Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary – 1934.                                                                                Index

Dear Master, for this coming year
            Just one request I bring;
I do not pray for happiness
            Or any earthly thing;
I do not ask to understand
            The way thou leadest me,
But this I ask: Teach me to do
            The thing that pleaseth thee.

I want to know thy guiding voice,
To walk with thee each day,
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
            And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
            A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
            The thing that pleaseth thee.

Lost my big red Kerchief scarf.

Wed. Feb. 7

When we were ready to leave the caretaker came around with a guest book & got our signatures & then charged us Sh 5 each!!!! I believe it is a trick of his. Neys had been there 2 days before & did the same. Went thro Ft. Portal - found that Antoni had gone to Nairobi in ans. to telegram. Very disappointed in the place. Came on 40 mi & camped beside the road at Mubuku Bridge. Put up nets. Came 190 mi.

Thur. Feb. 8 Kabale

Had nice roads at first then took a short cut to meet the main Mbarara-Kabale road & saved ourselves 50 miles. Just before Kabale the road was very winding & narrow. We camp 12 miles out. Gov’t Camp but free to others when not used by Gov’t. Not like Nyanzi. Had lots of mosquitos in our net this morn. Lovely river at camp where we washed & took snaps.

Fri. Feb. 9 LAKE KIVU

Last nights camp was lovely. High & cold & the drive this morn was grand. Past Lake Bunyoni but we were way high up. Twas a wonderful drive thro the hills. Bot & roasted corn for lunch. At Ruchuru the official said go to Kivu first & when we return we go thro customs. The Lake is beautiful makes me feel like I do on board boat. Rocky shore. Nothing to Kisenyi but a hotel & deserted houses. Boiled green bananas for supper.

Can’t eat nearly all. Eng. mtg after supper. Jno led. Mr. Devitt not feeling very well. We take quinine most every day. That may be upsetting him.

Mon. Feb. 12

We had intended getting on to Bell’s but Devitt wanted to stay a day so we decided to have a picnic & all went out about 11 kilometers along the road we had come Sat. eve. Just got fire started under a shelter beside the road when it started to rain & kept it up all the time so we all sat in the car & under the tent to eat. Miss Fraas & I had nice visit. Played games this eve with the children. Jno not feeling well.

Tues. Feb. 13 Bells. [Oicha]

Got away about 9. Had very nice trip all along. It’s lovely from Beni to Bells - all thro the forest. Agnes just as always. made us so welcome. They are sharing their house with Dr. Beckers so they are rather crowded. We are in 2 rooms out by the school building. Have met all the workers: Dr. & Mrs. Becker & 2 children, Nurse Miss Smith, Mr & Mrs Keisling.

Wed. Feb. 14

Hard to know what’s best to do next. Devitt wants to go north but we can’t go very far on the money we have. This PM went to a Pigmy village & took quite a number of pictures. All had lunch together at Bells. Quite a table full. Their Field Director asked them to meet for prayer for these 3 days.

Thur.* Feb. 15

Had prayermtg again today. Jno led - but we dont go to the P.M. meeting at 2. Today’s rest was nice & quiet. Have decided to go on a 6 days safari to the place Cl. is to have his work. & they hope, other Westervelt boys. Thot we’d get off tomorrow but porters will come Sat. morn.

Fri. Feb. 16

Met again for prayer. This is the day thro out the mission. Cl & Mr Bell went to Beni on the motor cycle - ab’t 13 mi. Now we have changed plans again & are not going on safari. Not enuf time nor money. Mr D. got worked up ab’t something - don’t know what. Fixed over Cl’s mattress. Lovely music on Beckers phono.

Sat. Feb. 17

Went for a picnic to the big forest. Found a pretty stream where we ate and then went to a pigmy village. Found a few folks there & got some pictures. Took pictures of trees & the road. It’s all so beautiful around here. After super talked & I knitted. Am at the foot now.

Sun. Feb. 18

Took nice long walk after breakfast. Jno. Cl. & I. Can’t take many more walks together. Went to 11 oclock mtg. All at Beckers for dinner & supper tho Agnes prepared the supper. Rested all P.M. and wrote Raymond. Jno led evening service. Talked til late. Bad head so took quinine. Mr Bell not well either.

Mon. Feb. 19

I made Cl’s mattress cover & did mending. Had phono this eve. Have so much enjoyed our stay here & are loathe to go but must get off tomorrow.

Tues. Feb. 20 Bagoro    FMS Letter

Left Oicha ab’t 10 and at 12 got to a place where elephants had crossed the road. So lunched & then Mr D. & Cl. got some men to go with them & they got within 25 ft of 2 large ones. Got to Irumu at 4 & here to Senffs by 6:00. Very winding road & pleasant grassy hills. They have beautiful view of the Lake.

Wed. Feb. 21

Found out today we can go back via Aba & Rejaf & across Uganda. If we can somehow get word to Mr Bell to come sooner if he is bringing Chas H. then we can get on before the regular boat sails & so gain a day or 2 of time. Went to Kasenye to clear trunks thro customs. Had lunch under a tree & then an awful sand storm came. Sheltered in a building then got a huge fish for supper. Mud on way home. Men going for buffalo tomorrow.

Thur. Feb. 22 Blukwa.

Mr. Senff & the boys were up by 3:30 & off for buffalo. Got back just at noon. but tho they shot at some they killed none. Decided to come on here as Senffs said we could easily do it before dark. Left there at 3 but got here at 7!! Roads were muddy much of the way. Course every one here was surprised - we put them to a lot of trouble I fear. We sleep in Weber’s house as they are home.

Fri. Feb. 23 Rethi

Had a good look around at school & girls work. and all had lunch at Buyses. and as it was quite sunny & no sign of rain we decided to pull for Rethi. Were off by 3. Stopt at Djugu for gas. Used all Shs. & all francs we had. Got here to Camps as they were eating - not quite dark. Mr L. Buyse is here but goes home tomorrow. He thot we should not try walking to Kacengu the 18 mi. as its very tiresome.

Sat. Feb. 24 Kacengu.

Mr. Devitt decided he did not want to go so Cl drove & we left the car at Nyarembe with a Mr. Putman Outler & walked 12 mi. to K. As we got nearer some of the older men recognized John and how surprised they were to see him. We had quite a following when we got there about 4:20 very tired & thirsty. It was so hot walking thro the heat of the day.

Sun. Feb. 25

Mr & Mrs Lasse & 2 baby boys & Mrs King & Virginia May age 8 are here. Miss Levy was the girls worker but died Feb. 6 at Rethi. Attended the mtgs today & walked about some. Had service at Mrs. Kings - on veranda. Some more men came & others will come tomorrow. The nice brick house is built on the old foundation. with a large veranda added. Trees all abt - some that were here, others have grown. All houses are burned brick. Too hazy to see the Lake at all.

Mon. Feb. 26

Breakfast at Lasses. Took some pictures & filled camera with new film. They had just killed & cut up & fried a pig when we came in on Sat. so we are enjoying fresh pork. Dinner & supper at Mrs Kings. Went to school this P.M. and at 4 the old men came & young ones too - and women & girls. About 25 men who said they were here 20 yrs. ago. Some old women too. There wee over 100 in the whole crowd & after talking ab’t old times Mr. Lasse preached to them. & they listened. They never come to church. ‘Twas great to see them again.

Tues. Feb. 27 Rethi.

Got away before 6. So dark when we dressed that I put my dress on wrong side out & only discovered it on the path. Walked 2 hrs then ate breakfast. Cl. helpt up the hills so I wasn’t so very tired. Got to car by 10:15 & got here for lunch. Mr Bell has not come. We expect to go on tomorrow. Walked over & saw hospital & dormitory. Miss Halstead who translated N.T. in Lur spent eve here. Young folks playing Flinch.

Wed. Feb. 28

Finally got away about 9:30. Cl. was loathe to let us go & how I hated to leave him but Mr Camp took him with him in the truck, so the time wont be long til Mr Bell comes. We stopt at Austin Pauls for lunch. Got to Aru about 4:30. Some nice roads - so made good time. Spent eve on lawn in moonlight hearing Mr. Nicola & then the phono. Mr N. is jolly & has a fine voice.

Fri. Nov. 16

What a day! Milaun came ab’t 11 & went straight up stairs & into east room. No one saw him but girls in kitchen. Jno got him down at noon & he returned at 1:30 & pushed past me & went up, wrapt himself in safari blankets & refused to come down. elders came & carried him down. & put him into his bed. We lockt all doors but front and he entered there ab’t 7:30 & made for up stairs. Had gone to Miss G’s room in P.M. & when she called Jno he left. but this eve went back there & fought with men when they tried to get him out. We went to Narok & got D.C. & 2 eskaris. He held door but they soon got him hand cuffed & took him. Retiring most midnight.

Sat. Nov. 17

Mr Clarke came up for A.M. tea. He has a bran new car. will take us to Narok tomorrow. & we had supper & music there this eve. Mr Denning was there. Jno was down to lunch too. We are all quite unsettled and not accomplishing much. It is all so satanic & hard to understand.

Sun. Nov. 18

Miss Grindley didn’t sleep & is really ill today. Scudders are sleeping up stairs. This affair of M’s might take a bad turn for us so we are glad to have S’s here & hope the case will come off while they are here.

Wed. Nov. 21

Dad & Mr. S. went to Narok to see D.C. & find out what they could. Case cant be called before A.D.C. gets in from Safari. Next week end, perhaps. as D.C. is in it. He says he’ll convict on “house breaking” & let it go at that! We’d rather ‘twould be more severe than that. The Lord must undertake for us.

Thur. Nov. 22

They got off by 8. and now we are alone again. Girls are washing up bedding & rooms then I’ll dismiss Martha. 2 girls is not very satisfactory. Sitoya got mail but no parcel for Grindley & I wonder why not. Will send anyway on Sat. as I have several Xmas letters to go. Mr Clarke left yesterday on foot safari for mo.

Fri. Nov. 23

Got another shock today when there were only 8 out to school & was told 3 of the girls had been circumcised: Keneya, Ana & Rahele. Felt just awful about it. but better this eve. Then while sitting here writing heard a lion just outside & were looking out of the door & he passed not 50 ft away where the light from the door shone on him. Enemies of all sorts!

Sat. Nov. 24

The lion was around all night & even after sun up was grunting beyond S’s house. Just after breakfast we were called to see a dead one up near Kuyoni’s house. Had gotten some poison evidently. A young one but large. Took snap. Went to dead cow crossing. When we came back found Kashisha’s goats in the garden. finished most everything. caught 2. & he paid sh 2. Got exam questions from Denning.

Mon. Nov. 26

Lions still about. Lois washed I wrote Al air mail. Jno looking at & studying stars. It’s very bright tonight. Heard lions in valley. Elders are not satisfied ab’t my taking sh 2 for damage done by goats. Partly tied one mattress. Not such hard work. & makes them much better.

Tues. Nov. 27

At school time Sitoya came & said there is trouble - that the decision of elders to pay no fines no matter what trouble their cattle make is not right & he will stop teaching if that’s what they say. so there was no school. Mulungit is not in favor of the decision.

Wed. Nov. 28

Seems like I should accomplish a lot with no school. but I spend a good deal of time in the kitchen. The mattress seems very nice. have it on my bed & will tie the other soon. Prayermtg this P.M. Cloudy a bit tonight.

Fri. Nov. 30

Cleaned & sewed Asumanis shirt into a little suit. Hope it fits. Last eve while reading letters a hyena came up the edge of the hill. Twas still real light. There seem to be more than ever about.

We seem further than ever from going home. Our plans now are all for when Raymonds come. Am disappointed that school is not going on. but its the fault of the elders.

Sat. Dec. 1

We went down river - Lois too. She fished & I knitted & Jno cut & burned brush. started cutting a path along river under the rocks. Boys are still at school at Narok so we will drive over. Saw quite a lot come this eve. George wants a ride.

Sun. Dec. 2

Mtgs as usual. Good no. at School & hospital. Geo. & the others I had told could ride did not come so we picked up 5 others on the way. Letter from Miss Norton asking to come in Jan. for 2 wks. Studied stars til late but so clear.

Mon. Dec. 3

It seems this time of year is troublesome to keep school agoing. Sitoya has said nothing about going on so guess elders are not changing their minds any. Getting letters ready for we’ll send Wed. morn. Covered one peach tree with net & do hope we can save the peaches.

Tues. Dec. 4

Mr Clarke came up this P.M. He got back this noon. Asked us down to supper. Glad to go for Lois went home sick ab’t 2:19 - & my head has been bad all day. Enjoyed his dinner much. most finished my knitting while Jno made music.

Sun. Dec. 9

Communion. Sitoya wanted to stay for it so told him to go afterward don’t know if he did or not. We & native witnesses have to go to Narok tomorrow for Milauns trial. Quiet restful day. Guess they settled a few things yesterday. Jno decided on headman & chose Council of 10.

Mon. Dec. 10

Lois washed. We went to Narok. Took 6 natives along. We went in first & the A.D.C. had the natives later, so we came home. Scudders sent us a 7 lb. chest of tea for Xmas. Miss Moody sent some pictures - large to put verse on too.

Tues. Dec. 11

Mr. Clarke sent up some tommy & came up for supper. Baked bread etc. Made over an old coat of Jno’s for Mulungit - kahki. Lois & Geo will get shorts for him - he has only rags these days. Lots of threat but no rain.

Mon. Dec. 17

Andersens came in about 5. had had an awful time in the mud & rain. Were relieved to find it dry here. We are suggesting that they take our car & leave theirs. Earl & Jno are fishing by moonlight. Earl caught a nice big one before supper.

Tues. Dec. 18

They got away by 9:30 in their own car. Earl & Jno were both sick this morning. Jno did not get up much before lunch. Earl ate very little breakfast. Susana & the children made chains for decorating.

Wed. Dec. 19

Wonder if Earl is getting to town today. How well we remember a year ago. [difficult car trip back from Kijabe] It has been such a short year. and now how we wonder just when God is going to let us go to meet Raymond & Sara Barnetts may come thro here tomorrow then we’ll see Erik.

Such a heavy rain about 3 P.M. just after Mr. Clarke drove in. Now if we only get a few more days of rain things will begin to grow. This is Prayer Day so we went over the letter this eve. No one here is killing so will send to Narok for beef. Wambogo is trying to get folks to help fix school floor. Not many come.

Mon. Dec. 24

Fri. Dec. 28

How well I remember a year ago [camping with Claudon] & am almost sorry he isn’t here now. Cut out dress. Had to cut very carefully. Rainy this P.M. but not much. Headache. Yesterday Earl & Erik came ab’t 2. on way to Kjb. Had intended getting here last eve but got stuck in mud.

Sat. Dec. 29

Worked at dress. Lois got wood. Went to Clarkes for supper & music. Both very enjoyable. fitted dress & cut white collar. Susana sewing also & I helpt so didn’t finish mine.

Sun. Dec. 30

Sitoya went to Narok by himself. Very hot these days. Headache & not feeling well. Milk was turned this morning which shows even the nights are hot. S. brot mail early. Took walk up hill. Read.

Mon. Dec. 31

Lois washed & I made out report for A.I.M. & Ed. Dept. Sewed at dress - or rather unsewed for had to alter the sleeves. John is feeling ill tonight. It has been so hot again today. Paid Lois. Morima comes tomorrow.

And this shows another year has come to a close. Yes, Erik & Emily are out. and tho we haven’t yet had the report of the wedding, we think Raymond & Sara were married and if plans carried they are with the little boys of the home, in Florida. We surely hope they will both be out by next year this time.

The year has been terribly short for the trip to Congo & John’s sickness took up the first 5 mo. I don’t think any other has past so fast. We do thank God for J’s recovery and that we are both as well as we are. J. gets upset stomach & I have some headaches but are usually pretty well. The next big thing we are looking forward to is Raymond’s & Sara’s arrival and Claudon’s visit. May God direct & guide about it all. We want only His will.

Many people had figured that this year would bring back the Lord for his church but since He still tarries we pray we may be faithful in the work & do just that that will hasten His coming. Every thing does seem to be heading up that way. Every thing seems to be getting worse. Gov’ts are perplexed as what next to do. We know there’s no help but in God.

I do want to be faithful in every thing. especially in prayer. God is so good to us & we praise Him. May He guide us in every thing thro out the next year. He is able.
