Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary – 1925.                                                                                Index

[From inside front cover.]

All my life's plan in His molding
Not one single choice be mine.
       Let me answer, unrepining,
“Father, not my will, but thine”.

James 4:14

“Beneath the moonlight and the snow
        Lies dead my latest year;
The winter winds are wailing low

        Its dirges in my ear.
I grieve not with the moaning wind,

        As though a loss befell;
       Before me, even as behind,

God is, and all is well.”
                             - Whittier.

Thur. Jan. 1

Snowed all day. We old folks went to Mr. Kolps for supper. Went in sled. Another begun. How & where will it end. Mother little thot that she'd be with Him this New Year. He leadeth & may I remember & rest on that.

[From back of book.] Jan. 1, 1925.

Now another year has ended and a new one begun. What will it bring? It doesn't seem possible that there could be any thing of more pleasure or even more painful than the last had. Our delightful trip home and at the end of it all missing Mother. I just sit & think & think it all over and over. & it seems I must awaken & find her here. & I shall some day - awaken & find her & Him. Thank God for His goodness to us all.

It is impossible to have another year so full of so many things but whatever there is for us I know He is faithful thro it all. and I too want to be all He wants me to be. The past with all its pleasures and pains should make me better able to do what He has for me.

I didn't always abide in Him as I should. bad mistakes were made & I think I learned some lessons too. Everyone is so busy I know I have missed out a lot but just how to correct it I don't know. I want to be helpful to all & it seems it takes more time than I've got.

I do thank God for health for us all. He has done great things for John too. I do miss him - he's been away so long but I know he's far more content than he would be here where there's little to do. I would like to see more of Cora but it seems best for her to stay in Iowa now. I hope by spring we may have a home where we can go & settle. Alice has been very good to us & I do enjoy being here in the old home as it will no doubt soon be sold, but I don't think its awfully good for the boys here. tho they are learning many new things.

I'm way behind with my correspondence but I think I'll gradually get caught up. Am not going to read the Bible thro this year as here to fore but take it slowly & read the Numerical Bible with its explanation.

My prayer at this time is for forgiveness for past mistakes and very definite guidance for this years work. It is so important we should get the boys into the right school May God guide us very clearly in every way. We want Him glorified.

He leadeth me.

Lora had invited Guithers whole family for the day. Gustas left at 2 P.M. So tonight we are alone again. Tho that means 8 at the table. Card from Al says R. leaves Tues or Wed. Unpacked some today.

Sun. Aug. 9

Lovely quiet day. Went to S.S. & taught a class. Staid for preaching. Lora staid with children. Beths throat is swelled: looked like mumps but guess not. Wrote Alice. Jno Cl. Cora & I attended eve service. Our first Sun. in Cal. was very pleasant.

Wonder if R. is on the way by this time. Hope so. The folks got back about 5:30. My head is not good. Pretty hot today. Swept up stairs & put away some things. Wrote some cards & letters.

[From back of book.] Aug. 12, 1925

On July 28 Cora's family, Claudon & I left home & Hooppole for the west. I thot of but tried not to dwell on the fact that we would likely never live in the dear old home again. I thank God for what it has been to all of us & that we could enjoy it so long. the Ladies Club was meeting at Mrs. Mathises & came out to say a last goodby. Supper at Aunt Lorenes was good but sort o' chokey. It was hard for Alice but she was very brave. Today Raymond is leaving & now they'll be all alone in that house. The first time ever. We expect R. on Sat. morning.

'Twas so nice to visit at Charleys. Thats my first in his home. He now owns the hatchery himself, & seems well fitted for the biz. Would have done very well this year if he had not had to divide up.

Leaving there on Sun. eve for Solomon by auto we saw a wonderful sunset. Clouds all lined with beautiful cerise. The two days on the train were comfortable for we had a drawing room. Saw some beautiful scenery. but guess we passed some in the night. 'Twas all very interesting. Arrived here Wed. morning 6:20. San Bernardino. Loras & Jno came to meet us. We have all taken colds. It has been so cool nights. This promises to be an interesting place. Wonder how long it will be home.

Thur. Aug. 13

Zellers came about 10:30. Had a quiet P.M. and a drive to Arrowhead Hotel. After supper went to Band Concert. Suppose Edward & Raymond are rolling along this way. Wish I could see R just now.

Fri. Aug. 14

Washed & ironed even tho Zellers were here. Had nice visit & they left about 4 P.M. Edward came as expected & I suppose Raymond will be here in the morning. We 8 are going to walk down to meet him.

Sat. Aug. 15

And Raymond did come. So we are all here. God is good to us. He can't keep from thinking he should be at chores or something. I went down town 3 times today. $100. came from St Paul church. We do want a piano.

Sun. Aug. 16

We talked and discussed long last night – Jno & I. I must be more careful not to disappoint him. All went to S.S. So nice to all be together. In Hooppole Jno never went to S.S. Edward spoke very interestingly. Jno & I slept about 3 hrs. Every one tired. Bert spoke at Union Services & introduced Coras & us.

Mon. Aug. 17

Washed a whopper wash. Planning to go to Cahon Pass. Mrs Robert will take us Stauffachers. Raymond helping with painting some. Claudon dug under back steps getting ready for gas pipes.

Tues. Aug. 18

Jno & R got up early & painted so I did too & ironed. Got most all done. Ready to start by 11:15. A lovely place and what rocks. Got some pictures. Mrs. R. took us a roundabout way to come home.

Wed. Aug. 19

Cora & Edward went to the dentists at 8. Their pictures taken Mon. are fairly good. Faylon wouldn't smile for us when the photographer wanted him to. Mr. Boelter came & all went to Riverside but girlies & I.

Thur. Aug. 20

Tues. Aug. 25 Cora's sailed

Pretty late break. We walked down to the sea & got back for 11 oclock lunch & then to see Cora's off. They have nice rooms but small. Big crowd there to see them off. Geo. Mansharts son sailed too to India. Called on C.E.H. See back of book.

[From back of book.] Aug. 25, 1925

Such a full day. Sort o' sad to see Cora's go yet they were so glad to be off that one couldn't be very sad. From the boat we took Florence home & then Harry took us 4 to see Mr. C.E.H. at Garden Grove. And when we drove in he greeted us & said 'twas lucky we didn't come a day sooner as they were just out of quarantine. Beka has had infantile paralysis & tho she is recovering she wont be able to walk. She is very bright & the most of her body seems active but she can't move her limbs. Drs. give no hopes at all. It makes me feel so sad. Mrs. Youngken & another lady are there & Mr Johnston runs out. Then mission troubles are so serious – he feels awful about them so the poor man has much to contend with. We attended Band concert when we got back. 'Twas good but I felt so sad. Cora's are well on their way to San Fc.
