Florence Minch Stauffacher Diary, 1906                                                    Index

Memoranda.

We left dear Am. Nov. 1. I was sick much of the time. Our crowd tho' all were perfect strangers to me were all so congenial. We reached England in 7 days. Landed at Liverpool. Was very glad to get on solid footing again. Miss Kale stopt at Liverpool to see Mr. Evans people & I staid with her. The rest went to London. It seemed so cold after landing. My throat was a little sore at Liverpool and at London our rooms were so cold that it got worse & when we went to a Dr. he said it was diphtheria & soon the ambulance was waiting for me. I went to the N.W. Hospital where I staid for 4 full weeks.

Miss Rosenstock was so kind as to wait for me and the other people we knew, Miss Parker-Brown & Mr & Mrs. Brodie were so kind. Miss P.-B. called at the hospital sent me flowers & fruit & in many ways made my stay so pleasant.

When I left the Hospital Mr & Mrs Brodie so kindly had me come to their home from Fri. to Mon. when we left for our boat “Burgermeister” which sailed Dec. 13.

Miss Flanders is the only other 2nd class lady and she was on the train that we got onto in London. We spent Xmas at Naples. What a strange Xmas it was. Had a very smooth passage so far. Several passengers got on at Marseilles among others Mr & Mrs Wallace & daughter. Very nice people go to Uganda.

January

1, Mon.

What a strange New Years day. Every one seems dull and gloomy. The celebrating last night was awful. Doctor & stewards were all so drunk they could scarcely stand straight. Some of the passengers too – Had nuts & fruit late last night but when drink was brot Miss R & I excused ourselves & retired. I'm so thankful I was born & brot up in a Xian land & family. My one resolve for this year is to keep sweet & patient & be able at the close of each day to say I'm closer to Him than ever before. God helping me. Retired 11.

2, Tues.

Sewed at cushion. Wrote to Lora. Almost wish I was with the one I was with a year ago. Alice. but then I wouldn't be here so I'm satisfied. Read Ada's letter today. Shower this P.M. Quite warm. Very calm sea today. Wish I always felt so good. Retired 11.

3, Wed.

Roughest sea we've had. Mrs. Wallace, Dorothy and I had lunch on deck – but ate dinner down stairs alright. Think if we wouldn't get all the kitchen smells we'd get on better. Finished Cora's & Lora's letters both overweight. Had Marie's today. Passing St. Babelmandeb tonight. Mailed Aden P cards too. Retired 10:30.

4, Thur.

Got to Aden at 9 A.M. Left 2 P.M. Wore our helmets for the first time. Got letters from the boys. Seemed very nice. Am glad we are getting so near. 2nd Officer says we'll get to Mombasa on Mon. No one will be to meet us that early but we'll not worry. Read Hulda's letter. Took on coal & O we're dirty as pigs. Retired 10.

5, Fri.

Cool. Have had a very bad headache all day. Almost makes me sick. Had Bec's letter containing our pictures taken just before we left. Worked at cushion. Passed Cape Gardifui tonight. Most too dark to see much but big cliffs. Retired 9.

7, Sun.

Last Sun. on board and the quietest & most blessed of any. 118° in the sun but nice breeze so didn't mind the heat. Read Elfreda's & Blanche's letters today. Mama's only left. Beautiful moon light. Wonder what all we'll do next sun. Retired 11:30.

8, Mon.

Beautiful day. Terrible accident tonight. Had had boat drill & as the boats were being put back a sailor fell overboard. 4th Officer jumped over board to save him but we went too fast & they got separated. Both were rescued after some time. Sailor broke his leg in two places. Has large family so passengers took up collection for him & for 4th Officer. Last full day out & I'm not sorry. Wonder who'll meet us. Had things packed for some time. Retired 11:30.

9, Tues.

Landed about 10 A.M. Mr. Bailey of C. M. S. met us at the boat & took us thro' customs then to his home where we are entertained. They are splendid people. We will leave tomorrow for up country. All the women from M's Kraal came over this morning to persuade him to return & when he wouldn't they not only cursed him but all the boys here. Some of the boys are quite frightened. Massagondi has been causing the rumpus. He buried a stone for each J & M. in M's hut at the Kraal & now they are supposed to die in a few days. M's mother was inconsolable but they talked with her alone and she was better satisfied. She sat under a tree and refused to go home but wanted to stay near should M. die. Poor woman. 22, Sat. Al's 24 birthday.

This eve about 7 while J & I were quietly reading we suddenly heard a crackling & crashing down in the swamp like an enormous fire or whirlwind of some sort. J. went to the door and after listening awhile decided it was elephants getting into the garden. He didn't fire off the gun at once thinking he might call some of the eskaris but finally did. We heard them leave and then M. & Nthombi went down. Said they have done lots of damage in potatoes but pulled up only one hill of corn. Are anxious to see where they came from and what they did. Could see black objects but not distinguish anything. Not enough moonlight. Retired 9.

23, Sun.

First thing this morn. went to garden and found this end quite badly torn up. 7 roses torn out by roots & lots of things steped on & broken. Most of the beets pulled & eaten. 3 large ones at the end left for seed were badly tumbled up. Put two back in just to see what they will do. Half of potato patch all rooted up. Came thro' eucalyptus & broke some. Wonder they did no more damage. The spring isn't working right will have to do it over. J & M went to Kraals this A.M. m't'g with boys at 2. 25, Tues. Merry Xmas.

Well this morning we tho't we'd not have much extra but before we finished breakfast a nice bunch of bananas came and just after M. bro't a little lamb for us to roast. How surprised we were and glad too because of the motive. While getting that ready the Indian came with three big plates. One had two large pineapples another 6 mangoes & the other a fancy cake surrounded with fig, raisins almonds & another dried fruit. Lots of Xmas cards too. So had a regular Xmas after all. I had bad spell of 'M. headache' all day. Boys here tonight for a big feed of rice, roast, bananas & peanuts. Nthombi stored lots away. Retired 9:30.

26, Wed.

Had school today. The boys don't like to have long vacation. Wonder how many people at home are sick today. Mulungit is not well this P.M. & for some reason or other I have awful headache. J worked at dipping water most all day and worked in garden yesterday too. The more steady they work, the less must be done twice.

We planned what we'd do another year – have program and a regular Xmas. The boys enjoyed themselves very much last night. N. doesn't seem any the worse off even tho he did eat an awful amount. Too sick to do anything. Retired 7.

M. feels alright today. My headache is gone but eyes & head feel heavy & sore. Started a letter to Lora. Mulungit came up for work. J. worked at water & cut grass. The work there is going fine. School work went well. M. told us tonight of N's plans which are to earn enough money for a cow or two then go & live with a man who he claims is his father but isn't really. Just wants N. for herdsman. We may not teach him longer if that's true. Take a few min. each morning for Masai reading to M. Retired 9.

29, Sat.

A week ago tonight we had our callers. Washed my hair today. J. cut at grass this A.M. & watched & helped men work at bank. A fine morning, nice day and a beautiful evening. Full moon I think. Straightened & cleaned up in general. Fixed seeds & dried apples. Worked at school work etc. M. up for work.

Things in the garden are growing so fast. The day lily & clematis after their hard fight are growing fine. How fast these weeks pass. Soon another year will be in the past. Worked at school work. Retired 9:15.

30, Sun.

Had a quiet nice day. Got up early and had a walk before breakfast. Beautiful morn. fine all day. Took book & went along swamp to our old ant heap & tree & read. This P.M. lay on the bed & read. At 2 had m't'g with boys then a walk and as we were coming back met our Am. friend who came up & had lunch with us. We walked part way back to station with him.

31, Mon.

The last day of this year. Work went on as usual. Nthombi washed. Was sick this P.M. so didn't come to school. J. worked at cutting grass all day and tho' his hands are sore he declares he's not tired. Watered a little in garden. Weather looks threatening. Started Mrs. Owens letter. M. didn't come up so J. was ready for bed early. Our Am. friend did not call today as we expected. Seems so cold & damp – we don't care for rain until garden is in better shape. Retired 7:45.

Memorandum

The year is finished – in the whole it has been the happiest year of my life. Tho' every change took me farther away from dear ones at home and many goodbyes were said since here & yet I have actually entered the work to which I have been looking forward for so long.

I have taken one of the most important steps of my life. It was taken in Christ's name & with His sanction and blessing. What could make me happier than to know that we are in His will and doing His bidding. We are very happy tho only in a two room house but we are satisfied in one another and in Him.

If people at home or if I myself had known all the comforts one can have here I & they would have worried less and bothered less about many things. God leads the way. We need not fear.

Altho I've kept a diary so long I intend now to change to a Journal. There are things that will want recording and yet from henceforth there wont so many changes come in.

What has been done or left undone cannot be changed. All is recorded in Heaven. May the coming year show much improvement.

“The world is wide

In time & tide

So do not hurry

and God is guide

Whatere betide

So do not worry.”

What this little book contains of joys & sorrows, struggles & smooth sailing, may never be seen by other eyes. Yet it has been a comfort to record them. God has kept a better record for which we praise Him and are happy to leave ourselves in His hands for the next 365 days knowing all will be well at the close of that time if left to Him.

May many blessings attend the paths of those who are so interested in us here and especially Mrs. Brodie whose gift this book was. May God be pleased to send blessing without measure to all His children during this entire year. “Our God is able.”
