Memoranda.
We left dear Am. Nov. 1.
I was sick much of the time. Our crowd tho' all were perfect
strangers to me were all so congenial. We reached England in 7
days. Landed at Liverpool. Was very glad to get on solid
footing again. Miss Kale stopt at Liverpool to see Mr. Evans
people & I staid with her. The rest went to London. It
seemed so cold after landing. My throat was a little sore at
Liverpool and at London our rooms were so cold that it got
worse & when we went to a Dr. he said it was diphtheria
& soon the ambulance was waiting for me. I went to the
N.W. Hospital where I staid for 4 full weeks.
Miss Rosenstock was so
kind as to wait for me and the other people we knew, Miss
Parker-Brown & Mr & Mrs. Brodie were so kind. Miss
P.-B. called at the hospital sent me flowers & fruit &
in many ways made my stay so pleasant.
When I left the Hospital
Mr & Mrs Brodie so kindly had me come to their home from
Fri. to Mon. when we left for our boat “Burgermeister” which
sailed Dec. 13.
Miss Flanders is the only
other 2nd class lady and she was on the train that
we got onto in London. We spent Xmas at Naples. What a strange
Xmas it was. Had a very smooth passage so far. Several
passengers got on at Marseilles among others Mr & Mrs
Wallace & daughter. Very nice people go to Uganda.
January
1, Mon.
What a strange New Years day. Every one seems dull
and gloomy. The celebrating last night was awful. Doctor
& stewards were all so drunk they could scarcely stand
straight. Some of the passengers too – Had nuts & fruit
late last night but when drink was brot Miss R & I
excused ourselves & retired. I'm so thankful I was born
& brot up in a Xian land & family. My one resolve
for this year is to keep sweet & patient & be able
at the close of each day to say I'm closer to Him than ever
before. God helping me. Retired 11.
2, Tues.
Sewed at cushion. Wrote to Lora. Almost wish I was
with the one I was with a year ago. Alice. but then I
wouldn't be here so I'm satisfied. Read Ada's letter today.
Shower this P.M. Quite warm. Very calm sea today. Wish I
always felt so good. Retired 11.
3, Wed.
Roughest sea we've had. Mrs. Wallace, Dorothy and I
had lunch on deck – but ate dinner down stairs alright.
Think if we wouldn't get all the kitchen smells we'd get on
better. Finished Cora's & Lora's letters both
overweight. Had Marie's today. Passing St. Babelmandeb
tonight. Mailed Aden P cards too. Retired 10:30.
4, Thur.
Got to Aden at 9 A.M. Left 2 P.M. Wore our helmets
for the first time. Got letters from the boys. Seemed very
nice. Am glad we are getting so near. 2nd Officer
says we'll get to Mombasa on Mon. No one will be to meet us
that early but we'll not worry. Read Hulda's letter. Took on
coal & O we're dirty as pigs. Retired 10.
5, Fri.
Cool. Have had a very bad headache all day. Almost
makes me sick. Had Bec's letter containing our pictures
taken just before we left. Worked at cushion. Passed Cape
Gardifui tonight. Most too dark to see much but big cliffs.
Retired 9.
6, Sat.
Warm. Feeling much better. A pill taken with prayer
seemed to help considerable. Edna L's letter was so good
today. Started “Romona”. Get to Mom. Tues. early in morning.
A very disagreeable dinner tonight. Feel comfortable.
Retired 10:45.
7, Sun.
Last Sun. on board and the quietest & most
blessed of any. 118° in the sun but nice breeze so didn't
mind the heat. Read Elfreda's & Blanche's letters today.
Mama's only left. Beautiful moon light. Wonder what all
we'll do next sun. Retired 11:30.
8, Mon.
Beautiful day. Terrible accident tonight. Had had
boat drill & as the boats were being put back a sailor
fell overboard. 4th Officer jumped over board to
save him but we went too fast & they got separated. Both
were rescued after some time. Sailor broke his leg in two
places. Has large family so passengers took up collection
for him & for 4th Officer. Last full day out
& I'm not sorry. Wonder who'll meet us. Had things
packed for some time. Retired 11:30.
9, Tues.
Landed about 10 A.M. Mr. Bailey of C. M. S. met us
at the boat & took us thro' customs then to his home
where we are entertained. They are splendid people. We will
leave tomorrow for up country. Went for a nice walk. Took
pictures. Mombasa is a pretty place. Very warm however.
“Lizards” & cats our first African experience. Grand
night. Retired 11.
10, Wed.
Started up country at 11. A.M. Baileys &
Wallaces were at train to see us off. Our steamer chairs
were left on the steamer. Hope we'll get them. Stopt at Voi
for dinner tonight. These are such funny little cars. Much
like the English make but they have Am. engines. Miss
Flanders friend came to see her at coast and is on train.
Retired soon after dark. Retired 7:45.

M. decided to stay. It was so sudden we could scarcely
realize it. M. bro't the letter & staid awhile. J.
called him in but only a few words were exchanged. M. tried
to explain why but couldn't then left with not so much as a
word to any one. Had meeting this eve. and do not believe

6, Thur.
No word from Mulungit
today. We do wish we could speak with him but since we can't,
and perhaps it's well we can't, God must work by His Spirit
& we can only intercede with Him that He will give it him
in an abundant measure.
The boys, J & Mr R

10, Mon.
I kept 4 boys this A.M.
& 4 this P.M. so J. had 4 to work with all the time. We
like that much better. Had a note from Mr. Collyar this eve

17, Mon.
Such
a
day as this has been. Josiah Shanga and another boy came but
J.
wants more than we can give him. He
may
not stay. All the women from M's Kraal came over this
morning to persuade him to return & when he wouldn't
they not only cursed him but all the boys here. Some of the
boys are quite frightened. Massagondi has been causing the
rumpus. He buried a stone for each J & M. in M's hut at
the Kraal & now they are supposed to die in a few days.
M's mother was inconsolable but they talked with her alone
and she was better satisfied. She sat under a tree and
refused to go home but wanted to stay near should M. die.

started M's house. M & Shanga called this eve. Retired

J. tho't he couldn't work
so would write letters but he found so many little things to
do that he got no letters written. This P.M. worked in the
garden. Josiah & Tangki went to the Fort & got konzos
and vests so came into the P.M. class. Think I'll soon let
Josiah take that class altogether. Expected the boys up this
eve but they didn't come. We read. Retired 8.

& a Report of Nashville Conv. from Student Volunteer
Movement. Don't know who asked them to. Letter from Mr. D.
telling of Mr. Calleys awful actions. Am
so sorry for Mrs. C. He had left. No one knew where he'd
gone. All working in the garden today. Barthoili & bro.
were home over last night their folks moved today. Boys here
tonight for story. Wrote Hurlburt. Retired 9.
22, Sat.
Mended most all day. Got
can ready for corn meal which porters bro't from Nakuru which
Mr. Tjader had order then gave to us. It's good but rather
coarse.
J. fired the swamp along
the garden. Smoke came up here toward the last. They finished
the bank to shut off the water and it works fine. J is tickled
over it. Bathed. Retired 9.
23, Sun.
J.
lay
in the hammock. I read aloud both A. & P.M. then this
eve finished “Knights of 19th Century”. Read pamphlet from
Aunt A. “Ambassador” edited by Law. Has a write up in about
my stopping in London & sending a clipping from English
paper about his meetings at Madison MO.
Ridler led meeting &
staid to tea. M. was called to his Kraal yesterday as all
women & boys wanted to make peace. Retired 11.
24, Mon.
It seems as tho' we're in
for all sorts of trouble. We knew this A.M. that something was
wrong for after recess the boys did scarcely any school work
& when I excused M. at 11 as he had asked – They all left.
This eve when they came up for their Bible story it got out
that yesterday they had stolen a sheep & eaten it. The
four concerned in the taking were at once taken to the Fort.
R. & J. took them. They tried to get away but couldn't and
are now shut up 'til Collyar returns. Loiyo, Olesia, Thoebe
& Kusi were the ones. Hope Thoebe will come back penitent.
M. staid with me while they went. It's awful. Letter from Aunt
Rene & P.C. Lora. Retired 10:45.
25, Tues.
Seems queer to have so
few in school. We went to the Indian to get a few things and
found that Collyar had returned so went to see him & had
tea. He is very much knocked out. Cross as a bear. Saw our
boys outside of prison. M. says Loiyo & Ollesaiya are the
head ones. They may all get some punishment. M. was up this
eve.
Wrote
Wenger.
The ants are
working in the writing table. It's awful. Retired 9.

28, Fri.
Heard the sentence of the
4 had been given 20 Kibokos [hippo-hide whip] & 3 mo.
prison. We think that's too much but suppose as Collyar is
sick he felt indifferent about it. We are sorry for Thoebe
especially.
Have been talking over
Josiah today and have about decided to send him & his
friend away. He seems to have a bad influence. Is very jealous
and sauces Mulungit awfully even right before John. Received
Lora's, Earl & Della's, Feucht's & Dorothy Ringels
pictures today. Lora's is so good. 'Most lonely for her.
Letters too. & Journal. Wrote Miss Egerick & Olive
Keene. Retired 10.

1, Mon.
Got up at 5. Hussled
around & got off before seven. Beautiful morning. Walked
til the crossing of the River then waited over 3 hrs for the

spot to camp. The river forms sort of a horseshoe bend &
we are on the peninsula. River on three sides. Very fine. Am
tired tonight & well much to my relief. Read & Retired

didn't suffer much. Went out with J this P.M. but it started
to rain so Barth. & I came back. Wrote at Cora's letter.
Sat by the fire tonight. Barthoili found some honey this P.M.

Home again. J.felt so ill
this A.M. that he could scarcely get around. The men cut a few
more poles & we decided to pack up & come home. We
bro't two men along the rest to come tomorrow with the rest of
the loads. At 11 we decided to come, by 12 we were on the way,
by 4 we were here - “Decide & act.” J's motto. His
temperature is quite high. Gave him a good sweat. Am quite
tired with the walk & getting him settled. Retired 8.

tried to write but couldn't he is so restless. The men came
from camp this eve bringing the rest of the things. A little

Feels much better gets restless toward evening.
No mail. Ridler went to
the Fort to look at Collyar's garden and help fix things. Got

They are killing only goats lately.
Mended. Massaria washed.
Very windy. Retired 8:15.
10, Wed.
John was quiet today.
Rather dosey all day. Ridler came in for prayerm't'g tonight.
Talked over the victory thro' prayer at Kijabe & the
manifestation of the Spirit presence and tho't it possible
that that would be the only way we could have power. Read much
today. John was up but didn't go out 'til this evening took
short walk. Retired 9.

Got up quite early. J.
did little at the packing and it shows it for we've forgotten
many things. Plates for instance and tea pot. Also J's good
Kahki coat. We have a nice camping place. Nice clear stream
here altho the Pasi is very red. Got here about 1:30. No
difficult march and John feels fine. Will try to get early
start in morning. Retired 7:30.
16, Tues.
Started on the march at 6
and walked – with only short rests – 'til 4:30. Had no idea
this place was so far. Got very tired and John got very stiff.
My right leg is quite lame. Our march planned for tomorrow is
short. This is very hilly here. Beautiful. The Gwaso Ngobit is
clear & cold about as large as G. Narok. Wouldn't have
minded the walk if it hadn't been so windy but 'twas hard
walking. Retired 7:15.
17, Wed.
Got started early as
yesterday and got to Gwaso Ngiro in good time. Masaria toted
me across and John got to the middle on stones then M wanted
to help him but got over balanced and both went in. We started
for the next stream and when half way it started to rain very
hard & got cold. The boys got fire started but some were
most frozen. It rained hard until 5:30. Mulungit, Barthoili, J

One year ago yesterday I

Maragwa River valley. Have nice place to camp. Porters didn't
come until late so got quite chilled. Saw mountain plainly
tonight. Killed the sheep Mutunyinge gave us & which we
have bro't all the way to eat. Wrote at Mama's letter.
Tomorrow over mountain. Retired 7:30.
23, Tues.
Made the mountain today
but 'twas an awful climb. Nice coming down but tho't we'd
never get up. Tho't we'd get there about 10 & 'twas after

provoking.

and the smoke was bad. We just got the tent up before it
started to rain hard. We say we came thro' fire & water to
get to Kjb. J. has taken some cold so crawled right into bed
with the hot water bottle on his chest. Only 2 hrs. from home
& we'll get there in a hurry in the morning. It's so cold

all over. Some of Miss Boehnings things were with mine. They
opened our boxes at Phila. which seems very strange and so got
things all mixed up and Miss D. not being here we don't know
what she got for us and what for herself. The folding dresser
is very fine and very convenient. Folds up so nicely. No nails
nor screws to put in. Have decided to eat & sleep in our
tent. Alta & Miss Hope sleep in a tent out in the park
near us & will eat with us. Meeting again this A.M. This
eve J & I were down at Reibe's. J & Mr. R. are fixing

6, Tues.
Had intended going up
onto the hill where orphan house is being built & have
lunch at 10 there but it rained all the time. We were busy
with writing and getting plants together. Mrs. Reese went to
the Station with us and met Mr. R. there & we were
together on the train. The little native girls Flossie &
Agnes came to station. When almost at Naivasha a large herd of
cattle were crossing the track and the train cut one right in
two and two were thrown to the side. They were Masai cattle.
The porters were waiting for us & seemed glad to see us.
We are glad to be started back. Camped on the camp grounds at
Naivasha. Retired 7:30.
7, Wed.
We left Naivasha about
6:30 & came to the foot of the mountain. Had one or two
small climbs to make otherwise 'twas all plain. After we got
to bed last night I remembered that we hadn't put in the tin
of burned bread which Miss Gam. fixed for us for coffee of
which J is very fond. Tonight we burned a piece and had some.
Very good. Tho't we saw a rhino today but didn't. Camp is fine
tonight very near a river. Had good path most all day. Gov't
road. Retired 7:30.
8, Thur.
We
found
when we started that we had quite a long walk before we got
to the mountain. Much mud & water to go thro'. The
mountain was long but not steep. At the top we found a large
plain & a very cold wind. Had a long distance of winding
about hills before we finally came to this side where we
could see Nyeri hill. We
lunched near the house of a white man whose business is to
stock all these streams with fish. My left foot – heel &
toes is very sore. Are camped in the bamboo forest. Lots of
pinching ants around. A nice place but damp and cold. Hope
to get to Nyeri tomorrow. Got Bamboo & Yellow Rasp.
roots. Retired 7:15.
9, Fri.
Started
rather
late this morning but had a beautiful path all the way so
came very fast. Had heavy frost where we camped last night
& was very cold. Are camped tonight on
second hill from Nyeri. A very nice place. Will stay 'til
Mon. morn. at least. Think we can get some good chickens
here and eggs for 2 pice. Stopt at Catholic Mission but they
wouldn't sell any. Much warmer here tonight. Mulungit &
J. went to a near Kraal tonight but J. didn't understand
what was being said & returned before M. so we don't
know the result of their visit. Many large boys want to go
with us but we want smaller ones. Boys caught a partridge
for us this morning which we had for supper. My feet are
very sore tonight. Retired 8.
10, Sat.
John & Mulungit went
to Mr. Mc Dougal's (a settler) and got some Rhame fiber. I
wrote to Zeller & Father Staffs. This P.M. they went for
& got chickens. 15 big & 4 little ones also some eggs
at 2 pice a piece. Almost wish tomorrow was Mon. Took a walk
this eve. Had a time about the porters. They wanted to go home
so J. said all but 4 could go & all went leaving 3
brothers. Then when J wanted some to go for bananas they said
they weren't working for him but would call their brothers.
Didn't see any all day. Made boxes for the chickens. I bathed
& napped this P.M. Retired 8.
11, Sun.
J., Mulungit & I went
to a Kraal about ½ hr. away where a shauri was to be held
about finding out if any men & families wouldn't come
along. Another meeting was to be held too so we went back.
They said they'd let us know tonight. Stopt at a near Kraal
for eggs but found none. Read in “Sandy” Miss Schneider's
book. Slept this P.M. A few bananas were bro't by one of our
porters. All he could find. A rhino around the tents last
night frightened the boys & disturbed us. Doesn't seem
much like Sun. A year ago was my first day in the London
Hospital. Walked. Retired 8:15.
12, Mon.
Over
slept
so all was hurry & commotion 'til we got started.
Walking went fine and we would have gone to the next steam
if the porters hadn't been so slow. Are camped at first
stream after crossing Gwaso Nyiro. Mulungit had an awful
time to get the porters to hurry. Some came in after dark.
Are not very tired tonight. Easy walking
with wind on our backs. Other people with loads of food are
along. Our old men are usually first on hand. Retired 7:45.
13, Tues.
Got
a
fairly good start this morning. Ate lunch at Gwaso Ngobit. A
few porters came while we were there. Finished reading
“Sandy”. Are camped tonight on the Sugaroi River first after leaving the Ngobit.
The distance between the two didn't seem very long this
time. My feet are very tired tonight. Chickens seem all
right. Many of the porters didn't get in 'til after dark.
Rained a little. Barthoili keeps on our heels. Colder
tonight. Retired 7.
14, Wed.
Left camp same time as
yesterday morning. Took our lunch with us. Ate at Pasi. My
feet are sore. Have small shoes on and pathes are hot. Met Mr
Collyar just starting out. J carried me across the Narok as we
didn't want to go up to bridge for we came around the hill
instead of over. Found 15 letters & papers waiting. Mr.
Ridler has lame back. How nice to get back. Chicks are OK.
Sleep on the cots tonight. J will make the bed soon.
Everything topsy turvey. Retired 8.
15, Thur.
Didn't finish reading all
my letters. Lora was married Sept. 18. Worked hard all day. J.
made a bed; used the webbing & seems alright. Moved books
& carpet into tree house. Set up the bureau. Got most
every thing packed away now. The bed room looks fine. The
bureau is so handy. Things in the garden have grown fine. Mr.
Ridler seems little better. We are very tired tonight. Rained
a little. River is very low. Easily banked now. J. is anxious
to work at it. Retired 7:30.
16, Fri.
This
morning
cleaned the dining room. J. planted roots & cuttings we
bro't. Wanted Nthombi to wash but he was busy. Barthoili
wanted Rs. 10 for what we asked him to do so we said he
could go. Lekoja would make no amends for all the food he
took so he left
too & Noi left while we were gone so we have but the two
left. Nthombi does all we ask him to & gladly.
Wrote Kijabe &
Leather P.C. to Flossie Minch Southworth. P.C. leather from Al
today. Started to read Days of Mohammed. Retired 8:15.

some
corn for coffee. Got very good. Baked a cornbread which
suits the 'boy' fine. Got letters ready for Ridler to mail.
Rained hard tonight. Both bathed. J. played a long time. I
read. We get so sleepy we can't read long. but awaken quite
early. Retired 8:15.

Very rainy all day, and
so cold. Mr. Ridler had dinner & supper with us. His back
is improving. John led the P.M. meeting. Read & wrote to
Rillings. Haven't seen such steady rains before in Africa.
Napped this P.M. Retired 8.
19, Mon.
Work
began
in earnest today. Up at 5:30 breakfast at 7. Mulungit comes
in from 9 to 11. Language Study from 8 to 9. After dinner
Nthombi comes in at 1 & M. at 2:30 to 3:30 or 4. More
rain. We printed pictures tonight. Most got
very nice. 78 in all. Wrote to Miss. Mess. & Miss Gam.
J. & men are busy in garden. Retired 10:30.
Very
rainy
all day. The men worked very little. Mulungit was with J.
all P.M. Nthombi did his work alone. Wonder when
we'll ever get a chance to wash the clothes. Started Mama's
Christmas letter. Mulungit was up this eve & started the
story of his life for J. Printed some P.Cs. Heard today mail
only leaves once a week and comes the same. Both on Sun.
Retired 8:30.
21, Wed.
Quite pleasant all day.
No rain at all. Nthombi washed the white clothes. I did much
of it. Baked bread. Think it's pretty good. Printed quite a
number of pictures. John is encouraged about the garden again
this eve. Was discouraged this morning. It rained so much that
every thing was covered. Am tired tonight. John led
prayermeeting. Retired 9.
22, Thur.
School
work
as usual. Nthombi is so ignorant. It seems as tho' I'll go
wild if he doesn't soon do better. But I must be patient.
Toned pictures. Mr.
Ridler shot a hare & a paa tonight. We had a hare today
that he got this morning. Wrote at mama's letter. Mulungit
wasn't up tonight. Retired 8.
23, Fri.
It doesn't seem possible
that a week of school is already past. There's quite a
difference in teaching one or two and eleven.
Nthombi
washed
the colored clothes today. It makes him very tired. I toned
or rather fixed the post cards. They look nice. Mail in
today. Got quite a lot. Comes in on Fri. & goes on Sat.
Wrote Mrs Schaeffer
Fairfield, Ill. Retired
8:15.
24, Sat.
Finished Mama's letter
put it into a long blue envelope. Sent 12 post cards &
about 40 Kodak pictures. Took all A.M. and part of P.M. to
finish all up. This P.M. bathed & fixed cloth in all the
windows 'twas coming loose. In the garden they have struck a
white clay which John thinks will make good sun dried bricks
for walls. Hope it will. Had some of the paa but I don't care
for it. Retired.
25, Sun.
First thing after
breakfast went to Massagondi's Kraal to see the Chief of the
Arondilla tribe who is visiting there. They have 5 camels
& he has 30 old men with him. Came to see Collyar but he
is gone so they are waiting for him to return. They came over
with us to see things. Seemed to enjoy the tea we gave 'em.
Most of 'em drank 4 or 5 cups. They don't want any presents
but white cloth. We gave them beads & umbrella. Will come
again tomorrow to have me sew their white cloth (5 yds) we
gave 'em. Headache. Read a little. Retired 7:15.
26, Mon.
Mulungit went to
Massagondis this morning so he had no lessons. Nthombi was
frightfully trying this P.M. I never encountered such a
disposition. Hope I'll never have another boy like him. He
completely upset me today. Boys at M's Kraal are having a fuss
& M went over yesterday & staid last night. He looks
very tired today. Wrote Mrs Evans tonight. Retired 8:15.
27, Tues.
The Errondilli people
came again. I got two pictures of them. Both I hope will come
out good. Also took one of John and M. Tried to take one of
the swamp but it didn't go well. Washed baked bread and coffee
cake. Only had about ½ hr of school this P.M. Wrote to Agnes
H. this eve & enclosed picture for the little girls also
Makaus. [unclear] J & M working at songs. Retired 9:30.
28, Wed.
School work went much
better today. Everything went better. I led prayerm't'g
tonight. Finished Mrs. Rhoads letter. Mr. Collyar returned. We
hope our friends from Errondilli will return home without
calling again. Suppose there are many tired people at home
tonight. Retired 9:30.
29, Thur.
How
different
this Thanksgiving has been than last. Mr. Ridler had dinner
with us after shooting a rabbit for us. Had a raisin pie and
other good things. Fixed the rabbit as J's mother always
does. They both worked in garden all day. We
had
no school as Mulungit went to see about a half sister of his
that came in with the Kikuyu & they wanted her to stay
here. She went back before they got her. Mended all spare
time. J & M at work again tonight. Retired 8:45.
30, Fri.
Had school all day. Short
session this morning as a number of boys came. bo't milk
today. 1 bottle and it was fine. Hope 'twill always be so
good. Worked at mending. Two letters from Kijabe and the
Chronicle came. J. has an inspiration for a pump. J called on
Ridler after supper. He doesn't say when he's going.
December
1, Sat.
It doesn't seem possible
that we've started the last month for this yr. But so it is.
Washed my hair. Mended.
Finished Lora's letter.
One night I told M. how
when our fathers want a girls beau to go home they wind the
clock & now he refuses to go unless I wind the clock. He
catches onto things so quickly. Milk wasn't good today. Wont
take it again when it's so. Retired 8:15.
2, Sun.
After breakfast had boys
meeting then went for a walk to the prisoners gardens.
Collyars is fine too. Lovely peas. This P.M. J & R. went
& met Mr. C. and all came here about 4:30 & had tea. I
read. My head aches again. Seems as tho it might be the sun
that causes it. Had m't'g after supper. Retired 8:30.
3, Mon.
Had
school
as usual. Mulungit went for buttermilk but couldn't get any.
Kikuyu & boys are short on food. Work in the garden is
discouraging. The men wont work 'cause they are hungry. Have
money but wont buy food. Nthombi
washed. Some boys here but didn't bother much. J. very tired
tonight & M. didn't come. I started letter to Mrs Link.
Long walk. Retired 7.
4, Tues.
Before breakfast we
decided not to keep the Kikuyu longer than today. Garden was
full of water so J. tho't they'd better leave it. He worked at
a new W.C. had two men helping who fired the brick kiln and
had a day to make even Rs. Got a sheep for the men tonight and
paid off all but 5 and will go at garden again. Food came too
so all feel fine. Finished Mrs L's letter. Retired 7:45.
5, Wed.
All hands in the garden.
The work is hard and disagreeable but J. feels as tho'
something must be done. The men seem willing to work
hard since their stomachs are full.
M. seems to have his mind
on something besides his interests here. I do hope
we'll not be careless about his needs. He keeps asking for Rs.
10 a month and food & clothing besides. Wont tell what he
wants to do with the money tho: He seems far from being as
satisfied as he was at first. Ridler led mt'g. Retired 8:45.
6, Thur.
Garden work is more
encouraging. M & J planted peas this eve. Last eve put in
the bulbs. Am intending to spend from 4 to 5 P.M. in the
garden. I have had headache every P.M. since Sun. Can't
understand why. Killed a big snake in the bushes near the tree
house this noon. Darned most of R's socks. J. is busy with
Masai songs copying both music & words. Retired 9.
7, Fri.
Not an extra large mail
in today but very good. Nice long letter from Lora from
YoChow. Good one from Mama too. Planted sweet corn and watered
things. Haven't had rain for a long time. M. acts rather
strange sometimes. Keeps wanting money and seems bent on
something. Here again tonight and working.
Wrote class letter. Not
many letters to send out tomorrow. Spend an hour or two before
supper in the garden. I like it. Retired 8:45.
8, Sat.
Married 6 months!
Celebrated by dressing up and having our pictures taken.
Ridler took us. Developed them tonight but don't look well.
Don't know what the trouble is. Look very scratched & no
depth to them. Worked at Mrs. H's apron. Ridler brot his
plates over to develop too. M. asked for three days to have
his back doctored. Would be here for school. Retired 10:45.
9, Sun.
Mulungit gone all day. J.
seems satisfied to lie around today and isn't always wanting
to go somewhere. Walked to prisoners gardens this A.M. and to
ours this P.M. Read until head ached. Ridler led meeting at 4.
Staid for tea. J. slept most all P.M. yet complains of being
sleepy now.
Took short walk after
supper. Got up very late this morning.
10, Mon.
Nthombi was all in a stew
because M. hadn't come but had sent his clothes with another
boy. We were anxious too for he didn't come until noon. but
then he was happy as ever and went about his work as tho
nothing had happened & I don't believe he knew anything
about N's report. He has a very bad cold. Watered trees and
planted potatoes in garden. Nthombi washed. Sun hot & few
clouds. Started letter to Al. J. at Masai songs. Retired 8:30.
11, Tues.
Had good session of
school today. M's cold makes him glum and uncomfortable.
Planted corn tonight. J. worked hard today in the ditch. I
wish it were finished. Took coffee down for the men to drink.

supper & will eat here 'til he leaves. Retired 10:15.
13, Thur.
All hands at work in

Nthombi because of carelessness broke a gold band individual
bread plate. He seems very careless of late. Ridler seems to
enjoy his meals here. Shot a large Spur goose today. Will have
it Sun. Wrote Mrs. A. Evans and Grace Switzer. Retired 9.

gravy. 'Twas very good. Raw tomatoes & lettuce with
mayonnaise dressing too. J. & Mr. R. both ate heartily.
Took our usual walk to prisoners gardens and back. Lots of
water in our garden again because of rain. J seems a little
discouraged. I wrote Alta's letter & fixed the Kahki suit
of hers & blue apron for Mrs & big red kerchief for
Alta also onion. Retired 8:30.
17, Mon.
Mr. Ridler got started
about 9:30. It seems sort a' quiet without him. Took all but
three of our men so J didn't work in garden but at W.C. Tore
down the old one. Has two sides done. So much nearer &
handier. Got late before Nthombi could start at washing so
left it 'til tomorrow. J & I have corn coffee every A.M.
& P.M. instead of drinking cold water. Wrote Mrs Burgi.
Retired 8:30.
18, Tues.
Nthombi washed. School
went well. J. finished the walls of W.C. & while men put
grass on roof he went to the garden and spaded and replanted
banana trees.
Nthombi broke big plate
gold band. He seems so careless. Wonder where Ridler
camps tonight. M & J. at work. Started letter to mama.
Retired 8:15.

heliotrope, lily-of-valley, horseradish & chives. Wrote at
mama's letter a little.
M & J had a talk
after business stopt tonight. M. is such an interesting
fellow. Retired 8:45.
22, Sat. Al's 24
birthday.
This eve about 7 while J
& I were quietly reading we suddenly heard a crackling
& crashing down in the swamp like an enormous fire or
whirlwind of some sort. J. went to the door and after
listening awhile decided it was elephants getting into the
garden. He didn't fire off the gun at once thinking he might
call some of the eskaris but finally did. We heard them leave
and then M. & Nthombi went down. Said they have done lots
of damage in potatoes but pulled up only one hill of corn. Are
anxious to see where they came from and what they did. Could
see black objects but not distinguish anything. Not enough
moonlight. Retired 9.
23, Sun.
First thing this morn.
went to garden and found this end quite badly torn up. 7 roses
torn out by roots & lots of things steped on & broken.
Most of the beets pulled & eaten. 3 large ones at the end
left for seed were badly tumbled up. Put two back in just to
see what they will do. Half of potato patch all rooted up.
Came thro' eucalyptus & broke some. Wonder they did no
more damage. The spring isn't working right will have to do it
over. J & M went to Kraals this A.M. m't'g with boys at 2.
Story from picture this eve. Had usual walk to prisoners
gardens. Retired 8:30.

with the men. The boys helpt me. Watered everything well.

First I've baked since here. J. is very tired tonight and I am
too. Suppose the folks are very busy getting ready for tonight
& tomorrow. Retired 6:45.
25, Tues. Merry Xmas.
Well this morning we
tho't we'd not have much extra but before we finished
breakfast a nice bunch of bananas came and just after M. bro't
a little lamb for us to roast. How surprised we were and glad
too because of the motive. While getting that ready the Indian
came with three big plates. One had two large pineapples
another 6 mangoes & the other a fancy cake surrounded with
fig, raisins almonds & another dried fruit. Lots of Xmas
cards too. So had a regular Xmas after all. I had bad spell of
'M. headache' all day. Boys here tonight for a big feed of
rice, roast, bananas & peanuts. Nthombi stored lots away.
Retired 9:30.
26, Wed.
Had school today. The
boys don't like to have long vacation. Wonder how many people
at home are sick today. Mulungit is not well this P.M. &
for some reason or other I have awful headache. J worked at
dipping water most all day and worked in garden yesterday too.
The more steady they work, the less must be done twice.
We planned what we'd do
another year – have program and a regular Xmas. The boys
enjoyed themselves very much last night. N. doesn't seem any
the worse off even tho he did eat an awful amount. Too sick to
do anything. Retired 7.
27, Thur.
M. feels alright today.
My headache is gone but eyes & head feel heavy & sore.
Started a letter to Lora. Mulungit came up for work. J. worked
at water & cut grass. The work there is going fine. School
work went well. M. told us tonight of N's plans which are to
earn enough money for a cow or two then go & live with a
man who he claims is his father but isn't really. Just wants
N. for herdsman. We may not teach him longer if that's true.
Take a few min. each morning for Masai reading to M. Retired
9.
28, Fri.
Are teaching the boys the
beatitudes in Masai.
A little local mail. Xmas
card from Atwoods. Letter and box of gelatine suspenders from
Johnstons. No money but if we don't have it we wont spend it.
I fixed J's & my baby pictures in light blue pass a
patoute.
M. went for mail &
set J's watch with clock at Fort for both clock & watch
stopt. We were ½ hr. slow. J. cutting & firing the grass.
Rained a little tonight. N. has the picture fever and is
fixing up the cookhouse. Am surprised at his good taste in
arrangement. Finished Lora's letter. Retired 9:15.
29, Sat.
A week ago tonight we had
our callers. Washed my hair today. J. cut at grass this A.M.
& watched & helped men work at bank. A fine morning,
nice day and a beautiful evening. Full moon I think.
Straightened & cleaned up in general. Fixed seeds &
dried apples. Worked at school work etc. M. up for work.
Things in the garden are
growing so fast. The day lily & clematis after their hard
fight are growing fine. How fast these weeks pass. Soon
another year will be in the past. Worked at school work.
Retired 9:15.
30, Sun.
Had a quiet nice day. Got
up early and had a walk before breakfast. Beautiful morn. fine
all day. Took book & went along swamp to our old ant heap
& tree & read. This P.M. lay on the bed & read. At
2 had m't'g with boys then a walk and as we were coming back
met our Am. friend who came up & had lunch with us. We
walked part way back to station with him.
The last Sun. in this
year. It doesn't seem possible. M. came for stories about
pictures. Retired 9:30.
31, Mon.
The last day of this
year. Work went on as usual. Nthombi washed. Was sick this
P.M. so didn't come to school. J. worked at cutting grass all
day and tho' his hands are sore he declares he's not tired.
Watered a little in garden. Weather looks threatening. Started
Mrs. Owens letter. M. didn't come up so J. was ready for bed
early. Our Am. friend did not call today as we expected. Seems
so cold & damp – we don't care for rain until garden is in
better shape. Retired 7:45.
Memorandum
The year is finished – in
the whole it has been the happiest year of my life. Tho' every
change took me farther away from dear ones at home and many
goodbyes were said since here & yet I have actually
entered the work to which I have been looking forward for so
long.
I have taken one of the
most important steps of my life. It was taken in Christ's name
& with His sanction and blessing. What could make me
happier than to know that we are in His will and doing His
bidding. We are very happy tho only in a two room house but we
are satisfied in one another and in Him.
If people at home or if I
myself had known all the comforts one can have here I &
they would have worried less and bothered less about many
things. God leads the way. We need not fear.
Altho I've kept a diary
so long I intend now to change to a Journal. There are things
that will want recording and yet from henceforth there wont so
many changes come in.
What has been done or
left undone cannot be changed. All is recorded in Heaven. May
the coming year show much improvement.
“The world is wide
In time & tide
So do not hurry
and God is guide
Whatere betide
So do not worry.”
What this little book
contains of joys & sorrows, struggles & smooth
sailing, may never be seen by other eyes. Yet it has been a
comfort to record them. God has kept a better record for which
we praise Him and are happy to leave ourselves in His hands
for the next 365 days knowing all will be well at the close of
that time if left to Him.
May many blessings attend
the paths of those who are so interested in us here and
especially Mrs. Brodie whose gift this book was. May God be
pleased to send blessing without measure to all His children
during this entire year. “Our God is able.”
