dress. John at fence
again. Buck doesn’t trouble much these nights.
Sat. Dec. 28
Very heavy rain this P.M. & steady. At it
still. Every body in gardens. Lovely mail finally came.
Cards & letters galore & a huge 10 lb. cheese from
Major Dawson. Didn’t bake much nor clean because of mud.
Sun. Dec. 29
No rain. 3 mtgs today. We want to have mtgs. A.M.
& eve for two weeks or so. Asking especially that the
Holy Spirit will show our people the wrong there is in these
customs of theirs. If they will only be teachable I’m sure
they will soon be able to decide right.
Mon. Dec. 30
Finished washing before meeting. Not very many out
but the Spirit was there. John spoke so searchingly that it
seems they must see their mistakes. & try to make things
right.
Tues. Dec. 31
Just a sprinkle of rain but very dark &
threatening. Good talk this AM. I didn’t go over this eve as
no women come. I finished C Beths letter. Want to wash my
hair. Cut & fitted pretty material dress from Miss
Johnson but O! such a task! so slippery can’t cut straight.
[From back, Dec. 31.] This year has past so quick …
we see the end of another? The year has been full of the
Lords goodness to us. We thank Him. We do expect great
things from Him in the days before us. The native church has
had such a shaking up & we here are just about to ask
for a separation. There aren’t many who will stand true but
God can show them their mistake. Meetings are not very well
attended but the messages are searching & God will
answer prayer. I’m sure.
Where the devil
will attack next is hard to imagine. That he will continue
to try to break up the work is to be expected. Thank God
we can look to a stronger than he for our help. We still
have no car but we have each other & good health and
faith & trust & two loving sons at home. God is
very good to us. May we be faithful.F.M.S.
Diary 1929
[Inscription:] “A Merry Christmas to Florence, from
Lora. 1926.”
“Be
not amazed at life,
‘Tis
always been the mode of God,
with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfill,
In times & ways they least expect.”
From Mrs Guither
[From clippings:]
MY NEW YEAR PRAYER.
Dear Master, for this coming year
Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: “Teach me to do
The thing that pleaseth thee.”
A quiet lot in life is mine,
Made up of little things;
Teach me to do as unto thee
The duties each day brings,
Faithful in that which is the least
Dear Master, I would be,
Thus making all my daily work
“The
thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to please thee through this year
In every word I say.
Dear Master, take these lips of mine
And keep them day by day
From foolish talking, angry words,
And evil-speaking free:
Teach me, that I may ever speak
“The
thing that pleaseth thee.”
Not only what to do and say
Would I be daily taught;
I ask thee so to cleanse my heart
And purify each thought
That every thought and evey wish
May pure and holy be.
I want in everything to be
“The
thing that pleaseth thee.”
I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
“The
thing that pleaseth thee.”
- Unidentified.
[and probably from “Daily Light”]
Morning.
I will go in the strength of the Lord.
Ps. 71. 16.
Tues. Jan. 1
And now we begin again. If a poor beginning makes a
good ending we should close 1929 with a grand day for this
day has been most disappointing. A bad head and disappointed
in the natives & their response to the meetings as well
as to what Partari is asking. & then Shaffers want Johns
help to get them back & its hard to see thats best.
Barnetts did not get here. We’ll look for em tomorrow.
Wed. Jan. 2
Looked in vain for Barnetts. Feeling a bit better
today but not much pep. Worked at dress a bit & finished
boys letter. Meetings as usual. Have about given up B’s.
Perhaps things went wrong at home. Mulungit came. I paid him
part wages.
Thur.* Jan. 3
And about 5 P.M. they came & had a Mrs Kline
with them who wanted to get on to Nairobi & delayed
because car broke down. Mr. S. is taking her in in Mr.
Clarkes car. Mr C had supper here too. Jno only went to
meeting & said we’d have no more til Sun. & then
they were to say if they were ready for baptism.
Fri. Jan. 4
Mr. & Mrs. B staid in bed late. Ruth &
Willie are busy looking things over. Mrs. S. asked Mr C up
for roast mutton & Mr S didn’t get back so Mr & Mrs
B went over too but the meat was spoiled. Had music here
afterward. Lunch at C’s falls.
Sat. Jan. 5
Finally this noon we were by ourselves. This eve we
went to Clarkes. Had very nice time. “Rigoletto” gets nicer
each time its played. Baked & cleaned as usual.
Sun. Jan. 6
Long A.M. meeting. Not many of the Christians
testified, & we hardly know what to do. I had to lie
down all P.M. but was up for cafateria supper here. John
says many were out tonight & many testified. We read
letters & talked.
Mon. Jan. 7
Bridget helpt with washing. Mr. C. came up for stew
& dumplings. Good number out tonight. We had 4 oclock
mtg & intend to have each P.M. Evening mtgs continue
this week & Sat. There will be mtg of elders etc &
examination of some for baptism.
Tues. Jan. 8
Baked & ironed. Major Dawson, a Mr Walford, of
Kabete, Mr. Roach & Dr. Patterson came this P.M. to
inspect houses & gardens. They seemed fairly pleased
with what they saw. Jno was with the men so couldn’t come to
meeting. Very few out tonight.
Wed. Jan. 9
I called the women of the class. Not all came. I
excused the girls telling them they were not old enuf. The
only ones I feel we can pass are mother of Soibi & Mrs.
Gashisha. & perhaps Mrs. Mbaei. Others need school etc
or discipline. Mr. S. led mtg this P.M. Mr C. had cup of tea
and a bit more at supper table.
Thur. Jan. 10
Jno called his class. He doesn’t seem very well
satisfied about it tho. Hice mail tonight. Letter &
pictures from the boys. Lo’s passport picture & today
she is sailing if all went as planned. Shaffers got $250.
toward going home. Lo sends Geographic & has made me a
member.
Fri. Jan. 11
John had a letter given him this morning from the
folks here to say they were going to go to Dr. Arthur about
things. We can’t think what is wrong but we know some thing
is tying things up. We continue to pray. Crowd out tonight.
But we’ve decided its best not to baptise nor have communion
on Sun.
Sat. Jan. 12
Our house hold & Harry D. went to the bridge
& then walked down a ways & fished. Mrs B & I
sewed & talked. Had music tonight. I finished my dress-
just needs pressing. Then started letter to boys. B’s car is
lovely. We had an enjoyable day but for the heavy hearts
because of trouble in church.
Sun. Jan. 13
John was very worked up by mtg time this A.M. He
didn’t know what to say. When he said we’d baptise &
have communion & all should come that know their hearts
are right Tameno got up & said they (the elders) hadn’t
been asked & they knew something ab’t all the
candidates. We heard Mulungit was here (to back). [From
back, Jan. 13.] So Jno, Mr. B & Mr S went up to see him
& talk with him. The elders were all together there and
none would say anything. So they came back. Mr. B. led PM
meeting. John thinks its best not to go over tonight. It
seems so hard to know what to do. Their letter only said
they couldn’t teach him any thing. The Lord must undertake
in it all.
Mon. Jan. 14
Nolminangae and Bridget washed & we ironed.
We’ve about decided we’ll go to our Narok camp. where we
were with Davises & Kendalls. Mr. C. was on his way up
to supper last eve but a car drove in so he went back. Was
here to lunch & left afterward for Nairobi for a mo. or
so.
Tues. Jan. 15
We got away ab’t 8:30 & thot by 10 we’d be in
camp but we wandered around & finally ate lunch &
Jno shot a guinea fowl & we wandered some more, and
never did find our way down so stopt at Narok for gas &
came on to Ngiro & are camped below the bridge. Willie
caught one fish.
Wed. Jan. 16
Tried fishing this morning but no good so came back
& tried again for the road to River. The men went
together & after 2 ½ hrs. they came back & had found
the way down. We ate lunch & went & are catching
fish a plenty. Its very dry & dusty here.
Thur. Jan. 17
Had fish for breakfast & some 50 to take home.
Jno went for guinea but got none tho he shot several times.
We had lunch & then went home. Shaffers are all packed
ready to leave in the morning at daylight. Kuyoni started
yeast for me.
Fri. Jan. 18
Shaffers got off by 6:15. Mr. C. came in abt 5 so
asked him to supper. He saw S’s & said roads were very
rough. Baked & washed & ironed a few things. Have
things put together so wont take long in the morning. Sent
OlleShongo for mail.
Sat. Jan. 19
Got away by 9:15. Stopt under 2 big acacias for
lunch. Had lovely sight of giraffe. Got very close but
hadn’t my camera. At Quarantine made a mistake & took
lower road & found it much better. Got here by 3:15. Tea
& baths & meeting tonight. Not many here yet.
Shaffers are in camp. Mrs was ill from the shaking up. Is
better tonight.
Sun. Jan. 20
Dr Davis read letters of greeting from quite a
number of friends. The boys at S.S. also went to Davises
this A.M. & read letters & talked. Intended going to
native service but didn’t get finished. Called at S’s tent.
Nice communion service. No eve service. All are visiting.
Meals are lovely. Its nice not to plan them but just eat.
Mon. Jan. 21
Jno led early prayermtg. Mr. D. spoke on I Pet.
Very good. Mr Bryson speaks on Psalms tomorrow too. Mr
Johnston came in today. Meetings all as per program.
Meetings good but lack some thing. Enjoying the
meals very much. So nice not to have to think of
eats til its eating time.
Tues. Jan. 22
Lo should be getting to Gibraltar today. Dr. Arthur
was here today. Says Mulungit came to see him about work at
Ngong. He, Dr, wants to put a teacher there. M. has been
very sneaky about it all. Dr A. is going up Eldama Ravine
way baptising etc in Barnetts district. Its hard to know
what he is up to but it all looks very unfair.
Wed. Jan. 23
I took P.M. prayer mtg. Canon Burns spoke this P.M.
so helpfully again. Moody students & others had mtg this
eve. Nice letters from the boys again. Dr. Arthurs visit
yesterday has certainly stirred things up. But he is
determined to make the trip. Says he’ll be with us on the 12th.
Thur. Jan. 24
Mtgs. as per program but Mr Reynolds is not here so
the PM was given to talking ab’t how to provide for our
native teachers wages. Mrs Probst served tea. Womens mtg
this eve. Mrs Knapp spoke on Conf. Very helpful. Another
bunch of letters. One from Lora telling of Mrs Dreblorn
gasoline accident & death.
Fri. Jan. 25
Rained hard this P.M. I went to prayermtg but left
during business part. Its too hard to get the discussions.
Some thot allowances should be raised. so they did - $500.
each now. but the Lord knows we don’t need that
much. Mr. Farnsworth showed his pictures tonight. I worked
at Arith. all day & have ab’t finished.
Sat. Jan. 26
Business all day again. John didn’t go this P.M.
Every one is getting very tired. I started letter to Al
& the rest, Mrs Davis talked to the nurses etc this eve.
There was some discussion about our belonging to the Lake
Dist. It wasn’t settled.
Sun. Jan. 27
Jno took walk to the station. No cars going out for
sure. but some may come in & go back so will have to go
down & sit til one comes. I went to native meeting. Nice
service this P.M. Mr Barnett led. Mrs & I had little
service with Masai at Hospital. Praise service the eve Mr
Guilding led.
Mon. Jan. 28
Home again but O tired & foot sore! Jno & I
walked to station. Shaffers brot loads. Found one truck had
left ab’t 9. sorry we mist it but we had scarcely finished
our lunch when Patel truck came & left at once so we
were off by 3. & got here by 10. Walked from plain &
shoes rubbed so have 2 large spots like shilling.
Tues.* Jan. 29
Many came to greet us. Late breakfast & haven’t
done much. feet are sore & muscles too. Mr Clarke came
for supper. Gashisha’s cart went to bring loads. Elisa &
Nyakeiru each brot one too as they went first. I’m glad we
are here. Parmale seems to have taken care of things pretty
well. Jno worked at ram.
Wed. Jan. 30
Parmale washed a pretty big wash too. I rinsed
& hung up. Started sponge & stiffened tonight. At
Clarkes for supper. He came up in the car for us & took
us for a ride to the plain. Shot at a tommy but too far. Jno
worked at ram all day. Goes better now. Just last thing a
rag slipt in for him.
Thur. Jan. 31
Parmale & I both at ironing. Baked bread too.
Jno at road. Mr Clarke left for Nairobi. Hoped Motion would
bring mail but he did not return. Mbali & Soibi came
& we talked ab’t teachers. Guess we’ll keep Wambogo on
& I’ll have night school.
And already one month gone. Hard to tell what the
next will bring forth. God is permitting these things and we
can only pray it will bring glory to His name. Mulungit
hasn’t come yet so we don’t know what he’s doing. Good crowd
at prayermtg John said.
Fri. Feb. 1
Had prayer mtg with women but only 5 came. One can
feel it on all sides that something is going on. People
greet us & act nice but there’s something wrong some
place. M. is not here. Motion didn’t come today. Parmale
will go to Narok tomorrow.
Sat. Feb. 2
Parmale said he saw Mulungit & the Syabei
elders at Narok having a shauri. He didn’t know what ab’t.
I’m sure they are asking Scotch Mission to take this over.
All we can do is pray that God will work out His own best
will. and Satan may be defeated.
Sun. Feb. 3

Storrs Fox, Chaundy, 9 in all. Were ready to come home just
after 11 but car needed fixing. Got home 1. Singers were out
late last night too. No community dinner but races. Lots of
strangers here.
Thur. Dec. 26
Had thot of going out camping but its pretty rainy.
Found this morning that the dam had given way under the
trough. Washed every thing away. Wont fix it right away but
let bank settle some. Cut out & fitted brown plaid from
Warrens last Xmas. Will use same pattern for the pretty
material.
Fri. Dec. 27
Quite heavy rain today so we are glad we are not in
camp. Hoped Motion would bring mail but he wasn’t in office.
I expect home mail. Most finished brown dress. John at fence
again. Buck doesn’t trouble much these nights.
Sat. Dec. 28
Very heavy rain this P.M. & steady. At it
still. Every body in gardens. Lovely mail finally came.
Cards & letters galore & a huge 10 lb. cheese from
Major Dawson. Didn’t bake much nor clean because of mud.
Sun. Dec. 29
No rain. 3 mtgs today. We want to have mtgs. A.M.
& eve for two weeks or so. Asking especially that the
Holy Spirit will show our people the wrong there is in these
customs of theirs. If they will only be teachable I’m sure
they will soon be able to decide right.
Mon. Dec. 30
Finished washing before meeting. Not very many out
but the Spirit was there. John spoke so searchingly that it
seems they must see their mistakes. & try to make things
right.
Tues. Dec. 31
Just a sprinkle of rain but very dark &
threatening. Good talk this AM. I didn’t go over this eve as
no women come. I finished C Beths letter. Want to wash my
hair. Cut & fitted pretty material dress from Miss
Johnson but O! such a task! so slippery can’t cut straight.
[From back, Dec. 31.] This year has past so quick …
we see the end of another? The year has been full of the
Lords goodness to us. We thank Him. We do expect great
things from Him in the days before us. The native church has
had such a shaking up & we here are just about to ask
for a separation. There aren’t many who will stand true but
God can show them their mistake. Meetings are not very well
attended but the messages are searching & God will
answer prayer. I’m sure.
Where the devil will attack next is hard to
imagine. That he will continue to try to break up the work
is to be expected. Thank God we can look to a stronger than
he for our help. We still have no car but we have each other
& good health and faith & trust & two loving
sons at home. God is very good to us. May we be faithful.
